Spencer: Scorpio targets requirements of high-end costumers - means a higher price

It's just the same old cheap trick. Set up the expectations high, it's premium whatever. Then they announce it's $400 and people go woah, that's good and impulse buy.

I was of the mind that Scorpio would launch at $399, but based on this just now I'll tack on $100 more. Scorpio will launch at $499.

Better not be more.

I thought similar and then questioned whether theyd add an elite controller on top of it, i still settled on $500

$399 to $449 is my guessed range, depending on how the market continues to react to Xbox One S and Pro.

Xbox seems to be somewhat catching up, at least from a consumer´s goodwill perspective, but time is not on their side if they really plan to launch Scorpio in late 2017.

If there would be a Xbox Two and not the Scorpio, they would release it 2 years later. The normal price of a console launching currently is 400, so bringing that 2 years earlier would mean 450 or 500 (depending on the specs). I dont know how people expect it to be 400.

PS4 Pro is 400 now, should be 350 next year when Scorpio drops. 50 price difference only between them? Only the UHD Drive has a 20 dollars difference in production (lets say it will be 15 next year), so only 35 dollars difference in the rest of the hardware? no.

also, 500gb storage? no way, it will start with 1tb. games for it will be bigger, so it needs more space.

make it a 599 system. make it viable to last at least 4-5 years and i will gladly buy it.

I hope that's the case. The S is a nice console, there's no good reason to do an upgraded box for enthusiasts and worry about price when they already have an appealing box on the shelves at a mass market price.

But $500 would still be kinda cheap no?.
Even PC graphic cards with 6tflops are still going for like $300 or more

If the Surface team is really working on it I'd expect the minimum price to be $499. I bet we even see a $599 SKU if not more. They are going to try to bridge the gap between consoles and high end PCs with this thing.

Better to underpromise and overdeliver I say,

My guess is this will be priced at $450 for the base model, with larger disks priced up to $550 (1TB) or $600 (2TB), Sounds reasonable for me for a late 2017 device.

I did like how Spencer yesterday during the 15 year celebration said. That its great to see people sending him pics off their receipt for Scorpio already. But said people just should wait until they say more and show more. "everybody can say 6 teraflops on stage"

People have receipts for Scorpio already? Retailers are taking pre orders?

I'm not sure why people keep saying MS learned their lesson from Xbox one.

This console doesn't have the used games bullshit that pissed off a lot of people. Massively underpowered compared to its rival which was cheaper. Doesn't force Kinect on people.

If the Xbox one launched with no used games bullshit, no Kinect and was more powerful than the price would have been justified. I think the sales in the US would have been closer if that was the case.

All Phil needs to worry about is the mixed messaging we get from MS especially during E3 time.

lol no, there are two fundamental difference in both Surface and Xbox.

Surface is an aspiration device, they dont want to sell that many instead they want their OEM to learn amd copy from it and make cheaper devices.

Xbox they WANT to sell as many as they can, and they are the only one making it.

I personally wish price wasn't an issue for consoles. Sure I like when things are affordable, but $50 or $100 for a ton more power is a bargain to me.

That said, we'll see how much more expensive it is, and how the market reacts.

"Spencer: Scorpio targets requirements of high-end costumers - means a higher price"

Why would it target people who make costumes? Seems like a relatively small group.

Things get interesting if Scorpio is ~$450 and pro is ~$350 with a game next fall. May be a hard sell without much visual difference. We all know that third parties won't be hitting solid 4K 60fps with effects. Should be quite a show next year.

Some places do, yes. It's not unusual. I had a PS4 pre-order way before a price was released. They just added the price after and didn't charge until it was shipped.

500 would be a suicide when it's not even a new gen.

Xbox isn't dependent on Scorpio. Scorpio is just an option, and the enthusiasts who would pay $500 for a significant upgrade would pay $600 for an even more substantial upgrade. The point being, price shouldn't be a driving factor in this case since they're going all out for an already small portion of the market.

What does it sound like?

Sounds like it will cost more than that. And with $399 being that magic price tag for successful new consoles these days, it's a bold move to go beyond.

That said, I think all is about bang for the bucks, so if Scorpio really turns out the be a full-blown high-end console, it will still sell well even if it costs more than that.

I expect $500 and will happily pay it, as long as the hardware specs are there (which I expect they will be). I have been impressed with the Pro so far so I can't wait to see what can be done with Scorpio.

Everyday there's Spencer that talks about Scorpio, adding nothing to what we already know....

Yeah, it's gonna be a LONG year for MS..... LOL

... Sounds to me like he is managing expectations on price.
Could be to soften up the blow of a $449-$499, or create high price expectations to arrive with a $399 and make people think it's much cheaper than expected.

Given the high end specs (not only 6TF GPU but also beefier CPU, UHD drive and a higher end chipset all around, possibly a SSD as well) a $499 or even $599 price tag wouldn't surprise me though, covering both ends of the market (with the XB1S @$249) and being pretty much a mid range Win 10 HTPC as expected, with the Xbox branding and UI.

No way in hell it's gonna be $399. I thought we knew this already though since they've been saying "Premium" since it was first revealed.

I can't believe anyone is still talking $399. How many different ways does he have to say it?

$499 minimum, wouldn't be shocked at a $599 SKU. One S is going to be the mainstream affordable option.

There is a market for premium products (Apple and the Elite controller are two examples).

If MS get the messaging right then they can sell quite a few to early adopters, and then sell it in as a phased replacement for One's as people look to upgrade over time, and the hardware gets cheaper.

They are firmly targetting 4K gaming, with the cost that comes from that and the expectation that the customer will also have a 4K TV.

MS don't need a mass market price on day 1...unless they want to buy market share from Sony.

Any info on customer demographics would be interesting actually. There is the kids/parents market and the 20-30's market...I have no idea how large the 30+ market really is, but I suspect it gets bigger all the time
