Well on todays plate is Kaiji, Steins;Gate, and Portal 2. I'll start with some science!
I got Portal 2 today too but I don't think I'll be able to play it until next week :/

Oh and there will be Toriko soon enough. A busy day indeed.

I guess this is a question to the mecha fans in the audience. Now that I've watched:

Gundam Movie Trilogy, Zeta Gundam, 0080 War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team, 0083 Stardust Memory, G Gundam, ∀ Gundam, Gundam 00, Gundam Unicorn, Gunbuster, Diebuster, Giant Robo, Code:Geass, True Mazinger Z, New Getter Robo, Mazinkaiser, Mazinkaiser SKL, The Big O, TTGL, Break Blade, Armor Trooper VOTOMS, Armor Hunter Mellowlink, Patlabor Everything, SDF Macross, Macross: DYRL?, Macross Plus, Evangelion and RahXephon the next play I go is presumably:

Gao Gai Gar if I want to watch a good show? Even if it's only really got a good second half?

You've watched all those and haven't watched Evangelion yet?

I'm pretty sure he watched Evangelion; he loves to rightfully write long pieces of text about how the TV show is superior to the new movies.

Hmm, thanks for the suggestions. I may claim to be starting up Ideon but I'm only really watching it out of historical curiosity, so it would be nice to watch a good show instead.

Gasaraki isn't truly mecha, but it is ok.
Well if it's produced by Sunrise...and it is. That's close enough!

Haven't finished it yet, but from what I've seen so far, I would suggest Fang of the Sun Dougram. Especially if you liked Votoms.

IGLOO 2 is also decent.

Don't watch Ideon. Wait for the BD

Yes, and Betterman directly after Gao Gai Gar.

After watching all those mech shows, what you really ought to do is get into the Super Robot Wars game franchise (not the anime; there are a few SRW anime but they pale compared to the games' awesomeness). Don't know Japanese? No problem - if you pick some of the older games (for example the SRW Alpha series) there are translation guides on GameFAQs. Banpresto really have a talent for melding and connecting the plotlines of the various different mech shows that their games include.

Wow someone actually subbed that Otona Joshi no Anime Time thing. Nice.
Well, if you want to call it a sub anyway.

Also, maybe because these opening Gintama episodes are standalone and have nothing to do with the 200 episode mythology, but I think they're pretty fun. They're self-aware, but not to the obnoxiousness of most nerd-television on these days. I hope once they start going back to the "real stuff" that I won't get lost.

You should watch Soukyuu no Fafner if you liked Eva and Rah - I've not seen Eva and it's not as good as Rah, but it's one of the more interesting Eva knockoffs and has a very good second half. It's much more popular in Japan than the West, weirdly.

I think the best of the Macross you've not listed is Macross Zero - it may have mystic environmental stuff in but it's basically porn for action animation lovers and has damn good CGI.

I'd agree with the recommendation for Gasaraki earlier in the thread.

And for something quirky you should probably watch Dai Guard - it's a melding of office comedy and mecha, quite underrated.

All of those except Macross were at least once available on either US or UK DVD, too.

This season feels great. I'm not watching every day, so it feels like I've got a mountain of stuff to enjoy every few. Hell, I didn't even finish the pile that I had planned to last night--stopped after "Ao no exorcist," which was fckin boring. Luckily enough, for both Deadman Wonderland and Blue Exorcist, the second eps look to be immensely more entertaining than the ones before. So I'll keep watching.

I've about hit my limit with Nichijou though, EP3 was incredibly dull.

Berserk 12

Guts kills a lot of dudes. That's the whole episode. Pretty odd, when people say stuff like "this is totally toned down. graphically speaking, from the vastly superior manga!".

You say that like any animated series could ever include a scene like this! (warning: nsfw, disturbing, etc) or some choice scenes from the Lost Children arc
(stinger rape)
, etc.

In terms of violence, I have no idea what the upper limit is for TV content. Stuff like the Violence Jack OAV's are as violent as that, but there is of course little limit on what an OAV can contain.

As for graphic depictions of rape, I can't say I'd be too saddened not to see them again.

Yeah it would have to be an OAV.

In the Lost Children arc (or really in general, but especially there) it was all about dramatic effect. But I tend to think that Berserk without the need for brain bleach just isn't Berserk.

Those Hellsing OVAs as well with that invasion scene.

Seriously though, the anime was toned down in quite a few ways. Jex, I know you and I disagree on the exposition thing (I think knowing of the betrayal and everything else in advance is the better narrative choice), there are some less subjective things as well: like certain aspects of Guts' past only being symbolically alluded to
ie: child rape
, which while it's obvious why they didn't touch on it directly, it's so central to his character that not being able to really go there doesn't do the story a service.

Kurisu's presence livens things up somewhat. Mayushi continues to be dumb and vapid. (I guess she pushed a crayon up her nose when she was young.) Still bored. Still, things might get interesting next episode.

I heard it's worth sitting through GaoGai Gar for the FINAL OVAs. I'd probably suggest watching Getter Robo: Armageddon first though, it's only 13-episodes, and one of the better super-robot ovas.

I also heard it's worth sitting through Ideon for the ending and the second movie..

Also you haven't seen Chars counterattack?

This wouldn't excite me considering it's by the angel beats director, but it's by BRAIN BASE! so I'll haft to give it a look.

The biggest atrocity of the Berserk anime was the exclusion of Puck.

I wouldn't say that's the biggest atrocity but it does reflect a lot of the other problems I had with it. ie: It was essentially just a Golden Age vehicle (and so Puck wasn't really needed), but yeah, you then run into some intractable problems if you try to tell any more of the story because he isn't included.

I do also think the first few volumes of exposition were pretty critical, even if a bit on the long side. For example, knowing what happens in advance only raises more curiosity as to how everything can go to shit in such a magnificent way, along with making it clear that that was the intended direction for the story all along instead of just this weird thing that comes out of left field.

And even as a Golden Age vehicle there are a lot of small examples of 'adaptation decay' (ie:
Princess Charlotte taking the poison dart for Griffith when breaking him out of the Tower of Rebirth.
It was a small scene, but meaningful enough that it's lack of inclusion does make one version superior to the other.) I haven't seen the anime in quite a while but I'm sure there are a lot of things like that.

I'm going through some of those chapters right now, and it all seems so tame. I remember thinking back then that they were really badass, but the seven or so years that have passed since I first read them have done a number on me. :(

After my last few "weekends of Uziga", nothing in Berserk phases me anymore :/

I think i read all those chapters back when i was 13 or something, it was definitely shocking back then, but nowadays it's fairly tame!

Yea time can change a person.

With all the stuff i've seen since then, it really loses some impact.

Mozgus made me REALLY angry as a 15 year old. Always hated templar knight and "in the name of the lord" villains, what with being a Jew growing up in a slightly anti-semitic environment and all. Now I just think he's ridiculous and funny.

As a 15-year old Asian kid with vaguely agnostic beliefs, I thought he was just really sinister.

Now he's just silly.

I liked Lotte's toy 2nd episode way more than I probably should, but every time they say chu-chu I laugh. Too bad Rie doesn't have enough lines! I wanna listen to Rie more, more, more!!!

That out of the way, I thought Mozgus' crew were pretty cool. I liked the giant wheel being used as a weapon as well as those spirit possessed corpses on wheels.

Berserk hasn't really had any terrible doings in it for awhile.

I like it but I wouldn't recommend it. I just wish they wouldn't pace certain episodes as they have been doing i.e. Episode 1 & 3.
