Nintendo removes all mentions of VRR Docked compatibility from their websites.

It'll be fine, Nintendo games don't need that, plus target audience doesn't know any better, plus few people play docked anyway.

Hard facts mate.

Therefore VRR is even more important.

Where is this from?

Because a big chunk of Switch users will not be able to answer such polls, many of whom will be handheld players.

I have no idea what VRR is or rather what ot does exactly but I play 80% portable so seems it won't affect me.

Didn't understand if it's hardware related or a firmware thing

Your Switch 2 screen has it. It'll give you a better and more stable framerate when the game has it tough. In short.

You'll love it when you have it in your hands.

1: how is the bandwidth or maximum refresh rate even remotely relevant? what the hell are you even taking about here?
I told you the monitor has VRR even tho it's HDMI 2.0, and you come back with refresh rates... that's like me showing you a round piece of paper telling you it's round, and you trying to argue against it by telling me it isn't round because it has a surface area of 30.2cm²

2: are you actually even looking at the data they provide in the review? scoll down my dude, they have a PS5 compatibility test using the HDMI 2.0 port... guess what they found? VRR compatibility with PS5... does the PS5 suddenly support freesync? nope... the HDMI 2.0 monitor supports HDMI VRR

It's completely relevant to understand the differences between standard refresh rate displays and those with variable refresh rate (VRR) capabilities. What I posted earlier was directly from the Rtings review you linked. The monitor in question supports G-Sync and FreeSync over HDMI but not VRR via HDMI 2.0 specifically.

This has been my point all along. The monitor accepts FreeSync and G-Sync over HDMI, but the maximum refresh rate for 4K is 60Hz through that connection. If you look at the image you posted (under both HDR and non-HDR frequencies), you'll see the maximum refresh rate listed is 60Hz. Why is that important? Because the PlayStation 5 uses Adaptive Sync, which is compatible with FreeSync and G-Sync technologies for its VRR implementation. That means if your display supports either FreeSync or G-Sync, the PS5 can take advantage of variable refresh rate but it does so via those technologies, not directly through HDMI 2.0 VRR.

You actually would have benefited from VRR here, your assumptions are horribly incorrect.

Especially that lowest possible input lag REQUIRES VRR - framerate needs to never match maximum refresh rate (that introduces vsync lag) so game has to be locked few Hz/fps below that. Reflex is doing that automatically.

what in the everloving fuck are you talking about? the PS5 has NO support for FreeSync and NO support for Gsync. a Freesync compatible TV will not work with the PS5 unless it also supports HDMI VRR.
why are you pulling completely made up stuff out of your ass right now?
Samsung has multiple freesync TVs that do not work with the PS5 but work with the Xbox consoles... I wonder what you'll pull out of your ass to explain that.

here's an HDMI 2.0 monitor that supports Freesync over HDMI, but not HDMI VRR:

in conclusion:
HDMI VRR WORKS ON HDMI 2.0. THIS IS A FACT THAT I HAVE DEMONSTRATED BY LINKING TO NOW 3 SOURCES CONFIRMING IT... AND NO THE PS5 DOES NOT SUPPORT FREESYNC, AND ESPECIALLY NOT GSYNC AS ONLY NVIDIA GPUs SUPPORT THAT DUE TO BEING PROPRIETARY.
STOP MAKING SHIT UP

technically you can use Nvidia Fast Sync with an unlocked framerate to let the game run above your refresh rate as well, that can lead to even lower latency. usually using Nvidia reflex to stay just below your refresh is lower latency tho, unless you can get significantly higher framerates than your refresh rate.

the best latency to image quality tradeoff is usually achieved by using Reflex + VRR (again unless you play like CS2 and run 480fps on a 240hz monitor)

I don't get why people are confused about people playing their Switch docked. It's the only way to play Nintendo's games (well, except for emulation). There is no dedicated console for the tv. You think those who bought Nintendo's consoles in the past just suddenly went away? If I'm getting a switch 2, it's gonna be docked all the time like my switch 1. I don't want game on a small lcd with fake HDR on the Switch 2, I want to game on my oled tv with proper hdr.

Immersions on a tiny ass screen, the immersion of my averaged size 55 inch oled destroys any handheld. And there isn't a comfortable way to hold a handheld or phone in bed for any length of time, at least the ways I've tried. I mean I can prop up a phone or tablet on a pillow and watch some passive entertainment and that's fine, but gaming? Fuck no. Sitting back in recliner with a controller is far more comfortable and uncompromising. People gaming on a handheld out of preference over necessity (nothing wrong with gaming on the go) are weird. If you are at home, have a nice tv, one one is using it, and you game on you switch's screen instead? That insanity.

A 1080p lcd with fake hdr (switch 1 it's lcd or oled at 720p with SDR) looks worse than a modern lcd with local dimming or oled no matter how close to your eyes you hold it. And are you only playing for 15 minutes or something? Seriously you ain't playing a rpg or other long game comfortably for long periods, especially if you are holding it next to your eyes.

There is enough antidotal evidence suggesting otherwise. You should explore the relation of G-Sync Compatible monitors/TVs and FreeSync over HDMI.

Heck even chatgtp, says the same.

What VRR on PS5 Does:

  • VRR syncs the display's refresh rate with the console's frame output, helping eliminate screen tearing and stutter for smoother gameplay.
  • PS5 officially supports VRR over HDMI 2.1, but it can also work with some HDMI 2.0 displays via a workaround using FreeSync.

⚙️

  • HDMI 2.0 doesn't officially support HDMI Forum VRR (which is the HDMI 2.1 VRR standard).
  • However, many HDMI 2.0 TVs and monitors support AMD FreeSync, which is a form of VRR.
  • The PS5 uses AMD hardware, so it can take advantage of FreeSync-compatible displays, even over HDMI 2.0.

🧪 Real-World Use:

  • You can get VRR at up to 60Hz over HDMI 2.0.
  • You won't get 4K@120Hz VRR, which is only possible over HDMI 2.1.
  • The experience can vary depending on your TV or monitor's FreeSync implementation.

📝 What You Need:

  1. A TV or monitor that supports FreeSync over HDMI 2.0
  2. PS5 firmware update (released April 2022 or later) that enables VRR
  3. Enable VRR under:
    • Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR

⚠️ Caveats:

  • Not all HDMI 2.0 displays support FreeSync.
  • FreeSync support must be over HDMI (some only support it via DisplayPort).
  • PS5 still won't let you manually toggle FreeSync—it only uses HDMI Forum VRR officially, but works with FreeSync displays that are compatible.

You sir must have unlocked one of the mysteries of the ages because I have been trying to game comfortably on handhelds since 1989 when I got a gameboy. All I got are strained necks, strained eyes, and arms getting sore trying to held one for any length of time.

Sounds more like what it should be expected with Nintendo. It is as if time had not moved from the day the original withered technology architecture they picked up. You get that and whatever problems we had at that time as if time had not moved forward.

If they know what VRR is, they do, and advertise it then it is on them in 2025 to work with their partner nVIDIA they selected many moons ago to make it work. Period… excuses about the Dock go in the same direction.

That technically isn't low latency if you can't actually observe coherent changes - because your sample rate is half the required number. Yes, for shooters where you are using a automatic weapon and sweeping it will give the same result, but in a driving gaming it is doing anything to help you minimise braking or allowing you to pick a marginally better racing line by minimizing over steer because your visual feedback latency is still half the input rate

This might be another case of them heeding Cerny's comment about licensing technology. They don't want to license proprietary tech forever, and would rather use FSR3 or DLSS3.5 frame-game or their own so they aren't paying forever and aren't beholden to Nvidia.

Since they can't even comment on all the noise surrounding price, there's like 0 chance this VRR thing will be addressed.

Especially via a Tweet. Now that I think about it, maybe they sponsored Digital Foundry with the Zelda video so they didn't make a VRR video ;).

Them removing a feature that was previously mentioned is far more important to address than than the price, they didnt cause any confusion with the price, people just didnt like it

It still says VRR on the EU website, guess were lucky? ;)

Interesting....you are right. This at least suggests that there is a reason they are not highlighting the feature in the US. More than likely due to the current trade situation.

Nowhere on this page it is said to be working on the TV. You can interpret it however you want, but when talking about VRR they aren't specifically talking about the docked experience.

The screen is confirmed VRR. Everything in that sentence is applicable to the handheld experience as well.

So, it doesn't say anything about the docked experience.

So what? It doesn't say that VRR is supported for the TV.

VRR was always available for handheld. This topic is about docked only.

Back in the days of Wii - and Wii U IIRC - Nintendo used to run separate domains for all the websites, with all US info being the primary and it eventually proliferating down to the secondary regional domains, which in a feedback I told them was crappy.

I'd guess that they've just hidden the local autonomy at the domain, but it hasn't changed much in terms of local website publishing other than a global website design template, and the other sites just haven't updated, yet.

What do you mean "so what"? The fact that VRR was removed from that specific paragraph dealing with TVs and external displays is what prompted this entire discussion.

Yes, but the EU website doesn't suggest VRR is there for the docked experience. So it isn't news.

Well, as I said earlier it's a 50/50 thing unfortunately. Nintendo needs to clarify what's going on.

VRR reference to the LCD screen remains so to me this is definitely referring to external displays as the context of the paragraph implies. With that assumption, this means the US is the outlier here and probably due to the current trade situation. That would also explain why Nintendo is being quiet about it. If they are trying to check some corporate lawyer checkboxes then that is never something they are going broadcast.

That's me finding ways of giving them the benefit of the doubt, at least.

If that is the case, it's a smart move by Nintendo. I'm sure DF will talk about it in the upcoming DF Direct.

In all honesty, the system really needs VRR to be future proof for the upcoming 8 years.
