Deathtraps, deathtraps, deathtraps, deathtraps.

There are also enemies that are placed at the edge of where you are suppose to land, and they drive their spear at you the second you're in range of the platform. It's 50/50 whether or not you're going to be knocked back off and rinse and repeat due to this.

*edit*

Was browsing through the images on my computer and I located this image I edited a while back on another forum where there were some Nintendo/Sega disputes.

*edit 2*

Seems the deathtraps were only real bad in the second water level, (they were all of over the place and I don't look forward to playing that level again.) and I found out you can utilize R to do an air dash so I think that solves the spear enemy placement problem I think. I currently beat the desert level and it was enjoyable.

I made it to the second Casino level and I think I'm done with this game. The engine itself is kinda nice and enjoyable, the enemies and themes are neat, the music is too, but this game severely suffers from what Dimps is known for, "deathpits".

Any time I am about to enjoy myself with this title, I soon after run into a death pit. I notice the bosses tend to have a lot of health, but that can rearranged if you set the difficulty mode to easy so there's no real issue there. I thought the bosses were going to be all the same, and even though you fight them in a similar way, at least it's not like Sonic Advance 2 where it's literally the same exact boss over and over.

I'll give Blaze The Cat a try, but this level design is just not for me. I've already delt with Dimps enough to play this to completion. I don't think this game is terrible either, It's probably like a 6.0/10.

Yeah, that's Rush in a nutshell. Rush Adventure and Colors DS are both (generally) a lot better about not baiting the player straight into nigh-unavoidable hazards, if you want to give the formula another shot down the line without the level designers snickering behind your back at every turn.

i found this amusing, in an interview Naka said that if he stayed at SEGA, he would of been forced to work on Sonic games for the rest of his life, and then he named other game creators that he wish would be free

"One of the reasons I left Sega was, if I stayed there, I would have had to just make Sonic games. Right now I don't have to make Sonic anymore, so I'm enjoying that freedom a lot. ...Like with Nintendo: Miyamoto has been making Mario games. He's under that too. He has to keep on making Mario games. [Eiji] Aonuma has to keep making Zelda games. [Hideo] Kojima has to make Metal Gear games. I wish he could take that off of everyone's shoulders so they could create other stuff, like new stuff. Because that's healthier for the industry. Movie directors create all sorts of movies, and the movie industry is healthy. I wish the game industry was like that as well." - Yuji Naka

I guess he wants Iizuka to rot in Sonic hell. I don't know for some reason I get the feeling Iizuka's one of the reasons he left, and that there might be some hard feelings, but that's just me. I think Naka decided to leave after Shadow the Hedgehog, cause he apparently left in the middle of middle of Sonic 06 development. He probably couldn't any longer stand his name being associated with bad games that were being made by Iizuka mainly.

edit: lol, this picture, such contrast. Naka just looks like a typical Japanese man, and his games show that he is pretty Japanese with his philosophies. Iizuka is dressed in all leather, and is a fan of darkness and American culture, and it shows in his games. I imagine they must of had clashing views.

HEY YOU GUYS.

Jet Set Radio is pretty weird. And awesome. And weird.

I don't like that the tutorial (not the in-game one where you recruit the GGs, but the one on the main menu under the TUTORIAL option) thinks it's a game about tricks and shit, when it's a game about avoiding the fuzz. But oh well! Game was great, and it's 6 pounds.

SIX POUNDS.

I love the value for money SEGA is offering with its downloadable games nowadays. :)

I tried out the demo the other day, that tutorial was absolutely awful, the explanations were shoddy and half assed for a tutorial, took me some time to successfully pull of that 30 combo thing, most irritating was the part where the game is like "go down the stairs to the halfpipe" WHAT STAIRS?! oh I found them eventually but you know an arrow would've been nice to overcome my apparent blindness.
After bumming around in that tutorial for longer than i'd like to I finally start up the game to get greeted with more tutorials where on one hand they at least show you what to do but they can drag a bit, the grabbing onto the back of cars one was overly long but if you skip them you wont know the specific path the game wants you to follow.
So yeah not the greatest first impression, I may just wait for the inevitable future deal of the week purchase but I guess we'll see when I next throw some money on the PSN store, i'll likely pick up Hell Yeah when that comes out which is actually published by Sega if i'm not mistaken, anyone else here looking forward to it?

The demo got better the further I got into it- once I'd left that awful tutorial, passed the "actual" tutorial and completed the first mission, I was happy enough with what I'd played to just buy the whole thing. But yeah, first impressions ain't great.

I do hope they release JSRF at some point, just so I can compare. Heck, I'd imagine once Shenmue/Skies of Arcadia are out, they might move on to their early Xbox releases... maybe? Shenmue II/JSRF/Panzer Dragoon Orta seem like the next obvious step. Unless they can convince Capcom to release Power Stone/Cannon Spike. >_>

I've been playing it a fair bit over the past two days, after missing out on this during the Dreamcast's heyday. There are some frustrating moments (seriously screw Yo-Yo's race), but it's generally pretty awesome.

I remember Rush pissing me off a lot more than Rush Adventure.

So. Many. Bottomless. PITS. Oh my god, the sky level man. That's always been the downside of Sonic games, since you're so damn fast and you're pretty much invincible as long as you grab a single ring. Game designers get lazy with the difficulty and just give the levels a shitload of bottomless pits that negate your speed and rings.

And don't get me started on all the "uh oh, room sealed off, fight generic Eggman robos!" thing they did over and over again in Rush.

Something I've always found interesting and curious is that within 6-9 months of Yuji Naka leaving Sonic Team, they announced a NiGHTS sequel.

Keep in mind that Yuji Naka went on for years and years and years about NiGHTS being his "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", in reference to Steven Spielberg's insistence that he'll never do a sequel to that movie because it's his best work. Yuji Naka considered the Sega Saturn version of NiGHTS to be "perfect". They struggled to make a few sequels over the years, but none of them ever got far enough because Naka's high standards always shot them down.

Takashi Iizuka was the lead game designer on the Sega Saturn version of NiGHTS. All things considered, it was his break-out role. He had just as much reason to consider NiGHTS to be "his baby" as Naka did.

It is not difficult to envision a scenario where Iizuka went around Yuji Naka to greenlight a NiGHTS sequel, and upon finding out, Naka left the company. There have been more than a few industry murmurs that Yuji Naka is a bit of a drama queen, and he's threatened to quit over NiGHTS-related stuff before.

It just makes sense.

Rush Adventure has better level design than Rush, imo. That's one thing I don't like about Dimps's level design in general--the pits. So many pits. Once in a while is alright. But a lot of the time? Naw.

I want Skies HD so fucking bad. It would be amazing~

JSR gets better way after the tutorial. I always find tutorial levels so restricting anyway. I haven't played it in a long time, though, so I wonder if it holds up. Is it a decent port, otherwise, though?

And Capcpom doesn't seem to care about its older series, so I don't think Power Stone would be in the cards because they're fools. Just thinking about Rockman X Over makes me feel irritated.

The console versions (PS3 in particular, apparently) have hitching issues related to how fragmented your hard drive is - and unfortunately, consoles lack defrag options like most operating systems have, so it's directly related to how old/oft-used your console is.

The Steam version is great, speaking from personal experience. That it's locked at 30 FPS sucks, but I can run the game at 1920x1080 with 8xMSAA without dropping from that 30 FPS, so there's that. There's evidently an issue with the initial run for some people wherein it'll run really slowly, but rebooting the computer fixes it - I didn't encounter this issue, but it's come up several times in the |OT|.

Also, Capcpom rereleased Power Stone on the PSP, so, y'know, digital rereleases aren't entirely outside the realm of possibility. I own this version, in fact. (But the game's so haaaaaard, I don't like it very much :I)

Skies HD is a thing that will happen within the next year. Count on it. Follow the money trademarks.

JSR HD seems to be a decent port. Some people complain about the 360 version being naff, but I'm on PS3 and it looks gorgeous, no sound issues or framerate drops or anything. It's great. PC version is probably even better.

And I brought up Power Stone/Cannon Spike because I think they've released all their other DC games on DD, and Sega and Capcom games are everything that console is remembered for. That, and SoulCalibur (also out already). I just want Cannon Spike.

Just sat down with my DS and played some Rush and Advance 2. Altitude Limit BY FAR has more pits. In fact, many of Sky Canyon's pits are avoidable if you take the upper route, something I can't say for Rush.

I've blocked those two levels out of my mind.

Something I've thought about is how I wonder what the multiplayer stages from Sonic 3 would look like if they were full levels. I can't be the only one who wants Chrome Gadget and Balloon Park...and Azure Lake as full levels.

I honestly want to make full level versions of those stages. Hmmm...

I actually had fun with Sky Canyon

and fuck yeah Knuckles boss theme (but fuck the fight)

Seriously though, Rush Adventure was a lot of fun. I liked Marine. I liked the travelling. I even liked the damn races, and fuck, some of them were cheap. Only thing I didn't enjoy was the submarine, but that's still not even terrible.

And I think the replaying of the levels was a perfect fit, seeing as how I'd be doing it for a better time and score anyways. The Rush games just have that kind of gameplay. The materials felt like an extra incentive.

Also, do have to say I really did love Rush, but jesus that game pissed me off, lol.

Buying more bad Sonic games!

I was fooled into buying Rush Adventure. Not a very good game. Stages were better designed but they were still kind of eh, and the boss fights takes too many damn hits. Oh and the filler content was very very annoying.

Hey, I might as well knock them all out of the way since I've gone through 2006 and Shadow. Although I'm mainly playing Rush Adventure because I didn't give it the time of day due to a certain touch screen moment I forget. Will tackle it on right now. (I'm skipping all the cutscenes, though)

Also doing this to see why some people are referring the first two Rush games higher than Colors DS.

I like Rush Adventure, despite the filler bits. Less death trap rooms, better trick system. It's not Classic Sonic, but if you can accept that, you can have a fun time with it. Godlike muisc, as expected.

Well don't worry cause I give Sonic 4 a 7.0, so not being classic Sonic isn't that big of a deal to me. (Although I prefer it of course)

I didn't care whether it was classic sonic or not, I just find it a mediocre game. I'll give it another chance when I do my marathon.

For the record, I thought Colors DS was what the Rush games should of have been.

So how do I reach the mechanical island? I've talk to the NPCs, but they only mention the obvious. My boat doesn't have enough to get there.

Does Marine want you to gather anything? I remember that periodically you have to go on fetch quests in order for her to upgrade your ship and proceed.

I take it I have to refight the boss in this "mission"?

*EDIT*

Found out you can just draw from other islands.

Just got past the third level which is the Coral one, and I can say I'm actually enjoying myself compared to the first game. It's not how they say on the SEGA forum, "dimpstacular". So far the touchscreen games aren't really bothersome, they're just a distraction.

Glad you figured it out, but the fetch quests get reeeeally annoying down the line :p

Guess I'll find out.

I'm tellin ya, go in with the mindset of "getting a better score on this level just because" and you won't even care

The amount of materials you get from a given level is dependent on the rank you get.

S Rank = 4 materials
A Rank = 3 materials
B Rank = 2 materials
C Rank = 1 material

To my knowledge, if you're S-ranking everything grinding really isn't a huge deal. I think at most, I had to play later levels twice - but given the fact that you unlock Blaze the Cat right around that time, it became routine to play a level once as Sonic and then once again as Blaze, and I'd usually have enough materials for whatever new boat Tails wanted to build.

Ah yes, but keep in mind I was a B/C student in Rush Adventure, so I had to haul my ass back through Acts several times. I assume Kokonoe is better than I am at the game, so hopefully she won't find the material gathering as harsh as I did :p
