Do we know if it will predownload and unlock at midnight for PS4? Reading the reviews has me hyped af and it looks like this game has everything I wanted in a Sonic game and I mean EVERYTHING.

Oh yeah, didn't Aaron tweeted that there will be a launch trailer today? Do we know when that goes up?

Turns out you're right, Launch Trailer is now up. Note that it features gameplay from some of the zones that were revealed in the opening sequence video uploaded earlier, so if you're trying to avoid that content, steer clear.

gon' be a rough two weeks ;_;

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Can I hyperbole for a moment?

I play a LOT of games on a regular basis and cover tons of them. I enjoy a lot of them but there's always this sense that I'm missing something. I just don't feel that passion most of the time these days.

The experience of playing through Sonic Mania, though, hit me like a freight train. It's a mix of nostalgia and genuine high quality platforming at work but the whole package is exceptional.

I put games like Sonic 2 up there at the top of my all time favorites list, of course, so it's no surprise that I'm enjoying it but...I feel like Sonic Mania is going to be a game that stands alongside my favorites of all time. The design is just too good. This is the kind of game you can replay over and over for years. I know these games well enough that it's already clear to me from just one day of playing. It's that good.

There's no question that this will be my favorite game of the year. Knowing Sonic well enough, this isn't just an early 'buzz' feeling early - this is great stuff.

You're describing Sonic Mania like I described Bloodborne half-way through. You have me sweating, man.

Yakuza Kiwami, Everybody's Golf, XCOM 2 expansion and Windjammers all within 2 days along with Mario + Rabbids.

Oh shit, Windjammers yeah that'll be fun. Is Everybody's Golf coming from the Hot Shots line?

I feel the same about playing some games today, and I'm really happy now that I've read your full post. When the music started during the short demo I played at PAX East, it was immediately apparent that this game could actually do it.

I'm really excited for this. A 2D Sonic the Hedgehog in 2017.

I really, really wish the PC version wasn't two weeks away. Have had it pre-ordered for months.

But still, excited.

What am I missing? I changed my region, but it's still showing up as releasing soon.

Are you changing to an account registered in another country or are you just changing the system's region setting?

Full disclosure - I downloaded it from the Australian eShop because I live here.

I can see it as released, but it won't accept my CC, keeps asking me to verify my info. Any one know why?

Some credit cards from different regions do not work on some digital storefronts. If you really want to get it from the Australian eShop you are going to have to get an AUS eShop pre-paid card.

Anyone know somewhere reliable other than Offgamers for AU eshop cards? Would like to do this but they've sold out of the $30 cards :(

It's awesome. Spoiler-heavy impressions below!

The second act of each reused level is essentially brand new. So far Chemical Plant's second act has been the standout for me; it's very clever at mixing up the original level in a way that you wouldn't expect. That said Studiopolis is very impressive - and much more enjoyable than the usual casino level where there is too much crap thrown at you to stop you moving.

There have been bosses throughout so far and they have been super creative. Again, the standout was from Chemical Plant: a boss based on the bean machine game. It genuinely blew me away. So cool.

The game in general feels super smooth (I was literally playing Sonic 3 this morning) and miles ahead of anything that has come before. The music in every aspect is QUA-LI-TY.

Oh, and the special/bonus stages are great. I couldn't believe how smooth the blue sphere bonus stage felt! Honestly kinda mind-blowing haha. T|he UFO stage controls really well too, which was the only thing I was worried about really coming into this.

I'd like to help but it is 2:30am and everywhere that sells eShop cards is closed right now.

Many seem to be recommending https://www.offgamers.com/game-card/consoles/nintendo-eshop-card-au as a place to buy an Australian eShop code. Otherwise you could try eBay for a reseller. I'll have a quick poke around and see if I can find any other places doing Australian eShop codes without being a horrendous rip-off in mark ups.

So I just created a new Nintendo account and set the region to Australia. That doesn't take long. Here's how to do it step-by-step.

This site also names a few sites where you can buy the digital cards - including off gamers. If this doesn't help I've used eBay in the past for XBL in the 360 days; don't see why it would be any different now.

So, are credit cards from America not supposed to work on the AUS eshop?

EDIT: nvm, I'm way behind on this one. Offgamers seems to be sold out of eshop codes for AUS.

I have never digitally pre-ordered and pre-loaded a game ever before until now. For a fucking Sonic game of ALL games.

Not a Witcher, Halo, Elder Scrolls, GTA, Fallout, Forza, or any other game series I buy on release day regardless of price or reviews.

Hyped out of my god damned mind for a Sonic game makes it feel like Christmas '94 knowing I was getting Sonic & Knuckles and waiting endlessly to open it.

I fucking hope this game sells millions and Sega gets a wake-up slap to the face.

I am playing the Australian version. I finished three levels so far, but if it keeps up it might be my favourite 2D platformer of all time. A lot of people here are going to be very pleased.

thanks for your help

I had a look around and the only other place I can find AUS eShop cards is just one local seller on eBay and they have a 60%+ mark up put on the original amounts. Plus being that it is now 2:45am you probably would not receive the code for at least a few hours.

Looks like Off Gamers is your best bet. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Edit - it looks like Off Gamers is now sold out.

Seems like my Mania will be better than Sonic 3+ Knuckles statement might not be crazy afterall.

Honestly, Bloodborne was one of the last games that gave me that feeling as well.

It's probably because most games released now are not games. It's been bugging me a lot recently but then I noticed the top ten switch games in a store next to the Xbox and PS4 stuff. All nintendos games were bright, fun, imaginative and games that looked like you could turn on and be playing within seconds achieving and having fun. Whilst the other two consoles featured dark gritty realism that you just know have 30 minute tutorials and how to use the controls before you can even begin doing anything.

Nintendo games are still in the classic mold of games being games compared to a lot of stuff and obviously sonic fits into this a lot. I've played a few of the latest releases the past year and had fun with them from resident evil 7 to watchdogs but they don't have that feeling of old games being games that are simple to pick up and just enjoy for what they are. If anything Indie games are picking up this slack too with instant fun playability.

I agree with part of this, but

I don't think that's fair to say that simply because there's a 30 minute tutorial. Dark Souls and Bloodborne are absolutely "games" and have a much higher learning curve. Horizon Zero Dawn is applauded for how fun it is, and that game has a tutorial that takes a bit to ramp up. Even Nintendo's games can be guilty of this - Splatoon 2 has essentially a four hour tutorial since it is widely recommended that you play through the single player before going online, which is where the real meat of the game is. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will for SURE have a lengthy tutorial.

There are plenty of games that are old that also had these long tutorials - we just block them out because nostalgia has burned into our brains how to play them. Whether or not a game has a lengthy tutorial doesn't discount it from being a game.

that puzzling face
That's a very narrow view of 'games' to be honest. I guess Final Fantasy VII doesn't count as a game?

Any known differences between versions? I have every system this is available for, but would like to get it for the Switch for portability (and because I haven't bought anything for it since MK8) unless it runs at like half the resolution or frame rate.

Yeah i agree with his post and with your part added in it's complete.

There are still very good games coming out sure the AAA yearly and mainstream games might overshadow em alot but there is still very good games wich are truly good.

Altho i prefer the Splatoon Story above multiplayer :p but i like both luckily and did not think of it as a tutorail.

Do we have any idea about when Sonic Mania will be available on Switch? Will it be tonight at midnight? Or are we going to have to wait until some random time tomorrow?

(Not sure where things have landed on Switch Store updates.)

Thanks!

It launched at midnight in Australia, the rest of the world might follow suit.

Now we wait, and see.

Fun is relative, what is fun for you may not be for others.

Also, Bloodborne or Souls are as gritty as they can get and they considered classic styled games, with barely no tutorial, scenes, etc....

But c'mon.
