STALKER: Clear Sky - review thread

On DX10 at 1920x1080 everything maxed + full AA it runs quite well on my 4870x2. Definitely better than Crysis at very high, which is already a pretty solid 30 fps for me with the 8.9 beta drivers. The only time when there was a huge fps drop was at the very beginning in the clear sky base. Once I left the framerate jumped up and kept even after I returned there several times after.

does its looks justify the performance hit?

pfft those reviewers are looking for a bloomed up piece of shit next gen game that they're used to. Stalker is the last true PC game. The rest is console garbage

except the reviewers have said how much they loved Stalker and how bad this game is in comparison to Stalker. try reading, it helps.

another review, PCgamer (so no "console garbage" here) 6.8/10. exactly the same complaints. faction warfare is broken, grenades & enemy spam, quicksave all the time, boring dungeons, getting money is just a grind, no atmosphere.

thing was, they had to rush SoC out the door with a bunch of features removed because THQ got impatient. CS is basically the game they wanted to release with all the features they cut

this is the second review to remark that not having THQ's influence was probably a bad idea:

As it is, Stalker: Clear Sky remains a remarkable misstep by the Ukrainian developers, and one that does not reflect well on their original game, or their independence from original publishers, THQ. We can only hope that their next effort will be more controlled.

Some of the design choices just seem bizarre, PDA shows you everything on the map, and I mean everything. Even where all the enemies are, how is a game supposed to scare you when you know where the enemy is.

From reading the reviews, it does sound like a lot of things should be easy for someone to mod, or maybe GSC will listen to everyone and fix them in a patch. I'll probably get it on launch anyway, not exactly that expensive and I have faith in the mod community.

Who cares about characters aslong as we have the "Get out of here, stalker"-guy.

HAHA. I remember first getting to the bar area and stumbling around the area lost as all hell. I must have heard that guy a million times.

get out of heer stalkair

I just almost finished Stalker, but decided to load up the witcher again. I am past the part that I stopped at the first time I loaded it :lol and I fucking love this game. Alchemy is kinda bullshit though.

Sounds like they dropped the ball. STALKER had potential, but I found the original too irritating due to the overly sensitive AI (among other problems). Rather than fixing any of those issues, however, they've created a whole slew of new ones to go along with them.

For the record, the overly sensitive AI wasn't a problem in so much that it made the game difficult, rather, it completely ruined the atmosphere of so many areas. The game simply used too many enemies at once and constantly flooded the player with them. Furthermore, stealth was nearly impossible. I simply couldn't enjoy exploring anything as you'd quickly be hit with hoards of enemies. Just wasn't any fun for me despite the fact that I loved everything else about its concept.

Based on the reviews, it sounds like quite a lot of the problems are easily fixable.

The last two (DX9 vs DX10 on the highest possible setting) are virtually identical.

Yeah, the only difference I can see is about twice the amount of ground foliage in that shot, everything else looks identical, including the shadows and lighting. Of course that is a very far zoomed out shot and it's outdoors, so maybe different shots and indoor shots would show more difference?

im staring at clearsky right now in walmart. Thnking of getting it. Could they patch the problems later?

My friend told me the same exact thing! Huntington, WV if you are nearby!

I will accept a free copy for giving you this secret information!
:D

i love the original so much. i just started it again for a second playthrough (on veteran) on saturday and ive already made it to the power plant.

im getting clear sky no matter what the reviews say. i dont nearly expect it to live up to the original, so maybe ill be pleasantly surprised that way.

here they were before they got pulled off the shelves. :lol
i was on the cashier and when they scanned it, it showed not to be sold and the cashier gave me the whole getting fined for breaking street date. sigh

I got the same response. Visited both local Wal Marts, they gave the same "Not Allowed For Sale" message at the register and then they pulled all the copies off the shelves.

:lol :lol :lol
If anyone works at a place that has Clear Sky, put it out and do this when someone brings it up please, preferably with video evidence.

:lol Not that we didn't expect this to happen, but patch 1.01 has just been released. It's still pretty funny nonetheless. Hopefully this patch is already integrated into the Steam release whenever that comes out.

Why choose? With Warhead at $30 and Clear Sky at $40, it shouldn't be too tough to find a place to buy both for only slightly over the cost of a single 360/ps3 game.

Anyone planning on making an official thread, or we just going to use this one? Anyway, got the game today and I'll grab some shots once I get done installing RivaTuner.

I respect Valve. Steam is a delivery system- and they choose to be flexible to what publishers want to do. But this is getting stupid. It seems that everyone is doing it now- how long before indies start putting a couple of extra bucks on their games for certain territories?

I give it 3-6 months before they patch the loophole that lets NA gamers gift EU people games at the lower rate. (Nintendo did on the virtual console, by buying from the Australian store at a lower price)

I've got a question about Shadow of Chernobyl, and I thought I'd ask in this thread instead of bumping some old one. I just installed the original game and I'm thinking that I should patch it. But where do I start? Which patch? The first one, or is is included in the latest? Help a PC noob out here! :O

Im on 1.005 I think it is.

Anyways, you needs mods, thats what you need.

Float32
Oblivion lost
sharper textures

and your set.

EDIT: This seems to be one of the better float32's, dont get the latest one.

http://www.thefloatingpoint.org/main/download.php?view.19

I heard Float32 makes the game harder as well as better-looking, is that correct?

I haven't played STALKER yet (I plan to use ordinary patches and maybe float32...thanks for the specific link), but I'd suggest waiting on Oblivion lost. I heard it's cool, but it's also a good bit different from the normal game, right?

Here is Oblivion Lost and what it does. As for float 32, its purely visual, no gameplay changes from what I know.

INTERACTIVE FACTION WARS
- Well, it was a very rare event in the previous version, now you have events probably every day, maybe twice a day, it's random, but it won't mess up the storyline, it's based on that and fits into it. It means there are some restrictions which block some events at the earlier stages of the game.
The AMK Offline Alife inspirated me to make this feature, but it's very different, it's main purpose is the battles between factions and mutants. For example you are in Cordon, you have an onscreen message about an event from the Bar.
You go to the Bar, and fight with Duty against their enemies, or maybe you will loot their corpses if you go to there too late. So events will happen in the another levels, where you aren't there.
Helicopters and BTR's are also added to the random events.
A lot of faction wars stalkers wear new weapons, so if you are lucky, there is a chance to obtain new weapons, instead of buying them from traders. There is a chance to meet a rare stalker in certain levels. Of course, the whole game is rebalanced and fit into these features.

DAY-NIGHT CYCLE ANOMALY BEHAVIOUR
- The dynamic anomalies feature was already included, but only after blowouts. Now the anomalies are moving during day, they are aggressive, and don't accept artifacts for transmutations, but at night they become calmed down, don't move out from their positions, and the artifact transmutation works until the next morning, they accept them.
Of course, you can disable this feature manually in olp_mod.script, set the anoms variable to false, and it will stop their movement at day and the transmutation will work during the whole day, not only at nights.
There are anomalous zones where they can appear, not everywhere, so it won't kill important npc's and won't block important pathways.

RANDOM WEATHER
- Now there are 3 weather presets, not only one, and it's random. Also after blowout you'll have massive fog and storms, but this will switch back to normal weather after a while. Of course, you'll never see suddenly sky switches, and also added more fog and rain, but those are also random.

NEW WEAPONS
- ZM LR300 ML, Benelli M3 Short, Bizon, P90, FN2000 prototype, Kriss Super V, Ingram MAC10, MG3, MP7, OTS-33, PKM, PPSH-41, Saiga12c, Steyr TMP, TEC-9.
Most of them not available at traders, you need to find them somewhere in the Zone.

Credits: The LR300, the MG3 and the PPSH made by Dester and Zereset for Arsenal Mod.
The Saiga12c made by tambovsky and his team. The PKM made by Gosuke.

The other weapons originally made by the Counter Strike Source Community from the FPSBanana site, and ZEN animated them and made compatible with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for his ZENOBIAN Mod.
The models and textures created by: Twinke Masta, Thanez, cryomerk, readersdigest, Millenia, Pete, Schmung, the_tub, SureShot, DarkElfa®, RedRogueXIII, SilentAssassin12, Logger, Dav0r, Downloadable Skillz, Kimono, GigantoR, Kurgan, Rionname.

Don't play Oblivion Lost your first time through, just play the game with like sky4ce, S.H.A.R.P.E.R textures and maybe the endurance mod, and once you've finished the game and know what you're doing come back and try Oblivion Lost.

i didn't like how oblivion lost made my game look.. really shitty looking shadows that were fully black/dark at all times. Looked horrible. I still haven't finished SHOC because of random save game errors :/ Gotta finish it before playing cs

I'm still buying it as the original is one of the best games in recent years, but the reviews don't make the game sound too hot and the most important aspect of the game seems to have taken a hit as well (atmosphere). Honestly, while some of the bugs in the original were annoying, they didn't really dampen my enjoyment of the game.

Well, yeah, but my question is what patch should I start with? 1.005 or a lesser one? I don't know anything about stuff like that. Does the 1.005-patch include the patches that came earlier?

I had a quick chance to try it at Leipzig and it looked and felt really good; in my opinion all those who liked the first one, will surely love this second chapter.

It's weird that you've had the price go up, but I just checked the Australian page and it's still on $35.99

STALKERCS.PNG

This is odd for two reasons. One, normally Australia is linked to EU pricing for whatever reason. Two, THQ fucking region blocked STALKER (and the rest of their games) from Australian Steam.

It makes me think that they're going to region block this, too. But I'm betting some Australians have already prepurchased the game. What happens if they do region block the game to the people who've purchased it?

I hate gamer inequality.

EDIT: Had to change image URL because Bungiefans.org just switched hosts and pretty much every image I've ever linked is now 404ing. Heh.

Prepurchased the steam version. Reviews aren't going to steer me away, especially at this price and with that big patch already.

THQ is no longer their publisher, and Steam apparently has exclusive worldwide digital distribution rights.

I'm amazed at the price though. At $45, they cannot compete with the retail release in Europe (which is still listed at €30).

I will buy this game today if I can find it, I don't mind the reviews, sure there are glitches and things than could be better, but in the first STALKER a lot of the reviews criticized things that I ended liked in the game.

Btw, I finished STALKER with three diferent endings, one bad and the two good, anyone can answer me this question? :
Are you Strelok or not? I mean, they said that they sent stalkers to kill Strelok, but with you they made and error and you ended with a suicide mission or something like that, cannot remember the exact words now.
