[SPOILER THREAD] Suicide Squad

Enchantress was trying to be seductive. That's why she went full WhackyWavingInflatableArmFlailingTubeMan. It was ineffective to say the least and did look silly.

That Batman/Harley scene wasn't CPR. You can't convince me otherwise. It was a makeout session. People were confused in the theater I was in. I literally heard "What...?" I know it was supposed to be CPR. But wow, how did that make the final cut?

The way she was talking throughout the movie didn't suggest, at all, she'd throw that out at the end. Threw me off and seemed really unnecessary..

I thought that was so odd when she said that. She could have at least say something more in her character like "You don't have the rhinestones" or maybe "your manhood is too far beneath you". I don't know, ANYTHING ELSE.

Who was Scott Eastwood's character? Rumors was that he's Dick

He's nobody. Not even sure he has a name.

Edit:

Apparently his name is Lt. GQ Edwards.

Don't think anybody besides Flag really addresses him, not sure Flag even uses his name, and I forgot he was even in the movie until the end.

This is now the second time Ayer has use Scott Eastwood in a next to nothing role.

Saw it today and yeah, it's just fine. Thought it was a fun ride and liked the characters. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Liked BvS more just because of Batman. Was surprised at how much I liked Deashot and Diablo. Poor Slipknot, we hardly knew ye.

Well that wasn't too bad at all. Cast was pretty solid all around. Diablo stole the show. The play between Deadshot and Flag basically carried the movie. Joker and Harley were pretty good, I like the take on them.

Was expecting a trainwreck, got a mediocre summer action movie.

Dat Flash cameo though! Had no idea that was coming. Really liked the movie but really it's the characters/performances that did it for me. Hope we see them again.

This wasn't even as good as Fantastic Four.

I'd put it at Green Lantern and Ghost Rider level. Better than early superhero film stuff like Howard the Duck, Daredevil and like the made for TV superhero movies like Flash or Captain America.

It wasn't all bad, but neither were the movies above, and that certainly doesn't make it any better than "poor", maybe "mediocre" at its best.

Also Leto's Joker having a small amount of screen time was the best thing for the film. Yikes, talk about try hard.

My theater clapped numerous times, and not even like a few people got excited. One clap caused a ripple and made the whole theater clap.

- When the movie was starting and the neon colored logos were popping up
- When Deadshot wiped out the alien soldiers on top of that car
- When Harley took Katana's sword and ripped Enchantress' heart out
- When Dr. Moone hatched from the charred Enchantress cocoon and Flag embraced her.

I'm all for people enjoying an experience but I'll admit, I cringed at least twice out of those 4 times.

And when I was leaving the theater, I saw a little girl (easily younger than 9) in a Harley Quinn patterned costume and dyed hair. It was both strange and adorable.

Can anyone explain to me in detail what made the movie so bad? I watched the movie and don't see how it's really awful like everyone' saying. It's not like Batman v. Superman where editing and things not making sense were it.

What was this movie's deal?

Editing, plot issues, half-baked ideas, uninspired action. The editing issues are more apparent when you see what was cut but the composition of some sequences (all the malarkey with Enchantress getting her brother, then the bomb in the subway then back to her heart being stabbed, her brother doing whatever to her to save her, then just not needing it but then still needing her heart for example); If you try to follow the actions/timelines of some characters and events, things don't make much sense.

The original tone of the movie seemed more like an R-rated dark action film with maybe some light humor. Final cut makes them bad guys who don't seem all that bad, barely any development (which is a testament to the performances because what's there is actually well done and subtle), and just a lot of stuff that feels unfulfilled.

Conceptually and with the performances it could've been a slam dunk that's different than anything else out there, but it's tapered by being just okay with occasional flashes of great.

At the end, the theater erupted in applause where I was. Wasn't expecting it at all and doesn't happen often at this particular theater. I guess those people really enjoyed it lol

The main story, the Joker, the misleading trailers and unpolished final scenes overall left a bad reaction. But characters like Harley, Deadshot and Boomerang did make the movie fun enough. I'd like to see some of them in future DC movies or maybe a Suicide Squad 2.

There was one plot point that truly confused me, so can someone explain it?

What the fuck was that scene with Flag and Enchantress in the subway with that bomb? Like, it either made no sense or I missed something significant cause I don't know if Flag staged it so she could "bolt", or why she activated the bomb right when she left but literally nothing happened.

I don't think she activated it. She just ran away.

Yup.
Flag said his name a single time when he was in the tunnels, thats it.

Warner Bros / DC went above and beyond to essentially change the tone of the entire film. Ayer obviously had a vision for Suicide Squad (best seen in the very first trailer released) but after the feedback of Batman v Superman, the studio got cold feet to commit to the direction, and stepped in (best seen with the second "Bohemian Rhapsody" trailer).

The positive response to that second trailer then pushed the studio to cut the film the same way. The problem is, when you get directors like David Ayer and Zack Snyder, their film making style incorporates their tone / vision as the foundation of the film.

Unfortunately, no amount of editing was going to change the fundamentals, and as a result, Suicide Squad came to be in it's theatrical release.

Word. Batman skipped like 2-3 CPR steps before going mouth-to-mouth. He's either not certified or the directing and editing is fucked.

That ^ doesn't sound all that great.

I'm honestly quite shocked to see so much love in here for the bar scene. When he uttered the "we're nice on the outside, ugly on the inside" line i nearly melted into my seat from cringing so much, not to mention Harley explaining her joke to the audience straight after.

Agreed meng. The writing, more than absolutely anything in this film, obliterated any chance for enjoyment.

It's a character focused film, with no fucking character.

I get that editing bit and was obvious.

What else? I'm actually curious to know what made this movie so hated by almost everyone? Was it just that bit? More examples would be helpful. The movie was pieced together fine and you could understand the motivations for the characters that mattered (sorry croc).

Anyone else catch that weird edit in the final battle when Croc throws Enchantress then looks at his hands, but then 1 cut and half a second later he's totally cool?

Is it really hated? I got the impression that despite the low scores on rotten tomatoes, that comes from rather low to average reviews more than outright disdain

I think a poster in a different thread put it best, I'll quote them here

Agree, I think the reason people ripping into this film pretty hard is that everyone wanted this film to elevate. And it could well have, but the structure of the film is jarringly messy.

For me one of the biggest issues is present right off the bat and that tone: with them sexualizing Harley, and making it uncomfortable and awkward, and then switching to humor. Stuff like that just didn't work as well with the appeal to a large audience including children tone that they clearly wanted, and it felt like 4 or 5 tones colliding. Then you've got stuff like the club scene where she's being pimped out essentially. Then you've got wacky pink unicorn fetish and a cataclysmic world ending threat. Focus was all over the place, but still better than BvS.

Ayer can make some amazing and tense action scenes (End of Watch, Fury), but here the action was largely ho-hum and dull.

Overall the end result was serviceable, but standard and uneventful summer fare when it could've been different

Holy shit so I just remembered that El Diablo ACTUALLY died but I didn't even realize it because it happens and no one talks about it at all afterwards. It just happens and I didn't even notice that he wasn't in the following scenes as the final battle concludes and the movie ends. Man, I really just did not care for any of these characters besides Harley Quinn and Will "Action" Smith.

Just came back for it, overall it was "ehh". 4.5/10, maybe even a 5/10. The movie had its good moments but it definitely had its bad moments too.

I wouldn't call it the atrocity that some reviews labeled it but at the same time I wouldn't argue with anyone who said it was a bad experience.

the camerawork in this movie whenever Margot Robbie was on the screen managed to make Wolf of Wall Street look subtle.
All those ass shots of her walking from the camera started to get more embarrassing each time since that seemed to be the only reason to keep doing the same shot.

What else? I'm actually curious to know what made this movie so hated by almost everyone? Was it just that bit? More examples would be helpful. The movie was pieced together fine and you could understand the motivations for the characters that mattered (sorry croc).

For me personally there wasn't a single good action scene. They all fell flat. The only one I only remotely liked was Diablo vs the big ancient guy, but that was just a CG-fest. I liked a lot of the characters and I liked there banter and dialogue but I want some good action shots. This movie just didn't deliver on that front.

And while I really like Harley, Waller, Deadshot, Diablo and Boomerang I felt like Katana, Croc, and Flag were just dead weight. About two sentences for Katana the entire movie, and there was so little Croc i questioned why he was in the movie at all. The romance between Flag and the girl who becomes Enchantress just didn't work for me at all. Speaking of which Enchantress looked really stupid as hell twitching around, and her army was the dumbest cannon fodder bullshit I've seen in a while. The fact that they just kind of broke apart without bleeding seemed tailor made for a PG-13 movie. I can't even muster an opinion on the Joker because he was barely in the movie.

Also the editing felt weird. The Joker/Harley flashbacks just felt like they were thrown in at random, and I didn't like them. Harley falling into that vat? Didn't understand what that was about. The black guy talking to Joker and Harley hitting on him, I have no idea what that scene was supposed to be.

The structure of the movie felt weird to me. Everything was fine up until the mission started (although as I said before I wanted way more backstory for Croc and Katana, and more Boomerang stuff too) and then once they get into the city it just felt incoherent. We're going to rescue some high value target, Oh wait the target is Waller, alright now we have to go fight Enchantress, oh wait Enchantress has Waller, also Joker comes in and gets Harley but then his Helicopter crashes so Harley's just back with the team again. Also Boomerang bolts after the bar scene and then is there with them again. I just felt like they "mission" wasn't very coherent, which wouldn't be a problem if it was all just one big excuse for awesome action scene after awesome action scene, but as I said before the action just sucked.

And the music, oh god the music. 10 seconds of some song that's only there to be extremely on the nose. Cringe worthy music use. (like when Harley was in the elevator)

Wow that was long winded. To sum my feelings up, this is a bad action movie with great characters. If I can get Deadshot, Harley, Waller, and Boomerang in a good movie then that would be great because those were some great performances, but instead they're stuck in this movie which was just bland.

This could have been The Raid with comic villains. Think about how awesome that would have been.

Someone pointed it out earlier either in this thread or the review thread, but yeah I think this movie could have been rated R. It's definitely borderline PG-13. With some of the deleted scenes added, it would probably be R.

Yeah, he even seems to sacrifice himself for the team and no one even says a word. This right after he tells them his sad story and tells them he won't let anothet family die.

Meanwhile Waller says Harley and Joker are dead after they tried to kill everyone with a minigun on a helicopter and the whole team is standing around with tears in their eyes. lol

Lol, el diablo is like that guy who treats people he knows as his bff easily, while everyone is just treating him as an acquaintance

Well IIRC, he did get a scene where he argues with someone to just detonate the bomb and they are all "No, you'll die!" but then you don't see him get blasted (could be an out to bring him back) and I don't remember anyone reacting after the fact.

The whole final scene felt weird like it was reshoots though, since a lot of the team didn't have much to do the whole fight, so maybe it was more due to them stapling together scenes.

I thought the last line in the scene between Bruce and Amanda Waller was:

"Pack it up. Or my friends will."

Sound mix was shit in this film.

So glad I didn't spend money on it, thank you T-Mo.

Just came back. I enjoyed it. The general plot and dialog was boilerplate as fuck, the pacing was really weird, opening of the movie felt out of wack, and the soundtrack got a bit too obnoxious for for my tastes, but despite all that it was actually an OK movie. Not really bad, not really great, but it was fun and I had a nice time. I felt the reviews were a bit too over the top with their hatred. It was not that bad.

With that said, you can really tell DC/WB is struggling with how they're managing productions for these movies. This movie rushed this movie into production and it shows. A lot of the ideas and characters feel a bit undercooked, which results in scenes and exposition that feels a bit unearned. The scene with El Diablo referring to the squad as his family was out of nowhere. They couldn't have bonded that quickly. With that said, I'm absolutely down for another SS movie. If they've got more Harley, Deadshot, and Joker, I'm good.

I thought the same thing. My girlfriend said he was trying to do CPR, but my immediate reaction was "WTF, Batman is a perv who kisses unconscious Harley Quinn now?"

I didn't like the movie overall, thought it was pretty mediocre, but enjoyed it more than BvS.

Other random stuff:
  • My theater had what sounded like 12-year-old boys behind me explaining stuff while crinkling candy wrappers, AND a baby several rows forward making happy baby calls.
  • Captain Boomerang was so useless. It's a good thing he didn't get much of a reward at the end. I guess he was supposed to be the comic relief, but I was kind of hoping he didn't come back after the bar scene. Nope, next scene he was back for the slow motion dramatic walk.
  • Enchantress was a really anticlimactic final boss. She's got this world-destroying power, she can literally teleport across the entire globe to grab stuff, and her solution is to...teleport into melee range and try to swordfight people. It's like a bad fighting game player.
  • I feel like the entire final fight was covered in smoke. Not dramatic, stylish smoke, just...smoke. And rain, and particles, and stuff. It was pretty obscuring.
  • I really didn't like Jared Leto's take on Joker. Awkward, jarring, and kind of all over. On the bright side, Harley and Deadshot were pretty great.
  • What was the point of Waller murdering all the FBI guys? Were they not supposed to know about Enchantress getting loose, or the Suicide Squad existing? Why were they there anyway if it was a secret mission? Couldn't Waller get some henchmen of appropriate clearance? Won't killing them make other henchmen leery of working near her?
  • Speaking of that Waller mission, who was the unkillable HVT or whatever they were supposed to rescue? Was that all a complete fabrication to get them near the two demons? Why was there a command center NEAR the demon site instead of further away?
  • Joker looks like he dies, twice, and then reappears perfectly fine with no explanation. I guess this is a long-running habit for Joker because people don't like killing him off, but I thought it would have been a bolder move for him to stay dead after the helicopter, and Harley to adapt to the new team.
  • I had no clue what the credits scene book was about. After checking, turns out that they were Enchantress, Flash, and Aquaman.

He deactivated it right away when she gave it to him and bolted, to which Scott Eastwood goes and rearms (one second left). I think this shit was added in reshoots tho because why would Flag leave that bomb there after the fact? lol unattended bomb for 3 days or whatever they said it was

All that hullabaloo and that's the Joker we're gonna get out of Leto, huh? I want to remain excited for the Batman solo flick but this shit ain't gonna cut it if they just bring him back exactly as he was in this. Yeesh.

Smith and Robbie carried that movie. It would've so much worse than it is without them.

I had the same problem (and also used a free T-Mobile ticket). Fight / sound effects were uncomfortably loud, yet I kept missing words. It was especially bad with Croc's and Boomerang's accents.

El Diablo was a better character and got more screentime and development than I was expecting. At this point DC's actually beating marvel in 1 thing, Hispanic representation. Marvel still doesn't have a single Hispanic character.

You didn't like the mexican dumb thief whose father was deported? Fun!

So suicide squad 2 happens and they replace Slipknot and El Diablo. Who do you guys pick for new team members?
I guess Enchantress also needs to be replaced.
