[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I loved the movie, but damn that evil empire that literally commits genocide that would make Ghengis Kahn look twice is extremely incompetent at interrogating people. I mean it is PG-13 so they aren't going to be smashing nuts on screen but at least why not try some water boarding lol.

Exactly, lol.

His character was ruined the moment he took off the helmet. He's a joke now. People were literally laughing when that happened.

It humanised him in a massive way, he wasn't the big bad anymore, he was a confused boy that was little more than a pawn in a much larger chessboard

I do have to say one thing that bothers me about Finn:

He literally goes from "I am shocked by this fellow stormtrooper bleeding out and touching me and all the death around me happening" to "I will shoot these Tie Fighter lasers into big piles of my former comrades, many of whom I have spent every day since I was a kid with.

It doesn't really matter in any way,it's a movie, but I did kinda have it in the back of my head as the scenes happened.

It will be kinda disappointing if no other storm trooper ever get to take off their helmet and the 'heroes' just keep killing them without questioning how many of them could be Finn.

I will echo the enjoyment of stormtroopers being more humanized as a positive.
I felt it added a lot to the movie.

The stormtrooper that died and caressed Finn's face with his bloody hand, presumably a chum.

The best instance, the stormtrooper who yells out "Traitor!", also presumably an acquaintance at least, and then intensely clashes with Finn for the best fight a stormtrooper has had.

The two stormtroopers who carefully backed away as Kylo Ren wrecked his own consoles.

The stormtroopers who stopped their investigation to watch Han and Ben have a nice chat on a poorly guarded walkway.

It was so lively!

I remember as a kid one of my favorite parts of ANH was the banter between those 2 Stormtroopers on the Death Star. I was like 8 (35 now) and I have never understood why I was so drawn to it. I liked 'splosions and TIE Fighters at that age so it was odd that I would be so drawn to 2 Stormtroopers talking about the new BT-16.

I agree.

Torn Apart is such a great track, especially the first minute or so. It's just incredibly sincere and heartbreaking. While you know what's coming, that scene and music just make you consider the slimmest possibility for a second that Ben/Kylo wants to or can be saved.
Yep. Possibly my favourite track. It gives me chills every time.

Okay so regarding Rey...

Based on the speculation and expectations in this thread including my very own, here's how I think her story could play out in VIII. This also includes some stuff I already mentioned earlier.

- As implied by the ending, we'll get to see her being trained by Luke to become a Jedi. Basically it'll be next gen Luke and Yoda. However here's the catch: whereas Yoda trained Luke to take out his recklessness, Rey goes through the opposite. Given her exceptional prowess in 7, she instead gets cockier and more overconfident as she further hones her skill. Basically, all those Mary Sue accusations? She eats it all up. Naturally, Luke warns her against this but she insists that it won't get the better of her.

- Eventually, Rey would also go through her own equivalent of Luke's cave moment. Only, instead of a ghost battle like Luke, we instead get a way more expanded flashback of what she sees at Maz's. Here, we find out that Rey's parents are killed by a young Kylo Ren+Knights but not before they leave Rey on Jakku to protect her due to the Order's witch hunt. After finding this out, Rey becomes burning with anger. She's wants blood - not is Ren responsible for her family's death, it would also make him responsible for her 15 years of isolation. Naturally, Luke condemns this kind of action and warns her about how he fucked up due to impulse decisions in his training. Rey immediately understands and relents...for now.

- Sometime later on in the film, Rey and Luke suspend training and join up with everyone else for whatever perilous climactic 3rd Act mission the film can demand. Whatever that mission is, Kylo Ren is involved. Anyways blah blah good guys succeed in solving said mission. BUT let's say Rey sees Ren fleeing the scene at the end of the mission. At first Rey could show some self-control, trying to walk away....but in the spur of the moment, goes 'FUCK IT', hops on a speeder, and goes after Ren.

- Both Kylo and Rey meetup in some very isolated location and here we get RenVsRey Part II. Unlike then, Rey gets a lot more trouble this time with Ren having further trained now. Despite this, Rey comes out on top and has Ren on the defensive. Eventually she gets in a position where she can finish him until...

- Surprise! The rest of the Knights of Ren also show up for the fun. With her incomplete training, exhaustion from a more hardened Kylo, and the clear numerical handicap, Rey proceeds to get beaten the living shit out of her to the point of near death.
But to her luck, the rest of the gang arrives to help her and it turns into an all out team battle. However, in the process two main characters lose their lives. One could be Finn or BB8 - the fact is they are close to her - and the other is Luke, who could totally pull his Kenobi sacrifice moment right here. That plus the faceless Resistance casualties included in the fighting. The good guys eventually escape by the skin of their teeth.

- After Rey recovers later on, she realize how much she just fucked up due to her overconfidence and anger. Not only does she get wrecked, it cost her the people she cares for. It's basically Yodas warning to Luke fulfilled 3 movies late. Thus at the end of the film, we see her set on her own to complete her training/Jedi pilgrimage (with maybe off-screen ghost Luke, a la QuiGon) for some soul searching. Cut to black. End.

Well, that was my fanfic moment. What do you think?

Yeah pretty much what I would expect, but I think someone would get captured at the end, either Rey or Finn.

My guess would be Rey kills Kylo, and falls to the dark side outright. Finn picks it up from here and he's the one who will have "the duel" at the end of IX against Rey. Him trying to bring Rey back to her senses, and both defeating Snoke together or something.

They could take it the expected way like you described, but I think it would be a nice twist.

they only failed at Rey. He actually was successful with Poe.

I think this is where having three films to play this out over will help. I get the sense, from the film and from Abrams, etc. that they have a lot of story and backstory to unpack, and deciding how much to put in TFA was a bit of a struggle. We can see that in this film, but I think it will come together by time we see the full story.

I agree that they have a lot of narrative and backstory to unpack and it was tough for them to tie together the old films while not giving the new characters short shrift. But the fact that the writers don't even know what Rey's backstory IS, well that's worrisome. Have they even decided if Rey is a Skywalker or a Kenobi or someone else? Hearing them say that, it feels like they don't really know what the dynamics are going forward, other than she is strong with the Force and will probably square off with Kylo again.

"I do not care that millions/billions of people lose their lives unless you tell me why I should care about them"

bravo *claps*

Exactly; only I would say it in a less dismissive and rudely sarcastic manner.

The characters barely seemed to care, why should I? Then again, they also barely seemed to care about Han's death too...

Yeah, I think this could be interesting too. It has a nice "everyman" theme to it - you don't have to have mad Force skills to save the Galaxy.

Hmm.. no one in my four showings was literally laughing.

His character without the mask is fine. I blame modern hollywood on giving every leading/major part to a pretty boy.

Yeah, I didn't experience any laughter either, and honestly, he's not a pretty kid.

Either way, his mask needed to be off. The scene with Han on the bridge was moving because of his acting, his facial expressions, and the tears in his eyes. And seeing his face helps to express his personality. I think people just want Kylo Ren to be something the writers didn't create him to be. But eh, it was the same shit with the prequels. A movie ain't never gonna be everything everyone wants it to be.

Gee, there was no need to reply to that list of prequel-nitpicks, I just copy-pasted it from the source I stated.
You require external sources (that were created afterwards) or convoluted explanations like "the character is lying" to provide reasons for most of these (obvious) contradictions. Ever heard of Occams razor? The simplest theory is usually correct: Most/all of these problems are errors, due to bad writing. Lucas fucked up, plain and simple. That's all there is to it.
I find the way you refuse to admit that Lucas wasn't infallible a bit scary. The same kind of thinking allows people to cling to religious dogma even if it cleary clashes with reality and hinders human progress.

I absolutely love Kylo Ren as a villain. I love that he will grow as the heroes do. I love that he threw temper tantrums when he didn't get his way. I love that he was intimidating but not SUPER ULTIMATE PERFECT BADASS Darth Vader. He has flaws, he makes mistakes, he's really trying his hardest and it shows.

I liked the movie a lot. I think it relied a little too much on nostalgia and I think it would have been a better movie set 100+ years in the future where the heroes of the OT were distant legends, but it was a very good movie.

For me, probably V > IV > VII > VI > III > II > I

You know, what ever did happen to Obi Wan's lightsaber after Vader cut him down? I wonder will it can make an potential appearance in the future movies.

Just got back from the theater.

Thought it was a very respectful reboot, even though im not really convinced Episode 4 needed a reboot.

Seriously did Kasdan just copy/paste the script from A New Hope and swap the names?

"Its the Death Star... but bigger!"

You don't have to insult someone's memory because you don't know the canon
Well thats just it isn't it? You're relying on decades of post movie material to fill in the gaps. In the new Star Wars the EU has been wiped and there has been little released from around the period of the EP7. The answers will come eventually, y'all are just impatient.

I thought it was a great parallel to the fact that Vader didn't have the mask off until his last moments with Luke, meanwhile Ren takes it off casually when Rey asks.

Wow...answering this was sad ):, I´m not really proud of all this SW knowledge.

For people constantly claiming that OT questions don't need answers you sure make a lot of questions

I read all of it. Kudos to you and your effort.

Also, I believe Jedi Knights take in padawans as well, in order to obtain the title of master when the padawan gets knighted.

I also think that the penultimate fight in this trilogy will be Finn v Rey and the last fight is Finn+Rey v Snoke.

Ren will be killed start-mid Episode 9

Nope, just the 7 movies and 2 TV series. The current canon.

The decades old EU is no longer canon

I don't have much of a problem with the unanswered questions in 7 actually, what got me a bit was the repeats. I still LOVED the movie with my whole heart

They are not gonna have the only major female jedi fall to the dark side.

Stop suggesting it. It's not gonna happen.

Just saw it. Was smiling the whole time. Such a fun movie.

So did the First Order blow up Coruscant and a handful of other Republic planets? That's crazy.

Also, yes, Poe Dameron was incredible and I would prefer a movie starring him 1000x over the Han Solo and Boba Fett ones we are getting (we are getting these, right? So pointless)
