I guess this comedy isn't for me. I kind of wish KyoAni employed a style similar to Lucky Star to setup incoming jokes.

I'll have to take your word for it as I haven't seen the episode yet.

That's besides the point, surely there's got to be a point in your life where you realise you're 15 and you're sniffing a 10 year olds dress, switch up and make a bloated Menma picture and put it on the cieling lol, it may still be creepy but at least it's visual and not trying to maintain a physical connection to a goddamn 10 year old in your mind.
Why? I honestly don't get this. What the hell is the difference? If it was a parent smelling the dress or commenting on how something smells like her and brings back memories no-one'd bat an eye, I honestly don't understand why there's some pedophile connection being made even though the other person's dead. This is purely something made up in my opinion. If it's ok to remember someone and not move on by keeping a picture it's also fine to keep some clothes, if it's not ok to keep some clothes than you should also be a pedophile for keeping a 10 year old's picture, why the hell is there a double standard?
Steroyd said:
And then there's does it even smell like Menma even more lmao.
Hey, just laying it out there man, smell really is the most potent thing to recall memories.

Whew, finally back on the slightly better computer. Now I will find it hard to resist replying to some pretty old posts saved in the tabs here... :)

Anyway, yes, a review of something new(ish)!
Dog Days 02 - :lol So awesome, this show is so bad. I'll be watching this for sure, for a while at least. :) It's awful harem junk, but it's right in that "amusingly bad" niche. Full of generic harem stereotypes, some humor that shows that the creators have some understanding of how stupid this is, the announcer calling our hero stupid, for instance, after it was shown on video how he accidentally hit his ally instead of the enemy, which did a hit which later destroyed her clothes... yeah, harem main characters usually do things like that, but it's not usually then shown on screen for all to see while an announcer calls the guy dumb. :) Also, (Princess) Leonmichele is amusing, and kind of awesome. So will there be a new, third threat that gets the cats and dogs to work together or something, or will the girls in this show stay on opposing sides? (Dogs are bad, he should switch sides. :))

So he can't return home, huh? Now we have a plot, he's got a few weeks to figure out how to get back...

Oh, and I do like that they gave an actual reason for some of his abilities -- he's a gymnast. That doesn't explain his fighting skill really, of course, but at least they actually explained his crazy athletic and jumping ability.

(something older)
Galaxy Angel 01-02 - What, this generic and average looking sci-fi comedy show is indeed generic and average? I'm shocked! Meh, it's dumb, but entertaining enough to watch I guess. That girl's luck is pretty sillily good. I mean, bullets never hitting the goodguys is common, but an asteroid hitting the casino right as the casino owner cheated again to beat them, wrecking the place and causing them to win instead? Yes, it happens. :)

AnoHana spoilers

Because we, the audience, don't know how he got those clothes yet, so we're assuming he most likely got them underhandedly; hence, we assume he's susceptible to certain types of behavior and suspect to fitting under a certain image like creepy raper/stalker guy because such deviance seems to imply that sort of characteristic? Just guessing. But I do feel predisposed to the same line of thought actually, but I'm not committed to labeling him anything right now (
because I'm still upset they went this route
). I do agree it's a double standard since it's not abnormal for parents to keep old memorabilia like children toys and clothes, but why did the director choose to use body odor as a trigger for reminiscing instead of something else like a brand of detergent? Honestly, I feel inclined to say it was probably to spur Yukiatsu's character development/depth within the short time frame because it immediately implies the level of affection he had towards her, his psychological state, etc. Perhaps they thought that message wouldn't have been communicated as effectively if it was only strawberry shortcakes or something? Besides, doesn't sniffing her dress carry an inherently negative connotation, usually sexual and/or perverted in society today? It's where my uneasiness comes from interpreting Yukiatsu's action admittedly, and where I'm inclined to label him as such but I'm hesitant in doing so because I really have to see what they'll do with Tsurumi/Tsuruko to judge how things will progress (
that and I'm still upset, argh
).

I don't get why people hate this so much. Is it because its not a convoluted mess with weird animation like Mononoke? Its got an interesting concept and its only still the beginning. Granted, the pokemon style might work better for a 24 episode series but there hasn't really been anything too offputting about C. Easily my 3rd best show of the season behind HanaIro and AnoHana.

He probably
stole it from her closet or something. I mean, I get he's a creeper but I doubt he'd steal from a corpse or what.

The main problem with the show is it just doesn't feel like it's from the same guy that bought us mononoke and trapeze. With the exception of the first few minutes of the first episode, which felt very nakamura-ish.

That and it lacks the great art direction those two shows had, in fact it kind of sucks in general like *barf* that CG in the second episode.

Despite that, I'm actually enjoying the show quite a bit. Although i can definitely understand the disappointment.

I guess that's the issue people have with it. They were expecting offbeat arthouse-y stuff and got a fairly by the numbers action show with an interesting concept.

Any of you watched the Blu Ray of Metropolis? I'm wondering if it's worth importing, or if there's any chance we'll ever see it released on Blu with English subs. (Yes I know the Blu Rip is available with English subs)

He's trying to keep a more physical connection to his memory of Menma through smelling her clothes specifically, not some shampoo she used to use, not some sunflowers in some field where they used to play, what she actually physically wore. A picture is okay as long as he doesn't start jacking off to it... and they're not of questionable poses.

A parent has a more legitimate reason to have the clothes in the first place, and it's almost splitting hairs here, the guy is still creepy wether it's a picture (dependant on quantity) or clothes it's a question of which is less creepy (because I'm that desensitised to the whole thing, fuck anime) and I'm annoyed at this show going this particular route given the tone of the episode overall when all is said and done.

Hey, just laying it out there man, smell really is the most potent thing to recall memories.

The guy needs a less creepy trigger than her actual clothes.

Nichijou 4 - Agree that there wasn't really a standout gag like in the first 2 episodes. I'm still enjoying myself so I'll keep watching but it'd be nice if they could do something to really make me laugh out loud again.

I agree it was somewhat confusing from time to time but I chalked it up to my mind being turned into mush by other anime. It made sense once I stopped and actually thought about it.

Out of curiosity, was Kyoko Kon already Executive Director of KON’STONE Inc., prior to the death of Satoshi Kon?

Kon'stone Inc is a company Kon set up prior to his death exclusively to manage all the rights and artistic properties of whatever he happens to actually own, so his wife can benefit financially from it without hassle after he dies. I'm pretty sure the company didn't even exist before he discovered he was going to die. Previously it was just Kon's personal website.

I don't know why, but I'm sort of not surprised no one really liked Nichijou 4. The episode just sold me on the series though... maybe because I'm happy for a comedy that doesn't rely on sex humour or references, but instead uses old fashioned gags.

Nichijou 4
I still think this show is funny, and I still get a laugh out of most scenes. It's a fun thing to watch on Sunday mornings for me. Anyway, this particular episode was better than 3, but not as good as 2. They just haven't matched that chase scene yet.

Oh! I see. As Satoshi Kon, before his death, mentioned the company as established and already with a management (http://ayasuzuki.blogspot.com/2010/09/goodbye-from-my-boss-satoshi-kon.html), I thought it was a personal project directed by him, and I didn't think that it could be a way to secure his wife's future. I hope the best for her!

It doesn't seem to the be the kind of movie that would sell well enough to bring over the Blu-Ray of, although I'd like to be wrong.

I just find it odd that so many jokes aren't funny at all. Truly there's a small amount of enjoyable content each episode surrounded by lots of humour that just falls on it's face.

You'd think it would either be consistently funny (in one particular style of humour) or consistently not-funny (in one particular style of humour).

I think it's specifically Kons'tone that he's referring to here:

(But) one of the things I did was, with the cooperation of 2 friends that I could trust, set up a company to take care of things like the measly number of copyrights that I hold. Another thing that I did was, to insure that my wife would take over any modest assets that I had smoothly by writing a will. Of course, I didn't think there would be any fighting over my legacy or anything, but I wanted to make sure that my wife, who would remain behind in this world, would have nothing to worry about - and besides, I wanted to remove any anxiety from myself, the one who was going to take a little hop over there, before I had to leave.

I love the flips between non-sequitor, visual humour and verbal humour. Comedy is subjective, of course, but I thought episode 4 had gags that worked throughout the episode. I mean, they're still setting up characters (Mohawk dude, and the guy and girl), but the actual joke parts were amusing to me for one reason or another.

And, unlike a lot of reference or sex comedy, I could probably rewatch the show and get something out of it.

Yeah, seems that way. He didn't posted the name of the company in that fragment and later he mentioned KON’STONE Inc., separately, so I was not sure to make the connection between the two. Sorry!

Also, if the Dreaming Machine (夢みる機械) project is definitely halted (and Katsuhiro Otomo said something recently to that effect) they could at least sell its storyboard through the SHOP KON’STONE. As detailed as Mr. Kon one's are, I suppose it could be some kind of consolation for his fans.

I've been putting watching AnoHana away because I've been awfully busy, but since it's holiday I had some time and watched both eps and damn.. I'm already in love with this show. It's the very first time a first episode of anything made me watery-eyed.

This is the type of stories I like the most - human drama with slight touch of supernatural. Plus it's good to see anime hero being emo for actually pretty damn good reason (and he still is nowhere near as bad as most of them anyway).

Overall this has been such an awesome season so far. So many good animes are airing right now. :)

You know a girl stuffed in a futon who thinks she's an alien? You lead an interesting life!

Also, most people are bizarre when you think about it. Even with myself, I occasionally feel like I'm observing an alien being.

But as to why Denpa Onna strikes me as so strange: Part of it is the animation and direction. (In SHAFT-world, necks are for twisting!) Part of it is unexpected and irrational reactions of the characters (Erio throws a stool onto the kitchen table, so Meme picks up her by her feet, spins her around wildly and throws her through the closed door! Ryuuko needs to look at the map to the MC's house, so instead of taking a hand off her bike handle, she picks it up with her teeth!) But a big, big reason for it is the dialogue. Even besides Erio's obtuse alien-talk, everyone talks in this roundabout and non-sequiturish way.

[dialog]

And so on. I suspect this would run smoother if I was fluent in Japanese, but as it is the conversation appears to run by some inner logic which I am not privy to. Much of the enjoyment I get watching Denpa Onna is trying to figure out that inner logic, like the MC has to decipher Erio's speech.
Oh no, Erio is really the exception, but that's mostly because she's a trauma victim who's become mentally delusional over it. And actually, the animators and voice actors did a great job with Meme throwing Erio because I really got the impression that she didn't want to acknowledge her daughter's problems, but just then was forced to and projected through it. Sure the dialog is funky, but I think that more has to do with styles of speak and speech politics more than anything. An English analog would be Shakespearian word play and word speak.

Erio aside, I know plenty of people like the fleshed out characters. Hell, I even resemble Helmet girl a bit personality-wise, but that's a different story.

30-sai no Hoken Taiiku 3
Creepy sweaty guy is creepy. Creepy cross-dressing shota is creepy. Creepy sex-god is creepy. Everything is creepy. BUT OH SO AMUSING. I don't think I'd be able to stand this if they stretched it over a half-hour, but this 15 minute short format is great. :3

While these episodes continue to fulfil the standard "monster of the week" format (sidenote: this is what monster of the week really looks like, unlike the opening episodes of Evangelion) I think that the show is actually paced really well. It also helps that something new is introduced frequently enough to keep my interest up.

Apparently, halted as in they don't know if they are going to continue to work on it, as of today. This is only considered a rumor as there isn't an official confirmation. This is one source of the information:
