Exactly, which is why I think that it's would be a good thing if the thread slowed down in the next few days. Anyone casually checking into the thread at the moment who isn't used to the kind of content that gets discussed within might just assume that it's all fairly vapid, when in fact that there's plenty of interesting comments and discussions within, as well lots of of enjoyable arguments about favourite characters and so forth. It's just important not to skew too far in a direction where there's far too much 'noise'.

That description is pretty apt for Sword of Truth. On the whole, it is the most dreadful experience of a series with the most contrived bullshit ending I've ever read in a good long while. At best it contains some interesting ideas regarding magic which are never fully explained but mainly it is essentially bad fantasy mixed with a ridiculous amount of softcore pornography.

This is why everyone should read Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain instead. Because it's a lovely romp through fantasy Wales with a heart warming story about a boy growing up and becoming a hero. And also a flaming sword, horned king, death lord, and of course, an oracular pig.

What? To me the MC from Henneko's like the least realistic harem character of them all. He's totally stripped of his facade and completely acts the way he wants, which is apparently a total pervert/asshole, and still doesn't get anywhere with the girls! What the hell was the point of his wish? Does he really just want to sit at home and masturbate to porn mags all day or something?

I've often said, although not lately, that while a good deal of writing about anime can be found on the internet most of it is unremarkable and some of it is simply garbage. However, there is a few blogs that are worth keeping up with. Here's a roundup of articles worth checking out:
- concretebadgers post about Aku no Hana. He/she also has a fairly good post about Nadia but he/she casually spoils something I'd consider a fairly major revelation so I wouldn't recommend that you read that particular post at all.
- sdshamshel has a fairly good explanation of differentiates Girls und Panzer from other titles in the same ilk.
- Brian regularly posts out posts which contain images from a variety of shows in a given year allowing you to get a taste for what anime looked like in that time period. His post about 1993 is here.
- Helen McCarthy considers how Miyazaki handles the concept of death here.
- For those of you with a bit of time on your hands and who'd like a bit of a history lesson should keep up to date with the Golden Ani-Versary blog, which "Starting in January with 1963 and ending in June with 2012, Golden Ani-Versary will bring you the thoughts and musings from anime bloggers and writers all around the world about what made anime such a memorable commodity. Every week we will introduce a new year, chronologically in order to the best of our extent, and present the titles that defined that year. "
- This isn't really anime related, although he has written about anime before, but anyone with a passing interest in film form and the visual language of film should keep up to date with the Acephalous blog. His dissections of individual episodes of Mad Men, Game of Thrones and many other works always make me feel like I'm barely scratching the surface with my own analysis.

I disagree, because hes being actually changed by events in the show. His normal self seems fairly realistic.

So in this episode Lina freaks out over some slugs, which I thought funny, because this girl killed the Dark Lord but icky things still, well, ick her out. While freaking out, she turns to Gourry (totally no feelings for him) and cries for her mom, dad, and then sister. Lina's sister's only been brought up a couple times, and she kind of reminds me of Eddy's brother from Ed, Edd n Eddy. Hopefully Lina's sister doesn't suck as much.
Then there was some Zelgadis and Amelia teasing.
Then a creepy scene where a mad scientist revived his bride but she Came Back Wrong.

I don't know that I would go that far, but at the very least he has some sort of personality beyond obvious wish-fulfillment fantasy stand-in.
I wonder if maybe harem mc's are so far gone that any time they react anywhere close to realistically I consider them tolerable.

I'll give you the character's changed somewhat, sad that that's a thing that's rare but, I still think he sucks.
For one, his competence. Yes, he does seem to not be a total moron but I'm having trouble deciding if he's just smart or if they've made all the girls around him exceptionally stupid.
I already stated I just don't get his initial motivations. It all seemed to basically boil down to "I just want to check out the chicks and instead the Captain thinks I'm hard working and threw more responsibility on me," to which he decided that of all the things he could do to avoid such things he wished instead to be able to express his perverted desires. Ok, looks like he's not so competent.
Then he's apparently a healthy young boy interested in girls who, seemingly, wants nothing to do with any of them? All the girls he interacts with were initially just to get his facade back, yeah, ok. :shrug:
And like I said, he is kind of an asshole, having erotic thoughts is one thing, when your initial instinct is to call a girl flat you're an ass.
