I'd go:

Sonic 3 and Knuckles=Sonic 2 (Differences are too small at times) while Sonic 1 is just a tiny bit behind.
Sonic 2 has Casino Night...if it only had that stage, the game would still be great to me.

Let's pretend that was Labyrinth Act 4. (I remember it being relatively easier than all of Scrap Brain and Labyrinth)

Water levels are simply the devil. Every single one has been a nightmare for me...especially Hydrocity, that moving wall freaked me out for the longest!

I personally loved Hydrocity. My favorite stage in Sonic 3.

It's a very fun level once me and my brother got over our crippling fear of forced scrolling, it looks real cool and the music is awesome...BUT Carnival Night is still my favorite level from that. So colorful, so energetic...sooo many lights! I even thought the music from the Sonic and Knuckles Collection worked well for it, in addition to the main music.

Carnival Night is a cool stage... only when you know how to get past the barrel.

I never got through it as a kid. :( I feel so damn stupid when I learned about the solution many years later thanks to the internet.

It was a real puzzle. Just remember anyone who says they figured it out first try is a dirty liar. No one knew how to do that thing first try...no one!

I feel like the only person on the face of the earth that actually likes Labyrinth Zone. Easily my second favorite stage behind Star Light Zone.

You'd be the first I know.

Man this Sonic 3 level select code is hard business. I bet if I hadn't destroyed my thumb years ago with EWGF practice, I would have it by now.

EDIT: 50 tries later...still at it.

Edit no Jutsu: Okay my thumb feels weird, enough practice for one morning.

It's so ridiculously difficult. I've never ever gotten it.

Yeah, it's a ridiculously hard code. You basically have to do each input in a single frame.

I always used the Sonic 2 -> Sonic 3 cartridge swap trick as a kid to enable the Sonic 3 level select, heh.

I had it down to perfection somehow as a kid, it was something to do with starting at the right time or something.

That said, S3&K's level select was so easy it wasn't found for ages after the game came out! I had to use an action replay to mess with debug mode back then.

My pad is like really really loose. I wonder if I had a newer one, I might have more luck. Watch me do this in a flash on a keyboard...but no, I must do it by hand!

This is the only thing I think about when I play that stage.

I haven't done this ever but I have glitched it out where Knux destroyed the bridge on Angel Island and we fell down into a black hole of glitchy code, messed up graphics, darkness...and then dying as the Hydrocity music started up! I think me and my brother discovered what hell is like in a Sonic game...I bet it was a precursor to Sonic 06!

I hope I'm not alone but when I'm Super Sonic, I like to alternate between left and right on my controller insanely fast, making him be all twitchy and like a funky sort of dance...I think I just like pressing buttons a lot. I wish Hyper Sonic was twice as fast as Super.

It's pure cheese, but this scene is pretty sweet. I want a full version of the orchestral mix at the end.

Ehhhhh.

It's cool on a surface level, I guess. Shadow almost literally takes the kid gloves off and shit gets real.

But, like, I dunno. None of it feels earned. Shadow never felt particularly powerful - we see him warp around in the opening cutscene, which is silly because I guess it's supposed to be a stealth mission or whatever and here he is exploding robots and drawing attention to himself when he could just silently teleport inside the base.

Shadow's "power" represents itself in-game as the rage mode, but that's just an auto-fire homing attack that more often than not will just get you killed because it is uncontrollable and sort of pointless in a game where you are asked to chain together homing attacks to cross bottomless pits.

But what "power" besides that? For all the hullabaloo about Shadow's "power", we never see Shadow use it against anything - even when he's evil. The best we get is in Shadow the Hedgehog, where he can for some reason explode himself. But that doesn't seem particularly useful in large scale battles for as long as it seems to take to recharge. Besides that, between SA2 and Heroes, all we hear is a lot of gesticulating about how dangerous Shadow is but outside of the warping stuff every now and again we never get a sense that he actually is dangerous. He never does anything dangerous or even interesting with his power.

And it's hard to tell what is even "in-continuity" - Sonic Team HAS no continuity to speak of, really. It's just, "whatever we wanted to reference from the previous games". Take the wrist bands, for example: those are a reference to Sonic X, which is entirely separate from the games.

When he finally does cut loose, all he does is... run through a bunch of clone enemies. It's not even a fight. "We didn't want to bother animating a battle, so instead we'll just have him run through enemies like he picked up an invincibility power-up and shared it with Rouge and Omega."

Eh.

Nothing is underrated about Sonic music. Ever. It can never be overrated or underrated. It is the best videogame music of ALL TIME. Or...something or another.

Mmm, I suppose tiggerkiddo has touched a fuzzy lately.

That's a hilarious oversight. Can't say it has happened to me though.

That was really your first experience with it? It seems like you have to fall to a precise location for that to even happen and most people would either just fall straight down or fall all the way to the right or left.

There's a Sonic fan game with those things

What is it called?

It was. It's more likely then it seems if you hit the left button at all as there is a spike pit as well. Generally after that I just ended up not pressing any of the directional buttons just in case.

I don't remember the last scene but I don't think I've liked one single cutscene outside of Shadow roundhouse kicking Silver.

The scene where sonic stares at the moon where the feather he blows from Elise rises to up...it was a competely well done scene that was really great. Had Sonic and Elise just been "friends" outside that awkward kiss it wouldn't had been bad.

Shoot me I liked the ending cutscene - really good ending to a shit shit game.

I know we love to hate Sonic 06 but I like all the ideas that were in the game, I just wish they could fix that broken gameplay...if they managed to clean it up it could be playable.

btw Ice Cap is the best Soinc 3 zone music and presentation :p

I can't even manage to remotely like any of the narrative elements in Sonic 2006. And I play RPGs with ridiculous storylines about going to the moon and meeting rabbits or some guy being a dream or some garbage about parallel worlds not even being handled adequately.

It isn't the shitty cutscenes with them traipsing through a flower patch or them kissing. That isn't it. It's the entire story which comes off as completely asinine. It's a Dragon Ball Z season gone absolutely wrong. I don't come to Sonic for a deep, emotional Final Fantasy-esque story because it's a platformer. I can probably accept the President in SA2. I can probably accept Station Square in SA1. But Sonic 2006 is so insipid and fanfiction-esque, and tries to take itself so seriously that it ends up falling flat on its face from a narrative and cutscene direction standpoint.

Maybe the CG cutscenes have ... the first and very last CG cutscenes have reasonably decent (and I'm saying this in a not-too-serious manner because after Colours/Unleashed, the CG cutscenes in 2006 by comparison aren't that great) direction, but outside of those, Sonic 2006 was a disaster in terms of art direction, level design, level objective design, cutscene direction, character modelling, gameplay, etc. Fixing the cruddy gameplay isn't going to fix the rest of the garbage in the game.

I'm saying this as someone who adores Sonic Unleashed's attempt at creating an RPG-like world. At least that one was successful because it stopped taking itself seriously after a while.

When I got a capture card, I never really wanted to take the time to do it properly, but about the time I started capturing video for Sonic Unleashed DLC to post on TSSZ, a friend of mine mentioned that despite the fact he hated Sonic Unleashed, I made the game look really cool because I knew how to play it well. So he sort of dared me to try and make Sonic 06 look good, and in the process of trying to record a "clean" run of Crisis City, I ended up capturing footage of some pretty funny, pretty dumb stuff. That was also, incidentally, the first video where I forced myself to learn Sony Vegas so I could ditch Windows Movie Maker.

And then not long after I joined GAF, there was a thread on "unbelievable glitches". That was all the motivation I needed. The entire video literally came together in the span of about four or five hours - that was capturing, editing, uploading and processing. It felt crazy simple and easy to do at the time, but I guess the gears had been turning in my head for a good four years at that point.
Bolded is impossible.

You did the Sonic 2006 video for a thread and look at how it blew up in the end. Even if you didn't play it to completion often, I feel like you know the game extremely well just because of all the time you put into the videos and stuff.

I can't do that. Not with 2006. :|

I actually really like pretty much every level in Sonic 3, Hydrocity and Marble Garden included. And I wouldn't say MGZ feels like Marble Zone; nowhere near enough lava for that.

And it's not nearly as slow, boring and closed in.
The only similarities I see are the name and theme combo, that aside they're like night and day, one has you zooming around on flying discs and zipping across the maze like network of steep hills, the other makes you push stone blocks and avoid crushers in tight tunnels.

Hey guys I don't know if you noticed but I really hate Marble Zone.

I didn't want to imply I thought they were that similar, just I thought there were enough similarities that I considered it a very much improved update.

And it's impossible to hate Marble Zone because it has lava. Lave in any level is awesome.

I beat Sonic Spinball yesterday

I'm sorry.

Yeah, I'm not going to pretend that it's particularly well-animated or written, or that the characters involved have any more depth than a puddle.

But taken as a brief moment in time - hero vs evil magic clone army, the only people he can trust by his side, theme music powerup active - it is cool. It's the sort of thing the kids playing the game will remember down the line, as opposed to the insane bugs
kind of like a lot of GAF with SA2
.

...I don't know why I'm playing devil's advocate for '06 defenders.

All I remember about Sonic Spinball was that sewer level.

Apparently there was stuff after that level but I was too occupied with Sonic 3 and Knuckles to care.
