It's slower so it's not going to freak people out, the character design is a lot more warm, friendly and traditional, and it lends itself a lot better to multiplayer.Plus they figured out 3D platforming, whereas Sonic hasn't. Oh, and ironically Mario's control scheme has been streamlined to be primarily stick, A and B, whilst Sonic games tend to use upwards of 3 buttons with very little tutorialising. The former's a lot more accessible (and intuitive - "jump and run" is a more natural set of commands than "jump, spindash, boost, run, kick, homing attack, slide, somersault").
So simplicity has a role in it.
...but would the average Japanese consumer even know about the concept of Sonic games in 3D? Granted they may know it's about speed, but would they assume it'd be anything overly crazy like Sonic being in boost mode all the time and requiring tight and strict timing for jumps?

It's mostly about tone; Mario is a lot more whimsical and thus universally appealing, whereas Sonic is ostensibly "cool", so he just ends up appealing to 6-10 year olds.

I don't agree with this, If anything I'd say it's nostolgia that has a hand in Mario's continuing popularity, not to mention he was one of the first video game characters that people were introduced to, and the character has stuck with people's psych over these past decades.

Sonic has elements of character design that appeal to Japanese youth like the 'spikey hair', plus his current characterization could work as a Shonen series hero type.

You do bring one thing to mind though: Has SEGA even managed to figure out getting Sonic games to work in 3D? I enjoyed Sonic Generations, and had no issues with the 3D stages, but for the longest time I feel that Sonic would be best suited in being 2D and working on what made Sonic 3&K work.

My brother decided he was gonna get Zombi U off the eShop while it's half price and asked if I wanted his physical copy. He'dve probably just given it to me but I told him I'd send him ten bux for it. So I guess I own Zombi U now.

Will probably start over when I next actually play it. Put about an hour and a half into it last December but haven't touched it since. I remember it being pretty neat, though.

Alright, here's the relaunch of the poll I was talking about earlier!

Vote for your favorite Sonic portable zones!

Voting ends on November 9th 11:59PM

Gonna have to look over some games again before I vote. Not that familiar with things between Sonic SMS 2 and the Rush games.

I don't think I have anything with ripped labels, but my copies of both Smash Bros. 64 and Majora's Mask both have some dude's name written on them because I got them from a garage sale with some other stuff.

I'd rather get a game cheaper with some texta on it or whatever than pay eBay prices.

e: actually I think the ex-rental copy of Mega Man X that I got off a friend for like ten dollars is missing half the label but hahaha if you're gonna get a MMX cartridge for tenbux anywhere else.

SonicGAF's Song of the Day - #40

Song: Spring Stadium Act 1
Game: Sonic 3D (16-bit)
Composer: Jun Senoue

I'm surprised an arrangement of this track didn't end up in SA1 alongside all the other pieces that transitioned between the two games. It's got the right sound for it, not too far off of Station Square. Wouldn't have needed too much revising to clear out the lingering Sonic 3 bonus stage influences. Alas, to this day it remains one of the few tunes he hasn't revisited from Sonic 3D.

The first forty seconds are alright in their own carefree way and the section after that would be a perfectly adequate way to finish by most standards, not least of all because the chord progression starts to remind me of Pokémon R/S/E's style, but classic Senoue never stopped there; he always, always took it one step further. The drumming changes up just so while everything else slides straight into a subtlely higher intensity to make the climax a spectacular finish. It's a formula he used over and over between this game and SA1 to incredible effect.

I really miss that Senoue.

i am listening to the colors soundtrack and i'm reminded just how good that whole package was. i think i might have pulled back on my real feelings about it at the time. it borders on being a great game. i guess back then it felt wrong to heap praise onto a sonic game, but you know what? it was a very well put-together package. and i think being able to compare it to two more recent sonic games that don't exactly live up to it highlight its better parts even more.

If they had used this in SA1 It would probably have been best in casinopolis I feel. I don't actually think it's as good as some of the faster paced stuff from 3d blast, but it's still pretty good. I can hear the bonus stage memories you mention for sure. I think this is Senoue's second best soundtrack overall after SA1, and as this was basically a preview for that I'm not surprised.

SonicGAF's Song of the Day - #38

Song: Death Yard Zone ~ BOSS
Game: Sonic Rivals
Composer: Chris Rezanson
It definitely feels like it wants to build up to something, but the payoff never comes.

Actually, it sounds like something that came out of the UT2K4 soundtrack. Only, the UT2K4 soundtrack has a fair bit of awesome music, and this isn't really in the same caliber despite having the same style.

Absolutely adore this one - especially the synth that leads most of the song. Thing gives me goosebumps every time.

Honestly, I've always thought these were the weakest tracks in the entire soundtrack - that or the special stage music. Every other zone has music I'm particularly fond of, but this one just never did it for me. To reuse some of your complaints about Senoue's music prior, it feels like it never goes anywhere in particular; just kind of a dull, vaguely Vegas-y composition meandering about. It doesn't help that what's ostensibly the lead instrument seems to be quieter than the backing instrument (I think that's supposed to be kind of like a piano?).

Much, much prefer Jacques's take on the level. Even the goofy circus music.

Was the consensus that Sonic Rush Adventure bad? Because outside the shitty side missions, tedious boss fights, and the whatever vehicle stuff, I enjoyed it

more than Lost World Wii U, at any rate

Rush Adventure is great, and this is saying a lot coming from SonicGAF's Dimps Hater #1! I think the consensus is that it's a big improvement over Rush outside of the music.

Like you said, they actually made a good sky level in that one. Which is in direct contrast to the sky level in Sonic Rush, which is bottomless pit city with a very sparse art design.

They also got rid of those damable combat rooms from Sonic Rush, so yay

I actually skipped the rest of the DS games after Rush; I wasn't exactly enthralled with it, although I didn't hate it like qq more did, but I'd basically decided the boost gameplay wasn't really my thing.

Altitude Limit was absolute garbage. Yes, it's a giant ass scaffolding in the sky, but it's lazy level design to just plop pits EVERYWHERE.

Sky Canyon, Act 2 y'all.

I can't help but wonder if perhaps the secret behind Colors' success was actually having a shorter dev cycle than most entries. Less time, less staff, stronger focus.

It varies. Some people got really hung up on all that stuff and missed the fact that the levels themselves were massively improved.

Sky Canyon is an amazing level by comparison to Altitude Limit. Altitude Limit is the dimpest of the dimps

you know what? Sonic Advance 2 was better than Rush (well, except for unlocking Super Sonic... then Advance 2 is worse).

Wait what
An overly long boss fight is better than a piss-easy one.

And I can't find any of your guys' NNID. I want to be able to inflate my ego with time trail scores and my national position alone is depressing.

Played Lost World this weekend.

I don't really like it at all. Someone either in the OT or somewhere else compared some of the later levels to solving the Carnival Night barrel, and I completely agree. The game is terrible at conveying what it wants the player to do. On top of that, it can't seem to ever decide whether or not it wants to be Sonic Colors 2 or Super Mario Galaxy. And despite taking cues (along with entire boss fights, seemingly) from both, the game is so damned disjointed that the result is a game that isn't anywhere near as consistent and thoughtfully designed as Colors or as polished and full of creative level design as the Galaxy games.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how anyone thought a lot of the stuff in the game was a good idea.

Not even going to bother with the 3DS version since I hear that's a tragedy beyond the first few levels. Shame, since I enjoyed the demo.

The more I played Lost World, the more this sank in. I've always held the opinion that Colors Wii was the best Sonic title to come out of this gen by far, and it's gotten even more apparent when comparing it to the Sonic titles after it. It's still kind of mindblowing how good of an overall package Colors is compared to what succeeded it.

Also, Happy Birthday, Coldman!

It's been really annoying to see so many people discount Rush Adventure because of that stuff over the years. It boggled my mind that people would whine about replaying the levels when they were so much better (i.e. less DIMPS'd) than Rush's. And beyond that, I usually did good enough in the first place that I didn't need to replay levels more than twice, and the only time I didn't have fun doing it was Haunted Ship.

And really, I thought all that other stuff was fine (ehhh, the missions maybe not as much)

Just got a copy of Sonic 1 on the Master System. Kinda surprised how fun it is, actually. Most games I've played on the Master System are a bit clunky.

Playing on an NTSC Master System. Does the game play slower when it's on PAL, or am I essentially experiencing what PAL players experienced?

I think the PAL version is slower, at the very least the music may well come out slower.
Sonic 1 MS is sweet, this gives me another opportunity to say that its the real Sonic 1, screw your Spring Yards and your Marble Zones, I've got Bridges and Jungles!

I don't think I like Advance 3 anymore... now I see why the hate on it. I try to enjoy it but I keep ending up just shutting off my GBA in frustration.

sigh I'm almost there. Advance 3 is the last awful Dimps Sonic game I need to play. (I'm avoiding Lost World 3DS)

EDIT: This is literally the worst boss battle I've ever fought.

EDIT2: i got my 5th game over for the night and its the slowest game over ever

my brain is fried

im so tired of dimps

why do i torture myself so much

im gonna just play SA2B, itll clear my mind

Schala I shot you a NNID friend request. Maybe I should have spelled out my full username in the message but whatever.
The other stages are fun when you don't concern yourself with ranks or objectives and dick around in them.
Speaking of which, it's kinda fun to do this with the wisps in lost world. None that I recall are used for red rings, although some are needed for progress.

On that note (heh), Rythym isn't that bad. It's just kinda like a different version of hover.

Not if I can help at all
I will not let him take it over
Sonic, what are you doin' here?
I heard you were on a quest to find the Master Emerald
You know me and you don't get along
I don't think that's the point right now, Knuckles
I know how much the emerald means to you
And I wanna help get it back
Stop bein' stubborn and think
Well I guest you're right
Ya damn right, Knuckles

YA DAMN RIGHT, KNUCKLES!
