Star Citizen hits 400 million USD in funding!

I hope Chris Roberts is enjoying my 25 dollars from 2012. How much did you guys pledge?

If you're wondering the alpha hasnt really changed since they hit 300m USD. Its still a 50 player limit MMO, on 1 of the planned 100 systems, with multiple gameplay loops MIA. And don't ask about SQ42.

I didn't know I had a brother named Chris. Wish he would slide me some of that Dough.
On topic, I don't know anything about this. Is it a PC only game?

I keep wavering as to whether this is a scam. On the one hand, they do have a playable product which lots of people enjoy so it's not like they're literally doing nothing.

On the other hand, they are so woefully late and their progress towards the finish line has been stuck at a complete standstill for years. Part of what makes this feel scummy is that they continue to make so much money doing things like selling ships for a game that barely exists or even selling ships that only exist a concepts.

Cue thread full of bile and anger from people who believe that other people should not like what they like and should not be allowed to spend their money to support whatever they want. 😂

Also, completely and factually false information. Because can't have a thread about Star Citizen without false information. 😂

I apologize, I completely forgot bartender AI and volumetric clouds. Buy an Idris!

I pledged enough for squadron 42 for $45 way back in the yesteryear of 2013. I absolutely do not expect to be able to play Squadron 42 ever at this point.

Fortnite hit billions before it even released. Must be a scam too!

Also quite the ignorant summary in the op.

I love how cheesy gamers made it seem like the game was the next coming of Jesus.

Ah the the good old days. Cyberpunk destroying TLoU2 type of vibes.

But respect to the devs, love the hustle.

I still feel screwed over with my funding, but I've learned a lifelong lesson. I also met my wife in the SC chat roll so that was worth 1000 times over what I crowdfunded.

And various improvements to flight mechanics and space combat, player trading, two planets, criminal gameplay, prisons, and jailbreaks, ore refining, a whole new factional reputation system, tractor beams, a new mining system, planetary caves, ship docking, plenty of new missions, live dynamic events, the new power management system, the new inventory system, medical gameplay and hospitals, player looting, dynamic NPC loot, infiltration and defense missions, bombing...

Do I need to humiliate you a little more or we're done here? 🤔

I'm just waiting for the fucking jugglers and circus freaks that are about to enter this thread to explain why Star Citizen is worth it.

With a clown-post like that you should feel right at home.

And I just fucking cleared my ignore list last week and planned to not use it again, goddamned..

In a moment of weakness I bought the aurora package about 3 days ago. When it's working right it's actually pretty cool.

I am confused as to why anyone still thinks this will ever come out. It sounded cool at first, but really, how many years need to go by before it's considered a w/o? 2? 4? 6? 20???

The trick is to work on it forever and never finish it. That way Chris Roberts can just keep getting money until the end of his natural life. It's just the videogame version of The Wheel of Time, or A Song of Ice and Fire.

You are fantastic at making tiny features sound like a big deal, but then you have learned from the best, Cloud Imperium Games!

Improvements to flight mechanics? aka after 8 years of 'alpha' they still have an unsatisfactory flight and combat model and say theyre 'working on it.' I read the same back in 2014 when I complained after trying the dogfighting module.

New mining system? They iterated on the only career they've added to the game since 2018. Meanwhile Salvage just got 'delayed' for the seventh time in 5 years, and most of the other careers people bought ships for are MIA.

Prisons were introduced before 300m USD. I forgot medical, but the rest is just laughable. New inventory? More caves? Added a ship that can drop bombs with zero gameplay for it because we needed an excuse to sell another ship? Come on.

What you need to understand is that the progress they make is so trivial compared to the promises they made that it feels like pissing in the wind. After a *decade* they are still working on the foundations of the house, no one is impressed that they've figured out the front door color. And don't mention SQ42!

Wheel of time shouldnt be on here. He left notes just in case he died

You are fantastic at making tiny features sound like a big deal

On the other hand, you're pretty bad at trying so desperately and dishonestly to make important gameplay features look "tiny."

You do understand that bringing an example of a small feature, of which they have added hundreds, which I did not mention out of mercy and for the sake of brevity, does not make much bigger features small, do you?

Haters like you are simply angry that there are hundreds of thousands that keep supporting this game. More try it every year, and more understand its potential and decide to support it. All this anger and bile for the fact that other people like what they like isn't healthy you know?

no one is impressed

Apparently, A lot of people are impressed. And that seems to anger you quite a lot.

What you need to understand

I don't need to "understand" anything more than the fact that Star Citizen gives me a lot of ongoing enjoyment for an investment comparable to any other game with a few DLC on top. That's what matters, and that's what you need to understand (but you won't, of course).

Star Citizen has made great progress over the past few years. Those who stuck with it are already having a lot of fun, more than with many "released" games, as it offers unique gameplay that other games don't, which is why people keep supporting it. And guess what? All the lies and dishonest descriptions from haters never managed to stop this train, which keeps accelerating. I guess this must make you feel really mad. Honestly, I pity you.

When I don't like a game, I don't feel the need to spend my time on forums inventing dishonest excuses to bash it (even more so making threads about it to vent misplaced anger and frustration at its success). I just go play something I like. Apparently, you must not have many games you like available. Pity. 🤷‍♂️

A friend of mine works with AWS and says the player limit in this is due to the engine running on AWS and that's the maximum number of players it can support without tanking the performance.
Don't worry. They'll figure it out. They are going to up the concurrent player count from 50 to infinity, like EVE.

This game is never coming out. Keeping it in development and milking gullible people is now the business they're in.

I have access to the "game" as it is now in whatever moving target, pre-production state they're calling it now (I don't remember why but I certainly never gave them any money). Even as a tech demo for something from 2018 it's simply not good. It's just plain awful. I feel sorry for the people who fell for it and continue to fall for it. That sunk cost fallacy in action.

Look at all those whales. I feel sorry for their families, having all this money wasted on a product that will never release.

Some people have decent jobs and are able to spend the money they earn however they want on their hobbies, and take good care of their families at the same time. I'm fairly sure they don't need your feels (or your thinly-veiled envy). 🤷‍♂️

Are you one of the whales that wasted money on this, Abriael? If so, I feel for your family

You don't need to. For about $150 (which is more or less what you spend nowadays on a collector's edition of a game, which is usually mostly full of junk anyway), I've got more enjoyment out of this than 90% of the released games I played in the past 30 years, with some really fun insight and nice video content on the development process of an AAA game on top of it as a bonus, and I'm part of a pretty great community in which I made quite a few long-lasting friends. I also get to enjoy the tears of the haters every time the crowdfunding passes a milestone, which isn't a bad added bonus.

I'll call it a win.

Everyone pray for this man. He is suffering from sunk cost fallacy.

on one hand, the available product IS rather impressive looking and I don't mind giving it a try. but on the other hand, after all this time in development hell, the whole thing just seems like a huge mismanagement case at best, and a scam at worst.

Just go buy wing commander series on GoG or other stores. you will get a complete experience and not have to deal with this scam.
