Speaking of AI, when’s the last time

I think the last/most recent time AI legitimately wowed me was Alien Isolation. Because you felt like you were the mouse in so many ways. Just as you were meant to.

There were moments where it almost felt TOO accurate or even "cheap" but, a lot of the time it just felt very intelligent.

That being said, I really miss AI being a talking point in games. I feel like AI hasn't been in that position for several years. Even then it was the occasional game here, and there.

Doom 2016.
The AI doesn't let you turtle nor funnel them into choke-points. For it to work as good, a lot of pretty impressive stuff is going on under the hood. You don't really think about it during gameplay, but the game wouldn't be as good without great AI systems.

Can't find the clip of Half Life 1 where the marines drop down from the roof. So, just imagine it.

And here it is. Yep. They effectively countered my different approaches, one time surrounding me, one time driving me out with a granade toward an ambush and so on. It was impressive. Number one reason why HL2 was a huge letdown for me.

Exactly! I thought i was the only one that thought the Combine AI in HL2 was way way below HL1.

I get blown away by AI all the time...but not in a good way. I'm continually impressed with how utterly retarded most implementations are, more artificial, less intelligent.

That being said...the AI in AI was pretty good. It genuinely felt like the Alien was learning. I got stuck earlier on because I hunkered down too much and it'd keep finding me. It wasn't until I started varying my behaviour and keep moving that I started to find it easier. Didn't use weapons at all until after the reactor hive either, so most of the game was cat and mouse like that. IMO you get the ability to fight back way too early and it's worth self imposing that restriction for most of the game.

Half-Life 1 and FEAR are the only times I can remember being impressed by AI. Some early 3D open world games probably weren't that impressive in that sense (I'm thinking like GTA3 and Vice City era) but I appreciated how they let me finish missions by beating the limited AI through emergent gameplay before on rails scripted gameplay completely took over the genre.

Division 2 AI were an absolute masterclass at flanking you. Before that, it was QUITE a long time since AI impressed me... probably FEAR 1.

TLOU2 on highest difficulty. The enemies felt like they hunting you.
They feel that way because they're literally programmed to gravitate towards you, even if you don't make a move. It's hilariously obvious how the AI works in that game

Halo Reach on Legendary blew all my expectations last year. Every time I died and tried again, the battle got different, specially large battles. The game have the best AI in a FPS I played by far. Modern or classic titles -and yes, I'm including FEAR.

It is not only how smart the enemies are, they are fun and interesting even when they do stupid moves. Every AI pattern, be intelligent tactics or dumb shit has a gameplay purpose. I'm playing Halo OG on Legendary on MCC! The AI is not as varied as Reach but it is great as well.

I was a very lucky to not have played Halo when I had my PS3. Love my console and its exclusives but it would be painful to know I would not play Halo Reach that gen.

Now I'm a big Halo fan, and very happy I have Halo 2, Halo 3 and ODST to play for the first time yet! Crossing my fingers for Infinite also.
