You really should watch Bebop. It's great fun. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the greatest anime ever or anything, but it's incredibly well made and a lot of fun.
I would say it's only superficially similar to Firefly. They have similar concepts (hard luck space crew in a sci-fi/western setting), but the executions are completely different.
Yep, I've been disabused of the direct comparison to Firefly. It's mostly the hype surrounding it really, but I'm sure I can get over that hump.

Maybe I'm still in the Honeymoon phase of anime watching and I'll get jaded
as time goes on.
That's exactly what happened to me. I thought Macross F was the greatest thing ever 2 years ago (although, I still enjoy it in a guilty pleasure kind of way).

This settles it. You're a crazy person.
I'm the exact opposite. I never skip anything, including openings and endings.
I'm the contrarian who feels that most action scenes are just another form of exposition. :lol
Doubly so when the battles have very little stakes (re: Sucker Punch) and are just visual porn.

The show wouldn't be as good without watching the racing, considering it's the combination of racing + eurobeat music that makes the series memorable.
Plus they have talking / discussions during the races later in the series anyway.
So it's like a fighting anime where the bros will take the time to have tea and biscuits in between pummelling each other to death?
