GI really couldn't have said it better, that's a great review.
I say otherwise. My friends and I don't agree game informer and their reviews. Finally one of them listened and stopped subscribing.

Either way, even if the game has positive reviews, I still stand by my remarks.

Yup, old.

Personally I'm still waiting for edge/gamestm/gamecentral to review it.

Strange that gametrailers hasnt reviewed it yet. Always like watching those, since you usually have decent quality video to go along with the different sections.

Doesn't seem like many people got advance code for this.

wow.

After reading the IGN, Gamesradar and GI reviews I feel like I'm missing something. They seem to boil down to "It's 2D and called Sonic 4...
Sonic's back bitches!"

Nothing in the GR review in particular makes me think "this is going to get 9/10". I don't really think the game would be getting much praise if it weren't called Sonic. Although I suppose the more vocal critics wouldn't be so hyperbolic if it wasn't called Sonic either.

Well they seem to like the music, graphics style, and gameplay...what else would warrant a reviewer giving something a high grade?

Not that I always agree with GI or IGN...but still.

Wow.. He offers his criticism without overreacting (like many of the posters in here), and he says his opinions without sounding like a Sonic-fanboy. Yet people like you come in here and insult him.

Grow up.

You could be a bit more reasonable in saying that the graphics are below average and that the music is poor.

The gameplay is uninteresting and the controls feel sluggish.

The level design is for lack of a better word "boring". The gadgets are unimaginative as are the look of the levels.

Didn't seem like that to me. Stop being an ass.

I know we're going off course here, but I too read something rather sinister and slightly menacing in the way RobbieNick promised "out of respect" not to reveal the details of ZeroGravity's non-GAF identity, and then took the time to hint at the private details he had.

It was totally, completely unnessecary. All this, because he dared to express an opinion about Sonic 4 that was not positive.

I also found that to be a tad bit weird, and he apparently isn't even who you're referring to, so... awkward.

That.

Sonic 4 is composed entirely by Jun Senoue (a handful of Sonic 3 tracks, 3D Blast Genesis, sound director on SA1 through Shadow, sound director for SatBK), whereas Unleashed had Tomoya Ohtani (Chu Chu Rocket, SA2 rap BGM, Hang Castle in Heroes, Billy Hatcher, composer for Advance 3 and Rush Adventure, sound director for '06, Unleashed, and Colors) as the sound director, primarily backed up by Fumie Kumatani and Kenichi Tokoi. Senoue burned out ages ago while Ohtani just keeps getting better. Kumatani and Tokoi have been around since the Saturn days and been consistently excellent.

Senoue's basically the musical equivalent of Iizuka.
I know I'm late as hell but I just gotta say, these three are fucking godly

Does seem like something Arnold Schwarzenegger would say in a movie. " I know who you are and I know who you work for". :lol

Really its not that big of a deal. He's just saying he knows what kind of Sonic fan the guy was. Then again...that might not have been the same poster in the end.

It's called respecting peoples privacy. Maybe I could have stated it better, but I'm not trying to be sinister in anyway. If I came off too harsh, I apologize.

Well aint' you just a handful of sunshine? Jesus. All I'm saying is give a game a shot before giving your opinion. It's like the people who pre-judges Rocket Knight or Mega Man Universe just because it was 2.5-D with modern graphics.

Old? Gamesradar review:

http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/sonic...a-20101008112650143032/g-20090909115153197035

You'll love

* The purest Sonic game for ten years
* Works on so many gameplay levels, like its predecessors
* So much game to master, despite its diminutive size

You'll hate

* Can be 'completed' in one evening
* Physics are different, not necessarily worse
* Visuals could have been even better

Overall: 9

Finished up the first stage on the Wii, gonna try the rest later, but the physics do feel a little floaty. It's not so bad that you literally walk up slopes with no momentum, but it doesn't exactly take full speed running to get up there either.

And it's weird too because Sonic feels a little sluggish at take off, but still has enough speed go up the larger ramps. Gameplay feels solid though. No where near as bad as people are making it out to be. Have a feeling it's gonna be a good game.

Honestly though... fuck all these speed ramps. I hate being pushed forward.

LOL Yea. I based it off an older Sonic X issue. It was one of Eggman's disguises where he was dressed up like the dad from "American Choppers". Unlike the cartoon, Sonic X was a fun, comical read where Eggmans plans came off more like "Pinky and the Brain".

On to Sonic 4. Jun Sunoe did make some improvements to the soundtrack, but it is still pretty forgettable. I like the music in Mad Gear and Lost Labyrinth, but not much else.

The world map opens up to you after the first stage again. I don't care for that, but you can always press the "A" button and move on to the next stage.

The game's very fun and the level design reminds me of the classics. However, as a solo episode, it's a bit on the short side. I'd probably give it an 8 or 8.5. Worth $15 if you're a Sonic fan, but if you're looking just for a new 2-D platformer, it's only worth about $10.

I get too upset on this thread sometimes. I realize I can be overly defensive and do come off as a douche at times. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Are there a decent amount of alternate paths in Splash Hill act 1?

Each Act has a top, middle and bottom path just like in the classics. The top will get you to the goal the fastest while the bottom will take you the longest.

Agreed. They need to tone that shit down in Episode 2.

I updated my ps3 for this. What time do games usually go up on Japanese pan? It's 7:20 on release day now. Japanese people don't to get to download this stuff before work/school?

I too have been playing the Wii version.

I feel like the game is just a tad too easy, I had 22 lives when I turned it off, but it isn't a bad game so far. I just finished Lost Labyrinth before having to go to work, and that play session (from the beginning) clocked in at about maybe an hour and a half of play. The most challenging thing thus far was the boss fight in LL.

I'm still not a fan of the homing attack being forced in areas, but it's there so it has to be accepted. I don't like how many of the levels seem to end with some variation of a bottomless pit, but with the amount of lives you'll accrue death is meaningless in this game.

It's a solid start if they're looking to recapture Sonic's classic feeling (and it can be argued they're not), but they still have a lot of work to do to the physics and level design.

Based on what I've played so far it's about a B on my scale, but we'll see how I feel after I finish it.

Hmmmmm.....

After Sonic clears all acts, Eggman and him go all the way back to Splash Hill. Beat-Up Eggman gets upset and flies off to his space port. Sonic follows on a Red-Rocket with a two-tailed emblem on it.

Shades of another character for Eps 2?

BTW, most of the game just gives you the standard amount of 1UPs, but the new Carnival Zone Act 2 goes overboard thanks to the bingo cards. The cards either give you extra lives or more rings which lead to extra lives!! Went in there with 5 lives, came out with 25.

It seems to me, and this is aimed almost squarely at Hilary Goldstein's IGN review, that the disdain for Nintendo has gotten so large now people are even wanting Sega back to kick their ass. "Watch out Mario, Sonic's back!" :lol That just seems so absurd to me.

They do seem to be overreacting a little. Like you said, it's 2D and they call it Sonic 4... there doesn't seem to be much analysis beyond that.

This game is awful. I'm too seething with rage at how bad and utterly frustrating it is to even put it into words.

The Sonic franchise can never be revived. Sure it might sell, but it'll never be good. There just seems to be some cogs missing in Sega Japan somewhere. They can revitalize every new Mario platforming title, and everyone of them is ace. And sometimes they even bring new innovation with them. But every new Sonic game... it's just the same boring, broken, lazy gameplay. It sucks because I want it to be good, but it never is.

It is illegal to Tag Fish in Tag Fishing Sanctuaries by law 38.36 of the GAF Wildlife Act
By the way, the originals 1,2,3 are available on PSN?

Semi related, I see the admins at Sonic Retro deleted my news reply that said the super sonic tune was shitty :lol guess they must be trying to go pro-sega instead of allowing the truth.

...Anyway once it's wednesday I will rape the shit out of the trial, i'm going to spindash up hills and roll down slopes and stand half way around loops, i'm NOT going to homing attack on my first run of the demo too, gotta go in old school baby.

Hmmmm... Usually they're is a lot of in fighting on those forums, but they don't normally censor stuff like that. I agree though. That tune was shitty.

Enjoy the low route

I will :lol

Has this wii version gameplay been posted yet? lol at 54 seconds but at least he fell back down.

I've realised why the spindash sounds so ear hurting bad, it's because the spin sample is not becoming higher pitched with each rev like the older game so it's just a spam of the same sample and pitch over each other, messy.

So, the 1up review then.

The awkward platforming that characterized some of the older games is thankfully absent

the attack's homing ability makes it feel much less awkward, and thus faster and more interesting.

Any excuse to run as fast as possible is great, but I was frustrated by the abundance of obstacles

as with every Sonic game, the action becomes clumsy and irritating once Dr. Robotnik arrives

Yeah.

Damn!! Eggman's final boss form is tough. Plus, you only get 3 rings to save you. This is one area where homing attack actually doesn't help you cuz you get knocked way back. If you do a standard jump attack, you have more control.

I was hoping that they'd have elements like this for every boss, since the others (well the first one in-particular) seems like a sleepwalk with the homing attack.

The reviewer sounds like someone that was never very good at Sonic games in the first place, the same type that complained about 'bouncing off of enemies' back in the 1990's.

This looks so mediocre. That video a few pages back with Casino Street was just horrendous. What kind of Sonic game hands out free lives like they're going out of style?

And hot damn the music is awful. Some of it is bearable, but by god could they vary the synths a little? Everything sounds the same! And by god the Super Sonic music is like a tddler banging on his fisher price toy piano for the first time. This is a Sonic game! It's supposed to have awesome music!

The level itself seemed to play alright but it still looks clumsy and unrefined. At least the visuals look clean.

Fuck you SEGA.
