The Light of El Cantare
The changes to the story were weeeeeird.... It's probably a milestone and hype for the new live-action Kenshin movie.

The one really strange change that I noticed was
Shishio killing Usui
. I know that they're not going to have time for most of the
Juppongatana fights
, but why?

So how did Anime Gaf feel about the return of Toonami, if not for only a night?

I'd probably be more nostalgiac if I hadn't rewatched DBZ, Gundam Wing, etc. long after they'd aired on Toonami, but it was sooooo nice hearing Steve Blum's voice again.

I watched Toonami too, but it's 2012 now. I have no need for a programming block like that and don't understand why anyone would want it to return as a delivery mechanism for shows they are already familiar with that have no appeal to a wider audience.

It's more to do with the delivering wrapping than it is with the shows themselves. I don't care if Gurren-Lagann, Durarara, or some other modern shows were subbed in instead, so long as the selection was well-curated and fit an overarching message that is now largely missing from children's programming.

By the way, way to imply that anybody with nostalgia had a shitty childhood. Great job.

The nostalgia factor is one thing, but it would be interesting to see them begin to show more recent shows.

I think that for a lot of people, CNs Toonami and the shows that they played, had a big part in their introduction to anime.

Toonami opened my eyes.

It felt like a significant step up from watching stuff like Cow & Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo etc to stuff like DBZ, Teknoman, Tench Muyo, Cowboy Bebop etc.

Sadly my parents were potato couch guardians of the TV so I only had anime crumbs every now and then when I was little. ;_; Watching Tenchi and Bebop now would be like watching them for the first time, much like Cardcaptors and Sailormoon.

Would that be the thing that gets people in this thread watching stuff like Toriko? How many people here interested in Toonami would stick with it when the scheduling block looks more like that?

I'm not saying that Toonami excuses the actual content of a show. But as a curated, organised programming block, it's representative of a type of anime I rarely see these days, but still enjoy a great deal.

To be honest, I don't think Toonami would appeal to most of us past the nostalgia factor. I was thinking more in terms of bringing in a whole new audience. I don't really know how the next generation of American kids get exposed to anime.

soz :( I couldn't resist.

They give me character ;)

Shiba Inuku-san 1

Half of the episode was a Recorder to Randoseru DVD/BRD ad, haha. So classy.

Thought it was amusing. I did laugh at that ME3 crack at one of the commercials and it was good for a nostalgia blast.

Well it got people interested in Bleach so it had to be good.

Otherwise cool

Guilty to that. It is probably more likely now that the anime actually ended that increases my willingness to watch it someday.

My nostalgia of toonami isn’t really anime related cause I had already seen most of the animes on toonami to death long before the channel had come out, the ones I haven’t weren’t any good like (gundam wing, tenchi muyo ),the enjoyable ones I haven’t seen like pokemon, beyblade , yugi-oh,cowboy bebop, digimon were on other channels.

I mostly loved toonami for stuff like samura jack, but I do think toonami died at the right time and should never come back , anime is near complete filth in its current state and should never be allowed to infect anymore innocent people.

Space Brothers Ep.01

Thick eyebrows are sexy and as long as this doesn't
focus on the alien thing
, I could see it having some potential.

Space Bros was really good. Characters! Actual, likeable, adult characters! In a vaguely realistic setting! And yet this is a show clearly targetted at children from its educational bumpers and timeslot![/QUOTE]

I don't really get that, it's pretty weird. I can only hope the show doesn't collapse under the weight of two dangerous tropes:

'the younger brother does better than the older one' and the extremely dangerous 'chase your dream'.
Great OP.
Clearly they should have gone with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPn-lTytfGo

This is the first time I've watched any dubbed Bleach in years, and Muramasa's dub voice was terrible beyond my wildest expectations. I can't believe they're even bothering to dub the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales arc.

No, we are not. There are many expressions available to you, but "hnngh" is one you'll have to do without.

Worryingly, I've seen it used outside the anime and manga threads. It's influence is spreading. The English language must be saved.

Toonami wasn't as relevant in Mexico because most of the shows they aired were re-runs of stuff we had already seen on public telly. So meh.

The Blu-ray box also adds a number of scenes that were cut for running time, and uncensors quite a bit of material. However, they weren't willing to go to the effort of subtitling the extra material (Einzbern Consultation Room or whatever).

Wow.. They didn't subtitle the extra material? That is incredibly disappointing.. One less reason to spend the money for the box.

Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto-hen Pt. 1

I fail to see why this even exists. It's the absolute bare shell of Kenshin's fantastic Kyoto arc and, apart from a couple of unimportant plot alterations, doesn't take the story in a particularly different direction. Was this made to celebrate some milestone anniversary for the manga? Because if it isn't, the rationale for bringing the Kenshin franchise back from the dead solely for this lifeless one-off production escapes me.

Can I say anything at all about this? It had lush backgrounds, the animation was solid, and, uhh...that's pretty much it. The modernized, homogenized overhauls of Watsuki's character designs are pretty off-putting. Kenshin is more bishounen than ever. Misao's role was oddly prominent. Apparently her stock has risen in the past decade thanks to her being an adolescent girl. For real this time, I'm out of things to say. Don't bother watching it.

Yep, pretty much how I felt after watching it. It's for the 15th anniversary or something (there's also a live-action movie coming out this year too), but it still feels completely redundant, the changes they made were completely pointless, etc. Quick, let's remove a whole bunch of plot because we can't fit it into a 45 minute OVA, but let's add a
softcore sex scene with Shishio and Yumi lulz
because apparently we can fit that in. >>;;

This is clearly true, it obviously connected with a specific generation of fans.

Personally, I saw very little anime on television as I was growing up, or at least nothing that I consciously identified as anime. This is why I didn't get into anime until relatively recently.

Why anyone would willingly descend into the shithole that is animu is beyond me.

Space Bros

Just as good as I hoped it would be. LIttle touches like Zidane help make it feel really grounded and more real than you usually find in anime. Since it's fifty episodes, it isn't going to be particularly fast paced, but it succeeded in keeping my interest.

I had a whole week to prepare, but my cardiac muscle was still not ready, how I'm still alive after the first ten minutes, I'll never know.

This is what I really want from it. I guess that might be ironic...
