Sony Shake Up: Hiroki Totoki Named Corporate CEO, Hideaki Nishino Elevated to SIE Solo-CEO, Herman Hulst Reports To Nishino Now

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Sony Corp. is shaking up its leadership ranks in Tokyo and San Mateo, elevating Hiroki Totoki to the top CEO post while Hideaki Nishino takes the reins of Sony Interactive Entertainment as the solo CEO of the unit that houses PlayStation.

The corporate shuffle, effective April 1, was approved late Tuesday by the electronics and entertainment giant’s board of directors in Tokyo. Totoki, a 38-year Sony veteran who most recently served as chief operating officer and chief financial officer, will succeed Kenichiro Yoshida as leader of the company that is a cornerstone of the business landscape in Japan.

Nishino was elevated to CEO of Sony Interactive’s Platform Business Group in May 2024. He shared oversight of the PlayStation maker with Herman Hulst, who was CEO of the division’s studio business group. Those appointments were made in the wake of the departure of CEO Jim Ryan. The elevation of Nishino to the top post overseeing all of SIE caught industry observers by surprise.

Nishino will serve as president and CEO Sony Interactive Entertainment in addition to serving as CEO of the Platform Business Group and CEO of the Studio Business Group. Sony said that Hulst will continue to “lead the development, publishing and business operations of SIE’s first party-content.” He will also be tasked with driving Sony’s push for SIE to work with Sony Pictures in developing adaptations of its gaming franchises as TV shows, movies and other mediums through PlayStation Productions.

edit:

Hulst will continue to serve as CEO of the Studio Business Group and will report to Nishino.

Lin Tao, currently serving as SVP, Finance, Corporate Strategy and Development for SIE, will step down from her position at SIE to become CFO of Sony Group Corporation. Her successor at SIE will be announced at a later time.
Going from Sony Group to SIE, to then come back to Sony Group as CFO of the company.

Does this mean Horizon is over?

No, he's just on games and PS studio movies now, which means probably more Horizon than ever.

Hulst will continue to lead the development, publishing, and business operations of SIE's first party-content. He is also responsible for developing games across many devices including PlayStation consoles and PCs and bringing video game IP to new mediums through PlayStation Productions.

Going from co-CEO in a role to reporting to someone in that role is literally a demotion.
Sounds like he actually lost the CEO hunger games then.
Sony resorting to go back to the old 1 CEO structure while at the same time leaving Hulst with the exact same responsibilities as before, just now requiring one additional 'yes' for whatever he plans to do, doesn't leave too much space for any sort of doom twisting. This is the second (or third) time in a row Totoki has seen him of being capable of leading the content business, cope eternally with that.
Ironically, I actually remember saying a while back that Nishino was kinda like the true successor to Ryan, so them choosing him as the sole CEO of SIE as a whole doesn't really surprise me.

Overall this is a good shake-up; I have no doubt Concord's failure played a part in Hulst's demotion (it's effectively a demotion), as it should. PS hardware itself is selling very well globally, so I see why Nishino got promoted. Totoki getting promoted also makes sense, tho I won't forget he's a money-centric type at the core.

I thought they'd wait until the start of next FY before doing a rearrangement, or at least wait until early March. It is what it is.

By textbook definition it is still a demotion for Hulst tho. You even said it: he has to go through one more person for approval. That's one more than he had to go through yesterday.

His responsibilities may be the same but those responsibilities will now be contingent on requiring additional greenlighting before going through, which likely also means they will be scrutinized & analyzed even more in-depth.

...I do concur about Yoshida tho. Is he still there or is he departing?

This is more of a structural change to divide the responsibility clearer after the initial transitional period. In practice it will change nothing. Hulst is CEO of content and Nishino is taking responsibility for platform, hardware and the communication with the head office.

Having the same responsibilities as before doesn't mean much when he's now working for his former peer and is one rung farther away from the CEO on the org chart. Saying he lost isn't dooming. The truth is that the top job at SIE was actually up for grabs and he didn't get it. Most likely due to his capable leadership.

By textbook definition? Sure, but what I'm not sure about is why anyone should expect anythig significant to come out of this.
Also, spoiler ahead: Nishino will not stop the live service initiative.

Not sure why you simp for this guy so hard. He sucks at his job and everyone but you hates him.

But what I said is an objective fact. It's a demotion. When a company does this, the guy they don't choose usually has enough shame to leave. But it's Hermen Hulst we are talking about.

Oh, don't worry, that part wasn't directed at you. I actually agree that Nishino was a better choice for the top job, simply enough because maintaining a platform ecosystem is THE core of their business.

Top Sony management doesn't quite agree with that, I think we can leave our personal feelings out of the talk.

Huh? I'm actually curious to know about another case *exactly* like this.

BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀

EDIT:
Maybe not as big a shake-up as the OP title suggested? Tho before, Herman and Nishino were Co-CEOs. So in a way it is kind of a demotion for Hulst if he's reporting to Nishino now instead of Totoki.
There is no demotion whatsoever. Co-CEO thing was clearly a transitional period and Hulst was never into hardware and bigger business operations for President post, it was Nishino’s job from the start. For Hulst it’s basically nothing, he is still the head of content. For Nishino this is a promotion sideways, newly created President post is here to narrow down the responsibility to a single person. People are making this more of a fuss than it’s really is.

Nice! I approve of these changes

Because a demotion at a CEO level is almost always a precursor to a resignation. No one wants that to bookend their career. He probably has a bunch of loose ends to manage and then he will likely GTFO.
