Even Gizmodo jumped into the fray with this zinger:

"Looking for legitimate news on gaming site Spong is like getting your stock market tips from the World Weekly News, but sometimes even Bat Boy gets a good inside tip." (in reference to the XBox2 launching late 2005)

Damn Folder, you really need a new URL if you're trying to go legit.

This piece is a reply to us questioning whether Gizmodo should have been given a Bill Gates one on one. And you jumping on their bandwaggon, itself a tired bandwaggon, makes you look just super!
I've explained how SPOnG has changed.
I've pointed out that this change has been evident for about eighteen months.
I've bottomed the RE4 Xbox piece.
I've grown tired of repeating all of the above.
So one website has a crack at another. Break out the baby lotion, it's time for a great big wank! (I have to admit that the Bat Boy jibe made me laugh out loud though.)
In related news, the changes at SPOnG should be evident in a piece due to be published in the next two weeks. I cannot link to it under threat of banning, though I'm sure you'll see it knocking around.

Jesus Christ, Folder, no need to get all defensive with me. You probably don't remember, but I've been defending your website any time someone gives you shit about it.

What I'm saying to you is, basically - you need to change the name of your site. "Spong" has negative connotations.

I know. Sorry. It's just that we've worked so hard and cannot shed the image of old. Still, at least it sets us apart... Or something. :S
I'm serious about the piece in a couple of weeks. Should be fun!

Why do you have to keep the Spong name, though? Do you really think you'll be able to shed all the negatives the Spong name has accumulated over the years? Shit, call yourself "Next Generation Online" or something. ;)

We had such discussions though tbh, we kinda like the notoriety.
We hope that we offer a comedic take on gaming happenings with a few juicy leaks and whatnot to spice things up. Hopefully people wil learn that the dark days are long gone and they can hit SPOnG for a chuckle about the games industry in a style aimed at an older, slightly more cynical audience. Either that, or we should call ourselves Next Generation Online or something! :)
 
Spong already provides high comedic value. What will change?

And what's it like to be consistently wrong? If you want to become legit, change the site's name, change your name, and stop being a putz.

Actually, you should apply that particular instruction to yourself. Folder's been a remarkably good sport, considering the amount of (admittedly somewhat deserved, IMO) bashing that Spong gets.
 
I haven't followed the RE4 on Xbox thing closely, but are you now saying it's not coming and you were mistaken? Or are you still saying it is? I recall your original post claiming news within 2 weeks or something.

And Spong has a BAD name. Change the name. He's a putz for not understanding that. Take it from someone who has an idea of what they're talking about. Maybe you only get casual visitors at your site and they don't care... who knows.

IIRC shortly after the original article SPong published a 'RE4 Xbox is under NDA so we may not hear any news about an Xbox version for awhile' article. Folder does take all the ribbing in stride... the blowup in this thread is a bit out of character for him.

A couple of things:

1) The fact that Gizmodo was able to land an interview with Bill Gates after existing for such a short (relatively) period of time speaks to both the popularity of the site, the credibility of the site, and to how powerful an outlet a few people with Moveable Type can be. The interview was pretty good, did you read it? It's not like they kicked things off with "Why does Windows suck, and do you own a PS2?"

2) Stop spelling the name of your site like a 14-year-old. Alternating lowercase/uppercase hasn't been cool since....ever, now that I think about it. You're constantly defensive about Spong's credibility problem, which exists both here and across the rest of the Internet. Saying "it's changed, it's changed! Honest!" one moment, and then seeming to continue with the status quo by pushing stuff like, I dunno, RE4 for XBox, doesn't really do too much for you.

Less defending, more doing, and the credibility will come along with that.

Is spong actually an acronym for something? It really isn't a pleasant sounding word. It makes me think of birth control or rude body functions when I hear it. I'm not saying this as any kind of disrespect, it just sounds like it could be a swear word or something. Go spong yourself, something like that.
