Spin Magazine: "Ok Computer" - Radiohead - best album in last 20 years

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
I would agree with OK Computer being #1 over the last 10 years. No album since has even come close to its scope and cohesion. But over the last 20... I'd have to think about that one.

That list has a few really uh, interesting, choices for the other 99 though.

I have no problem with OK Computer at #1 as I've often tossed in my mind between that and The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. Which begs the question, where are the Manics? Fuckin Spin magazine.

Nice to see Afghan Whigs on there, even if it just squeaked in at 99 (though Black Love is a much better album than Gentlemen).

It's nice to know there are other Afghan Whigs fans in the world.

Also, The Argument was a much better Fugazi cd than 13 Songs, though 13 Songs was probably more influential.

I like Repeater and Red Medicine. Did you ever seen them live? They are/were incredible live.

Repeater's a great one, I'm yet to hear Red Medicine. Unfortunately, I got into them a little late, was unable to see them live. Hopefully they get back together sometime, I'd love to catch a concert. If you like their live performances, you may be interested in the bootlegs they're selling: http://www.fugaziliveseries.com/

I'm as big a Fugazi fan as they come, and I agree with you here. Fuck, 13 Songs is a compilation, not an album. Even if it were an album, Repeater and In on the Kill Taker are better records.

I don't really care for Neutral Milk Hotel, really. I've never understood why people are so in love with that album. I sort of like the songs on the first album more.

Bell! WTF is SFA? Sub-question: Which SFA album should've made the cut (only 1)?

Given the albums they're picking for other artists, I'd have to go with Radiator myself.

Yeah, Radiator is the one almost everyone loves.

Unfortunately, SFA has no cultural relevance, so they can't really go on a list like that. You know how they'd place with me, though.

It's a crime, really. At least Parklife is on there.

Pavement - SM on vocals and Guitar. Where as Spiral Staricase on Guitar and Vocals, haaa haaa... Gary Young on drums, vodka and the complete history of yes. Bob N. on firm handshake, percussion and backing vocals. This is the work without there promotions, nothing to do with me by the way. Mark Ibold on bass and dustdevil. And apparently Gary insists that he here these programs in a bar in Stockton California, well after Glastenbury I can beleave anything! :lol :lol :lol

I like how they left Michael Jackson COMPLETELY off the list because of his trial.

Yeah, great "list".

I dunno about mellon collie, but the infinate sadness got the shaft...

More as the years go by, im convinced that "Soiled Little Filly" is about the Smashing Pumpkins.

Yes, they left Michael Jackson off the list because of his trial. That was actually the opening sentence of the feature: We left Michael Jackson off the list because of the trial.

:rolleyes, it's quite obvious they left him off the list because of his trial and the controversy surrounding him

Well I agree alot of the list is total garbage, but I don't include MJ's post-Thriller career as anything to rank him as his self proclaimed "King of Pop" moniker by any stretch. The fact that his lastest works are left off the list doesn't dimish the list by any means for me. Someone pointed out The Joshua Tree isn't on there--that makes the list totally bullshit.

no disintegration, no slowdive album, nothing by the london suede and when you start thinking about non-english stuff like manu chao...this is a bullshit list.
these american pop magazine lists are always so english centered, most far they'll go is to include some british bands, and thats about it. sucks.

I personally don't care for Radiohead or OK Computer anymore, but I think it's the perfect choice for #1. There's not a more daring album that's as loved and as successful than it.

What about us Spin?

I like a lot from that list, but as a metal dork I've gotta give kudos to Spin for recognizing "Reign in Blood" and "Master of Puppets." I think Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" or perhaps "Vulgar Display of Power" could have gone on there as well, though.

There are several albums I'd personally rate higher, of course, but they weren't as influential.

Star Power said:
That's quite sad. Get cracking, young'n.

It's more that I'm too old, or my tastes are too old. Most of my favorite music was made in the 60s-70s. Most of the modern music I enjoy isn't mainstream enough to get mentioned in a mag like Spin, nor is it generally the kind of music that comes across well in the studio-produced album format.

Slowdive sucks anyway. Souvlaki is the most boring album ever... really, shoegazer was such a singles genre. "Sunshine Smile," "Alisson," "Cloudless," "Leave Them All Behind," etc... if only the respective albums lived up to those songs. Loveless truly is leagues above alll of the other shoegaze stuff.

But yesm there are tons of glaring omissions, I agree. But eh, what did you expect.

But they were so obviously trying to be controversial by picking that Cure album over, say, Kiss Me or Disintegration.

if there was ever anything good i said about your taste, i take it back.

also check out "bethany curve", though i get the feeling you will sum up their music as "this sucks".

uh... alright..

will do...

, though i get the feeling you will sum up their music as "this sucks".

how do you figure? :lol I like quite a bit of shoegaze. Perhaps "sucks" wasn't the right word, but I honestly can't sit through Souvlaki. It's quite overlong and draining. "Souvlaki Space Station," "40 Days," and the aforementioned "Alissson" are excellent though..

yeah...thats uh...the wrong way to go about listening to shoegazer music.
why, pray tell, are you trying to sit through souvlaki?
this stuff is supposed to seep into you, let the music surround you...dont try to analyze it. thats ridiculous.

You know something's wrong with this list when a single artist appears multiple times. And this has several artists appearing multiple times.

Hmm.. I don't know. I think The Bends and Kid A are better than Ok Computer. OKC is overrated IMO. Weezer's blue needs to be on there and the downward spiral #1 :D

I meant I can't get through it in one listen. It just isn't a very compelling album, and it sort of goes on and on... whereas Loveless is absolutely spellbounding.. when I listen to Loveless it's like one long hypnotic drone that guys evelops me and tickles my senses for 50 minutes or however long it is. Souvlaki doesn't do that. I'd much rather listen to a Cocteau Twins record if I wanted that airy, atmospheric stuff.
