[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #3) - That's Not How the Force Works

Does everyone assume Luke exhiled himself in pity? Could he be powering up and training the force like a mofo? Or learning new shit from temple?

I still think Luke trained rey from a kid and Ben goes dark and he has to shut the academy down and wipe her mind.it would be amazing if she has Kenobi blood - but do we just assume that only blood can make jedis? I think a lot of people will start to use the force in specialist ways like the old days. This is the real awakening of the light force to balance the growing dark side.

You guys think Hayden Christensen deserves a shot at playing Anakin/Vader again if they bring him back as a hallucination/Force Ghost for Ben/Luke/Rey? He's spent the last few years working on a farm because he feels like he didn't earn his fame after the SW flicks. Apparently he prefers having a low profile.

"From my Point of View, Ben, you're the douchebag!"

I can't explain why, but this post has taken me to a terrible place. This time, I'm choosing to share the pain.

I realized that Anakin slash Ben is going to be a thing. Fuck the internet, burn it down, etc. Unless you're into dark sider necrophiliac incest, in which case I mean nothing personal by this but eww.

Happy 2015, GAF.

Finally got to see this after 2 weeks. Of course it was great, but I didnt like all the unanswered questions. In the original Star Wars sure there were mentions of Jedi Orders, Clone Wars, old apprentices, but all of that was backstory not really necessary to understand what was going on. Writing off Luke's accomplishments or where the Resistance and First Order or this Snoke fella came from were disconcerting and made this feel like more of a reboot than a real sequel.

Also, not a fan of Snoke so far. Don't like his design one bit, making a new ALIEN main villain had so many paths to go and they made a Voldeprometheus. I think showing him this soon was a mistake too. And Maz Kanata just disappearing like that was amateur. Both of those characters were handled poorly.

Now I can join the Mary Sue debate. All I can say is that it's bullshit.

I think he actually exiled himself in shame. Like, maybe there's a reason you don't see any other Knights of Ren in the present day.

ANH was kinda a one off at the time. Lucas didn't know if he'd be able to make the others. So while there are plenty of unanswered questions in ANH it was self contained.

With this. We know it's a trilogy. So certain things will be left open simply because we have two movies to flesh everyone out.

There were some later scenes with Maz that were cut, and it definitely shows. Her exit is really abrupt. The last act had some editing issues but I think her departure was the most unfortunate consequence of it.

The editing isn't unskillful. There's just so much cut out of the third act that simply remaining coherent is at stake in the execution. I noticed on second viewing that they attempted to close out Maz to some extent. The last thing you see of her is the toppling of the statue of her that adorns her castle, but it's easily lost among the other action and not nearly enough in any case.

Snoke could be the same alien race as Maz, which would be an interesting parallel.

If it's well executed, sure, I'm in for that. I'd potentially envision him talking Rey off the ledge at a time when she's been driven close to darkness, or admonishing Ben for being a douche bag who doesn't understand anything about Anakin.

I still think that Luke being a father is a tad too obvious, but we'll see
If I placed a bet, it'd still be in Luke as the father. But yeah, the ONE thing that would make me hesitate is that it seems almost TOO obvious.

No, the last we see of Maz is her and Finn running onto the surface. Maz goes tells Finn to fight, to which he says that he doesn't have a weapon. And Maz is, like, YOU GOT A LIGHTSABER

Here's my overly convoluted and ultimately pointless theory that i'm more just writing down for the record. Luke is the father of course but the mother is Sabine of rebels, who is the daughter Satine and Obi-wan. So Rey is an Kenobi and a Skywalker, poetry it rhymes.....

(Think Dave Filoni debunked a connection between Satine and Sabine, but w/e. Cant stop me)

I like it!

I don't think it would. I think it could force Luke to stop running.

I wouldn't feel that motivation at all. He might feel like correcting his mistakes by personally facing his former apprentices, but get back to making more Jedi who could turn dark?... He'd be the definition of insanity.

But is it dense? Does it rhyme?

Sith are red, Jedi are blue

Luke's redemption depends on Rey's hue.

Snoke is pretty bad, and while it would have been nice if his appearance was some Wizard of Oz shit apparently the real guy is like 7 ft tall or something.

Apparently he originally was a female character who looked like a beautiful marble statue, but off. That sounds like it would've been a much better design.

Well, darn. I guess I'm just going to have to go see it again to make sure one way or the other.

Something I found time to appreciate on my second viewing was the handful of shots where the cinematography was more the star than any of the action within it.

One of the earliest shots of Rey is like this. After she exits the star destroyer there is a brief shot of her at a distance, framed by the concentric rings of the massive drive thing.

It's nothing to write more than a paragraph about, but it shows a commitment to photographic eye candy, and further sets the film apart from the po-faced prequels.

Another one I liked was the approach to the planet where the resistance is based, and the ships swoop beneath the planetary rings.

Both shots involving rings, huh. Something about things coming full circle? Or over analysis!

What do you think he uses that big round hole in the left eye area for?

Do we know when Ben/Kylo Ren's betrayal was? Was it only a few years ago or a long time ago?

From the book. Leia reveals this has been going on for 30 years: (Assuming that is about his age)

“He knew our child would be strong with the Force. That he was born with equal potential for good or evil.”

“You knew this from the beginning? Why didn’t you tell me?”

She sighed. “Many reasons. I was hoping that I was wrong, that it wasn’t true. I hoped I could sway him, turn him away from the dark side, without having to involve you.” A small smile appeared. “You had— you have— wonderful qualities, Han, but patience and understanding were never among them. I was afraid that your reactions would only drive him farther to the dark side. I thought I could shield him from Snoke’s influence and you from what was happening.”

Her voice dropped. “It’s clear now that I was wrong. Whether your involvement would have made a difference, we’ll never know.”

He had trouble believing what he was hearing. “So Snoke was watching our son.”

“Always,” she told him. “From the shadows, in the beginning, even before I realized what was happening, he was manipulating everything, pulling our son toward the dark side. But nothing’s impossible, Han. Not even now, at this late time. I have this feeling that if anyone can save him— it’s you.”

Edit: Also first time Han sees him as a grown man

Reaching up, he slowly removed the mask. For the first time Han saw the face of his son as a grown man — and it jolted him.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Anakin force ghost, but he shouldn't be morphin between Darth Vader and Anakin as rumored. He was redeemed at the end of Jedi, also can Sith even turn into force ghosts? Seemed like one of the things that separates Jedi from Sith.

It can be done as a cool hallucination sequence in which the two versions of his grandfather put pressure on him

Ghosts should be only talking to Luke.

Also no. Sith ideology and the spiritual training for becoming a ghosts are completely at odds

They'd have to either have it be a trick played by Snoke or some sort of metaphorical stuff, like if Kylo (or Rey for that matter) went to Dagobah or some sort of equivalent and was being given a "Force test".

Vader also tries to treat Anakin and himself as two seperate people. The man who served the emperor was Vader and the man that died in his son's arms at the end of a New Hope was Anakin and not Darth Vader. So there being two different personas affiliated with Vader's helmet would make a lot of sense. An angel and Devil on Kylo's shoulders.

The Birthday Skeleton
Luke being Rey's father would make Maz's speech illogical. Or stretched beyond recognition.

Another observation that I forgot about, the vision with the knights of Ren, if that happened in the past, I don't think Rey was there, I think she sees it through somebody else's eyes, like the Cloud City flashback. When it's a memory she's shown with the right age in it.
Unless both are actually visions for what's going to happen in the next episodes.
