Speaking of AI, when’s the last time

F.E.A.R. ?

Feels like interesting AI routines isn't much of a thing anymore (sorry if I'm blanking on some significant game in the intervening years).

Halo Reach is only right answer and I really didn't like it that much. It's not just idiotic more damage and more health, when you are above heroic, those fucks try to come to your back, those which only has melee, they will go on seemingly non sensical path and this kind of good stuff. I was impressed how much I was dying on Legendary due to their trick.

Then on second playthrough, I go with easy and they will go straight to you, like sheep. This is how it should be done and also it was done X360, so no CPU is really not that limiting factor (well it is, when you do it through ML), but sadly since that time 🤷‍♂️

Are we talking only about last time and not old games? Then Division 2 maybe?!

Not some advanced real human level ia, but all enemies are aggressive, they all understand their role and when to run from you, and their pincer manouvres are pretty great.

I could say tlou2, but that game has a lot of smoke and mirrors to make you believe that the enemies are far smarter than they are...even in max difficulty they still have suicidal behaviour and a lot of exploitable stuff, they look and sound smart but that's mostly that, still better than the ia ia a lot of shooters tho and the smoke and mirrors are nice to look\hear anyway.

Outriders has some nice moments where enemies run from you depend on the class and they do some pincher manouvres, i was expecting worse from cannon fodder enemies to be honest.

Still, not exactly blown away by any of this, we really need a re-haul of ia routines in games, i don't buy the " too realistic is not fun to fight" narrative at all.

Division 2 when it first came out. The amount of complaints were hilarious. The AI was dead aggressive and very active in flanking and rushing you. They really had you on the back foot

Gitta say, Outriders AI looked pretty good to me. Enemies actually felt intelligent as they changed positions and tried to close in on me, while some others remained as snipers etc.

Virtua Fighter 5 on Xbox 360. Best AI in a fighting game ever.

They even implemented several types of AI for each character, to mimic fighting against real players. You could really feel that Lau, or Wolf (for example), were not being played the same way depending on the "CPU player" you were competing against.

Too bad the original version of VF5 on 360 is not BC. It had an awesome single player campaign that was removed from Final Showdown.

Dead or Alive games have some pretty great AI as well.

+1 for Division 2. Them cunts were ruthless at times. Even though they called out what they were doing they never stayed In the same spot and you weren't able to cheese them much because of how aggressive they were in switching up their tactics.

This is an interesting topic. It's stupid easy to write AI that can defeat a player, so what makes the AI good?

...being clever, yet defeatable?

I think the most obvious answer is Chess. If you want to talk more modern games, I'd probably say some kind of strategy game.

...in these types of games, it's the game rules themselves that hold the AI back, not an ambiguous difficulty setting.

How do you determine the shooting accuracy of an AI?

All these people want mongoloid enemies, and don't we have already destiny for that?!

Half-Life 1 Marines. Think they show up in the 4th level.

First, this badass OST starts. You hear the marine chatter, throw a grenade at them they say "oh shit" , reacting to it and it was the first time i ever saw enemies flank me and not just bum rush forwards or keep staying in their cover and popping in and out.

You were blown away and/or continually caught off guard by the way the AI operated in a game?
Halo combat evolved.

Twenty years ago. Why did we even make more powerful consoles when the games are less advanced, with less physics (half life 2 wins this one) and more MTX/open world fluff

Age of Empires 2. Those archers, skirmishers and bombard cannons shooting and running away. :messenger_ogre:

I don't have an answer myself for the thread but a lot of you are confusing outright difficult to beat AI for impressively lifelike AI, which I think is more in the spirit of the thread.

I don't think many developers make this a priority. Even with better tech, it's just graphics, graphics, graphics.

FEAR I guess. Killzone 2 was also very good.

I would wish for better, more dynamic AI. But I'm not convinced that it's a priority on anyone's list currently. Talking about devs of course.

Until yesterday I would have said Half Life 2 ... then I tried Outriders and the AI is just looking for you, they surround you and try them all to get you out.
I was quite amazed.

And they also run from you depends on the class, i saw regualr soldiers and snipers running from me and my shotgun :lollipop_squinting:

An overlooked game i would also say was operation flashpoint dragon rising, sure its buggy as hell but the team and enemy AI are pretty impressive when the game doesnt glitch, especially your team mates as you could basically complete the whole game without ever firing a bullet

Can't find the clip of Half Life 1 where the marines drop down from the roof. So, just imagine it.

And here it is. Yep. They effectively countered my different approaches, one time surrounding me, one time driving me out with a granade toward an ambush and so on. It was impressive. Number one reason why HL2 was a huge letdown for me.

Halo CE & FEAR

It has been a while since I saw anything that was a step forward from those.
