[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Not open for further replies.
Luke's a new kind of Jedi, that learned to use the force without having to follow the strict rules of the Jedi order.
Seeing as "forbidden love" was a contributing factor to Anakin's downfall, i think, even the last 2 remaining Jedi, would agree that the 'forbidden' part was the problem here, not the 'love'.

Had Anakin been able to talk to Obiwan about his nightmares "dude, i'm afraid my wife will die!" and have Obiwan support him "we're not going to let that happen, also these visions aren't necessary premonitions of what WILL happen but what just MIGHT happen. Still, you have my support, Anakin"
There. Problem solved.

I don't know. Luke changing the rules for his own benefit and then abandoning his daughter as a scavenger on a far away planet? The idea that Luke is both a corrupt Jedi and an awful father makes me hate this theory.

Luke himself being abandoned makes this crazy, as it is known that the children who suffered because of their parents try very hard not to repeat the same mistakes.

they even say as much when Maz says "that's a story for another time"

That line annoyed me as it reminds me this from Mass Effect 3.

Say, ends up having some sort of relationship with a smuggler/trader, events happen and he thinks she's dead, meanwhile she leaves and raises a child who ends up becoming one of Reys parents.

Would also make for a helluva potential sidestory movie and a chance for Ewan Mcgregor to step back into the role.

There's simply no way McGregor could come back in the role in a main series Star Wars episode, the Star Wars storyline structure simply does not allow for flashbacks.

J.J. Abrams explains R2-D2's closing scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“The whole movie is a series of character introductions,” says Arndt, who help craft the story before Kasdan and Abrams penned the script. “You want all your character introductions to be A-plus. You want to give each person their moment. Even the Millennium Falcon. That was [producer] Bryan Burk’s idea. They’re running to get a ship, it blows up, and you turn and there’s the back-up – the Millennium Falcon.”

The producer sticking his oar into the writing process explains a lot, especially the plot contrivance of having the falcon be there for no good reason.

Never said it would be mainline. We're getting Rogue One and a supposed Han Solo movie, and a rumored Obi-Wan solo movie has been in the works too.

You'd rather sit through an expose that details the political jousts that led to the rise of the First Order, trade boycotts and all?

I goddamn would, gladly, but i acknowledge i'm in the minority.
Counting on books&comics to bridge those gaps properly.

I'm still down with the idea that Luke planted the Falcon and max von sydow plays a big role in watching over Rey. I refuse to believe they brought him on for 1 scene. Expecting lots of flashbacks next movie.

They literally have a flashback in TFA

That too, lol bit I'm referring more to something along the lines of the now non-canon Obi-Wan novel.

Basically the exploits of Obi-Wan on Tatooine. Could even break it up with him having to travel off world to destroy some evidence of the twins birth like in the story.

Dude, what's with the negative connotation about Luke being a more modern, less dogmatized Jedi?

are you calling Luther & protestants 'Corrupt Christians' just because protestant priests are allowed to have a family?
He wouldn't be changing the rules for his own benefit, he'd be wisely decluttering the Jedi dogma of rules that were a bad idea to begin with, because those rules created a bunch of emotionless, sexless monks that called a lightsaber 'their life'.

most people thought they liked the phantom menace at first though, even indy 4 went down well enough at first. it takes a while for these things to settle.

episode vii is about on a par with prometheus personally.

Yikes. Yeah I think I'm out of this thread for good. I won't let Gaf spoil Christmas

These are the ones that matters. Aftermath will be a trilogy apparently.

There's also that upcoming C3PO comic which I think will detailing about his red arm.

Before the Awakening is a book, not a comic.

I found the Rey part very good, now getting through Poe - not as good, but decent.

i wouldn't say that.

They'd call male "Ray" a Mary Sue, too.
I think it's just people forgetting that - after prequels that made "the force" something very ... scientific. Something you train, something you carry in your blood. etc - we're now back to the force being literally space magic. And if you channel said space magic, you're able to do things that you haven't learned.
Just look at "well, why is she able to overpower Kylo Ren if she never received as much formal training as him?" - Answer: The force. At that moment the force was stronger in her than in him.

Rey would very much be a Mary Sue if it wasn't for the Force.

If other Star Wars media didn't set rules for the Jedi and boil the Force down to a set of specific super powers, I wonder if we'd have quite as much discussion. "How was she able to Force Grab(tm) and use a Jedi Mind Trick(tm) without being trained to know what they are?"

I am now actually starting to warm up to the Rey Kenobi theory thanks to this thread.

My only problem with it would be the fact that it would deal with another unknown. By that I mean it might be a bit too much of a mystery. For instance if Luke is the father, that is the twist and the only remaining mystery would be the mother.

If Kenobi is the grandfather, you have the story of him meeting the grandmother, them getting a kid, the kid meeting someone, then getting Rey, then somehow Luke finding Rey and training her to be a Jedi at his Academy.

Again...not saying it is impossible, but I think a bit improbable.

is that one any good? I'm much more interested in the backstory of newly beloved characters than Republic stuff (which i have already read up on, by now)

She's a lvl 6 who barely left the starting area, while he's certainly a lvl 40+.
He'd be showing as a "skull" in her UI.

And lol @ Rey picking scavanging as her first profession. Herbalism and Alchemy is where the money's at while leveling up. Fool.

One spin-off movie every year there isn't a "main-trilogy" movie. You just listed at least two movies right there. Obi Wan's adventures during his 30 years of solitude and Obi-Wan's offspring shenanigans.

How did Kylo Ren get from the bridge of the Star Destroyer watching the laser beam, to Maz's place moments after it blew up? It was one of those weird things that stood out to me because they didn't make an effort to explain it.

i would really like to see ewan as obi-wan in a movie that's made well.

it's weird we're getting more prequel films but the idea seems exciting.

uhm. Hyperspace?

it takes Rey literally 30 seconds to fly from the Illenium-System (how do you spell it? the resistance base's system) to where Luke's at.

Yeah, which is unfortunate. Fett is probably one of the worst characters, but the fanbase goes gaga over him because "armor".

Which is why it's not a bad idea to give the 'undeserved' fan favourite a great storyline. Thereby, in hindsight, justifying the hype around him.

I mean, wasn't the only thing he managed to hit in RotJ the side of the sail barge? And he tied up luke?

He managed the great task of spotting the Falcon when it came out of it's hiding place of laying on one of the imperial destroyers (which I am still amazed actually worked, god the empire are idiots sometimes) in Empire. After that, he just whined at Vader that he wants to get paid. And I do mean whined, dude just wouldn't shut up about it.

Fehyd explains it better than me why that rule exists:

The issue itself is that Jedi are a bit like The Nights Watch. They forego the relationship and emotion because it can put them in conflicting situations (such as when Anakin wanted to help Padme instead of chase Dooku in episode 2)

To put it simply, if there's a situation where a Jedi can save 1 person or 10 people, they needed to be able to save 10 people, not the 1 person because they love that person, or because that person is their child.

I mean, Padme could die of a freak heart attack that Anakin couldn't clearly see, and still gone dark side to try and "save" her.

The only way to really remove the emotional aspect is to train them young, and basically turn them into monks.

It's not religiously motivated, the parallel with the Christians doesn't hold up in my opinion. And even so, yes, Luther & protestants were considered Corrupt Christians by the Catholic church. So you think Luke just left the Jedi order and started a new Reformed Jedi one just because he wanted to have wife and kids?

Ewan really was the best thing about the Prequels to me, and I'd love to see him get another opportunity to play Obi-Wan again. Obi-Wan actually tends to place rather highly in the fan polls as well, supposedly he's very popular with the Clone Wars generation.

Then there's the fact that Ewan wants to do another movie as Obi-Wan. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Well, all the other bounty hunters weren't able to spot it - so it can't have been that obvious.
Also, he managed to remain entirely undetected while following them, which would be a huge pain in the ass, as we know from pretty much any game that has 'trailing' missions.

Hyperspace travel has never been shown to be instant, and just because they don't explicitly mention the passing of time doesn't mean it doesn't occur. In fact unless they explicitly mention being able to travel anywhere near instantly I'm going to say they can't. However in the case of Kylo they establish continuity by linking the different scenes with the Starkiller death beam.

that's not an explanation, that's an interpretation.
To be honest, Jedi are MUCH closer to being members of a church than to being childless protectors of a wall.

Also, i don't think Luke ever knew that a Jedi isn't supposed to have kids. Did Obiwan tell him, did Yoda? ... i don't think that's a great sales pitch. "oh btw, i know that with Leia didn't work out, her being your sister and all. But don't worry, that's not gonna be an issue any longer - you're not allowed to fall in love anyway. Lucky, eh?"

Also, i don't think Luke has any kids.

It really wouldn't have hurt to have a cut in there somewhere to atleast imply the passage of time. Or say wipe to an exterior shot, have the alarm go off and have someone enter to cockpit and sit down to pull out of hyperspace. That way atleast the passage of time is implied.

Boba fett is cool. He looks awesome sure.. But he also does some cool stuff in empire strikes back, like tracking down solo, and he is the only one who doesn't seem afread of vader. The way he talks makes it seem like he doesn't give a shit actually.

Still, the beam travels at light speed, the Star Destroyer travels at light speed.

So, if Kylo gives the beam a 2 minute head start, he'll be arriving 2 minutes after the beam hit the star system near Maz Kanata's place.

the issue is that, until Rey spots the TIE Fighters overhead, we're supposed to entirely focus on Rey, the force calling her and her refusing that call. We're not supposed to be distracted by knowing that Kylo's on his way to grab BB8.

Just got back from my first viewing....so bloody amazing mates.

Officially in love with ReyRey, love BB-8 to pieces, love the cinematography and truly loved the overall experience.

I went to Return of the Jedi at the Cinema, and I haven't felt this giddy in a theatre since that day in 1983.

Amazing work JJ/Disney: never saw the Han death coming, or the Jedi swap to Rey (which I really thought felt so right).

Bravo, going again after Xmas to IMAX for 3D experience; might even go 3 times. 9.5/10.

Short flashback, longer, they can do it if they want.

Short flashbacks are easier to organically weave into a story in the way TFA did it. Longer sequences are much harder. You either have to introduce some sort of magical or scientific way to do it, or just say fuck it and force a scene in with "X years ago" captioned on top.

Giving Boba Fett a spin-off film is great.

The character isn't particularly strong now, so even if the film's bad, not much was lost really.

There's a lot you can do with him, personally I want some random bounty hunter to kill clone Boba within 5 minutes of the movie and just nick his armor.

The proposed Han Solo one however is a terrible idea.

Perhaps he was watching the beam from the Takodana system before beginning the ground assault? It would seem like the hyperspace beam is visible in the skies of distant systems; people on Maz's planet could see it.

Luke didn't 'leave' the Jedi Order... he was the Jedi Order. He was the only Jedi alive.
Whatever he says goes. So either he could have changed the rules... or he didn't even know the rules. Did anyone tell him he couldn't have wife and kids?

I'd be ok with a Boba Fett film but I'd prefer an Obi-Wan spin-off set between III and IV. I wasn't all that enthusiastic about a Han Solo film but Lawrence is writing again and I actually rate Lord and Miller quite highly.

They should make an IG-88 movie. He's the bounty hunter that deserves it.

The epic tale of how a Mos Eisley drinks dispenser became the most powerful robot ever, leading the robot rebellion and taking over the Death Star

Whoops. I misread. I was referring to the ending, where Rey/Chewie hop into the falcon to find Luke, and spend like 10 seconds in hyperspace and arrive at the planet.

Made it seem like Luke's planet was literally the next system over from the Resistance base.

wholly agreed with this post. han solo spinoff is such a stupid idea, and it's being directed by some people who already feel like a one-trick pony at this point. you can't fill harrison ford's shoes in this role. especially with him reprising it too this year. god help whoever gets cast in that.

and boba fett should have a poncho. give it to gore verbinski, he's been away for long enough for making a flop. that man can reconcile spaghetti western homage with big blockbuster setpieces so well. as long as he doesn't work with the pirates/lone ranger writers then he's straight.

edit: though it is good lord/miller aren't writing the han solo movie and kasdan is tackling that himself.
