Don't panic.

That's the message from Sony, which Tuesday confirmed what a growing number of holiday shoppers and eBay bargainers already knew--the company's PlayStation 2 video game console is in short supply at many retailers.

But the company said it's ramping up production and doing all it can to get more consoles in stores quickly. "Consumer demand for the new PlayStation 2 has exceeded our expectations, and we are doing all we can to fulfill the wish lists of people who want a new PlayStation 2 unit under their tree this holiday season," a representative of Sony Computer Entertainment America said.

The shortage stems from the new slimmed-down PS2 design Sony announced earlier this year. Sony has been clearing out supplies of the original PS2 configuration for the past few months, and the company has been unable to push units of the new design into the market fast enough to meet holiday demand.

The extent of the shortages was difficult to gauge, but the trusty old eBay-meter indicated mild shopping alarm. New PS2 consoles in the revamped design, nicknamed "PS2 Slim," were selling for as much as $230 on Tuesday, well above the $150 list price.

Availability was spotty among major online retailers. Amazon.com showed "PS2 Slim" units available only from Amazon Marketplace affiliates, who were charging as much as $350. CompUSA had units available only for in-store pick-up, with none in stock at San Francisco Bay Area or Manhattan stores. Specialty retailers GameStop and EB Games both showed all "PS2 Slim" packages as back-ordered.

Shortages appeared to be most acute in Europe, where London newspapers reported some desperate shoppers were paying the equivalent of $750 (400 pounds) for a new PS2. "Everywhere I try seems to be out of stock," "Bill C." wrote in a posting on a Usenet group for British bargain-hunters. "The standard response seems to be, 'Sorry, there is a national shortage; should be in by Christmas though.'"

Analyst P.J. McNealy said the shortage could be a boon for competitor Microsoft, if Sony can't restock shelves before shoppers get really impatient. "We believe that Microsoft...continues to benefit from Sony shortages with Xbox console sales," he wrote in a report published Tuesday.

Who actually doesn't have a ps2 by now? that thing is pretty amazing sales wise.

Maybe the people who bought early the ps2 models...

Xbox is pretty much sold out everywhere as well. /

Not at the Best Buys in my neck of the woods. The one nearest me has a stack of about 70(there were more before Black Friday). Targets and Circuit City's are out though.

Geez. Here (in Canada) I see bucketloads of PSTwos and Xboxes in every store I visit.

Maybe I should start some e-z money ebay holiday business?

Sony must be retarded, but little mishaps like this are what leads to a shift in momentum for the competitor.

Very true. We've been out of PS2s for a month now. Its sold out everywhere. People have to place £50 deposit to make sure they get their PS2 before Xmas.

Same with Xbox, but nowhere near as much demand. Its sold out, but i dont get customers asking me every second "Do you have Xbox's in stock?"

Must be a geographic thing :P

i remember when i told them sony sent us 8 for black friday.

Their both sold out here. Just check what new systems are fetching on eBay if you want to get an idea of how shortages are going.

This calls for sales charts!

Did a little research on eBay while I was checking a couple of games....

PSTwo is selling for way over retail, +50 dollars.

Xbox is going for retail or slightly over. Limited Halo Boxes are going for 300 bucks!!! Damn, I should sell mine!

Nintendo DS is going for slightly over retail +20 or so.

Gamecube is going for less than retail, and almost always feature a bunch of games with the system to sweeten the deal.

So...it matches the "sales" charts haha.

I think a 50 dollar price increase for a ps2 is significant.

It was pretty weird going into Best Buy right after it opened on Black Friday and seeing...

100 Xboxes
50 Gamecubes
240 Atari Flashbacks(most of those are still there by the way)
0 PS2s

Yeah, same here. They are very easily found on storeshelves across the GTA.

I just saw a pallet of PSTwos at my local Costco (in SoCal) - bundled with an extra controller, a memcard, and Jak 2 and GT3, for $220, I think.

Wow, great deal. Not the games I want, but for people who have yet to buy the damn system, it's great.

IBTN

ive been looking for one for the past week or so. every store i called said they got in small shipments last week and they all sold out within hours. the best Buy website has been saying that ps2's are sold out for the past 2 weeks now.

i called a BB today and asked if they had any ps2's in stock. the answer was "no, but we do have xbox's in stock". did i ask for a fucking xbox? :p

i have been considering spending the cash on an xbox to replace to replace my old xbox which gave out a month or so ago, but im trying to be patient.

marketing hype my ass. sony is missing out on some sales here.

I work at a EB in FL and same thing with us. No Xbox, PS2 or DS left. Hell we didn't even get enough DS's to fill all our pre-orders. Got a suprise shipment of PS2s but those sold out quickly. And of course we haven't been given word on when we'll receive anymore.

My Best Buy had a crap load as well although you could see that Black Friday was good for it because the mountain they made looked pretty messed up. The local gamestores, target, & TRU also had plenty.

Microsoft seems to have rectified their problems and stands to profit from Sony's misfortune.

we took a conference call at work yesterday, and they basically told us they have no idea when we'll get more ps2's.

sony is seriously dropping the ball here.

friend of mine at gamecrazy is PISSED cause his revenue is down due to not having any ps2's. says he gets about 25 calls a day about it.

To all PAL 'PSTwo' owners, does the PSTwo still have that silly Green filter when watching DVDs via the RGB SCART cable?

If these were bought retail There's not exactly ALOT of profit in those sales...

Retail is $150
Listing fee is about what $2.50
Final auction fees are about $6.13
Can't tell where seller lives to take a crack at sales tax....
