Sony is aiming to have the biggest transition. Price and launch games have a Lot to do with It.

After the teardown, if it is going to happen at all, I will be ready to know the price, I just want to see the damn thing being turned on and run some games.
Since Covid wont let us try the console at events, we just need a complete digital event where they show all this with final hardware and software.

unless they have a serious plan for it I doubt it, the economy is just not there at the moment.

This kind of statement reminds me of the leaked plans MS had to sell about 1 Billion xbox ones (now they say they don't care anymore).

That wasn't Microsoft though. The reason why retailers would discount it so much us because they want to get rid of stock.

Aka it wasn't selling well.

Otherwise they would keep it at MSRP if its selling well.
Nope.

It was aka "Microsoft has a Lockhart ready and they need to get rid of Xbox One X before it will launch"

The Xbox One X launched several years ago if I'm not mistaken. The user is saying that the One X was heavily discounted even before Lockhart was a thing.

I mean I know why Microsoft stopped making the X but the X wasn't heavily discounted this whole time because of Lockhart. Maybe recently but certainly not since it came out.

This is the real masterplan

PS5DE -399
PS5 - 449-499

Spiderman, Demons Souls and mystery big third party exclusive or timed exclusive on console launch.

Make sure You are emotionally strong for the Future announcments.
Don't be a fool.

PS5DE 449
PS5 499

I think it's impossible to see them getting a lower price. I think it's more likely to see PS5DE 499 and PS5 549 (or more expensive) than to see them for a lower price than the one I posted.

Spiderman (if not delayed) as launch game if not delayed due to covid. Godfall the only AAA PS5 3rd party exclusive, Deathloop for 2021. Demons Souls 2021 if not delayed due to covid.

A lot of you keep missing the point that launch is always supply constrained, even if they're manufacturing the spurious '10m' for the launch months, that will sell out WW immediately.

Given this fact, and MS' comparatively awful launch line-up, what sense is there to release at just $399 for the DE? They'll sell the same mumbers whether the price is $399 or $480 in the launch months.

So you think it's going to be any different this gen? I mean, I'm not saying it will be to the same degree, and I'm sure they're not going to be as defeatest over there as MS but let's be real.

Success in this generation would be not losing 2:1 and/or selling more than 30 million less than your only successful console.

Yes because Microsoft has the Xbox Series S as their budget system. They don't care which one you buy so the S will he used to push sales if needed.

@Somnium You laugh but a 50 dollar difference won't make or break peoples decision. 100 dollars is a big deal.
It was smart to release both. A good 4K Player can be $180+, I don't know why people think it's cheap. If they can cut the cost of $50 - $100 of the disk version, it'll sell well for sure.

Wasn't there a scene in the deep dive when the shape of the frame around some information spelled out "treefiddy"?

If it was sub-$499 they would have been shouting it from rooftops. There is a negative buzz surrounding pricing right now but for some reason neither has come out to denounce high price rumors. Why is that?

Every day without a price reveal or even discussion about pricing I am more comfortable in my assumption that console prices will be high this gen.

The PS5 will be the first $699 console from Sony. The PS5DE will be $599. When they talk about having the biggest console transition, that means simply they plan to drop PS4 support much faster than they've dropped console support in the past. The PS1, 2 and 3 all received support, often years after the new console launched. This time they aim to cut off the PS4 more quickly which will give people no other option than upgrading to the new console.

The XSX will be $599 and the XSS will be $299. A $599 version will also be available with a second 1TB HDD included and the image of Craig etched onto the front face of the console.

I think Microsoft are in a better position at the moment knowing they have the most powerful console and just waiting to undercut the price.they will announce the price later than sony

since i can't even get a 1080 on that price i doubt it, but man, it would be cool.
I expect it to be from 499-550 USD.

Mass early adoption isn't going to happen at 499+ in the economy the world is in. PS5 DE has to be 399 for this to be taken seriously and I believe it's coming.

Isn't it more logical that Sony didn't announce the prices, because they don't want to be first who will tell a public "hey guys...remember that great 399$ console last gen. Yeah, this gen won't be that cheap"?

Honestly I believe they are willing to take a loss on the console the first year or two, say they are willing to do a loss of $100 (just a random figure as an example) with a $399/499 price tag for DE/Normal, but they are still a business if they can get away with a higher price than they rather do that. And that all depends on the price of the XSS/XSX.
If the XSX is $599, then Sony can match them without a loss or go for a $50 loss and sell it at $549 and still be cheaper than Xbox. Same with XSS and the DE version, all depends on what Xbox will price the XSS at.

And MS is probably trying to do the same thing, hence this waiting and waiting....

Almost 100% of gamers I know have said months / even year(s) ago that they will get PS5, so they dont have to do much of marketing for audience like this.

I guess most wont even care about the price, unless it is really high like 699€.

So sony have their loyal customers that like their ecosystem, and that pulls more new customers in like a magnet.

All Sony gotta do is show off a spiderman gameplay clip and the entire world will be licking their lips like a drunk in a titty bar. Sony has all the momentum and hype to themselves

Microsoft would trade position with Sony in a heartbeat. I see a lot of people that are convinced that Microsoft is in a better position to wait Sony out on pricing and yet will be launching a week or two before the PS5. Sony is dominating the current generation and people will be willing to wait for them. MS better be careful because if Sony does go first many will decide and preorder immediately. If I was in MS shoes I would announce a price I know Sony can't match and try to get those first impulse preorders.

Im still thinking
1) both consoles delayed until next year
or
2) extremely limited launch by territory all the way up until mid next year

many countries are still balls deep in COVID and it's economic effects so releasing an expensive console while some places can't afford it or risk getting COVID trying to purchase one seems silly

people need to prepare themselves for the Announcements

Yes but regardless sony will get the preorders but if microsoft wait and undercut them which i think they will do then they will shift a lot of consoles. Nobody is arguing that sony will sell more consoles but Microsoft can close the gap

Just thinking about that Playstation exec quote about having the "best launch lineup ever" with the PS5 and realized we haven't
seen these game franchises in a pretty long time:

Killzone, Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, Toshinden, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal and Syphon Filter

I wonder if one or perhaps a few of these make an appearance shortly on the PS5? It's long overdue!

Where is this $599 Xbox Series X price point coming from? M.S. would be idiots launching at that price. I don't see it happening.
It's based on that Hot Chips presentation, where it was said, that X1X silicon cost was "$+" and XSS is "$++" and X1X was 499USD if I am not mistaken...

So PS5 launch lineup for big games looks like,
Demon Souls Re
Spiderman the Lost Legacy
Ratchet & Clank ?
Resogun : Returnal

And with other big/small/third party games I'd say for first year the lineup is ok.

Killzone, Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, Toshinden, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal and Syphon Filter
I doubt any of these games will ever come back. Even Killzone. Sony just not interested in FPS when they can fill that gap with stuffing money down Activision pockets for exclusive content.
Maybe Sly or Syphon as AA projects.

We also know from the figures Sony released that with the PS4 they made a LOT more revenue from year 1 PS4 owners over people who picked it up later. I don't have the figures handy, but I'm sure someone could find them.

From the Sony IR day in May 2019...
https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/irday/pdf/2019/presen_E.pdf
Page 17

An average PS4 generated $700, but a launch PS4 generated $1600... Until May last year, so it is probably more by now.

With the PS5 even more money will go to digital sales and subscriptions, so I am quite confident that Sony has some interest in giving us a good price, even if it means some subsidizing for a few months :messenger_grinning:

There we go, thanks.

The early adopters are the hardcore ps fans that will buy tons of games, accessories plus subscription.

399-449 will still bring profits and after a few months they will begin profiting on the hardware too.

Better to have 10 millions sales quickly and happy fans. It will snowball and the reduced profit will mean nothing in the long run.

Do it.

I'm preparing for $499/$599 as the Pro is still $399. If the Pro was going to receive a price drop in a few months wouldn't we be seeing it on sale now?

I want to agree with you OP, I really do, but I don't think the launch lineup or price matters at all. I'm buying one day one regardless of those two factors and I think many feel the same way. This gen has been amazing, but baby it's over and for me it's Cyberpunk and Spider-Man on new shiny hardware or bust.
I expect Pro to be phased out like 1X was. However I expect any price change to be in sync with the PS5 price reveal.

Basically, reveal PS5 price, reveal PS4 Superslim price (i predict $199), PS4 pro production announced to have ceased and remaining stock gotten rid of at bargain prices. Sony might be delaying the price announcement to wait until all the old stock are sold through.

Destruction allstars fills that void for twisted metal. And it's exclusive. But I would love a new one. Rumors of bend studio might be they reboot syphon filter since days gone sold well. They expanded last year possibly 2 teams. Something IV heard Sony is trying to setup on a lot of their studios over the past gen. Is to have 2 project teams.

Instead of buying tons of studios they would rather expand existing ones. Like some people that make up new San Diego studio are from other internal Sony studios.

Guys who made warhawk are no more. Honestly if SOCOM rumor is true over at GG. Then it's going to be a while until they return to that franchise if ever.

SOCOM is probably proving ground for GG to make a more focused multiplayer killzone.

I think as an IP it needs a reboot and re-imaging.

Maybe they get a small team after horizon 2 to make a killzone VR similar to half life alyx.

But I can tell you with confidence Japan studio will be In the spotlight soon.

They have been helping out a lot with other projects. And their time to shine project wise will be possibly shown soon. Unless covid halted progress.

My point wasn't directly about console sales numbers. I believe Sony has more waiting time if they choose than Microsoft based on release date rumors and current conditions. Most rumors put the PS5 launching two weeks after the Xbox Series X. IIMO, if if MS announces first, many people that are undecided or buying both consoles might jump to them first because of impulse. We know inventory will be tight and I am sure there are people that are going to jump on the first preorder available so they don't risk missing out.

Yeah but sony has the bigger anticipation from fans over their release. microsoft doesnt in gamers eyes, they can afford to wait and see what sony does. they will definatly wait to see sonys price. if sony price high and microsoft can beat the price and have the more powerful console then it could sway people. people are expecting the series X to be more expensive but that SSD in sonys console gonna cost a fair bit as the tech isnt even available for pc yet

It will not sway people that have already dropped $500-$600 on their PS5 preorder. MS would have to be almost instantaneous and would have to undercut Sony significantly. A $50 price difference is not going to matter. The same goes for Sony. If MS announces first they are not going to sway people that have already dropped a preorder on the Series X. In the long-term. Prices can be adjust as MS showed with the Xbox One sale bundles not long after launch. IMO, getting that initial momentum is going to be big. I guess it comes down to how they think they can get the momentum. Announce first and drive preorders or wait to undercut the competition. Both come with risks. When I find myself in those circumstances I tend to take control of my own situation and worry about the other guy later.

As for prices, I see more people predicting the PS5 being expensive. I really think at the end of it all, at least on the high end consoles, the prices are not going to be significantly different. They both have some expensive tech and regardless of how much money either company has they are not going to lose money just to lose it.

I think you forget how many people switched from xbox 360 to PS4 because it was more powerful. Yes the playstation will sell more but your underestimating what will happen in reguards to power and price. Remember the Xbox one was less powerful and more expensive the beginning of this gen.

also Sony didn't have the best lineup at the beginning of the PS4 life span, yes they have put out awesome games but the launch window wasn't great.

Power was not why people switched to PS4. it certainly wasn't the reason in Europe or Japan. And if Xbox think the power crown could reverse their fortunes, they learned the wrong lesson.
