Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Will this tv give me the best of the best for HDR 4K ps4 pro stuff?https://www.expert.no/tv/tv/sony-kd55xd7005baep/p-413217/

If you want the best of the best chose between LG E6/G6, Pana 902DX, Samsung KS9590 and Sony ZD9. I would not consider the ZD9 due to software problems and my short impressions at a friends and an electronic store (awesome image quality but many little flaws that are not acceptable for that price). Out of the other three it depends if money is tight. If so get the cheapest one, if you want a little bit variety regarding HDR standards and the (imo) best OS get the LG. All of these TVs are pretty amazing so you will be satisfied either way.

If the TV can't be that expensive potential TVs are the Samsung KS8000 and the Vizio P-series. Since digital foundry is using a pretty inexpensive Pana LCD for their tests this unit might also be a good consideration (If I am not utterly mistaken it has an 8bit panel though).

Your linked TV does not support "real" HDR (at least if it is exactly the same model as in Germany).

Just in case someone isn't aware of this. You don't always need to upgrade to a 4K compatible receiver if you are thinking of getting a PS4Pro. You just have to wire it all up differently (maybe).

I used to have all my consoles going into the receiver and then a single HDMI connection going to the TV. So I could switch inputs with the receiver and have surround sound for everything. To use a 4K source I would need to upgrade the receiver to pass a 4K signal through with this configuration.

I've been looking into this because I can't afford to get a new receiver as well. Turns out you can use "Audio Return Channel (ARC)". Had to fiddle around with this to get it working (enabling HDMI-CEC on everything and digging through the manual). I now have everyhing going straight into the TV and the 5.1 audio being passed from the TV via HDMI into the non 4K receiver. I had to drop down from 7.1 linear PCM to 5.1 dolby digital but it saved me $400+ dollars.

Apparently most HDMI devices after 2009 have some sort of Audio Return Channel (was news to me as I never needed it until now).

Don't do that. The 120Hz thing.

Why not? Fry the tv? I was just testing, note that my 970 can running the game in 120fps at all time, but even 80+ in fight and 100+ when nothing happen is quite a difference.

Yeah, I just discovered that after I bought a new receiver, then again, after gaming on ps3 in 7.1 PCM for so many years, no way I will go back to DD 5.1

I think he was saying he was actually running doom at 120fps, not interpolating a consoles output.

It can't display 4k@10bit 60HZ with 4:4:4 because of stupid hdmi 2,0 limitations. Another time hdmi is holding back tvs. Bad if you wanted to use it as monitor

Are you sure?

The X800D accepts a 120Hz signal, but has a 60Hz panel so it can only display half of the frames. It supports chroma 4:4:4 at up to 4k @ 60Hz. To display 4:4:4, set the scene to 'Graphics' or 'Game'. This results in an input lag of 33.3ms. It accepts a 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 signal only HDMI 2 and 3, and requires 'Enhanced HDMI' to be enabled in the input settings.

I'm a noob when it comes to these things. Why are those specs required to use a display as a monitor? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, while not locked at 120fps but @ 80+ fps min and 100+ fps when nothing is happening, already a very noticable difference. I think its worth paying more for a bigger screen and 1080p@120hz support for pc, and motionflow @ 120hz if anyone is planning to get the 49" x800D

I think that is correct, if you set your tv output to 4:4:4, the color output is maxed out at 8 bit. Only 4:2:2 or lower allow 10 or 12 bit. All hdr uhd bd media contents are encoded in 4:2:0 anyway.... Should matter too much.

I have a 43 inch 4K Vizio in my bedroom. I sit 5 feet from it in a comfy chair. Not all people want a gaming tv for their living room.

Yep. I use my 40" bedroom TV for everything and stand less than a metre from it. At that distance it's enormous, and it gives good quality at a low price.

That does sound correct. Which means all 4K HDR TVs will have this limitation.

Guys, don't get the x800D, get the one up X850D, I bought that yesterday and just tested DOOM in 120Hz, Holy shiiiiiit!
Nah man. I owned the 850d for a few weeks, when you set your pc to 120 hz, this tv displays artifacts (little one inch lines that flicker all accross the screen, like snow kind of). You can lower a custom resolution in nvidia control to 90hz or so to mostly get rid of this problem, but combined with the absolutely garbage black levels of this panel, it's not worth it. If youre gonna spend 1200 on a tv, for no reason should you buy the 850d, get the ks8000. It's a night and day imorovement. Trust me, I owned both.

Need that 4:4:4 12bit Dolby Vision pumped straight into my eye holes if I have to spend more than $1K for a decent size 4K HDR tv...

I was at a Best Buy tonight and yeah the HDR displays look nice but I feel like I could make 8bit video look 90%+ if I just had a really bright display. Was disappointed at how different each of the HDR displays looked. A lot of it would just be preference.

Btw, I'm a colorist and vfx artist and the price for a professional monitor that supports HDR is ridiculous.

TLDR; HDR is a lot of hype with some subjective benefit

Really depends on the demo reel too. For instance the LG chess one is great, but the vizio p lego one doesn't do the set justice at all. A good set calibrated and in your living room, playing the right content will give you a strange giddy feeling.

Here's a detailed primer that covers all the technical jargon and specifications, regarding UHD TVs and etc.

Topics covered are:

4K resolution
Wide color gamut
Color bit depth
Color subsampling
HDMI versions
HDCP
HDMI data rates
HDMI cables
Display certification standards
HDR

It's a good read before pulling the trigger on any expensive 4K set purchase.

I mean for the folks who also plan on using it for pc games of course. Like myself :0

I knew whatcha meant.....I was just talking majority buyers lol.

Monitor is probably secondary to what they are going to use it for. I'm still going to use my current monitor for my PC, I would need to up my CPU before trying to push 4k on my budget build.

So I ended up buying this TV this weekend and have been enjoying it. Had some really weird issues on day one though. It froze a few times, and I had to unplug it and plug it back in, then it would display the Sony logo and just hang there forever until I unplugged it and plugged it back in again. And just general sluggish OS.

Since then though its been fine. Odd.

By the way there isn't any setting I have to activate for 4:4:4 upscaling, right? I didn't see anything. It should just upscale whatevers on the screen automatically, right?

444 is in your gpu control panel. If youre not on pc, you cant do and dont need 444.

I've calibrated my Vizio at home once, regretted it by the next morning.

A calibrated display in a controlled environment is a better idea.

Also after using a calibrated Flanders Scientific Display I can never trust any television. I really wish TV's got rid of 95% of their "features" too.

A great display calibrated correctly for your living room will look fantastic though. Especially if out of box settings are torch mode.

I guess I forgot to include the why I regretted it.
Ambient Color temp changes throughout the day, I calibrated it at night, in the morning everything was off. I have a lot of window space in my living area and I can only block so much of it. I've since fixed things to be about as good as this tv can get. Still get weird dimming issues that I can't seem to fix, especially bad with letterboxed videos.

So if you can have a theater room, I suggest using that for your good displays.

So this TV would be worth it guys?

If you're on a tight budget that 43 inch seems like a good price for what youre getting, as long as you don't care about a stellar hdr experience. For the price of the 49 inch I would just spend a little more for the 49 ks8000 or the vizio p 50.

Add me to the "i want a 43" panel because i have no more space in the studio for anything bigger and i sit an inch from the screen"....

The HDR is less than stellar? That would be the whole reason I'd get this tv. Can you elaborate on that? Don't have time to read back through the entire thread.

The HDR should be fine and still noticeable, but with that peak brightness level, don't expect to have your socks knocked off.

For a 43 inch, this is the tv to get. Seems like a great tv at a fine price point

For a 49, go with the samsung ks8000 or a vizio p 50 for the extra 200 dollars.

thats what people and all the reviews are saying except a 55" ks8000 cost $1100 more in Canada then the x850D, I might as well get a X930D for that price. Plus I used to get all the samsung electronic but done with them, every samsung electroncis that I got for the last few years were shit. Just today someone has posted on the avsforum today saying that there are 2 revision forthe X850D, first is made in China, second is the better one with more vibrant color from Mexico. Mine is made in Mexico so maybe there is some truth to the story. I don't notice the greyish black from that revie on rtings, even the demo unit at bestbuy is showing the black just as good as the other brand of the same class. There is artifacts when I turn on 120hz for the x850d, but I only notice them during loading screen, when playing in doom, everything move so fast and smooth I hardly ever notice them. Changing the picture mode to graphics also reduce the artifacts.

I mean that's great you're having a good experiece, but for me and I'm sure many others, the artifacts at 120 hz are a huge deal breaker. I feel like the rtings review downplays them even, I found them super distracting, and noticeable during gameplay regardless of the settings. I can't recommend anyone spend 1200 dollars on that tv, especially if in the US, where the ks8000 is only 100 more.

The blacks are certainly not as good as other brands in the same class, I'd even go as far as to say they're the worst I've ever seen, and are absolutely unacceptable for the price point. It's an ok tv if you can find a deal on it, but in low light conditions, dark scenes in tv and movies are completely ruined by the glow of the IPS screen.

Edit: I originally chose this TV over the samsung ks8000 because it supports 120hz. I figured the decreased black levels would be something I would deal with, but as soon as I saw how bad the artifacts were, I was unsold on it. If you want 120hz, vizio P 55 all the way.

I think I'll get one of these. The 49" is only $150 more. $800 seems like a great price. ks8000 is $1200. Not doing that. Not sure if I should wait to see if there'll be a black Friday sale though.

KS800 is a pretty big step up if you're planning to be at the 49" size. I'd wait to see what Black Friday brings if I were you. That extra few hundred dollars could pay off big if you can find a way to swing it.

Thing that's tough for me is that I need something in the 40-43" range. I game in my office and sit only ~4 feet from my display. Kinda' sucks that there's nothing really full-featured at that size. Have to deal with edge-lit units with not-so-good blacks and average peak brightness.

Yeah, I can't blame you, but here in canada the price difference is like comparing a high end to low. I actually email sony support about it and they said they will forward my msg to the tech/engineering department. Guess maybe I will report back in a few months when they release the android tv 6 update.

Just checked Best Buy in canada. Almost $1000 difference between Sony 850D and Samsung KS8000 (both 55")

I am going to wait till Black Friday and see whats on sale. Walk in with a wad of cash and walk out with a 4K HDR TV

Subbing this thread to see GAFers impressions over time.

Very tempted to get this 43" to replace my old 37" Panny 1080p IPS-panel TV from almost 10 years ago, would use it as a monitor for the new PC I built over the summer and it could also make me get a PS4 Pro as well.

the x850d is a 120 hz display @ 1080p. its not interpolating anything, you can actually run 1080p @ 120 fps on it

one of the reasons it is such a great PC monitor.... 55" 1080p @ 120 hz or 4k/60. it will also take almost any resolution you throw at it unlike many tvs

i have the same tv hooked up to a 980ti

I currently have a 32" 720p TV. Never got around to upgrading to a 1080p TV. Not really sure how big I should go. I thought 43" sounded pretty good, but if I can get an extra 6" for just $150, that seems like a good deal. I guess I'll go for the KS800 if there are any deals that bring it down to around that same $800 range.

Guess I need to buy an HDMI 2 cable too for my laptop-TV connection.

It does display artifacts at 120hz though, and they are noticeable. I found I could almost eliminate them by reducing it to around 90hz though.
