A Sony employee posted a photo on X to show a PS3's boomerang controller to one of it's followers. But there were an interesting detail that could be seen in the picture. There were a last edition PS3 on the same picture were we could see some details...

Great that PS3 made it to 88M, but I don't get something here; it says June 2016, but wasn't PS3 discontinued in Japan in May 2017?
Also, this guy really works at SIE? Man, I would fucking love to visit SIE's headquarters in Minato.

Edging out the 360.
Amazing generation except for the wii IMO.

I think Wii helped set the generation apart and only thing I didn't like about it was really Nintendo nerfing so many games to support the gimmick, I felt that generations lots of titles are actually inferior to their Gamecube counter parts, I find Gamecube the last Nintendo console I actually liked regarding software from Nintendo

Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, Melee, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Luigi's Mansion

Then its like, waggle Zelda, slow as shit nerfed Smash Bros, Mario set on fucking easy with Galaxy mario party ass controls lol I felt my DS get more love that gen and then I felt 3DS get more love the gen after and....it was clear I would just be buying Portables from them moving forward aka The Switch lol

Gamecube was the last time they supported software for the hardcore.

I think Wii still belongs as I think it gave great balance for new gamers, but for the hardcore, it was the beginning of the end regarding Nintendo's actual support for those design styles.

PS4 was discontinued in December 2023 (or so believes the Japanese community), I wonder when we'll see something like this for that console?

I have no knowledge of the real date of the discontinuation. But the last production date and the discontinuation date are different things. Discontinuation occurs when the stock ends.

I think so, he gave some details (like the location of the shelf of PS3s) and some other media that made me believe that:

If you lurk his profile you will see more of it. There's also the famous disclaimer on his bio saying that every post are his opinions and not of the company, so, at least, he is a big shot at some gaming company.

Still surprised the PS3 edged out the 360 in the end. It feels like the 360 absolutely owned that generation. Maybe that’s American bias though.
They came from a 160 million gen while Xbox came from a 25 million gen, people just hated the PS3 price. So it not a big surprise that they had a comeback after price drops. The Blu Ray drive also helped, i think at times the PS3 was cheaper or at least only slightly more expensive than the cheapest Blu Ray players. Besides that it also was a great console, especially the fat lady.

Thanks, genuinely had no idea. Though, that means that PS2 was discontinued well after the reported date of January 2013, doesn't it?

That's so cool, I think I found another account to look up.

Super slim sucked, but slim was great. Too bad it didn't have PS2 backwards compatibility, or it would have been Sony's best console even now.

Well, it certainly was later than end of production, how much later is an information that only sony knows for sure. Maybe ps2 was a faster seller and it was discontinued months later, or maybe the last batch was dedicated to non sellable units

Show me on the doll where the Wii touched you.... lol

Now, seriously, I get the feeling. A great part of its library was composed of cheap terrible games or ports made to take "advantage" of motion controllers. But seeing beyond that, it for sure had a brutal amount of gems that totally make up for the trash. To me, it was a great second console that, sometimes, was played more than my first (PS3) console and pc, that I also had at the time.

Playstation "console" numbers are the most impressive streak in the gaming industry. Just consistently selling great.
Industries outside of gaming would view the fact that PS2's sales numbers haven't been beaten or even approached in over 20 years as a failure on some level.
PS3 marks the beginning of our current era - PlayStation existing as a console that's less popular than the PS2.

When the N64 arrived I was very disappointed in Nintendo... With Gamecube I regained my faith in the console... The Nintendo Wii bothered me so much that I didn't even get the Wii-U, but with the Nintendo switch at first I criticized it... However, it became the second best Nintendo console and one of the best for me.

By the way... I remember that there was a strange controller on the Wii with a green or blue alien bird, which was from that game or that controller... It even had a strange teaser.

PS2 did not sell >150M units before PS3's launch, though.

PS3 is so good. I've been playing mine a lot lately. Easily my favorite console when it comes to UI and console design, I got the fat model w/o PS2 playback.
I still have the OG phat PS3 with PS2 back compat (well GS only, no EE, EE was software emulated in the launch EU PS3). The XMB was soooo cool.

It makes me sad seeing the Switch sometimes and the switch fans that have a console with a LOT more memory and a lit of general purpose CPU power too say that in order for the UI to be responsive it needs to be barebones… sigh.

I loved creating video clips for the video tiles on the XMB UI… such a cool UI…

XMB is the best PS UI and likely approaching the ideal game console UI.
PS3's PS2 BC is half-baked and lacks a bunch of key QOL features that the PS2 has - wired DS2 plug ports, memory card slots and the ability to boot directly into PS2 games.

I would not call it half baked, the features you mentioned are not key to the experience. It is not like controller changed a heckuvalot….
