After starting and catching up with Fate/Zero, I'm back to Penguindrum!

So I heard you guys like curry? Cow costume was awesome to the max. I can tell I'm not going to like Ringo much when she's
head over heels for Tabuki
but when she isn't she's fine. Speaking of
Tabuki, his girlfriend seems pretty cool.
Other than these points, it was fairly straightforward.

Yeah that's definitely bootlegged. Sad to see an official outlet selling that stuff, even if it is unknowingly.

That's rather lame. I quite dislike this current trend where only the 1% can buy anime releases.

To be honest with you I dont like Aniplex level pricing either. but as long as its limited to very special editions of a small number of series, I can deal with it.

Yeah. Honestly, it's as much force of habit for me at this point as anything - I've been watching this stuff since the 90's, when the only way I'd actually be able to see something was to actually buy it (usually on VHS, usually dubbed only). It continued through the age of easy-fansub access through a combination of habit and guilt-purchases for stuff I ended up watching all the way through.

I'm actually trying to get out of the habit these days, at least as far as the expensive Japanese disks go (the US/UK stuff isn't so bad in terms of cost). The exchange rate isn't anywhere near as favourable as it used to be, when picking up these things wasn't that much more than the US release (bearing in mind that's when they spread 26-episode shows across eight disks in the US). Heck, these days, where most the stuff I want to watch is streaming, the guilt isn't even there.

Once iM@S wraps up, and the second Fate box of course, I'll be calling the imports quit short of the occasional movie/OAV.

Kiddy Grade and Stellvia come to mind here. $30/disc X 8 discs. Not cheap. The packaging was really nice at least.

Also, BokuTomo :)p) needs to have some older teacher character to complete the character trope harem.

Later novel spoils:
index's older sister fits that role!

Was originally going to put this in my other post, but that one was getting long due to Haganai impressions.

Waiting in the Summer BD vol. 1
This I already posted impressions on while it was running, so no wall of text. It's tied with Bodacious Space Pirates for my favorite winter show. (I tried to buy the first BD for that, too, but it's on backorder everywhere. Hopefully later this month.)

BPOoL.jpg

(photo links)
Box contents
BD has text-less opening and ending.
Script book
With VA comments and doodles.
Soundtrack and Drama CD
Booklet
Similar to the Haganai one, with artwork and interviews.

Misc other stuff that came in the same order:
Animelo 2011 concert BDs and Kotoko CDs
Strike Witches 4-panel and anthology comics
Megami Magazine Deluxe vol. 18 w/Horizon poster
- NSFW I guess. Beats me. I work at home; everything is SFW. It's getting harder and harder to remember what the culture in the outside world is like...but I think I'll skip posting photos of the Hiiragi Elementary School Romance Club manga volumes that also came with this order. They're not anime-related, anyway.
The other side of that poster is Nanoha, which is something I really should watch one of these days. Maybe they'll release a good-quality BD box some time.

Now that I'd want.

I still find it annoying that the anime people here can't license or sub the drama cd bonuses. Even an insert that you can follow along with would be fine.

Are thingsl ike this subbed in english? because that may end up being my only option for a lot of shows to own them on disc.

Usually not, unfortunately. Outside of Ghibli films, very few Japanese-market anime releases have English subs. It's particularly irritating now, since Japan and North America are the same region for Blu-ray, which could not be said for DVDs.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia 01 Wasn't half bad! There's a big shovel of generic dumped on top of something that has potential. Hopefully there's less derp and more mystery in future episodes. I like how they repeated the scenes showing the ghost. It looks pretty too. I have a feeling it will turn into a mess but I'll be there to watch it happen at least

Yeah this language barrier is pretty much what prevents me from importing. If I knew the language, no problem, but it is a particularly difficult language to learn. I've started to pick up on some basics just from watching years of anime, but not nearly enough to watch even the most simple narration and understand it.

Not usually. It's becoming increasingly common for Sunrise works (Gundam Age, Sacred Seven, Tiger&Bunny and Horizon all have subtitles), and for some reason Seven Arcs stuff (Dogs Days, the Nanoha movie) does, and obviously it's becoming increasingly common for Aniplex.

Generally, though, it doesn't happen, which is increasingly frustrating when we know that subtitles do exist for the foreign market due to streaming deals.

Saki Achiga-hen: Episode of Side-A 1 - Now, this was great, as expected. It's just like the manga, but animated... which means it was really good! :)

However, I do want to say something first. The proper name is Saki Achiga-hen, not Saki: Episode of Side-A. The Achiga part is more important than the last part, because it describes where the series is taking place, Achiga. "Episode of Side-A" is a reference to the fact that this story is about a team on the other side of the national tournament bracket from the side that Saki's Kiyosumi is on; Kiyosumi is on side B in the national tournament, while Achiga, and Saki's sister Teru's school, are on side A. That is, once this serise gets to the national tournament of course, but given the extremely fast pace of this series, that won't take all that long.

On that note, yes, this episode's fast paced. It's pretty much the same as the manga, in zipping through multiple years quickly, but it covers the most important stuff. I do wish that they had multiple episodes to fill in on the events the club did when they were younger, before the first timeskip, but obviously they don't have that time. Oh well. :(

On that note, this first episode has a timeskip late in the episode, and covers three years of school. It's clearly separated, though -- when the timeskip happens there is text on the screen saying what school year it is now, and of course the characters look older, so it's not confusing. But yeah, the main character, Shizuno, starts out as a 6th grader, then there's a timeskip to the end of 9th grade, then she moves to 10th). The beginning part sets the stage, as friends Shizuno, Ako, Kuro, and Nodoka (in an appearance from before she moved to Kiyosumi's area) play around in a mahjong club at the Achiga girls' academy school in their town. The club's run by a college student who used to be a good mahjong player in high school, but lost and then got out of it for years, running this club as a sort of therapy.

Oh, and Nodoka...
in clothes like that, how is "frilly" not appropriate?

However, while they all had fun, time passed, and life intervened...
The club leader was scouted by a corporate team and took the job, Nodoka moved away, and Ako went do a different middle school. Yeah, cue sadness, parting, and cherry blossoms.

Three years later, Shizuno's watching TV, and happens to tune in just as Nodoka wins the middle school championship, as referenced at the beginning of Saki. This inspires her to want to go to the national championship in order to play against her. (Why doesn't she just call, or send a letter, or something? Well... this IS a mahjong show, after all! And she wants to compete with mahjong, not just words.). She chooses Achiga as her high school, and once there reforms what's left of the club. Now, for ep. 2, they need to find two more members, and maybe a coach (Kiyosumi doesn't have one of course, though their captain is more than capable of doing the job) in order to be able to compete. Good luck!

Now, for the characters, Shizuno is a somewhat prototypical lead character -- she doesn't get great grades, is generally optimistic, etc -- but she's also a Saki-universe character, so unless she's in her school uniform, all she ever wears is a black jacket and shoes. Ako, her childhood friend, hasn't had much characterization yet, apart from being there, and
obviously caring enough about her old friends to go to Achiga even though she wanted to go to a different high school which has a great mahjong program and always wins. She went here instead, in order to win with them...
. Kuro's a little older than Shizuno and Ako, and she's the first one clearly with a special power --
all the dora go to Kuro.
Sort of like the captain from Saki, she'd been waiting for her chance to build a club again and compete for the first time... I don't think she's a senior though. Second year I believe.

And of course, there are several more characters to come
including the girl who wears a scarf all the time
, plus some appearances from main-series characters
(I noticed that Momo and Yumi are in the ED, along with the Kiyosumi characters, etc, for instance)
. Also mahjong, expect plenty of mahjong action! The mahjong games in this episode were good, Kuro and Shizuno both did quite well.

Oh, and as for fanservice and yuri-baiting, as expected from the manga, there's not as much of it as the main Saki series has. Well, for the latter there is some stuff involving Nodoka, of course. :) (As for the former, mostly Shizuno, in this episode.)

Finally, past the credits, there's a little scene with Nodoka and Yuki, set around the same time as one of the Saki picture dramas, going by the clothes Nodoka and Yuki had on (the drawn but not animated bonus stories included on the DVDs).
So Nodoka did still think about Shizuno, even if she never managed to send that letter...

Overall, yes, it's great. Definitely watch this! I would recommend watching the main Saki anime first, because of all the references in Achiga to Saki, and because it is a spinoff... it'll just make more sense that way. However, it does stand on its own as well. So yeah, watch whether or not you've seen Saki! Then watch that too.

Hmm, if the Saki adaptation does add detail, I'm pleasantly surprised by GONZO's competence. I appreciate it when the studio goes the extra step to make the anime something more unique and a separate entity from the manga, instead of just an animated carbon copy. If only they hadn't gone bankrupt...Hopefully this Studio Gokumi will do Achiga-hen justice as well.
Gonzo actually went under during the season, so they didn't finish the Saki adaptation, a studio made of ex-Gonzo people finished it I believe...

As for Achiga, I think ep. 1 didn't add as much as Saki did, but we'll see. It was pretty good at least!

I guess Saki's characterisation is to not stand out so it kind of makes sense. It's like how she tries to maintain a zero score in Mahjong, not winning or losing in order not to attract attention. Wearing a maid skirt is pretty noticeable.
True, I agree with that. Also, that happens early in the season; she's not entirely out of her "try to not win" habits yet at that point. I just think that specifically saying that it's short was funny when her uniform skirt's the same. he should have just said that it's embarrassing.

I don't think anyone who watched this show doesn't think of the yuri undertones. It's not like it's very subtle.
True, it's quite blatant in the main series. I'm not sure if it's quite as obvious in Achiga, though... well, it sort of is, I just don't know if any of the Achiga five like eachother like Saki and Nodoka do.
And as for Shizuno/Nodoka... she'll have trouble getting her away from Saki, I think. :)

Yay, another Saki bro.

Hope there's another food they can cross-promote.
Maybe, maybe not. We'll see.

Saki Episode of Side A - 01

Well that was... odd, it felt like they rushed through alot in such a short space of time, the transitions for the significant timeskips were done in such a way I had to figure out that they had actually grown up from elementary school to middle school and suss out when they were in their third year of middle school, overall it's an insignificant gripe me having to fill in the gaps myself but it was a little distracting despite being a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.
There was text on screen that said when the timeskip happened, and which year of school they were now in -- you must have missed it, but it was definitely there. You're right that there is a timeskip, from 6th to 9th grades for Shizuno and Ako (with Kuro being one year ahead of them), but it's done fairly decently and it's not hard to tell that it happened.

Because I'm in a mood to watching all sorts of sports anime, I may as well stick with this and see how they do Mahjong, although my first mahjong experience in anime was Legend of Koizumi so... this is going to be weird. :lol
Hopefully it inspires you to watch the original Saki series. :) Yes, it's good!

And then they barely see eachother for the next three years, before finally living up to that promise.

And yep, we get crazy again:
5YVnxl.png

I can't help but wonder if this prequel was inspired by
Chihayafuru
because the set ups are so similar.
You have three main characters who know each other in elementary school but then get split up through various means, only for two of them to come back together for high school and form a club by themselves. And basically, Nadoka becomes Arata, a motivating figure for the two real main characters of the show.
The only thing its missing is the fab soundtrack really.
I think it's as much like Saki as it is like Chihayafuru. I mean, it is like that show, but it's also somewhat like Saki in that in Saki, Saki wants to to to the national tournament in order to play against Teru, her sister who she's been separated from, while in Achiga, Shizuno wants to go in order to play against Nodoka, who she has been separated from too (though without the animosity of Saki/Teru).

So crazy.
Some of the Achiga girls do have special powers, yes. :)

Interestingly enough, to me anyway, this seems to happen in parallel to the actual Saki series, so presumably the climax of both series would be having the characters of both series meet at some point. I can already see the manga crossover possibilities!
Parallel? Actually, the very ending of this episode happens about even with the beginning of episode one of the original Saki anime, and it begins ~4 years before that. Yeah, it does have a much faster pace than Saki, that's for sure... but it's a spinoff, and has to get to the national tournament in order to live up to its subtitle, and they probably only have 12-13 episodes to do it in, so not much could be done about that unfortunately. Of course I wish they had the time for a slower, more detailed series, but they don't. :(

They probably make enough money from licensers not to do that. Although, they probably would make more money if they killed anime licensing and forced everyone in the world to buy direct from Japan!

They start high school the same time that Saki meets Nodaka, I presume. So... it's all happening at the same time, I presume.

Slightly different, IMO, because people see America as being "English" - you don't expect Spanish subs as a matter of course. "Europe" means at least 5 major languages, and most of European video is PAL or SECAM rather than the NTSC format that the US and Japan use (which made more of a difference in the DVD age).

It's a Christmas movie! The movie is very deliberate in the way that it creates this string of coincidences, it's aware that they don't make sense 'in the real world'. It isn't trying to go for normality.
It also works as a homage to old american christmas movies like It's a wonderful life
