SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 or AGAINST |OT| of Huelen in Green-Eyed Heaven

Kats review does not read like a B to me, that sounds like a D.

She manages to complain about every single aspect of the game being flawed aside from it's look. Bad levels, bad music, bad bosses. Last time I checked when all the aspects that make a game good are poor the game is poor too.

I'm really leaning towards not even giving this pile of crap a chance at this point. Seems like the bandwidth I'd use to download the trial version would be better spent doing basically anything else.

This looks so mediocre. That video a few pages back with Casino Street was just horrendous. What kind of Sonic game hands out free lives like they're going out of style?

And hot damn the music is awful. Some of it is bearable, but by god could they vary the synths a little? Everything sounds the same! And by god the Super Sonic music is like a tddler banging on his fisher price toy piano for the first time. This is a Sonic game! It's supposed to have awesome music!

The level itself seemed to play alright but it still looks clumsy and unrefined. At least the visuals look clean.

Fuck you SEGA.

Game has been beaten!! (Except for special stages.)

If homing attack is wrong, I don't wanna be right.:lol

Loved the level designs overall. Had a very classic feel to them. In some ways, like Lost Labyrinth and Mad Gear, they were an improvement over their inspirations. They were a bit less frustrating and didn't slow you down as much. Those Starfish I dreaded were at least avoidable this time.

My least favorite zone would be Casino Street. While the pinball physics were spot-on, Act 1 was TOO much like the original and Act 3's cannons where just ho-hum. Act 2 is a very fun ride but over generous in extra lives.

Fuck you SEGA.

  • Buy Xbox 360 Version
  • Download All Good Sonic OSTs
  • Use Custom Soundtrack Feature
  • Enjoy slightly more than you might've previously

Alternatively:

  • Don't buy game

So more impressions: I know you don't care lol

So I beat the game, needed to go back get all the emeralds. The last 2 are a little tough. Surprise ending was kinda neat. After playing it over and over I like it more.

Its just different and once you get used to it its real fun. SS is fast as hell too. Some Zones its better to not use him because how fast he is. If the improve next episode then I will keep on the wagon.

I take it the FPS counter didn't give it away then?

Proof that it's uncool to defend a game that is a severe disappointment for a sequel to a genuinely brilliant platforming trilogy.

I take it back. I hate this game. I'm just having an awful time with this game. Just too many stupid little issues that are irking me. Especially the uncurling since it keeps getting me hit when I spindash up a ramp to try to hit an enemy and Casino Street.

Partially the reason might be because I haven't tried out a classic Sonic game for a while and side-scrolling platformers aren't my strongest genre but this game just feels too sluggish and out of whack. And I'm stuck at Labryinth Zone Act 2... need to take a break from this game.

For people complaining about Genesis Sonics not giving out an abundance of lives, you may want to replay them. I always had a ridiculous amount of lives by the second or third zone. I don't even want to talk about the amount I'd have by endgame.

ok, i'm gonna call bullshit. i definitely would have a decent amount of lives by the end of the game, but i have never in my life seen the life counter above 100. not even close.

I didn't watch the video, does it actually hit 100? If it even hits 50 ignore everything I just said. I was thinking it was in the 30's.

The segaonline NL video, the dude has 160+ lives! In the beta the counter stops at 99 but they made it 3 didgets big now...

Playing Sonic 1 and 2 on VC for the first time I have to struggle to maintain lives. Maybe I'm just not good at Sonic...

It's not hard. I had 11 without even trying and around 20+ by Casino Street Act 2. Down to 6 lives in LZ Act 2. I fucking hate this zone. I don't like puzzles and I don't like puzzles in my Sonic games with the clock riding me. This is Carnival Night Zone all over again for me... :lol

Yeah it has the fps counter. He's probably using the dolphin emulator that somehow GAF has a thread about that.

Well, I may have spoke prematurely. I didn't mention I've played all of those Sonics so much that I can collect ridiculous amounts of 1ups. I didn't think about that before I posted.

Wow 1up Kat's review echoed my complaints about the annoying moving wall in Mad Gear Zone back in the old Sonic 4 thread.

I remember writing that section of the game seems to blatantly showcase how bad the physics are in this game. This is how broken the game is, and she agrees.

Bad physics. Check.

Awkward platforming. Check.

Bad level design. Check.

Questionable design decisions that lead to smh. Check.

"Keep moving" or hold right to win. Check.

Yep, it's a D grade game. Sonic is not back folks.

Okay, wow, wonky ass physics. I was on a gradual downward slope, so I rolled into a ball to build up speed like I'm used to in ...well...any other Sonic game. And I just craaaawl down that incline. It felt so off.

EDIT: I kid you not, it feels like they slowed his regular running speed. Maybe to make speed boosts matter.

As someone said on sonic retro, running down slopes and rolling down slopes are reversed in terms of what they should be doing.

Okay, its definitely not Sonic Advance 4 or Sonic Rush 3. It has a feel all its own, different from any other game in the franchise. I'm not sure if its good or not, it doesn't seem outright bad...its just weird.

They've definitely heavily nerfed the spin dash though, to the point of being almost useless. And that makes me sad.

That's not true. There's platforming to do (and one light puzzle-esque part) and you will get yourself killed flying into a bottomless pit by playing recklessly and just speed to the right.

Personally I felt like the game constantly felt like "Its kind of like X series except not as good" where X is either Rush, Advance, or the Classics depending on the segment.

I can't believe how bad this game is. This is Blade Kitten bad. I kinda feel bad for my buddy who spent money on this. Can't say that I didn't warn him.

I played through 2-3 and had to quit because I nearly fell asleep while playing. Sonic 4 is boring as hell. I could go on about what I hate, but really it would be overkill. You know about the shitty music, physics and level design. Floating off vines, walking up walls, and basically holding right through entire levels.

If you own a ps3/360 and were thinking of buying this on Wii, just wait to download the demo. Buy a better game with that money. Lara Croft, Super Meat Boy... anything really.

I'll try to play more later on this week, but I don't really feel like it.

I'm starting to wonder about those reviews. 8s and 9s? Really? NSMBW must be a 30 then.

So yeah, pretty much every observation on how Sonic controls I made based on the videos to this point were 100% spot-on. Sonic is just an absolute chore to control in any meaningful fashion. He's incredibly slow, turning him around is so unbelievably tight and stilted, and it gets even worse in the air, what with the lack of air momentum and all.

The sad part about all this is that the game actually has some pretty awesome level design at points, especially past the first level. If anything, the dudes making this game seem to have a general idea on how to do non-Rush non-Advance level design. What makes this sad is that all the levels are so obviously designed with Sonic's control in mind, which means that it can't really allow for any sort of challenging and interesting platforming set pieces because any attempts to do so would just frustrate the player completely.

And seriously, why why why why why is rolling completely useless in this game? Why does rolling slow you down on slopes? I run up to a loop in Splash Hill, instinctively press down as I'm running up the slope to start rolling, and Sonic just slows to a dead stop before falling backwards away from the loop. Seriously, what the hell is this? Classic Sonic gameplay just doesn't exist if you take such an integral part of the game and make it completely superfluous.

On the plus side, the game really does look quite nice, if a little rough at points. The homing attack works as it should, although the fact that Sonic controls so terribly means that you basically have to use it as a crutch to do... well, do pretty much damn near anything. It's interesting because when playing Megamix, I can pick and choose the spots to use the homing attack and let my momentum carry me the rest of the way. In this game, if you're not using the homing attack, you're simply not playing the game properly. This is not a good thing.

So all in all, pretty much what I was expecting. On the bright side, I look forward to the inevitable hacks of this game that actually turn it into something playable, so I'll hold on to that hope for the time being.

Yeah, that's how I feel at this point. The level design is pretty good in the Casino zone, its just the damn physics. Someone has to hack this thing and fix it.

EDIT: Except for bottomless pits. Those need to die in hellfire.

Almost all Sonic games have bottomless pits though. Heck, even Emerald Hill Zone does. And Splash Hill Act 3. I'm a pit magnet. :lol

The more I play, the more I hate it. I couldn't spin dash and roll up a certain section in Casino Street but when I ran, he went straight up to the top. I couldn't spin dash up a slope to hit an enemy because Sonic uncurled and got hit.

I got hit when I home attacked an enemy and couldn't bounce off the next one because he gets out of a ball. The bumper in Casino Street's boss kept sending me straight into Eggman's electric claws (that might be intentional?).

The end of Labryinth Zone Act 2 was just dumb.
How is the level suppose to be keep on repeating itself if your dropping constantly down? It's not a circle, not a loop, but straight down.

Huh? Don't the original Labyrinth Zone, Metropolis Zone and Ice Cap Zone all do that?
