Sony's best this generation.

The Jak series
The GT series
Ratchet and Clank series
Sly series
Wipeout
Twisted Metal
God of War
Wanda
Amplitude
Frequency
ICO

The list goes on.

At the end of the Nintendo 64/Playstation generation, someone would have probably looked back and said that Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time were Nintendo's best.

What one or two titles do you think will best define the peak of Sony's first party developers?

I think Sony has really improved over last generation. They've done a helluva job finally releasing (mostly) consistently quality products and it shows.

Personally, I think God of War will definitely be there when it releases. I don't want to jump to conclusions, because I'm super hyped for GoW, but I felt the demo showed that much promise.

ICO, yes. Dunno about Wanda, too far off.

Gran Turismo series of course.

And I think with Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet and Clank finally solidified itself as some of the best platformers ever made (or is it "action-platformer"?)

Sony is by far the best first party publisher nowadays.

They do a fantastic job at offering a great mix of new franchises and sequels.

I love the Sly games. Hope to see the series continued on the PS3/PSP along with Sony's other platform games. Sony really came through with their games this gen.

take these out. The 1st cause they were shit

the second cause judgement's still out on that.

I'd also take out WipeOut. The series has been lackluster at best this gen.

Sony = overrated.

When they give me a new WarHawk and Jumping Flash, all will be forgiven. C'mon Sony, give them to me already!!

God of War if it turns out to be good, along with the GT series, ICO, and Rachet & Clank.

Ape Escape and the GT 1&2 were their best last gen.

Almost all of those games could be considered top-notch, although God of War and Wanda and the Colossus aren't out, so I can't really count those yet. I'd also say that Wipeout Fusion doesn't quite measure up to most of the others listed above, although I still consider it pretty darn good.

If I had to narrow it down to just one game, I'd probably pin it on Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal right now. I got Gran Turismo 4 a few weeks ago, and am just starting to get into it (needed to free some space on my memory card)--that's also a big winner in my book.

I'd tend to gravitate towards "E for Everyone" games when considering games that appeal to as broad an audience as possible. This would unfortunately whittle away about 2/3 of the list above, leaving you with just the Gran Turismo games, the Sly Cooper games, the first Jak & Daxter, Wipeout Fusion (even though Bam published it here), and Frequency. That's still an excellent group of games. :)

One thing you have to define is whether you're talking about Sony development or Sony publishing. Most of those titles are only published by Sony, and not actually developed by them, or any of their internal devs.

Ratchet & Clank, Sly, Jak & Daxter, Socom... I believe Amplituted and Frequency and even Wipeout (which has been horrible on PS2 and not even published by Sony), are all made by independent developers that happen to make their games exclusive for Sony.

Who's developing God of War?

As for Sony's best games this generation that THEY developed internally? Easy. GT Series and ICO.

Sony is seriously underrated when it comes to first/second party games. War of the Monsters and Downhill Domination come to mind, not the best games but interesting and innovative. All the others on the list are gold as well.

Oh the sin...

Well I'm not trying to compare Sony to anything, so I mean published games. They've developed more games in-house than Microsoft or Nintendo too.

Don't own a single game in any of those for my PS2's. Try again.

Edit: Oh, you mean made by Sony. NM

These two are definitely underrated. Loved just about every minute of both.

Sony owns Naughty Dog and SCE Liverpool, and I think they may own Harmonix. I would be somewhat surprised if they don't buy Insomniac and Zipper as well (though I also wouldn't be surprised if Insomniac leaves Sony next gen). SCE Santa Monica is developing God of War.

Anyway, Sony has pretty much replaced Sega for me this gen (though I still have faith for next gen! :p). They're such an amazing company that puts out an absolutely absurd number of awesome, original titles that really appeal to me. The titles I consider to be their pinacle right now are GT4 and Ico, though I am positive God of War will be right alongside those very soon. Twisted Metal Black is up there to me, too, but really there are just a ton of great games that they have done.

Sony really came together as a publisher this generation. Their first part titles really hit on the whole action/platforming in a way that makes me feel fuzzy as if I was playing that almost enless list of action/platformers back in the Genesis days. :D
I loved ICO and Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. I hope to get God of War when I can.
I think they have a good thing going now between their first party and the stuff from Square, Capcom, Konami.
One you missed is Ape Escape 2. Sure, it was published by UBIsoft, but it was developed by Sony.

yea baby.

I m so pissed I ve upgraded my pc 1 year ago with radeon 9600. and the fucken doom3 runs like crap on it. The entire set up costs around $800 processors etc. Could have save $150 that time reusing my nividia mx. :(
and stick to playing on ps2 . hmm i guess i ve to untilise it on AOE 3 :D

oh well. kick arse. to the ps2. Gotta lurve all the action/platformer and adventure games :D
Thank u thank u SONY.

And guess what dreamSnes running on it rules with super mario all stars. Oh don't tell me to compare it with the xbox. :P Its just a bonus to me :D

And for dark cloud 2. I ve just got started 5 hours on it. Lurve the battles and the deungons.
Awesone,

Though that is a highly debatable statement, it CAN be debated, which is an extremely different situation from when they started out not that many years ago. They've come a long way, that's for sure.

Honestly, for the games that have already been released on that list, none of those rate in the 10s for me. ICO was awesome and definitely a solid 9. Amplitude / Frequency 7 or 8s GT4 8 or 9. Wipeout this gen, blah. For the rest, I'm not really that into platformers. Dark Cloud 2 is the closest Sony published game to a 10 for me but I can't give quite give it out.

I think when people look back on the PS2's generation they're not going to be remembering a whole lot of Sony's 1st party stuff and they'll instead reflect on the cornicoupia of good 3rd party stuff.

Good to see SONY getting the publisher/dev credit.

Seems like it wasnt until well into the PS2 life that alot of people would accept the idea that Sony made games.

I gotta agree. Syphon Filter 1 and Syphon Filter 2 were really awesome games. I loved the taser soo much :D Burning enemies was really cool, definately one of the most fun weapons.

They have been really good this gen but the latest Syphon Filter was really dissapointing. Hope the PSP version is better.

All Sony divisions have made some fantastic games, my favs are; Ico, Ape Escape 2, Jak series, Sly 1 and R&C games. Looking forward to Wanda, Ape Escape 3, and God of War.

Well, going into this generation, Sony didn't have close to the number of high quality games. Let's be honest.

Honestly, you're wrong. Not only did Sony have higher quality games in general last gen, but their games sold better overall too.

Warhawk, WipEout 1-3, Colony Wars 1-3, Twisted Metal 1-2, Ape Escape, Gran Turismo 1-2, Motor Toon GP, Omega Boost, Spyro 1-3, Crash 1-3, Crash Team Racing, Devil Dice, Intelligent Cube 1-2, Jumping Flash 1-2, Alundra, Wild ARMS 1-2, Arc the Lad 1-3, Aquanaut's Holiday, Tail of the Sun, Carnage Heart, Hot Shots Golf 1-2, Jet Moto, MediEvil 1-2, Syphon Filter 1-2, Parappa, Lammy, Raiden Project, Gunner's Heaven, Project Hornel Owl, Elemental Gearbolt, Rally Cross, G-Police, Destruction Derby, F1 '97-'99, Ghost in the Shell, Philosoma, Lomax, Tomba 1-2, Coolboardsers 1-2, Hermie Hoppehead, vib-ribbon, PoPoLoCrois 1-2, Gun Parade March, Kowloon's Gate and tons more. Not to mention good games from 989 Sports and western publishing support for Square, Enix & GameArts RPGs. Sony has most definitely taken a step back imo, Ico's really the only thing that transcends what they managed in the PS1 era and that game is rooted in PS1 design anyway. Back then SCEA was the most daring publisher on the market and actually expanded demographics... these days they worry about not having their lineup "enough like Xbox". :(

you forgot about kula world - one of the best puzzle games around!!! shame on you :D

btw.

overall i think - sony is better with this generation. the only somewhat of a letdown is sony europe. their games (thanx to psygnosis) were better last generation. i still like primal / killzone / eyetoy -> but i miss the blockbuster games from them.
