My beef with the episode is that there wasn't really enough dramatic tension for a character of his standing's exit. It was pretty obvious as soon as Pope laid down the rules who it was going to be. All that Gemma stuff was a pretty big distraction too and overall meant what should have been a great episode was distinctly average.

HOWEVER, this does set up the rest of the season nicely for Jax so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. I really hope the rest of the season is better balanced though and focuses on the MC more than the family side of things. I'm kind of worried Joel McHale's character will be another distraction from the main arc though.

I had a feeling that was going down but my heart was still racing during the scene's buildup. Can't remember the last time a television show got me wound up like that.

The Shield (grenade).
The Wire (liquor store).
Spartacus (the 'exhibition' match).

If you watch them, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Opie was different. I'm with the AV Club (and some of the posters here) on this one - something was missing. It's not that it felt contrived, more like unnecessary. There have been so many times where killing off a brother would make sense on SoA, but this death felt like ticking the easiest box they could to get the biggest immediate reaction.

Ahhh it became obvious like midway through that Ope was gonna get it, but it's weird, I'm not as emotionally affected as I thought I'd be.

Good episode though. I like Jax when he is in fucking serious business mode.

Some asshole spoiled last night's episode for me. People who tweet spoilers openly should be hung and quartered. All he had to do was say "I can't believe they killed him!" but noooo...

dave is ok

aztek is ok
My little sister texted me to spoil it. She doesn't even watch SOA, she just saw Facebook and thought someone else named Opie died and asked if I knew him.

Missed the 1st 15 minutes or so last night, but when I got to the end of the episode, the preview, and the start of the replay, I realized...I missed a week. Was that episode 2?

Last night was episode 3. They ran it twice in a row yesterday evening, like usual.

:lol :/

I figured they did a quick bit of them going to prison for Tigs driveby, but I started questioning why Smits showed up out of nowhere, then HP at the end.

Passable episode, but I wasn't really very emotional over the death either, even though Opie was probably my favorite character.

It figures it would be Ope, since all the show ever did was shit on him the whole time. Oh well, I guess this frees up more time for Gemma/Tara to have the umpteenth version of the same damn fight.

Yawn.

what does Jax tell Tig at the end? my dvr cut off after he talks to Chibbs

also, gemma needs to go..

yeah seriously, ivysaur you're kinda being the "i know something you dont know" type in this thread

i was basically just waiting to see who was gonna die, although it was obvious about a quarter of the way through

It was a really well-written episode that I thought people would enjoy. The EW leak about the death was unfortunate, but that's an FX/Kurt thing.

Did it lessen the impact about the death? Sure. Is it a bit frustrating that after months of secrecy an EW article pops up that someone would die? Yeah, definitely. But it was all over Kurt's twitter by then. They wanted to get the fans to see the episode (and get the ratings). So, yeah. While I don't think it was the best decision towards an impact to his death, I completely understand why he did it. I was trying to remain as cryptic as possible. I believe the only thing I said before the EW leak was that this is a great episode that alleviates a lot of the issues reviewers had with the show.

(and no, I don't think the show is perfect and I think most of the criticisms about the show spinning wheels is valid. But 503 is a really well done, well shot episode)

I understand why he did it with all the new shows starting but I really would've loved not going into it knowing someone was going to die. Phenomenal episode though...my favorite since the Season 3 finale. I definitely think Clay ratted out the brothel

Sure. But I don't have any say whether they want to curb a ratings decline by announcing a character death. And Kurt had already said on twitter months prior that 503 was a game changer. It is what it is.

That was a heavy episode but honestly with the vague hints in this thread leading up to the episode I already expected it. Still a shame to see him go but now this should shake things up within the club.

I'll have to watch the show again but the conversation Jax had with Pope about letting Tig go free with the rest of the Sons. I know Pope told Jax he wants 50% of what he earns running guns, but he also wants Tig after a certain time? I wasn't too clear on that.

And somebody seriously put a bullet in Clay's head please. His little "victim/sad sap" shtick is getting old with me, lol. He has to have been the one who ratted out Nero's place. I doubt the girl who Gemma beat down was the one who did it.

My recollection of it: Pope said he wanted Tig to remain in jail indefinitely so he knew where he was and could mess with him, but Jax negotiated Tig's release at the end to use him for a while (e.g. the request about voting) and Jax said he would later give him back to Pope.

Thanks. I thought that's what I heard. I think Sons is the only show I can think of where I sometimes have trouble listening to dialogue. Don't know if it's the way the sound is mixed or what.

I remember similar situations during season 3 in Ireland. Some of the dialogue seemed tough to listen to.

I can't be the only one that wanted to throw up after Opie's death scene.

I was sick to my stomach.

I got so damned angry at that guard.

This story is turning more and more out like Hamlet.

EDIT****

Hamlet - Jax
Claudius - Clay
Gertrude - Gemma
Hamlet's father - J.T. with his letters and notebook providing the role of the ghost
Polonius - Mostly Piney, with Unser and Bobby also playing some of his part
Ophelia - Donna
Laertes - Opie most of the time
Horatio - we'll see who's left to tell the tale
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern - Tig, Chibs, Juice, various other sons at different times

This is fucking great. Now I have to change my avatar.

Man I want to put a bullet in popes ugly little fucking head.

I guess everyone can stop complaining that Sutter is to afraid to kill off main characters now. Although after Piney/Sack (Yeah I considered Sack a main) I got the message.

I feel really bad having this avatar now , fuck fuck.

It's not the sound quality it's the fact that they speak like you would in real life I think. Like words are not always completed in whole, and sometimes not said loud enough like most TV shows. I find watching SoA with subtitles is the way to go sometimes.

Ok got my new Opie avatar. Fuck you Tig, I cannot support you anymore.

Also thanks to the awesome guys in Avatar request thread for making this for me. Toppot you are truly a G.

Hopefully Opie's death will have meaning for the characters/show. Like
Terry and Lem
in The Shield. Those weren't forgotten, but instead pushed the narrative and intensity forward.

I like that you couldn't tell if Jax was serious about giving Tig over when he's done with him. I'm betting that he was bluffing and and is really going to try and find a way to kill Pope first. But it's hard to tell when he is in that zone.

I don't think Jax will give up Tig like that. But, I do think Jax will punish him in other ways.

No. I think Jax can give two shits about Trig at this point. This domino effect of death and destruction all because of a lie started by Clay. He needs to be next on the chopping block. I hope they don't pass over the execution of that correctional officer.

Thought the same thing.

When Tara said that her husband might kill Gema when she asked her if Tara was going to kill her, did she imply that she knows that Gemma had something to do with JT's death?

That's what I took from it. I think she is the only one, besides unser and piney, to see all the letters before Gemma took out some pages.
