[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Gee, there was no need to reply to that list of prequel-nitpicks, I just copy-pasted it from the source I stated.
You require external sources (that were created afterwards) or convoluted explanations like "the character is lying" to provide reasons for most of these (obvious) contradictions. Ever heard of Occams razor? The simplest theory is usually correct: Most/all of these problems are errors, due to bad writing. Lucas fucked up, plain and simple. That's all there is to it.
I find the way you refuse to admit that Lucas wasn't infallible a bit scary. The same kind of thinking allows people to cling to religious dogma even if it cleary clashes with reality and hinders human progress.

How the fuck is "the character is lying" a convoluted explanation? The OT itself establishes that Obi Wan was giving bullshit explanations or playing on technicalities all the time.

And the last part of your post is whiny, completely unnecessary and downright lame. C'mon...

ANH had less than a minute of it.

Prequels had like 15-20 minutes of it combined.

Huge difference.

Also the lines in ANH were delivered with throwaway importance. In the prequels the lines were given major focus in the scenes.
My imagination filled-in the gaps when Obi Wan Kenobi mentioned the Clone Wars.

Exactly, lol.

His character was ruined the moment he took off the helmet. He's a joke now. People were literally laughing when that happened.
No one in my theatre laughed.

And my daughter had a telling smirk on her face when he unmasked himself. 🙄

Just saw it. Was smiling the whole time. Such a fun movie.

So did the First Order blow up Coruscant and a handful of other Republic planets? That's crazy.

No, but whatever they blew up was considered the New Republic capital so same idea.

However, apparently the Republic rotates their capitals on some basis that I'm unclear of.

Nope, just the 7 movies and 2 TV series. The current canon.

The decades old EU is no longer canon

Thats what I said, you're relying on everything that is still canon thats come out since ANH to fill in the gaps of the movies. 6 movies and hundreds of tv episodes.

We are in a new period of the timeline and there is little to flesh out what information we were given. It will come eventually.

I also think that the penultimate fight in this trilogy will be Finn v Rey and the last fight is Finn+Rey v Snoke.

Ren will be killed start-mid Episode 9

Or Finn + Rey defeat next-level-Kylo, and Luke destroys the Force to prevent Jedi and Sith from manipulating the force ever again :O

People uncomfortable with seeing a real creep be really creepy without any Hollywood bullshit mitigating it.

I like it.

"He doesn't even look like a real bad guy. He looks like me when I'm taking my Star Wars cosplay super serioushheeyyyy wait a minute..."

Just got back from the theater.

Thought it was a very respectful reboot, even though im not really convinced Episode 4 needed a reboot.

Seriously did Kasdan just copy/paste the script from A New Hope and swap the names?

"Its the Death Star... but bigger!"

I'm not really sure why you would even need a weapon that can blow up a solar system

I mean most solar systems don't even have a habitable planet. Most of them that do only have one habitable planet. Why not just build a Death Star and blow up the one planet? If you were trying to destroy Earth why would you destroy Mars, Mercury, and Venus?

I admit that I thought they blew up Coruscant based on the building they showed. I had to come to GAF for someone to tell me what the real planet was.

They're bad guys.

So does that mean Finn is a force user? Only force users can use lightsabers right?

im not that well versed in star wars lore dnt kill me pls

He was trained from birth to be a Stormtrooper and has that melee weapon fight with the trooper when they attack the castle. I presumed, therefore, that Stormtroopers are trained in hand to hand and melee weapon combat.

I imagine that the force helps. I don't see Finn deflecting any blaster bolts, for example, but he can use it as a simple laser sword.

People too used to star wars being video games or fanfics for all this time

Was great, just a few nitpicks.

1.) Soundtrack was really forgettable, one of the weakest SW soundtracks so far.

2.) Snoke, err just seemed out of place, looked awful, and they left so much unknown about him. Really would have preferred they kept him more hidden till they would give a better reveal along with more solid background.

3.) Starkiller base. They really don't explain well it's capabilities... yea it blows up some planets, but they really don't give a good indication of what kind of range the weapon has. It's built into an actual planet? So it's not mobile? It doesn't need to be mobile? With how long it takes to use, wouldn't it just be a giant target for a fleet or ships to take out, seeing as the First Order apparently had one ship in orbit to protect it?

It's so odd that 3 of 4 Villains don't seem interesting or menacing in anyway.

1)Captain Phasma never fires her gun and has like four lines throughout the film. She just gives up to Finn, Chewie and Han at gun point with no action to escape or resist. I really don't know what they're going to do with character. She can't magically turn into a badass because wondering where that was last time.

2) General Hux doesn't really leave much of a impression on you. I guess he's suppose to be a Tarkin type but doesn't have that ruthlessness that Peter Cushing brought.

3) Supreme Leader Snoke is kinda a typical one note villain that sits in his big chair and tells his lackeys to do stuff. Not unlike the emperor in the OT but it's kinda disappointing they didn't dive deeper into his relationship with Kylo or his motives. He also didn't look great or have a particularly interesting design.

Ben is like those people that open carry with their guns and hang outside of Mosques to intimidate people. They haven't fought in a real war or anything like that.

It's like people forget that the political talk in A New Hope was done in less than in a minute.

A brief moment of contextual dialogue for the galactic situation would not have hurt this movie.

Man I love Tarkin. He's so so so much better than the new commander and his trying-to-channel Hitler speeches. And this scene does a much better job setting up the status of the conflict than anything in TFA. There are details that are kept vague, but hint at just enough of the political situation to make things understanding. I find Abrams' lack of faith in the audience disturbing.

I also think that the penultimate fight in this trilogy will be Finn v Rey and the last fight is Finn+Rey v Snoke.

Ren will be killed start-mid Episode 9

I think it works better by Ren being killed at the end of VIII, and Rey fleeing afterwards, leaving this cliffhanger with us wondering what will happen to her.

But in IX she's unable to defeat him, he makes her realize she has already lost everything/you failed your training/Luke and Han died because of you/without me you will destroy yourself/, etc. and kind of succeeds until Finn shows up and brings her to her sense or something. Finn didn't use the lightsaber for nothing, it's so he can use it again at the end :)

That was one of my favorite scenes, even as a kid, even outside of the Vader choke, because it gave us more detail on the war. It was great worldbuilding, and it turned out to be a pivotal moment for the new Marvel comics actually since the entire reason for Tagge being promoted after the Battle of Yavin was what he said at that meeting.

Different people have different opinions about what is interesting. I could read an entire book about Coruscant court politics all day and I'd probably enjoy it more than random Han Solo adventure #56. I know I'm in the minority about that, but that doesn't really matter to me. I still feel like TFA would have benefitted from giving us more insight into Hosnian Prime so that its destruction actually meant something.

At least you recognize you're in the minority.

Didn't Marvel publish a line of comics, and there were a few novels released this summer, specifically to give nerds all these details so they didn't have to cover those bases in the movie?

they only failed at Rey. He actually was successful with Poe.

But they did a terrible job of guarding him. When Finn frees Poe the other Stormtrooper doesn't even question it. In ANH when they try to pass off Chewie as a prisoner transfer, the Imperial Officers doesn't buy it decides to verify it and there are quite a few Imperials in the cell block. You also have Finn and Poe walking past a ton of FO people and none of them double take at the most valuable prisoner on the ship?

Agree with others saying Snoke was the worst part of the movie. The giant projection was dumb and I didn't like his look. Felt too over the top, would have preferred for him to just be a voice of something. Reveal his form when Ren goes to complete Sith training in VIII.

That being said, I love Ren as a villain. Unhinged, creepy, moments of pure badassery, surprisingly well done overall.

Bobby where your review at? I'd love to read your thoughts on the movie

it was a short 300 worder for print, and you've probably picked up on most of the points through conversation here.

Basically, it's a very pretty mashup/mixtape of the entire Original Trilogy, with interesting new interpretations of classic Star Wars characterizations and moments, lacking the emotional punch it's reaching for, but setting a very nice table for Rian Johnson to eat from, so the future of the series can go in an interesting place.

It's essentially a slightly lesser Star Wars movie than Star Trek 09 was.

They shoulda just had Giacchino score it.

So does that mean Finn is a force user? Only force users can use lightsabers right?

And I thought they smelled bad on the outside.

Very disappointed indeed.

lol

wasn't the Resistance on Yavin?

why didn't they blow up Yavin

Your memory must work like Lukas' then.

2 - AOTC/ROTS: All stormtroopers are clones of Jango Fett. OT: they have different heights and different voices... none of them sound like Temura Morrison.
Sure, Clones probably still exist but were mostly phased out and replaced with real soldiers, this is canon now

3 - Size of the Clone Army. AOTC: States 1.2 million "units." By the OT, how can there be enough Stormtroopers to patrol the Galaxy if it takes 10 years to grow them and they age at 2x the normal rate?
Real troopers began taking over. This isn't hard to figure out. And a "unit" is likely more than just one Clone Trooper. Each unit could be a whole squad or battalion

4 - How can Leia remember her real mother (ROTJ), if not only was she born AFTER her twin Luke (ROTS), but Padme died in childbirth?
Or is she talking about Bail Organa's wife?

5 - When did Obi-Wan Kenobi serve Bail Organa during the Clone Wars? (ANH)
Clone Wars, many things happened. Bail was around during those times, and they worked together at the fall.

6 - Design of the Tantive IV (name not stated in movie, but Captain Antilles's ship), how does it change so radically in 20 years? (ROTS vs. ANH)
Does Antilles get a new / different ship of the same class? Hard to know

7 - Why doesn't R2D2 remember the past 20 years?
I think it's implied R2 does know, but is a special droid that keeps things to himself.

8 - Why did Ben Kenobi forget about Leia (ESB vs. ROTS)?
He hadn't forgotten in ROTJ, so *shrug*

9 - When did Anakin demonstrate that he was "already a great pilot" when Obi-Wan "first knew him"? (ROTJ vs. TPM)
He won the podrace.

10 - When did Owen show any disagreement with Anakin, to the extent described by Obi-Wan? (ANH vs. AOTC/ROTS)
Didn't necessarily see this. I feel like Obi-Wan and Owen's relationship was probably largely post ROTS.

11 - Why does Yoda say that Jedi never use the Force for attack, but only 'knowledge and defense', and why does he disparage war/warriors? (ESB vs. AOTC/ROTS)
Probably because of exactly what happened in AOTC

12 - Why was Luke "hidden" on Anakin's home planet, at the homestead of the family his mother married into and his last name not changed? (ROTS vs. ANH)
Hiding in plain site in a place too painful for Vader to search/return to?

13 - Why doesn't Chewie react to Han Solo's bad-mouthing of the Jedi and the Force? (ANH vs. ROTS)
*shrug*

14 - Why doesn't R2D2 ever use his rocket boosters again? (AOTC/ROTS)
*shrug*

15 - Why did the first Death Star take twenty years to build, while the second, larger and more powerful station, was built in 1-3 years? (ROTS vs. ROTJ)
They were under construction at the same time?

16 - When was it shown that Anakin was a "good man" and a "good friend" before he turned to the Dark Side? (ROTS vs. ANH/ROTJ)
The Clone Wars. And in AOTC/ROTS both of them reference it.

17 - Why did Obi-Wan refer to Yoda as "The Jedi Master who instructed me" when he was instructed by Qui Gon Jinn? (TPM vs. ESB)
Because Obi-Wan obviously got much instruction from Yoda after the death of Qui-Gon? This is seen in all three prequel films.

18 - Why does Yoda moan about Luke being "too old to begin the training" when Obi-Wan had no problem with it, and supposedly Yoda thought 9 year old Anakin was "too old"? (TPM vs. ANH/ESB)
This doesn't make a lot of sense given that he's there last hope. But I like to think Yoda has become slightly senile at this point, living onDagobah alone.

19 - What happened to Jar Jar Binks?
Does it matter?

20 - (Special Editions) Why does anyone on Tatooine care when the Empire falls?
why not?

21 - Why does Obi-Wan wear his Jedi uniform "in hiding" on Tatooine? (ANH vs. TPM/AOTC/ROTS)
I do agree it's weird that desert nomad clothese became the jedi outfit. But again, Kenobi is hiding out.

22 - What happened to all the battle droids?
Sidious ordered Anakin to have them all de-activated immediately when he terminated the Separatist leaders. Probably scrapped by the empire.

23 - Why isn't Luke able to stop the Emperor's lightning attack and why doesn't Yoda at least show him how to counter it? (ROTJ vs. AOTC/ROTS)
I sort of think Yoda never expected Luke to defeat the Emperor. The goal was for Luke to turn Vader back - as Vader could defeat the Emperor

24 - If there are only always ever two Sith "no more, no less... a master and an apprentice" (TPM) why does Vader recommend that Luke could be turned into a "powerful ally" and the Emperor agrees he would be a "great asset"? (TPM vs. ESB)
Emperor getting cocky? Emperor assuming Vader would be killed off if Luke was more powerful / Vader assuming he and Luke could overthrow the Emperor

25 - Why do Obi-Wan, Anakin, Owen and Beru appear so old if only 18-20 years have past since we last saw them? (ANH/ROTJ vs. ROTS)
Sort of the paradox of Luke/Leia being their ages in general. That Tatooine sun man!

26 - Why doesn't Admiral Motti seem aware of the reality of the Force and the power of those who wield it? (PT vs. ANH)
Lack of Jedi / Sith attributes being seen, Vader has failed to deliver multiple times. Overconfidence in the station

27 - What happened to the Imperial military in those two decades that they lost nearly all their hardware and technology? (ROTS vs. OT)
What technology was lost? They still have destroyers, fighters, etc?

28 - Why doesn't Obi-Wan recognize the droids? (ANH vs. PT)
Tons of droids in the universe.

29 - Why doesn't Owen Lars recognize the droids? (ANH vs. AOTC)
Same

30 - Why don't Luke or Leia ever find out that R2D2 knows everything about their past?
R2 plays coy a lot. This is somewhat valid though

31 - Why doesn't Qui Gon Jinn appear as a spirit at the end of ROTJ? (see AOTC/ROTS)
Luke didn't know him

32 - If one has to be "trained" to become a spirit after death, when did Anakin ever learn it? (ROTS vs. ROTJ)
Could've been something that happened off-screen during his redemption. Obi-Wan or Yoda speaking directly to him.

33 - When did Anakin express the desire for his son to have his lightsaber when he was "old enough" (and if the Jedi are trained from birth, does that mean as a toddler? but since the Jedi aren't allowed to have children... then what?)?
I think Obi-Wan is assuming this and telling / lying to Luke about it

34 - How many Wars were there? Why does Yoda refer to it as "the Clone War" instead of the "Clone WarS" (plural)? (AOTC vs. ANH)
Minor speaking difference

35 - Why does Ben refer to Vader as "Darth" if that is a Sith title rather than a personal name? (see ANH)
Why do people refer to Obi-Wan or Anakin as just"Jedi" instead of using their names?

36 - Was Vader really "but the learner" when he "left" Obi-Wan? (ANH vs. ROTS)
Well, Obi-Wan defeated him at that point soooo yeah

37 - Did Obi-Wan really stop going by that name (and start going by the name "Ben") "before" Luke was born? (ANH vs. ROTS)"
around that time. Pretty close at least

lots of ticky tacky shit in that list. You can easily imagine explanations to most of it.

Gee, there was no need to reply to that list of prequel-nitpicks, I just copy-pasted it from the source I stated.

Nobody is "refusing to admit that Lucas wasn't infallible". It's just that Star Wars canon is a living thing, not something set in stone between 1977 - 1983, so retcons (which have been at the bedrock of the franchise since Vader suddenly became Luke's father) are valid and fair to use to explain away canonicity issues. Retcons are fun.

We're just explaining why the PT and OT can both be canon.

Regarding your Rey turning darkside theory, how bleak would it be to end this trilogy with a Rey vs Finn lightsaber duel?

I'm not really sure why you would even need a weapon that can blow up a solar system

I mean most solar systems don't even have a habitable planet. Most of them that do only have one habitable planet. Why not just build a Death Star and blow up the one planet? If you were trying to destroy Earth why would you destroy Mars, Mercury, and Venus?

The whole thing just struck me as been there done that.

Desert planet, find droid, escape planet, major planet destroyed by Death Star, rebels rally, Force is strong in this one, sith guy kills new Jedi's mentor, trench run to blow up Death Star, Sith guy narrowly escapes... i get they wanted to go for a ANH vibe, but its almost exactly the same story beats. They even went to a damn cantina.

Exactly; only I would say it in a less dismissive and sarcastic way.

The characters barely seemed to care, why should I? Then again, they also barely seemed to care about Han's death too...

From a galactic perspective losing a planet would be like losing a city. They really didn't have time to mourn, they had to go after the base. My guess is they are saving the aftermath of that for the next movie. I mean the first death star had many thousands of people on it and no one gave a damn.

As for Han, Leia reacted, but it was odd that upon returning, Chewie didn't. I don't think it defies explanation though. I think they were trying to avoid making the first act depressing. As with everything else, the journey continues.

At least you recognize you're in the minority.

Didn't Marvel publish a line of comics, and there were a few novels released this summer, specifically to give nerds all these details so they didn't have to cover those bases in the movie?

No, Marvel published a bunch of comics that take place after EP IV. There's been one Marvel comic and one novel that deal with the immediate aftermath of ROTJ but nothing that sheds light on what's going on 30 years later.

I always thought Rey's staff had some kind of energy capabilities. Guess it really is just a stick.

However I hope this means Rey builds herself a dual bladed saber. Darth Maul style. Always been a sweet looking blade.

It's so odd that 3 of 4 Villains don't seem interesting or menacing in anyway.

They used their screentime to create 1 really interesting villain instead of 4 somewhat interesting ones. Which I think was a good choice. Snoke is like the Emperor, almost invisible in ANH, but will get more prominent. Phasma just looks cool, but supposedly has a big role in Ep.8.

It was baffling. This movie had generally fantastic "alien" design and yet Snoke was completely boring.
