I asked this once before in here but forgot to come back and read the responses,

Can anyone recommend comedy-ish college/highschool animes? I'm watching Oreimo but it's not really my thing. It's definitely funny but the story is kind of boring to me.

Genshiken if you're into subtler forms (well... relative...) of comedy

Shades of Makoto.

ITS ONLY OKAY IF YOU'RE CHEERING FOR SOMEONE TO CHOKE THEM BUT NOT WHEN ONE OF YOURS IS DOING IT!

See, that image and the suicidal image is what broke me out of my hiatus. That and the sudden influx of watchers.

Futari wa Precure Splash Star 21

Well, Michiru and Kaoru ran out of other villains to do their dirty work for them, so they've got to get out there and do active villaining now. Or they could join the Cures and friends for a stargazing party. That also works.

Kaoru seems extra dismissive of the funtime antics today. Her response to pretty much everything is like, "what's the point?" or "I don't care." At a glance, you'd think she was actually getting into her villainous role and looking down on the meaningless interests of mere human scum. But I know the real reason. She's just bitter that Minori wasn't invited to the party. I can understand this. Really, what is the point in anything without Minori?

Michiru seems a little more into it, but that's pretty understandable too, because she's crazy for Saki, not Minori. Can I just say "best sisters ever x most tsundere villains ever" is, like, the official pairing of this show at this point? Also Michiru is the moon villain and this is a stargazing party. You go figure.

But eventually, the Almighty Precure Law of One Monster Per Episode gets the better of our two tsundere villains, and they kind of float up to stand in front of the moon, where Michiru summons an Uzaina from a piece of space rock. The Precure are all like "oh no you didn't" (at no-one in particular because they haven't spotted who summoned the Uzaina) and then proceed to deliver a beatdown on grounds that DUDE WE'RE NOT LETTING YOU NEAR OUR FRIENDS. THAT MEANS MICHIRU AND KAORU. MICHIRU AND KAORU ARE OUR FRIENDS. HAVE WE TUGGED AT THE VILLAINS' HEARTSTRINGS ENOUGH TODAY YET?

So Michiru and Kaoru are all like omg they're fighting for us *SWOON* before reverting to i-it's not like we don't want to kill you or anything! baka!

And then at the end of the episode Mai spots a few key details, puts two and two and two together, and is all like "ohmygod I think Michiru and Kaoru might be the bad guys o.o" Man, on their first proper mission too. These villain girls just can't catch a break, can they?

Utena > Evangelion

Those are bold words. As established here, I think Eva is pretty damn brilliant, mostly for the fan trolling and Anno's otaku hatred rather than any depth to the the story itself. If half you've said about Utena is true, you are going to be my best friend for recommending it.

Suicidal image?
School Days is the Oedipus Rex of anime.

Forgot what it was, but it looked depressing. I think it was from the beginning of Sharp

This small arc makes me sad.

Woodcutter's wife predates that. Pretty sure, I'd attribute the tentacle rape genre to an obscenity case where the guy won and went on to make La Blue Girl.

Well, while the work often titled in the west as "The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife" certainly pre-dates all of anime I doubt that's the root cause. The laws that censored explicit drawings of genitalia didn't come around until one hundred years later which then, it is argued, forced those creating pornography to use items such as tentacles because those didn't fall foul of the censorship regime.

Moreover, Urotsukidōji, known in the west as Legend of the Overfiend, predates La Blue Girl by some years and is by far the most famous and influential work to feature tentacle pornography.

Madoka Magica 01

Initial Impressions; Hate, hate, hate the character designs. Those faces will haunt my dreams. So bad. I just find them super unpleasing to look at it.

This was my initial impression of Madoka when it first aired. I couldn't understand why anyone would want faces that looked so weird and wide.

By the end of the series, I loved the designs. Now I'm watching Hidamari for the delicious Ume characters and swooning over Yuno. (Or at least I would be if Precure wasn't taking up all of my backlog attention.)

I wonder if you'll come round like I did.

The post is half in jest because they are very different shows, but I think Utena's "goodness" can be explained without having to resort to the realm of "meta", and that ultimately makes it the more complete experience.

Don't forget there's that thing this afternoon.

How to do nothing for 4 episodes in a row.

I Just cannot believe the way this show has crashed and burned after its stellar beginning.

Evangelion's quality goes beyond the "meta"; it's a genuinely great show. Utena is, too; but it's not like Evangelion itself is an incomplete experience or anything of the stort. There is no need to think about the context to understand what makes the original Evangelion so excellent.

I think Eva is in fact great, but the meta ends up far outstripping the basic quality of the show. Also, the fanbase over analyzing the plot and acting like it's way more amazing and has far more depth than it does is annoying and plays right into Anno's point. That's not saying a straight, non-meta reading of Eva doesn't have thematic depth. It certainly does. It just doesn't have the depth most super fans who take it straight like to claim it does.

Oh, definitely. What I meant to say is that Utena is self-contained, and so you can enjoy it in its entirety without ever being aware of the fan reaction to the show.

This is also the correct answer whenever someone brings up a manga they'd like to see animated which has already had a TV series made of it.

All shoujo manga then. lol

From Honey & Honey, I thought someone might find this interesting:

Using the family register to screw the system is an inventive way to get around the problem.

I wonder why they went with a sci-fi setting... not that i mind, it's pretty cool.

The fact that is an adaptation of a 1844 book kinda makes hard for me to know what to expect, though.
How many of the fantasy/sci-fi elements are there because they look cool and how many are plot related? (unless the original work had fantasy elements too, but as far i know, it isn't the case)

It's nearly entirely window dressing but some elements are important.

OK I looked it up and see that there is a 24 episode Fate/Stay Night anime.

Is it worth watching? I assume it is similar to Fate/Zero which I loved.

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry. You have seen the only worthwhile part of the Fate franchise.

Warning the post below is meta

Elder-Sister companionships. It's gonna be big.

My roommate calls BS.

But my roommate is also what some might call "Molly"

Incidentally I think that would be incredibly cool what you mentioned if it's true, because I'm planning on leaving for my mission in a handful of months here.

Also sorry, I'm not coming back for Fall Semester Corvo ):

Everyone got old.. Although I like PenguinDrum substantially more than Rebuild.

Rebuild is far weaker, just because a straight interpretation is boring, depthless and confusing as all hell.

As a meta piece where Anno is just screwing with people, I still adore it and find it a joy to watch. It's far weaker because it's not a good show in and of itself like the original, but it's still damn fun.

Even in Meta-content Utena not inferior to EVA, reading Ikuhara's various interview about Utena are mindblowing.

Arc like Black Rose arc also some hardcore-meta stuff.

Same artist. But I can't find a reference to the case, just that he did it to circumvent obscenity laws.

He's certainly not called the Tentacle Master for nothing. If you follow him on twitter all he seems to do is talk about his cats.
