Dusk Maiden 1

This started out mildly interesting, but the complete lack of any remotely likeable characters ruined this.

The general idea is that there's a club dedicated to investigating the supernatural. For some reason, everyone is dedicated to trolling the fuck out of one member, since everyone but her can see ghosts. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be funny or what, but it just paints everyone besides her as a complete jerk. The girl herself is dense enough to be the MC of a harem anime, so I don't have much sympathy for her. Then there's some other girl, who doesn't do anything but scowl. The MC is just the standard wishy washy dumbass protagonist you can find anywhere. The ghost was the only character with potential, but it all gets squandered when she turns out be just as petty and unlikeable as everyone else. Normally, I try to watch at least the first 3 episodes of a show, but I doubt I will do that for this one.

Oh yes, and Crunchyroll added yet another mystery box to their lineup chart that still has yet to be revealed. I wonder what it could be...

Eh? The main characters are clearly the spirit boy and the ghost. The female friend is never the main character.

I was hoping I might enjoy this after being pleasantly surprised by both Sankarea and Mysterious Girlfriend X (although... eeeew, drool? Really?). But no, this was just as lame as I thought it was going to be. Unfunny in the extreme (which wouldn't bother me if this was trying to be more dramatic than it was) and the characters were completely unlikeable; this, much more than Mysterious Girlfriend, reminded me of many anime from the 90s.

That's pretty insane. But I guess they're not the crazy ones if people are actually buying it.

Yeah. Honestly, it's as much force of habit for me at this point as anything - I've been watching this stuff since the 90's, when the only way I'd actually be able to see something was to actually buy it (usually on VHS, usually dubbed only). It continued through the age of easy-fansub access through a combination of habit and guilt-purchases for stuff I ended up watching all the way through.

I'm actually trying to get out of the habit these days, at least as far as the expensive Japanese disks go (the US/UK stuff isn't so bad in terms of cost). The exchange rate isn't anywhere near as favourable as it used to be, when picking up these things wasn't that much more than the US release (bearing in mind that's when they spread 26-episode shows across eight disks in the US). Heck, these days, where most the stuff I want to watch is streaming, the guilt isn't even there.

Once iM@S wraps up, and the second Fate box of course, I'll be calling the imports quit short of the occasional movie/OAV.

I think you misunderstood, I was saying that, just like your average Harem MC, the girl who opens the episode is incredibly dense, not that she herself was the MC.

You know what, fine, Japan, you win. I'll play along with your nonsense this time. But only out of respect for Nishishi/Poplar VA.

This is basically Anime: The Anime.

Mysterious Girlfriend X 01 I'm really mixed about this, I like the unusual atmosphere it has (in part thanks to some great art direction) and I like the kinda dated character design, and Urabe's VA is great. The whole drool thing is gross, especially in the sexual context, with it literally gushing from her mouth at the end - hopefully there's some good reason for it, rather than it just being some weird fetishistic pandering or something. I'll watch some more episodes and see where it goes

OZMA 04 This was one of the better episodes, I liked the submersibles combat. Still liking it overall, the pacing is good but it's missing something from the overall plot, it's like they've glossed over a lot of the background stuff. It's only 6 episodes right? I'd say it would be suited better as a movie

Hiiro no Kakera 02 Pretty in line with episode 1, not doing a whole lot special but it's easy watching, and some of it looks pretty. The blue haired guy is seriously irritating though, always shouting. Still on my 'may drop' list if it doesn't pick up

Accel World 01 I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I like it! It has potential. I like the combination of real world/virtual world

Upottte! 01 Nope. This is clearly designed for people with a fetish for moe blobs and guns. What a load of old shite. Dropped :D

Usagi Drop I watched all of it! It's fantastic, glad GAF recommended this one. I'd say it's pretty much a must see for everyone. I heard some.. unusual things, about the manga going forward, which I will happily remain ignorant to

I feel an anime collection dick measuring contest brewing.
It's tempting.
It's at least a good excuse to post about a few things I just got today!

Haganai / I Have Hew Friends 1-12
This was the last show I was interested in from the fall season that I hadn't gotten to. Finally watched it about two weeks ago and love the characters, especially Sena (damn, girl, "perfect" is right) and Kobato (so adorable when she anxiously says "anchan"). The parody stuff was hilarious, having played both Monster Hunter and Tokimeki Memorial, and watched Sacred Blacksmith. And it has plenty of 2ch memes and other otaku humor that I'm a sucker for.

It barely edged out Horizon for my favorite show of the season and ended up being the only one to cross my "buy" threshold. Haganai is like the anti-Horizon, in that Horizon started out dull but got good later, whereas Haganai started out great but petered out a bit as it went on. Still, I found myself wanting to re-watch and visit the characters again, unlike Horizon where I just want to see the second season. (Probably more importantly, I don't care for Horizon's character art nearly as much.)

Some of the characters seemed to have suffered a little in the transition to a 12-episode novel advertisement, especially Maria, who was reduced to being a clown who shouts "poop" a lot, and Yukimura, who faded away into the background, but the others were great, funny, cute, and sexy. Usually I don't like so-called "harem" anime, but this one worked for me, probably because Kodaka was more of a Kyon-style observer than the central player, and the characters were more concerned with friendship than romance, at least on the surface. In any case, most of the harem tropes I find obnoxious weren't in it.

More than anything else the character art is gorgeous. I know there were mixed opinions from novel fans when the first visuals came out, and some people were saying Denpa Onna did it better, but I think Haganai did a great job of animating Buriki's characters. It's definitely done it's job in making me want to read the novels. (Or maybe one of those Buriki-illustrated ero-novels...)

Anyway, photos:

Inside & BDs

On-disc extras are text-less versions of the per-episode tailored ads for the BDs/PSP game. (Each episode had aired a different animated ad, based on that episode.)
And two audio commentary tracks: an in-character commentary written by the novel author (like the OreImo BDs) and a staff commentary.
Character song/drama CDs
Next to actual new animated content, drama CDs are probably my favorite bonus item, as they let me spend more time with the characters from the show. Third place would be episode audio commentary, and fourth is novellas by the novel author. This release has both drama CDs and audio commentary so I'm pretty pleased.
Victory Spark TCG cards
Buying all six BD volumes will provide a full deck's worth of cards, so you can play with your friends (if you have any. If you don't, you can enjoy them by taking photos to post on NeoGAF.)
Neighbors Club Activity Report booklets
Episode comments, character designs, eyecatch art, magazine promo art, and staff/cast interviews.

For dick-measuring purposes: Buying all 6 will cost the same as a Fate/Zero box. Naturally, most if not all of the extras will be missing from the North American plebeian release.

Aniplex USA is releasing Kara no Kyokai on DVD sometime... soon I think. So based on how they handle that release and the pricing on that, we should get a good idea of how they will handle Fate/Zero in a year or two.

I used to buy anime series at $30/dvd back in the day.. when Bebop was coming out one volume at a time.. Kenshin and Trigun cost me so much money..

I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on anime over the years..

Lately, I've stopped collecting Blu-ray discs and dvds for the most part.

I'll buy a handful of them.. or wait for super sale prices, but mostly I don't feel the need to own everything I even remotely liked anymore.

Having that much physical media just isn't practical in an apartment situation.

I made an exception for Fate/Zero and probably will for S2, the way its going so far.. but it's not something I will make a habit of. I'll need to clear room on my shelf for the F/Z S1 box as it is. It may be time to get rid of my dvd collection and weed out the Blu-ray collection too.

Oh, for anyone living in the UK, the dates for this years Scotland Loves Anime events have been announced as the 12th through the 14th of October for Glasgow, and the 19th through the 21st of October for Edinburgh.

No idea what's going to be screening yet, of course, except that it should be about eight (mostly duplicated) movies in each location. Last year they had Letter for Momo and Hotarubi no Mori E (with the producers, if you went to Glasgow) among a bunch of less interesting stuff (including a terrible VOTOMS compilation movie they screened simply as an excuse to get Takahashi over, who is an absolute legend). Year before that they had the European premier of the Haruhi movie, plus Redline, Trigun and some other neat stuff.

This year, to wager some guesses, I'd be shocked if the Tiger and Bunny movie isn't there (unless, as the organiser has off-handedly teased, he manages to swing a screening the day of the Japanese release). I wouldn't be surprised to see Blood-C either...

For those who don't fancy the trip up for Scotland, I gather that the BFI in London are doing an anime weekend at the beginning of June. Only thing announced for that thus far is the FMA:B movie (I gather the director is going to be there for a Q&A as well). The schedule for that should be available in two or three weeks, when the BFI publish their monthly programme booklet.

That's rather lame. I quite dislike this current trend where only the 1% can buy anime releases.
Actually it looks like things aren't any different than they've always been, if KnK is anything to go by.
It's getting a cheap N.A. DVD release now, a couple years after the Japanese BD release.
There's good odds the same will happen with Fate/Zero.

EDIT: Beaten by duckroll

Ookami Kodomo? That seems more likely than Blood-C imo.

Also worth noting that From Up On Poppy Hill has a screening this Friday as part of the London Terracotta Film Festival.

Possibly - I certainly hope so, but Hosoda's movies have a bit more of a prestige to them, which means there's a bit more competition in terms of being able to get the initial screening for the festival circuit. I know that last year they didn't get that Shinkai movie because the BFI swung it as the anime film for the London Film Festival a weeks later (which resulted in me taking a five hour train ride between the two events...).

Blood-C is partially just wishful thinking on my part (kind-of... I'm really not sure if I want to see that movie!).

Is the third Mardock Scramble supposed to be out this year? They totally had a Mardock Scramble 1 + 2 double bill last year.

Yeah, I was pulling out (what little) hair (I have remaining) at that announcement, as I've had an anime con booked in for this weekend for a while, otherwise I'd have totally made the trip down south to see it.

Yeah but the movie is opening in July in Japan. By October I imagine it would be expected to be a regular part of any festival internationally.
