Apparently there are actual anime scholars out there who have taken time to do actual research on these subjects and compile their findings into actual book-length texts. Jexhius, erudite hobbyist that he is, has actually purchased and read some of these books. No subject is too taboo for the inquiring mind!
Some questions require repeat viewings, but that's the fun! Utena is a densely packed, highly rewatchable show.
Honey & Clover for some college high jinks, art and wondering what they'll do post college. Mongolian Chop Squad Beck for high school comedy revolving around music.
Woodcutter's wife predates that. Pretty sure, I'd attribute the tentacle rape genre to an obscenity case where the guy won and went on to make La Blue Girl.

Initial Impressions; Hate, hate, hate the character designs. Those faces will haunt my dreams. So bad. I just find them super unpleasing to look at it. Backgrounds and colors, on the other hand look freaking amazing. So gorgeous. That kind of evens things out on a visual end. Music is really weird (in a good way?).
Story wise, episode was pretty standard and super boring. Don't really care about the story or characters at all. Hate the rabbit-cat thing.
Overall, walking away with a negative impression so far, but given the near universal love from AnimeGaf I'm absolutely sure this show is not at all what it seems to be. Not passing any real judgments right now. So, guys, without spoiling, about how long until the show starts showing its true colors? How much longer do I have to endure this standard, boiler-plate Magical Girl style story?

Nothing about that first scene seemed all that outside of the typical magical girl stuff. A bit darker, maybe, but not by much. Just your basic "girl who can save the world gets a premonition on how to change the future". Pretty standard anime right there. Well, we shall see.

You don't know what it means just yet.
As for the character designs, just not my style. I don't fault people FOR liking them. I don't see anything about them technically poorly executed for the style it's attempting, I just don't like that character style much.
I went into the first episode expecting it to be pretty standard. Given the reactions, it seems like a show that needs to start off like a normal genre series before completely turning it on it's head. Glad I don't need to wait long for it to get good.

Girls love and hugging, we deal with a tall girl who doesn't have a complex about being tall, but rather looking feminine, with the SOaSsholes making her cry. She's not a gorilla. All about teasing and bullying, although, frankly, I find it odd at the fact that at the beginning, she fucking tackles them, grabs all three of them by the neck, and starts choking them.
She's choking them, they couldn't even BREATHE, and Doremi and friends just cheered her on to practically choke all three of them to death. This is some deep shit here.

I think the darker tone is obvious from the beginning, but it's the details of how it plays out what surprises the audience. You don't automatically think decapitation and ALIENS VS ENTROPY just from a mysterious and foreboding mood.
