Nope. I was first put off by the Firefly comparisons and then, like Eva, I didn't want to watch it because it was so "canon" and I was sure it would never meet my high expectations. Eva surprised me though, so I was willing to track down some DVDs for Bebop.

You really should watch Bebop. It's great fun. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the greatest anime ever or anything, but it's incredibly well made and a lot of fun.

I would say it's only superficially similar to Firefly. They have similar concepts (hard luck space crew in a sci-fi/western setting), but the executions are completely different.

I actually don't know if I can be that elitist, I tend to like most things I watch to some degree. A small part of me kinda wants to watch that Bottle Fairy thing DrForester posted a bit back there.

Maybe I'm still in the Honeymoon phase of anime watching and I'll get jaded
come to my senses
as time goes on.

My palette ranges from dollar store paper bag vodka to thousand dollar bottles of champers apparently. :lol

Half the fun of Slam Dunk is watching the games. Without them, you'd be left with a crappy comedy.
Yeah, I fast forwarded through the Utena battles *ducks*, so I'm not sure how long I could last if I had to watch every minute of the basketball games.

Speaking of which, I'm somewhat curious to watch Initial D as well... even though I have no interest in the actual racing. Figures.

cosmicblizzard, I fully approve of your list. You deserve a totally awesome brofist.

Hellsing321, thanks to you I got bumped down to 12th place. You've made a powerful enemy today.

This settles it. You're a crazy person.

I'm the exact opposite. I never skip anything, including openings and endings.

Whether or not it's the best, singular, I can't think of a single series I would place clearly above it.

The show wouldn't be as good without watching the racing, considering it's the combination of racing + eurobeat music that makes the series memorable.:p

Plus they have talking / discussions during the races later in the series anyway.

Yep, I've been disabused of the direct comparison to Firefly. It's mostly the hype surrounding it really, but I'm sure I can get over that hump.

That's exactly what happened to me. I thought Macross F was the greatest thing ever 2 years ago (although, I still enjoy it in a guilty pleasure kind of way).

I'm the contrarian who feels that most action scenes are just another form of exposition. :lol

Doubly so when the battles have very little stakes (re: Sucker Punch) and are just visual porn.

So it's like a fighting anime where the bros will take the time to have tea and biscuits in between pummelling each other to death?

Don't decide to watch or dislike a sports anime based on the sport. It's one of the biggest problems the genre faces. I don't know I can watch X because I don't like the sport. You don't have to like the sport.

Sorry, no repeat of the School Days shenanigans here. Though I sadly read the manga first instead of watching it, so it wasn't as big of a shock. I don't think it's been more than a year since I started to watch more than just what showed up on adult swim but I've seen lots already.

Elfen Lied is even better.

Wait... I actually enjoyed some of Elfen Lied.

This was before I was jaded about anime. Elfen Lied had shock value and was new and fresh!

Especially since they usually just insert shounen BS magic and power levels in and ignore the actual strategy of the sport.

I don't care about gambling but I love Kaiji!

Don't give a crap any sports though, but a few shows centering on them are quite good.

Yeah, I don't particularly care for biking, and I thought Overdrive was fun. That might just be my indifference to the sport though. Trying to watch an anime around a sport I actually dislike, like hockey, might actually affect my enjoyment.

Only reason I made it is because I had a lengthly conversation with Firehawk over heteronormitivity and yuri! Also I bashed Madoka. I don't really very often post much in these threads.

Yeah, I love tons of sports anime/manga that I don't care at all for the actual sports for. The only sport that I'm really a huge fan of in real life and in anime is baseball. Pretty much every other sports anime I like is for a sport that I either hate or am apathetic to outside of anime.

Oh, I know. I don't particularly love baseball (especially since our team still hangs on 92/93 as if championships nearly 20 years ago still mattered), but I liked OoFuri and Adachi.
I also, for the most part, enjoyed the bro-love in Giant Killing. With Slam Dunk, it's very much the length (which is mitigated by the ability to fast forward through some of the games, admittedly).

If you're planning on skipping the races then there is absolutely nothing else there. The races are cool, but the characters are shitty and paper thin and the plot is incredibly basic. I liked it a lot at first, but it goes on for so long and gets old after a while.
Basically it's the Ippo of racing
.

I think Kaiji is dumb, does that count? Bad story, drowning in worse art, surrounded by dull and unlikable characters. Seriously.

No way. Early 2000s was the time were the whole fansub thing started exploding big time.
Much better stuff was out there even then :O.

Except Ippo is supposed to be good... right? :lol
And I guess I can cross that off my list!

Firehawk also likes to skip mecha scenes in mecha anime.
The best parts of Eva and even E7 were when the characters were out of their fey robot suits. Admit it!
Hell, FMP did a whole season where they didn't even touch their robots and it's considered the best season of that show!

I can't think of many iconic scenes in Eva that don't involve at least one person in an Eva.

Hey Bonta-kun is still a mech.

Yeah, thats exactly me, with the same series too. I've still yet to watch anything other than Frontier, but I suspect once I do it'll be put in a different light. I've also done stuff like watch all 100 odd episodes of Shugo Chara and Doki and watched all of endless 8 in one sitting. Good times.

Off hand, the endings of both the TV series and the End of Eva movie. Hell, End of Eva is basically Shinji
masturbating over Asuka and then choking her to near death
.

Oh Boy this sounds like a chance for me to say crazy things!
K-on was garbage, OreImo was the best show during that season, and Seikon no Qwaser is fun for PLOT and plot.

Branduil said:

Most of the scenes that jump immediately to my memory don't involve the Evas (outside of Episodes 18 and 19). That's not to say that those parts weren't good, but it was the interactions of the characters outside of the battles that sell that series.

It is good (at least the anime is). The fights and the setup for the fights are so well done they make up for the shows shortcomings, but if you're not looking forward to the fights then stay far far away.
