I didn't have to figure out any rules to pick up and play the first Sonic when I was 4. The way he ran and jumped made perfect sense.

It makes sense to me. You press a button and Sonic jumps, big f'n whoop. Just play the damn game, it's not a matter of life or death, just a game. Some of you overanalyze the game, just play it and have fun.

This game is very easy to pick up and play. It's the physics that are in question. Things like inertia when rolling into a ball or easily walking up a hill that are concerns.

Whats funny is that Sonic Colors actually turned out to be extremely fun and well made by all accounts, while Sonic 4 ep1 kinda fell off track. I had moderate fun with the PSN version of the game...but just the way Sonic controls/how sluggish he feels makes me not want to play after playing Sonic Colors.

I agree with this. I had no problems picking it up, granted doing his wonky jump the first time made me go "Woah what". The major control problems arise after the initial moments of getting Sonic to move.

Ceiling-running... I'd laugh, but I'm too busy facepalming.

Sonic games already had ceiling running though, and the classics did it better :lol

Honestly this game isn't perfect or anything but having to play through the 2D portions of Colors, that are completely unlike a Sonic game, made me appreciate Sonic 4 a lot more.

Only tangentially related, but last night Yuji Naka posted photos on Twitter of him grabbing a beer with Takashi Iizuka and Naoto Oshima.

I don't read Japanese and Babelfish mangles a lot of the text but it sounds like Naoto Oshima was at PROPE for some reason. They went out drinking later that night and Iizuka joined them.
He probably finished up an interview in the other room.

Man thats the first time Ive seen Iizuka actually smile :lol
Also that drawing of Sonic is super appealing, Oshimas still got it.

...NO WAIT

THAT WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO GET IIZUKA ON THE SAME PAGE! AND THEY WERE ALL DRUNK!

lttp: finally downloaded it.

I couldn't dl it until I got home because my appt. in Austin is stupid and their complex's router blocks the Wii. Anyways I can't believe how bad Sonic Team f'd up on this game. I honestly don't mind the homing. That's not what disappoints me. It's the dang mechanics. What happened to momentum in a sonic platformer? When I am going near full speed with sonic and jump in the air, then let go of the right button on the d-pad, I shouldn't stop in mid air, I should slowly decrease speed like in previous sonic games. But Noooooo that's way too difficult for sonic team to do. Jeez it was like playing another sonic flash game with really nice graphics. Graphics aren't what make the game though, it's the controls and the mechanics of Sonic. It is just atrocious. Like what the hell was Sonic Team "fixing" when they delayed this game for 6 months?

I can certainly see where the criticisms are coming from, but if you take the time to get used to the new physics, the game's not that bad. It's just annoying having to relearn how Sonic moves with his new momentum and jumping arcs. Personally, I still prefer the original mechanics more (it just felt more natural), but then again, I also played the crap out of those games so it's practically ingrained into muscle memory by now. I felt a lot better about 4 after I gave it a little more time and got past the initial "Ugh! This doesn't feel right at all!" wall.

I thought the level designs were pretty good for the most part, too. I especially dug the new Casino stage, and those flipping card platforms looked cool. I hated that cheap shot with the final boss' kamikaze move though. I was just standing around like a cocky ass thinking that I've won, then boom, down I go.

Since this got bumped, I'll go ahead and point this out:

http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/us/

The site's actually gone backwards. Call it a metaphor for the game or whatever, but everything but Splash Hill's been taken out of the zone menu, some of the sections are locked off again, it's odd. Most likely they restored an old backup for some reason, but it's kind of an odd thing to leave like that.

The site's fixed. Also, new Avatar items came out on the Xbox Marketplace, you can see the pics here:

http://www.tssznews.com/2010/12/15/sonic-4-xbox-avatar-items-released/

Included are wind-up badniks, a set of Chaos Emeralds, a Genesis-styled cartridge (box?) complete with the classic Sega seal, and a Sonic plush. But there's something odd about it:

Besides the (dead) green eyes, that's awfully close to "Classic Sonic." Especially the round body. Iizuka made this big deal about how Sonic's design was permanently changed since Adventure, so it's kind of interesting to see this.

Edit: On second thought, I guess it's not that close. It's just the round torso made me over-think it.

I played the iPhone version today having previously played some of the 360/PS3 version.

Aside from the cool screen rotation effect on iPhone, Sonic seemed to run a hell of a lot faster. I really enjoyed it on iPhone. On consoles I sat there thinking even at top speed he was moving so slow, on iPhone I actually felt like I was going fast.

Does he run faster on iOS or is this some placebo ish?

lol what the hell. I didn't enjoy it on consoles but I really want to play the whole thing a million times on iOS.

What a weird decision.

Bought the game when it was 800 MSP on the 360.

200/200 in three days and what can I say, it's a good game, nowhere near to Sonic Colours Wii good, but a good game.

Two main things to fix:

- Music in some levels was horrible, mainly because of the "lol, Megadrive" effect which doesn't sound like the Megadrive chip at all.
It was enjoyable in other levels

- The "LOL, let's spam homing attacks to gain speed!" method for speed-runs. fuck it. it's the reason why i'm not even trying speed-running the game. i just can't seem to go fast.
Bring back the "Keep right pressed to gain speed and actually use that damn spin dash/ball to go FASTER".

If they fix these in Episode 2, and i doubt it, it's going to be a grrreat Sonic game imho.
Too bad I think it will be Episode 1 all over again with new levels and
Metal Sonic
as a final boss.

Just played this on iPhone...it's even worse than I could've expected. Do you need any skill for it or do you only have to walk to the right and jump sometimes? Thank goodness I just bought NSMB DS too, which is at least fun and provides some training for the ugly difficulty called NSMB Wii.

I am not pleased with Sonic 4's changes/demo but I ended up buying it on PSN because I love Sonic and felt like I was the problem. I am not the problem and the game is pretty mediocre/bad but I found it challenging at times. There were some puzzles and boss fights that required a bit too much/skill/luck imo as well as stages where you had to jump carefully off of bouncey pinball launchers. I didn't find it suffered from "the game plays itself" problem.

Would still only give it a 1.5/5 though.

I played through the iOS version. Despite my already low expectations for this game, I somehow managed to like this even less than I thought I would. That doesn't even take into account the terrible iOS exclusive second acts, ridiculous loop spinning, and some inherent problems with virtual dpads. Wonky physics, bland levels/graphics/music, rehashed bosses (often for the worse), unfun special stages. Bleh.

And I would consider it to be one of the worst games I played in the last few years (though not as bad as Doshin the Giant).

It was not perfect, but I think it's by far not as bad as many want it to be.
The only thing I dislike about the game is the boring photoshop-look of stage 2-4.

i can't believe that some people still judging the game based on the terrible and inferior ver.
I-Phone + Platformer game >>> make no sense

yes it's not the perfect example for SONIC4 .... but it's still a really good game (the HD ver of course)

Most of the Sonic fans seem to have migrated to the Sonic Colours thread after this trainwreck..
I'm a big Sonic-fan but I've played Sonic 4 after I've played Sonic Colours. Sonic 4 is absolutely awful. The controls are horrible, Sonic feels like a tank and never gets fast. He's slower than in the Mega Drive games even and doesn't accelerate fast enough. Too bad, because the level design actually is good. I'd love to play it with good physics / controls. They don't have to be like in the Mega Drive games, they just have to be good.

Whether or not you can finish the game, or land on the platform, doesn't say anything about the physics (good or bad). The physics apply to actual platforming experience. Sonic 4 has Sonic Rush physics, which only lend itself well to Sonic Rush since that game is basically a race-to-the-end type of game. Sonic 4 is the equivalent of putting those physics into a Mario game.
The physics don't feel like Sonic Rush's physics at all. Sonic Rush has really nice physics, even if you are going slow (slow of course doesn't mean Sonic 4 slow, that'd be really pushing it a bit ;)), this game is a huge disservice to Sonic and by far the worst Sonic game of 2010.

How come so many bought this game.

At rated it well (the console versions anyway) from both reviews and all available user reviews. I guess people liked it. 4.51/5 on PSN based off off 2000+ user ratings.

Second Highest selling title on XBL and highest selling title on PSN during the month of release.

I feel like a lot of the levels have a bit too much automation, but there's a decent-good game in there when it's all said and done.

Great game! Very fun, although the last boss is driving me nuts!
Last boss is pretty tough - at least, much moreso than the earlier ones, in my opinion. We can offer tips if you come across any really difficult parts.
