Oh Ice Climber, there's a fun idea lodged in there but those blasted controls are the most slippery slope of all.
This reminds me of the other ambassador games i've got on the 3DS, that Mario & Yoshi game is deserving of some hate for many a child back in the day saw the GB version in the shops thinking that they'd get some neat Mario and Yoshi focused platformer only to get some lame puzzle game, for that dream crushing alone I will scorn it.

I only had a N64 during that generation(my cousin had a Sega Struggle...lol), so there were lots of long months with nothing to rent in-between the occasional Rare/Nintendo releases. I played a LOT of shit.

Including Glover AND Superman 64.

But for every Fighting Force 64 or Fighter's Destiny, there was always a Goemon's Great Adventure or Mischief Makers in there somwhere.

Despite the droughts my N64 never got hit with much in the way of outright turds, well my brother got that F1 Pole Position game for one Christmas (fortunately he asked for Goldeneye as well to counterbalance, I made the right choice of Lylat Wars) but even that game left its legacy, the commentators bemused "what are you doing?" for driving the wrong way is still quoted to this day.

Though I did borrow some of the weaker stuff, that Scooby Doo Adventure game was probably the worst of them.
All of a sudden this talk makes me want to play Chameleon Twist again, it probably sucked something fierce but my memories are unsure. I will say the game that disappointed me the most was Jet Force Gemini, fuck your Tribals!

Now No Mercy, there's a game that's still yet to be truly surpassed in its sub genre of wrasslin', both a testament to its greatness and a shocking reminder of how bad the games are these days.

Yukes will outlive us all, alongside those 2005 animations they keep reusing

As for Jet Force Gemini, I was really enjoying that because holy hell that fuckin' dog has jetpack paws and a gun on his back, and then they were like "oh this is a post-DKC3 Rare game, so we need you to collect ALL THE THINGS", and my inner child died that day. Then they have the balls to make the final Mizar boss hard as R.Kelly in a high school prom, I swear I almost broke my controller trying to beat that game.

I really loved Jet Force Gemini until you had to go on a tribal collect-a-thon.

That said, I still love the game, shitty end game couldn't destroy all the awesome that happened previously.

If you actually beat the game then you have truly bested me in the land of Rare's collectables, we may both share the fabled 101% of a certain other N64 title but I could not measure up to the Tribal demands.
And as great as Lupus was I always felt they ruined him when he turned into some stupid looking tank thing, no more awesome doggy dashing animation, just a cold husk of metal.

Animations from 2005? damn that's generous, i'm sure they're still building upon those dilapidated 1999 foundations.

I'm gonna take that question and split it in two, cause there's games that are bad in design and games that, while not necesarilly mechanically terrible, are downright boring. And I'll do you one better and list 5, though in no particular order. I'll try to limit them to this gen though cause otherwise I give myself too many easy answers like DMC2, MMX7, etc (while trying to avoid obvious stiny piles like Dragon Age 2 and Sonic '06).

Kusoge:

Assassin's Creed 3 -
nExosMs.jpg

This video should tell you everything you need to know about Glitchfest 3, without even having to get into how AC3 systematically took everything good about 2, Brotherhood and Revelations and destroyed it.

Hyperdimension Neptunia -
ymRpatG.jpg

While I've actually heard good things about it's two sequels, the first game in the series is another candidate for worst battle system in a JRPG. There's an endruring subsystem that involves stocks that requires you to never let the main character die in battle, but there's no way to directly heal someone in battle, only by using abilities that have a percentage to heal after X actions in battle. Not to mention that the humor in this one is garbage, preeeety sure there were more than a few not PC inferences here and there, and I'm not talking about stuff like in the above image.

Ninja Gaiden 3 -
mqdefault.jpg

GIANT ROBOT DINOSAUR TRIPPING ON ITSELF

Dante's Inferno -
It billed itself as a grittier God of War, but it ended up being worse at absolutely everything. Broken enemies, clearly untested higher difficulties, horrible pacing and zzzzzzz combat are only some of this game's issues, with ironically the one semi-fun thing being the gitaroo man clone mini-game you played to save people's souls.

But hey the game has visible tits AND giant shlongs, so at least it's equal in it's gender treatment!

Sonic and the Secret Rings -
Wii_sonic_art_wht--article_image.jpg

STICK THAT WIIMOTE UP YOUR BUM, that's probably still a better control scheme than trying to play Secret Rings normally.

Runner-up:
Castlevania: Lords of Backtracking

Now for the sleepers.

ZZZZZZ:

ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West -
This game is certainly pretty. A shame that it pretty much takes everything in game industry learned in the past 10 years and ignores it. Bad escort missions (the whole game is one!), pointless colllectibles, press single button to win combat, sneaking segments in a non-sneaking game, you name a terrible cliche and this game likely has it. You can certainly play through the game without much issues, but it's a complete bore from start to finish.

White Knight Chronicles -
Hey look another Level 5 game, these guys should probably stick to puzzle games cause they aren't very good at combat systems. I'd say WKC's is better than NNK's, but only enough that the game becomes serviceable doesn't do anything remarkable. It's literally a single player MMO after all.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 -
Namco and Tecmo's guide to making a Musou sequel: Take the experimental stuff that made the previous game fun, make every field the same, guy the story mode in favor of a garbage what-if scenario. 2 still had some fun stuff, but 3 is as by the numbers as a Musou title can get. Even Hokuto Musou dared to be different with it's deliberate slower pace.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City -
I paid 60 smackers for this at launch but only managed to have fun while playing with buds, cause otherwise it's as dull as a TPS can get. The final chapter twist is pretty neat, at least.

The Last Story -
zzzzzzzzzzzz why did this get localized again

Runner-ups:
EDF: Insect Armageddon
Rainbow Moon
Mass Effect 3

And finally, the overall winner of both categories combined is this lovely turd:
Last_Rebellion_Boxart.jpg

Combining sheer unexcitement with a battle system that punishes you for being good at the game by making it even more boring, Last Rebellion is the epitome of a game that's really good at boring the shit out of the player. Riveting!

Furthermore, there were less than zero other RPGs on N64, so while your friends at school were grillin' yo ass about PSX's FMVs and Aeris dying changed their life, you had to make due with Quest 64.

But you remember you had Star Fox 64, and life was good

YOU ALL HAVE STAR FOX 64

Honestly I'd rather play Paper Mario than any PS1 JRPG, so hey.

And yeah, Star Fox 64 rocked.

I feel the same way. I don't want to ruin the mostly slightly good memories I have of the game. Iggy's Reckin' Balls was probably shit too but I don't want to find out.

Eff Ni no Kuni. That is one of the last games I'd pick for someone who wants to get into the genre.

At least go with, I dunno... Mario & Luigi or something. Those games are actually good.

Assassin's Creed 3
Hyperdimension Neptunia
Ninja Gaiden 3
Last Rebellion
The last one is a true kusoge. An easy platinum, but it's so fucking awful to play.

Neptunia 1 is one of the rare role-playing games that I stopped playing 1/3 of the way through. We've been through NG3 already.

AC3 is garbage. I was waiting for Beef to beat it before he rendered his verdict because he was legit enjoying the game beforehand. I was complaining to Noi the whole time while playing it. It was awful. I remember saying that it was so boring and so bad that I wanted to fall asleep and/or stop playing it. It's such a shame that that followed up the Ezio games.

I was going to say Chrono Trigger should be anyone and everyone's entry into the genre, but then I remembered that I haven't played it yet. Should probably stream it soon.

It's pretty inoffensive. I had a really good time when I played it last year.

Why were video games so much batter back then?

Because it was a passion more so than a business back then.

I've decided that I'm finally going to throw down the money and get myself a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga at the end of the month. Been putting that off for way too long.

Man, even though I can't get into Chrono Trigger for some reason, that soundtrack is godly. I especially love those haunting world map themes.

Oh, can I just say I really like this thread for holding actual discussions about video games instead of inane bullshit like waifu wars other threads sometimes fall to?

WOW. Sonic Unleashed (PS3) has a terrible framerate. People weren't joking about these night stages either, it's taking me upwards of 20 minutes to beat them. My sister couldn't get past the first night stage so I'm going to have to help her. They're not that hard though, I haven't come close to dying yet. I wouldn't mind these stages so much, but man, 20+ minutes is way too long for even a game with sort of fun mechanics (Sonic Heroes).

Black Knight is much, much better than Secret Rings so far, as expected. Being able to actually control Sonic makes a difference, and that stupid jump charge mechanic is finally gone. Seems like there's been improvements over Secret Rings across the board. Using the sword kind of sucks but the jump spin slash works okay so it's not too bad.

Is there any point to this item identification thing? I've found a couple of equippable items but most of it seems superfluous, like they threw it in to cover for the lack of content. And then there's the whole giving rings to villagers concept... why is this in a Sonic game? Let alone a Sonic game that, moreso than the others, is about blazing through extremely linear stages as fast as possible.

Seriously, I've been playing Sonic games so much recently my sister and I have been hearing the ring sound at work and in our sleep.

The night stages don't get any better, unfortunnately. I'm struggling to stay awake get through them myself.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention my sister actually fell asleep while playing one of them. I looked over and she's running against a wall. Suffice it to say she's not a fan of the night stages either. lol

I read some posts on GameFAQs and apparently it gets soul-crushingly hard at the very end, so that should be fun.

Best introductory RPG I can think of would probably be either Super Mario RPG (great for beginners to cut their teeth on before moving on to the better sequels), Chrono Trigger (kinda goes without saying) or maybe Earthbound (inventory management's a bit of a bitch, but this seems like a straightforward enough game). Maybe a Final Fantasy, maybe not.

Holy shit, I think I actually remember this game. I don't think I ever got past the first level.

EDIT: Is this it?
Yeah, that's it; except, my version had color, like this. Graphically, it wasn't too bad, but that's not really saying much.

This is also reminding me that despite watching a fair amount of Rugrats as a kid, I barely remember much of it at all.

EDIT:

I only had a N64 during that generation(my cousin had a Sega Struggle...lol), so there were lots of long months with nothing to rent in-between the occasional Rare/Nintendo releases. I played a LOT of shit.

Glover's actually pretty decent. Flawed as hell, but it's nowhere near Superman 64.

To be fair, my brother and I used to have small spats when we were younger.

Sorny called me today even though I took it in yesterday. I got my grill back, yo.

Let's all curse Ni no Kuni for killing my PS3. Also for making Noi lose hope in all of video games. Fuck Ni no Kuni.

Hey screw you punk, I enjoyed Ni no Kuni despite any nitpicks or archiac shit you snooty little babies would complain about.

What do you guys think about Fumie Kumatani, do you think she's the GOAT like I do?

I personally find Honoka to be the hottest and sexiest JAV actress, though the only series I watched her in is Akibaranger, and even in there she was friggin' awesome.

Quest 64 is very, very flawed, but if nothing else I found the combat system to be somewhat engaging and the graphics were nice at times.

Battle system was promising, but it never goes anywhere. There are never any additional party members, and all of your moves are locked to the four elements + your stupid staff attack. Considering that more was promised to us when the game was in development, it is painfully obvious that the game was a rushed job. Even after all of these years, I still remember how empty the last portion of the game was.

Furthermore, there were less than zero other RPGs on N64, so while your friends at school were grillin' yo ass about PSX's FMVs and Aeris dying changed their life, you had to make due with Quest 64.

Aside from the part about FFVII, this was very true. .o.

It was thanks to my friend I got exposed to games such as Grandia, which was one of my favorite games at the time.

I wasn't expecting more party members given how the game controlled. And I don't know what's wrong with the spells being based on the four elements. It's a bad game, but I can't help but like it a little for innovating with the new hardware. They brought RPG battles into the third dimension and made them all about positioning and movement in the same 3D environment you're exploring (as opposed to transitioning into a battle screen). Did Square do anything with FFVII's battles that wasn't possible on the SNES, besides visuals?

Huh? Fumie Kumatani is one of the Sonic composers, as noted in the OP of this thread.

Seriously, I've gotta start asking you to scale it back a bit. You've done this more than once in this thread, and people tend to react to it in a negative way because sometimes it is either rude (that time when you inconsiderately made a slanderous implication about tiggerkiddo), or inconsiderate of others' dispositions in this thread (like just now, and other occasions prior to that).

Hey screw you punk, I enjoyed Ni no Kuni despite any nitpicks or archiac shit you snooty little babies would complain about.
Additionally, I never ever once stated that my issues with NNK were because I considered it archaic. I don't think it should be considered archaic at all, considering many other RPGs released in the last generation had followed suit with respect to its base design. Go back and read my, Noi's, and nintendoman's posts again. We are not being, as you put it, "snooty little babies" about it because they are legitimate criticisms of the game. Level-5 did what Level-5 likes to do: mar a rather pretty game with inadequate systems in place that bring the game down considerably.

But hey, what do I know about RPGs and RPG mechanics/number crunching/battle systems at all?

What do you guys think about Fumie Kumatani, do you think she's the GOAT like I do?
She's a great composer.

Seriously, though, I'm in love with most of her stuff on the Unleashed soundtrack. Though to be fair, I'm in love with the Unleashed soundtrack in general. And lots of her PSO stuff is great, but with that said, I think her style is more in-line with the Sonic compositions than they are for PSO sometimes.

Anyone heard this non sound FX recording of Windy Hill from Lost World yet? I quite like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcZKWbhSoUM
I have not. Sounds super-great. Love that bass, but you guys already knew I was going to say that.

Well I would agree with criticisms regarding various elements about the game (like how the 'Talk to animals spells' needs to be cast every time you want to talk to each animal/creature), and yet...I still enjoyed it and it never bothered me.

...but I can see I was being a jerkass in my previous posts...can I post kickass Sonic comic images and make up for it...(it's the only Sonic thing I'm primarly knowledgable about)

I was just messing around back there =/

I understand that you didn't really mean any harm by it or anything, but considering what's happened with a few other Community threads recently (Not going to get specific here), the last thing this thread needs is to be uncomfortable for anyone possibly looking through it. I'd like to think everyone here can agree on that.

Just try and use a little more discretion next time, okay?

Okay, the DRM reversal seems to have brought all the crazies out of the woodwork or something; @NeoGAFShitPosts gained, like, 50 posts in the span of a few hours, only a few hours ago.

People actually wanted their physical games to have a shelf life (bitrot notwithstanding). What the hell?

Ah, I'm late. My power went out during a storm at like 7 PM yesterday an was out until 5:12 AM this morning. What a hot night that was without AC.

Anyhow.

It's kind of hard to make this list when I think about it because I've played so many horrible games, but most of em I've never beaten, and my memory is kind of blank when I try to make lists sometimes. So, for my current memory, here is my list.

3. Pokemon Battle Revolution: The Wheel of Hades

Imagine a game that is intended to be the third game in a series that is loved, adored, and has many features, including features that let you play the game without having to own the Game Boy Pokemon games.

Now imagine that game completely throwing all of that in the ground, spitting on it, stepping on it, hitting it with a shovel, then, throwing it in the trashcan. That's what you call Pokemon Battle Revolution.

In a short summary:

Stadium games have tons of Rental Pokemon - BR only has 12 and you can't swap them out, they are locked to two sets of 6 per your gender. So essentially, for your gender, you only have one team. That team sucks at that, level 50 Pokemon with stuff like Leer, Scratch, and even more awful stuff than that.

Stadium games have a lot of fun mini-games - BR, which takes place in an amusement park, has NONE.

Doesn't this look like it would?

EtRX6fD.jpg

Stadium games allow you to storage your Pokemon and easily trade and transfer to other versions. - BR clones your entire cartridge, only one cartridge, and no trading or transferring whatsoever.

Now I could go on with this list comparison, but let me talk about the actual game itself. One, each time you make a new save file, you have to go through the most annoying menu changing ever. It goes like this:

1. Carnival CG cutscene thing.
2. Lady behind the desk talking to you.
3. Menu screen.

Doesn't sound so bad, right? WRONG! For each time you toggle the cursor (there are 9 menu options plus they have their own options after you click A), you have to deal with the slowest NPC talk bubble of all time, that stuff moves at tortoise speeds. So, each time you move the DPad and select a cursor, you watch her 6-7 second wave animation, then the 20-30 seconds for her talking, where you can't do a single darn thing. You have to do this with each menu, 9x plus the things in between. Annoying as heck.

The true worst thing about this game, the thing that eclipses everything else is this gosh darn wheel. I swear to all that is holy and just, this wheel caused me anger like I have not experienced in a video game (well, secret rings is up there), but lets just say the game truly annoyed me.

So, I'm playing the game with the default trainer because none of my Pokemon can participate in the main mode because it doesn't auto make your Pokemon level 50, despite them doing this in the DS games. They also don't even underlevel your Pokemon if they're higher.

The Wheel is a mode in the main mode where each round, you spin this wheel and something happens. That something swaps your Pokemon with your opponents Pokemon, and since your party in this game only, literally, has one good Pokemon, you're screwed when this happens. You have to go through tons of rounds, and you cannot lose once, if you do, you have to start completely over.

Thus, back when I was more 'hardcore' with gaming, I kept going at this for hours and hours since my mindset back in the day (this was 2007), was that, if I owned a game, no matter how bad or good it was, I had to beat it. So, as I was getting agitated, and lost another time, I ended up dealing with the worst kind of unlucky luck you could imagine, and I lost at the last battle of the arena. I'm not a violent person, I can't even kill mice, but for a brief moment I was furious, I took the chair I was sitting on and threw it at the door, and shockingly, the legs went through the door and the chair was lodged inside the door. I was 16-17 at the time, and my friend and I were shocked, but about like 5 minutes later we started bursting out laughing. (Needless to say I used a poster to cover it so I wouldn't get in trouble, lol)

Gosh, that game truly infuriated me. A little bit later, I started playing again, my friend was trying to convince me to not play but I was just so determined, and out of all the unlucky, broken dumb mooglin' moogs, I made it to the last round with the most UNLUCKY team I could have possibly had. My friend was watching and was just begging me to stop while I was doing it, it truly seemed like there was 0% chance of winning, it was the worst luck I've gotten out of that wheel. I kept going on with it, really determined to win and we were both stunned when I won, it was quite possibly the best battling I've ever done in any Pokemon game.

Now that I've told that part, let me just say that the other modes, although not as bad as that wheel, they get pretty dumb, too. This isn't so much a review as I'm not covering everything, but this will give you a general idea of some of the bad parts of the game.

2. Sonic 2006
1. Sonic & The Secret Rings

I felt these two have been covered so I won't get into them.

Ending my short break by a half of a day. I'm feeling much less stress now and I really miss talking to you folks.

And I see people are writing the 3 worst games they've beaten. ...I think I'm going to write one myself too.
You also missed the Xbox One becoming actually kinda-sorta worth buying, too. (PS4's still a better value, though.)
