First post.. I wanted to share a fun pic but I googled "Sonic funny image" and I think I'm about to lose my job now.
it's definitely frustrating. and then it gets into better franchises too because somehow that's the market now. like valkyria chronicles 2 with this:

image423.png

she's 13.

at least selvaria, who might be considered fanservicey, was 22 and was dressed for war. actually i really love the designs for all the characters in the first vc. even though the girls are wearing skirts, it matches what the guys are wearing and i wouldn't have a hard time believing that in an alternate 1930s.

Yep, the chara design in the first VC was good and actually believable. This is... well at least she doesn't have a 100cm chest. Sadly I've seen 14 years old looking like they're 18. It was not fun.

PS: that's not even a skirt, it's a fucking belt.

In the era of free porn I fail to understand this.
At least get a decent game, like Dragon's Crown, Bayonetta, Lollipop Chainsaw.. How did Hyperdimension Neptunia become a successful IP? I bought it because of people recommending it to me 'cause of console wars and such, and I thought the concept could be interesting.
All I got was embarassing "cutscenes" (I had to stop playing even when alone, I couldn't bear it), a boring and convoluted battle system and... nothing else.

Senran Kagura.. a friend of mine bought it "for just 25€! You'll see this is gonna be a rare game, Gamestop only got two copies and the gameplay is actually good!".
No it's not, it's some kind of Streets of Rage x Devil May Cry, and after FIVE minutes I found out you can easily rack up a 1000-hit combo while in air. And the mechanic that involves dresses getting shred if you take hits is so dumb, it's like a 13 years old came up with it.

TLDR: Who the fuck buys these games, just masturbate.
Haha. It's like you had a meal at one of those Italian restaurants that were fronts for the mob. They're not in the business of serving you a meal.

Although, apparently, buying even physical videos of pornography is still big somehow in Japan.

That was a perfectly chosen image. Exactly the height of my screen so I would see the image for a moment before scrolling down and reading "she's 13."

Honestly the canonical age of a sexualized character doesn't matter to me, it all depends on how old she looks and acts.

I have some opinions about Dragons Crown and Lolipop chain saw gameplay

As far as tldr goes, Its something I ask myself sometimes. I'm not saying that people shouldn't buy these games. However there are certain aspects that kind of , no pun intended, turn me off with these types of games.

Bayonetta for instance, her character is an archetype I kind of grew out of, or maybe like Shala on the last page was never really into in the first place. She is this magical felcia/catwoman/trish kind of thing. It isn't necessarily bad, just call me they make the Captain marvel/Wonder woman archetype female led action games. Bayo not for me.

What i am getting at is, its not necessarily the designs most of the time, but the personalities of the characters more than anything. I guess that's why I have enjoyed a hyperneptunia game or two, I thought it was funny. And on that same token, why I wont buy stuff like senrenkagura, I don't like the characters. Its why I like characters in neither realms games despite the narratives, prominent example being mk, being super duper dumb.

As for Bayonetta.. yeah it's exaggerate but the character is not as submissive as the ones you find in the other games I didn't like. Maybe it's a little stereotypical, but so are the Neptunia characters (there's the moe one, the tutor etc). I'm sure many bought Bayonetta for the ass and the tits, but behind lies a solid gameplay at least.

Maybe I'm just mad, I don't know.

Why did you have to go remind me of Aliasse and then by extension the rest of VC2's poor main character lineup? The Avan laugh is rocking through my head and it's not good.

...Huh, I don't think I've ever been weirded out by Lilith. Not even after seeing this (totally nsfw btw) Bengus art. That never registered as 'creepy' to me, or even 'lol hawt', just racy. I don't know why that is, but I don't think I'll be putting much thought into it anytime soon.

I don't dislike all types of sexuality in video games. I'm a woman. I have boobs. Embracing your sexuality is fine. That's just part of human nature.

But when it comes to games, the questions are:
- How much is too much without it feeling tacky?
- Maybe it's not okay that some characters are certain ages but they push the envelope too much.
- She looks like she's ____, but she's really thousands of years old is a stupid excuse.
- Having a fanservice character there for the sake of fanservice
- Making your entire game like that is incredibly offputting. There is really nothing wrong with putting boobs in your games. Women have them in all sizes, so it's unavoidable. But using them as your focal point and selling point is pretty absurd.
- How will fanbases make this become your IP's focal point through discussion and doujin materials, and thus you end up factoring that in for the next game in the project?

A manga artist, whose manga I read when I was younger (ex: Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato), had said a while ago, "We owe a great deal to maniacs, but we can't make good works if we only pander to them." Making many games focus on that aspect ends up making it feel so homogenous that it gets difficult to not generalize.

I don't necessarily think stuff like Dragon's Crown or the big-breasted characters in 999/VLR are a super-huge problem, despite all of them exhibiting that trope. But that's just my opinion and other women aren't going to feel that way. Bayonetta is basically sexuality to the max with a dash of empowerment, and it works in the context of the game. It's not super-tasteful, but it works within the context and makes sense (like Village said, it's like a Trish/Catwoman/Wonder Woman sort of thing).

Dragon's Crown's character designs seem to go back to older fantasy designs. As I look at some of the DragonLance book covers on the shelf behind me, some of the females do look like that. While I don't condone it, I get the idea behind the character design. It's just like the male character designs in that game being all buff and stuff.

Making it a focus in your game, which isn't an adult ero/hentai game, and maybe even coupling it with iffy chronophilia, is the thing that becomes incredibly offputting. These 'touch the girl' games, especially. Especially if the characters in the game behave as though they are in a lower age-group than the age-group they are chronologically listed as. It makes me feel very uncomfortable, especially when trying to discuss a game, but much of the discussion is centred around the fanservice instead (sometimes towards characters who aren't of-age). I've played some RPGs that are directed towards adult audiences on PC before (some of which had decent mechanics which was my draw to them), so I just wonder why they don't bother just outright making an eroge instead of beating around the bush (outside of the obvious "it probably won't sell as much").

I just feel like it's a huge bummer. You have stuff like Little Battlers Experience, Dragon Quest games, Fantasy Life Link, but those aren't localized. But then looking at the Japanese release lists, a lot of the games seem to have less-than-savoury stuff. Especially on handhelds. Really weird. I guess it's just a selling point now, after Love Plus's success last generation.

Sorry for derailing the thread. I've been down about this since yesterday and even my taichi/boxing/muay thai class last night didn't help.

Lilith's design makes sense considering her mythology. Not really creepy to me.

Pretty much what I meant to say (I really should work on my English skills but I can't do much more than this atm).
I think it's because there's not much money to be made on PC and because of touch screens that we have these games on 3DS and Vita. Bullet Girls might take the crown, the gameplay looks dull as hell and the eroge part seems like some flash game I played when I was 14.
It's funny that Love Plus didn't even make it to the West. I know nothing about the game, but it looks more like a dating sim than an erotic game.

i don't know what's going on with square enix. maybe they don't feel like the effort is worth it (but then they'll bring over drakengard 3, leaving me confused).

with regards to level-5, i get the feeling they don't see themselves as a video game company, but as a multimedia entertainment company. less like square enix and more like bandai namco. and unlike the latter, they want to have total ownership over what they do. so i guess if something of theirs doesn't look like it will make it big, then they won't bother entertaining the idea. it's probably why they team up with bigger companies like namco and sony and nintendo for western publishing deals instead of the niche western ones- because maybe they feel that the niche publishers have certain stigma that would supersede any other impression of the game.

in addition to that, aksys, xseed, atlus, and nis america are all battling for what is generally the same crowd- with each having their own sugar daddies of sort (arc system works with aksys, marvelous with xseed, sega/atlus japan for atlus, and nis for nis america). but outside of these, everything is up for grabs. and now idea factory is trying to establish themselves out in the west too- which makes the slices of pie smaller for all parties involved. that means there's a lot of looking at everything, even if it may not be very good, because the licensing might be inexpensive and the overhead during localization might be too. it's really about return on investment- to the point where even a mere 50k sold to retailers is a resounding success.

the other thing to consider is that the kind of work may not even be beneficial to a company like nis america or xseed. perhaps square enix would be interested in bringing dragon quest over, if they didn't do the localization themselves, but it's likely they would not be comfortable with xseed's logo on the box. so the work would essentially be contractual, and then xseed would only get a lump sum that may not be worth the effort in doing the localization when they could be making money bringing games over they could publish instead.

I mean yeah, it basically comes down to if you're "smart" about it. It's really easy to notice when a character is blatantly hypersexualized.
It's also why I tend to disagree with the sentiment that Samus is becoming more and more sexualized. She's been a shapely woman from the series' beginning. Sure, the Zero Suit draws more attention to her figure, but I'd think its less sexual than the bikini she romped around in with Metroid 1. Her armor is cut differently now however, but I think its to reduce its clunky, bulkiness.

Schala, the dude you're looking for is Leiji Matsumoto.

So yea, I just moved from Texas back to Pennsylvania and got myself this fancy new laptop for games n' stuffs; I can now redeem the dozen Steam codes I have laying around in my PMs! Had to leave my PS3 behind but my brother should be sending it next week so I might still be up for the Unleashed race.

TLDR: Who the fuck buys these games, just masturbate.

I can agree with this, but only on a series-by-series basis.

I love Dragon's Crown because no one else has made a hardcore D&D-styled beat'em up in decades. I still pop the game in from time to time just to play a few levels 'cause of how fun it is.

I'm gonna lump in Lollipop Chainsaw, Bayonetta and Drakengard 3 because, while suggestive, there's absolutely no explicit content of the sorts that Bullet Girls and games like Monster Monpiece sport. They feature actual protagonists that are confident in their sexuality, which I don't see a problem with. There's certainly room for games like that in the industry.

Senran Kagura is a funny case. Shinovi Versus, the upcoming Vita game, is pretty much hailed by most of the series' fans as having way better gameplay than the first game. It's also way racier than the first game. I really don't mind a game that justify being racy by also being a good game.

I'm with you on how Neptunia grew so popular in the west though. The first game is unsalvageably awful (this coming from someone who got the platinum for it). I never tried MK2, but Schala has told me that it actually plays like a decent video game. If the series had started with MK2, I'd definitely understand that series' success better.

Samus has always been shapely, that's whatever. What gets me a bit though is the need to have the Zero Suit in all of her appearances since they came up with it, specially after how awful it was used in Other M.

its also really funny to me that they gave her high heels after the zero suit's original design doc specifically called for them not to do that

Huh, I didn't know about the no heels thing, interesting. About the Zero Suit though, it seems to me that the situations in which she's wearing it are mostly called for. Like when the power suit is destroyed, or when she completes missions, etc.

Other M broke a lot of "rules", so I'm not surprised that it also used the ZS inappropriately.

Man I loved Valkyria Chronicles 1, it was the first game I got for my PS3 and is still probably up there as one of my favourite games on that system, but I never got far enough in VC2 to even see that character. It was such a bummer finally playing that game when I got a Vita.

that puzzling face
I think VC2 started too slow. You're essentially stuck in the academy doing 'training' (lol) for upwards of 200 hours before you even get to the meat of the game.

Compare that to the premise of VC where you essentially start off with a do-or-die situation with a much more interesting cast than "hey these guys happen to be in your squad! Konnichiwa!"

edit:
TLDR: Who the fuck buys these games, just masturbate.

You know the kicker? Monster Monpiece is a legit good game underneath all that. Like probably the best card game I've played this gen.

A game with SOLID gameplay. From Compile Heart. Let the hilarity of that sink in for a moment.

The bummer is that multiplayer is pretty much a ghost town and/or you kind of second guess what kind of person you're playing against. Just because.

Pretty sure Virtua Fighter 2 was a great port according to a lot of folks. People seemed to like Sonic the Fighters' online for the price it was. It's just like me going, "why does FF4 keep getting ported when that game sucks", when in reality a lot of people like it. People have different opinions.
It's a Sonic Fighting game. As a kid finding out this game existed thru an Arcade blew my mind. Besides it's fun to mess around in =3
...you guys.

Yesterday, I found out that my favourite developer from childhood and adolescence--or at least ex-members of that development team who made a spiritual successor to one of the dev's more popular trilogies--is developing Bullet Girls. Quintet was my favourite developer when I was younger. Their games had a profound impact on stuff I actually looked up myself. Illusion of Gaia piqued my interest in world structures and geography and history. It's legitimately the reason why if I hear about something and it interests me enough, I will go out and look stuff up about it. While I'm not a geography/history person (unless you count historical linguistics on my part since I majored in linguistics and neuroscience in undergrad), it's because of the Soul Blazer trilogy that I look that shit up. It's just like how Suikoden sparked my interest in social justice, and that series is just a shell of what it used to be (with the PSP game confirming that to me when I'd played it two years ago). Or my disappointment that Phantasy Star doesn't seem to be pursuing the same interests as the first four games in the series.

ActRaiser is the reason why I like townbuilding and simulators. While the platforming is stiff as fuck, the little stories that it contains, and the overarching narrative feels pretty ambitious. You play as God, and you need to fight Satan, and towards the end, your people abandon you because they become their own masters. Through townbuilding, you end up having a slight emotional connection to your people, so the ending could be bittersweet for the player. ActRaiser 2, at least the Japanese version, is a love letter to Christian fiction (ex: the Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, etc), but the English version got so butchered that it just becomes a mere action game.

Quintet's narratives could have some sort of depth and make you ask questions. I wrote a lot about how the Soul Blazer Trilogy made me feel in my Essential RPGs post. Even the spiritual successor to that trilogy developed by Shade (comprised of former Quintet members), The Granstream Saga, had great combat with some good narrative ideas. So... it's just a shame that they went from profound storytelling to... that garbage.
Shit that sucks...

I don't necessarily feel like part of my youth died, but I am so, so disappointed. I keep trying to tell myself that it's probably new staff who don't have that pedigree from Quintet, but man that's not working well.

All I can do is pop Dragon Quest 7 3DS in, but at the same time, I'm starting to realize that games are shifting in a direction that I probably don't care for.

Honestly, it's what I've been suspecting for a few years now: The Otaku have inherited the Japanese Gaming Industry. It might be an extreme way of saying it, but I am sick of all these loliwhores and moesluts and all this meaningless 'fanservice' in Japanese games that cover up what would actually be good gameplay.

On the plus side, that Super Robot Girls anime doesn't seem to be too popular (Go Nagai mecha re-imagined as generic animu moesluts and loliwhores, and I grew up on Mazinger Z, so you can guess how I reacted to that)

One thing I'll add is that you got me interested in the games you mentioned, so I hope to play them someday @_@

I do hope though that Akiba's Trip will handle the satire of generic anime tropes well.

Well, because quality doesn't matter. They can shit it out on a shoestring budget and people will buy it for $60 because bewbs.

I'm still sad for Trails in the Sky.

Far as Trails go, apparently XSEED only have one person working on the PC port. I can get Low costs, but come on, that must be too much for one person to do on their own >_>;

I'm playing Dragon's Crown right now on my PSVita and I don't really like some things. Maybe it's not my kind of game, or maybe it's because I chose the warrior :p
Lollipop Chainsaw is a bland action game, nothing extraordinary, but at least it didn't get praised and surely didn't sell that well. It could've worked the same way without the female protagonist (poorly).
It gets some praise on GAF and has sold over 1 million copies IIRC.
I like Lollipop Chainsaw mainly for the Suda51 acid and liked that Twilight Sparkles is Juliet.
...and come on man SPARKLE HUNTING!

You know this reminds me. I don't really play Darkstalkers 3 too much just because of lilith I don't mind the other female Darkstalkers except her.

Uh I kinda don't care about Lillith, I mean I GET the idea behind the character but it never bothered me mainly because I didn't like how she played lol.
I mainly just rock Demitri and Sasquatch in it. I'd pick Jedah if the guy wasn't so hard to properly use.

You know the kicker? Monster Monpiece is a legit good game underneath all that. Like probably the best card game I've played this gen.

That's sad to hear, if the game didn't have that BS I would've gotten it. Why Japanese gaming companies think they need moesluts, loliwhores and all this sexual pandering in their games is beyond me.

I actually never seen a single screen for Monster Monpiece. Will do a little research when I get back home! I'd be super creeped by playing online against someone with this game. I wonder what people thinks of me when I choose Chun-Li or Kasumi :(

I actually enjoyed it while it lasted, but it was nothing memorable. Like most of Suda games unluckily.. (I still have to finish NMH2 and play KiD)

I just remembered I liked Super Robot Wars OG Saga. It had fanservice EVERYWHERE but the combat system was so fun to me. But yeah, tits everywhere.

Rikkun, grab the PC ver. of Killer is Dead, follow the simple fix for 60 FPS and bask at the most visually impressive game of last year. COmbat in it is simple but fun, it's main highlight being the Dodge Counter, it's just freakin' satisfying.

Oh my Pizza, the Last Guardian debacle.

It's a shame I won't be able to watch Sony's E3 show since I'd be asleep by then since I gotta go to work (Stupid America time), because the metldown that'd occur whether the game gets announced or not will be a joy to watch.

Gonna have to settle with watching MS' then going to bed =/

Is Sony's conference way later this year? I remember watching it live last year, but fuck staying up until 2 am to watch something that will probably last for two hours.
I will probably watch it anyway

Sony's conference will start at like 6 AM over here. I'd be asleep by then yeesh.

Gonna ask a friend if we can both hang out and get some lulz from E3 and the GAF/internet meltdowns. We'd watch the MS and EA (starts at 8:30 PM for me) at best though before I need to go to bed.

Other than that I need to install an mIRC client and figure out how to use Steam chat on my iphone.

Hmm searching online but would like to know: what's a good IRC client that I can use on an iPhone (iOS) that'll work with the chat link in the OP?

I actually never seen a single screen for Monster Monpiece. Will do a little research when I get back home! I'd be super creeped by playing online against someone with this game. I wonder what people thinks of me when I choose Chun-Li or Kasumi

who knows. Honestly, out of all the fanservicey fighting game characters, Chun li is probably the least offense that i know of.

No, an honest-to-God voice chat. Although Skype does supply text chat, for those without mics to still interact with those who do.
I might have to do that if I'm able to be on. You guys would just hear the VRRRRRR WHMMMMMMM of my equipment. My workplace is loud.

Sonic Boom is Sega of America's baby. They are going to be doing everything to make sure it can stand apart and has room to breathe. They aren't going to let Sonic 2015 steal its thunder here.

The best you can hope for is Tokyo Game Show in September. Sega of America might control the message here, but at TGS, Sega of Japan is calling the shots.

On the topic of Sonic Boom, GameXplain's recent impressions video of the 3DS version has stated that the soundtrack for that version is being done by actual Sonic composers; do we know if they're doing the music for the WiiU version?

Either way, the 3DS version is looking better and better.

Man, Nintendo's not getting lucky with their Sega deal, at least quality wise. First Lost World turns out to be a stinker, and now Boom looks to be following it.

I never inquired about Sochi Olympics though.

Signs you are getting too obsessed with Freedom Planet: you are Googling occurrences of its name within the past week, then going into 4chan archives just to see what they had to say. (Some genuine interest, particularly with a couple of WebMs, but also your typical 4chan "you're idiots paying $10 for a ROM hack" and "Sonic games and furries, sounds like autism central".)

I never inquired about Sochi Olympics though.
It neither reviewed nor sold that well.

Apparently Nintendo had some input with the development of Lost World, so that may (or may not, depending on how much they put into it) bode well for the next mainline Sonic game not using it's playstyle, as I doubt Nintendo would let SEGA use something they had put any effort of theirs into and put it on another system.

This would be the best news you can give me about the next Sonic game.

Not at all like Sonic LW.
Yes please.

Lost World's greatest strength is it's control system, which they finally got right at the cost of a teensy learning curve. People just complain because it the game explained itself poorly through questionable level design.

The next game should be LW style, not Uncolorations. Just fix the level design (and lack of tutorial nonsense) and you're golden.

God, Sonic Boom looks like a huge mess from 2005. Good lord.

That is far from my complaints about the game aside from the level design and lack of cohesiveness, but we've been over and over this before in this thread and in the OT. It's one of those Sonic games I don't think I'll be going back to due to lack of interest.

ur going to take Sonic Boom and ur gonna like it, breh.

Just because the game is for kids doesn't mean it has to be a middling average sort of affair. Lost World seems to play and have better level design than that. Framerate and camera makes me nauseous in the video, too. As I said, 3D platformers from that era and I didn't jive too well, so why should this one be different?

So hi. Let's talk about the gameplay. A fraction of the game is essentially a button masher a la Unleashed's night time stages with a lasso from Metroid where enemies take several hits to go down is really weird and quite offputting. I never liked bashing into enemies since Sonic Adventure and up to Unleashed. It's slow. It's a waste of the player's time in this type of platformer. I don't want slow, but I don't want super-speed racer fast either. Racing games fuck with my motion sickness too, and I always felt like the Uncolourations games were a happy medium. Things are constantly happening, you're doing stuff, but you're not fighting enemies that take several hits for you to get through unless it's a boss.

Some of the writing in those lines are okay. Others are questionable and adding memes that aren't going to be popular (heck some of those aren't even in common use anymore) feels like a misstep. Kids aren't stupid. They use the Internet all the time, so they know what's hot and what's not in terms of a lexicon. But god, I hate things that yammer into my ear constantly. I hated it in Lightning Returns. I don't like it here. That's just grating.

I thought we'd gotten away from this sort of thing by now, but I guess I was wrong. Like Coldman said, kids deserve better than that. Using that as an argument feels like such a cop-out. When you were kids, you had better stuff to play back then too. Sonic included. If Sonic Boom were in development for three years, why does it look and sound like that now?

Either the music was too low volume or it was so generic that I even forgot it existed.

At least one good thing out of Sonic Boom will be coming out this week.
