This is me, but with Donkey Kong 64. I got everything in that game, b.

E V E R Y T H I N G

Item: Five-hundred (500) bananas per level, color-coded and thus only collectable by the appropriate character. These are spent to unlock a boss in each level. Item: Banana coins, used as currency to buy new moves, also color-coded so that only one character can collect each different color. Item: Twenty-five (25) golden bananas per level, five per character, used to unlock the entrances to new levels on the hub. Item: Five (5) blueprint pieces per level, which are worth one golden banana for each handed in, and give you extra time to complete the final level. Also color-coded! Item: Five (5) banana medals per level, one per character, earned by completing a mini-game for each character and used to unlock the Jetpak game. Item: Two (2) banana fairies per level, and four (4) in the hub, used for unlocking items in the bonus menu. Item: One (1) battle crown per level, and two (2) in the hub, earned by completing a mini-game in which you kill a bunch of enemies, used to unlock a door in the final level. Item: One (1) Boss Key per level, usually found by defeating a boss, used to unlock the final boss fight. Item: One (1) Rareware coin, earned for reaching a particular score in an emulated version of Rare's first game, Jetpak for the ZX Spectrum. Item: One (1) Nintendo coin, earned for completing eight boards of an emulated version of the Donkey Kong arcade game. Both coins are used to unlock a door in the final level that contains a Boss Key. And all of this is ignoring the ammo for weapons, the musical instrument charges for special music-based attacks, the orange grenades for shits 'n' giggles, the banana-skin film for photographing (and thus acquiring) the banana fairies, and the crystal coconuts for special movement abilities.

I COLLECTED ALL OF THEM

WHY DID I DO THIS

You know ViewtifulJC, you really ARE the last member of the DK Crew.

I only did the collection missions that were required (the coins and boss keys)

i don't even think i ever played dk 64, longer than a few minutes.

People kept telling me it was bad

On the flip side, my Mom got me an N64 and like 12 games for Christmas in 2001 or 2002. I was fully in an era where everybody I knew was like "oh yeah DK64 is one of Rare's greatest."

I remember writing one of my earliest user reviews, on Gamespot, about how fucking awful I thought the game was and getting mostly thumbs down ratings. The DK64 defense force is real.

So basically it's kind of like how everyone's opinion just suddenly changed on Metal Gear Solid IV or Grand Theft Auto IV? Going from "OMG BESTEST GAME EVER" to "wow, that was actually pretty terrible".

Rare folks stick by a lot of their stuff.

The main complaint I kept hearing about DK 64 and its seems like they were trying to do way too much.

I have never been a fan of alot of rare stuff , I don't like how a lot of the characters look, and the concept of sticking googly eyes on stuff doesn't fill me with nostalgia, rather a cringe, but a lot of the games gameplay was solid. Refreshingly surprised, yooka and laylee looked alright.

The thing I will give rare credit for is golden eye and Perfect dark, not for the games themselves. But without that, Aliens and ghost in the shell, halo wouldn't exist. And Halo, was formative to say the least. Its one of my favorite series, also it kind of changed console shooters, and the land scape of triple A gaming so much, along with how space and space militates and people are portrayed in multiple forms of media that its hard to imagine the, halo, or rather golden eye and perfect dark not existing timeline. Same thing with Aliens, and Mad max with the umteen bajilliondy things they influenced.

Rambling again, shadow guitar looks neato

They weren't doing too much at all. Donkey Kong 64 is just Banjo-Kazooie 3, but deliberately made to be as slow and obtuse as possible.

Imagine if every level in Super Mario 64 was the size of Hyrule Field from Ocarina of Time, and it was mandatory to explore every inch five separate times as five different characters. The levels are already too big for just one character, but now you've got five to deal with.

I imagine somewhere in the design document it was written, "Create platformer that will last 100+ hours."

So they stretched, and stretched, and stretched until they had a game that was sufficiently long enough, without any care or attention paid to the fact that nobody would want to play something so bloated and sluggish. But... well, that was the late 90's, for you. Games were being advertised for their length. A 70+ hour game was considered a good thing.

But I also feel like DK64 was the tipping point where a lot of people started to say "okay maybe shorter games might actually be better"

I know it's all about context and all that but I found Generations too short, and Unleashed just right.

I found generations to be short for entirely different reasons. There is a lot of stuff that should be in that video game, that isn't in that video game, and while it frequently gets called out on it... its still not enough

70+ hour game is pretty good depending on the game for me. I have logged in stupid amounts of hours into games. I think I have damn near 700 on borderlands 2. But I get what you are saying, the reason the games I play work for so long because the content is interesting and its meant for, long play sessions and playability in some cases. And while some would argue playability for platformers, If you make the game too long and filled with nothing, not only is anyone going to want to play your game, they might not wanna play the next one. Looking at you assassins creed.

So I found two copies of Sonic 06. My old copy, and a copy in Gamespot for $55.

I'm tempted to play it guys. SOMEBODY HELP!

And here we see the majestic Eggman in his natural running state.

As someone who beat Sonic 06....it certainly is an experience to behold :l. I mean, the game is bad, and very buggy, but is bad in the charming sort of way; you can't help but just laugh at it throughout your playthrough.

I think that is important to play 06 once just to see how low the series went before its rise from Unleashed onwards; gives you a greater appreciation for Sonic where he is today :).

The soundtrack of 06 is amazing as well and very few of the levels offer some enjoyment (the Water Mach Speed Section of Kingdom Valley is my highlight from 06; such beautiful visuals matched with this amazing track :')).

If you really want to dive into the mess that is Sonic 06.....try to have fun and don't be afraid to brake the game up a bit :D! It can help make annoying segments a lot easier (using a metal create to glitch through a wall to prevent suffering through Silver's ball puzzle in Dusty Desert, very helpful).

Like Rise of Lyric

....That doesn't sound that bad; the core game is very glitch like 06 and the game is very boring sometimes. But it is the 'unofficial' Jak 4 in my book and....for what it is, it at least comes a little close to that even if the game fails to even do that right (the collection system in the game is just stupid :().

Loved watching both BrainScratchComms and the Grumps play through this mess; very enjoyable throughout :).

You know, I'm up for shitty games. I can laugh at cringeworthy stuff because I have a secret schadenfreude tendency, both towards myself and the game industry peeps involved in making stuff like that and being forced to ship it. It's half the reason I can actually play shit like Monster Monpiece, Hyperdimension Neptunia etc both because the gameplay is well-designed and the constant realization that there are people out there who get off on these things.

That being said, I absolutely couldn't finish 06. Not because it's got hilariously bad decisions peppering gameplay all over. Not because the story is a cringeworthy edgy mess.

It was because of the loading times. Screw that shit. I have about four dozen other better ways to waste my time.

Still don't understand how Sonic Team messed up a simple thing like the loading screen X(. I mean, the game loads the same things over and over again throughout the hub world and the main zones are so chopped up thanks to the stupid loading times.

I tried playing through Hyperdimension Neptuina Rebirth 1 and while I like the characters, world and gameplay....the stupid difficulty spikes throughout really put a damper on things :l. On moment a boss fight is easy then the next the game makes things really hard for the player :(. Oh well, the game is enjoyable to me :).

Eggman being the most hilarious kinda comes with the territory of being an rotund comedy villain

And $55 is way too much for Sonic 2K6

Can we safely say now that this Boom business was not a fruitful endeavour? then again you guys know much more about the comic and tv show side of things than I do.

I wouldn't wish the task of penning a followup to the nonsense spaghetti logic that series devolved into on anyone, especially if it has to account for the events that set up the Zero series.

The cartoon still has about....24+ episodes left to air on Cartoon Network (as 26 episodes aired at this point and they produced 50 episodes), so the cartoon will stick around for at least another year (till 2016 likely).

The comics characters seemingly have a shot at appearing in the main-line comics (Sticks, Orb-bot, Cube-bot, a few of the side characters and maybe even Boom Eggman (as he looks different enough to stick out with the main universe Eggman)) and I could see a cross-over during or after this World Unite Arc where the main cast's meet up for something (both Eggman's team up to wipe out both of them?). It is a shame the comic is ending but it will live on through other means (Sticks joining the Freedom Fighters? Sonic Universe having some Boom side-stories? Another Cross Over?).

The games.....I could see another 3DS game coming this fall (to advertize the shows next set of episodes) or skins of the Boom versions of Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/Amy for the next Sonic Team Sonic as a pre-order bonus or something. Nothing more then that though, considering how much a Boom the Wii U game was.

Regarding the toys, those seem to be selling quite well (don't have numbers though), so that is good :D. I could see another line of Boom toys be made for the remaining episodes of the show (or a future second season if another one is picked up).

Overall, the venture that is Sonic Boom seems to be mixed; the media and toy portion of the project seems to be a hit (the TV Show is doing well despite bad airing time, the Comic while ending seems to be merging with the main-line comic through some fashion) while the games end of the project (likely the most expensive investment) seems to be a utter bomb.

Bad news: Kellie is leaving SEGA.

Good news: our boy RubyEclipse is back.

Nice, Ruby was good people.

The comics characters seemingly have a shot at appearing in the main-line comics (Sticks, Orb-bot, Cube-bot, a few of the side characters and maybe even Boom Eggman

Orbot and Cubot in Boom are indistinguishable from their mainline counterparts as is.

I also suspect that what they mean by Boom showing up in other titles is that they'll be the new original content for the Super Special Magazine and such until they get through their supply of scripts, not that they'll start cropping up in StH/SU.

Though considering pretty much every Sonic character from any medium besides Pender's stuff is absorbed into the comic universe in some form, and Sticks is going dimension hopping anyway, she's probably sticking around.

Everyone else is probably gone. RIP Fastidious Beaver.

Ian, re: Boom:

So does that mean we can Sticks in the main universe now?
Ian Flynn said:
Most probably not, given that the cartoon is still going strong. It took us a year or two to get access to Cream even after Sonic X ended.

I can't get into things, so this is all I'm saying on the matter:
- it was not because of sales. Boom was doing just fine.
- it was not because of SEGA.

We'll see what the future holds, but I'll miss having the monthly book to play with. Had some fun stories lined up for it.

Curious. If it was selling well enough, and Sega didn't pull it... ???

The Boom comic was really nicely drawn (and colored), but it felt like it was a contemporary of the really old 90's Sonic comics, back when they had no continuity and were all gags. Gags are good (comics should be entertaining and not be all doom and gloom all the time, especially to bring in kids, which are sorely missing from the industry), but it felt to me that was all the comic was going to ever be.

Nonstop gags is all that Boom is anyway, to be fair. And that's fine. Those early Archie issues are still some of my favorites.

Screw continuity, gimme good well written self contained story anytime.
I mean heck Capcom revived Bison/Vega/Dictator twice now, Sigma coming back should surprise no one :V
