I got this email a little while ago:

An Important Notice from the Superior Court of the State of California, County of San Mateo, United States and from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Canada, About a Class Action Settlement Involving the PS2

IF YOU OWN A PS2, YOU COULD GET BENEFITS FROM THE SETTLEMENT.

A proposed settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit concerning the performance of the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system ("PS2"). You may be a member of the Class whose rights may be affected by this lawsuit. The sole purpose of this notice is to inform you of the lawsuit so that you may decide what steps to take in relation to it.

If the settlement is approved, Class Members who complete and return a Claim Form, on or before February 16, 2006, may be eligible to receive settlement benefits. The claim form may be accessed at www.PS2Settlement.com or obtained from the PS2 Settlement Administrator, c/o Rust Consulting, Inc., PO Box 1784, Faribault MN 55021-1784.

I'm not even gonna bother. I've joined several class action suits in the past and gotten the incredible sum of usually $.50-$1.00

Wow, no one else got this?

Or is the SonyGAF board still in denial ?

If this was Microsoft we'd have a 10 page thread by now.

I have heard countless horror stories about PS2 reliability from multiple retailers over the years. Funny thing is, I had a launch PS2 that worked for years without problems, but I went through 3 Xboxs.

my launch ps2(well, it is a launch model) stopped playing blue bottom discs 2 years ago, but anything else is fine. I deal.

it's not really funny, it's just having a small test population. but it's how a lot of beliefs get going. The retailers all knew how bad it was with PS2's though.

I'm on my 3rd PS2 and my friend is on his 2nd. The construction was piss-poor at best with the PS2. In fact, the PS2 and Dreamcast are the only systems I've ever owned that have died on me and I've had them all from Commodore 64 on up.

When you say funny, you mean lucky/unlucky. (depending which camp you lean towards of course)

OK, so if it could somehow be proven that the PS2 has a higher than normal failure rate, wouldn't that mean their numbers on install base are bogus?

Yeah, I didn't really mean "funny" as in the "ha ha" sense of the word.

I have to say it, but if i'm going to have a problem with my system, i'd rather have it fail to read it at all, rather then have random DDE that the xbox I had did.

For the record, both my original launch ps2 and original xbox purchase both failed.

This thread is a good example of why extended warranties on consoles are a good thing. They just aren't that reliable. I have also had a Gamecube fail on me as well.

The only problem I've ever had with my gamecube was that it froze the first time I played rebel strike. I think it was trying to warn me or something..

Was that the one on the planet Hoth? If so, I got that freeze too before. Appeared to be a bug in the game.

The suit only applies to those who bought a new 50001 or 50010 since 9/18/2004 or had a PS2 fail with in 13months.

No it doesn't, I got the email myself. There are three different "classes" of customers in the suit. People with newer systems getting the errors, people who've already paid for Sony to repair their system, and people who still have not gotten it repaired because of the fee Sony charges, but notified Sony within 13 months of purchase.

You need to provide reciept and/or proof of contact with Sony for anything to be done about it.

Sony has stopped waiving repair fees for DDEs now because of the suit. The damages this suit seeks will have Sony making out like a damn bandit FYI, since the original deal of "ship it to us, we'll fix it and ship it back" cost them significantly more than the $25 check/game/$40 repair that this suit seeks will. The only off-set is the widespread notification, which probably won't do much, since it requires pretty specific actions to be taken within a limited timeframe.

What's worse, if Sony wins then everyone with DDEs = am fucked total, since they're no longer responsible. Sony isn't settling, its supposed to go to court some time in April.

Failure was related to either dust or last calibration errors the vast majority of the time, I'd say. Both problems can be easily fixed, as I used to do it all the time for people.

Of course, for the casual user, it would be pretty much impossible to repair on their own and they'd have to send it in. The more recent models are free of these problems.

If you used your PS2 in a rather dust free environment AND generally stayed away from blue backed CDs (which I believe may have caused problems with the calibration dur to vibration), I could see how your launch PS2 would still work.
