Pilot Your Own Ship in Star Ocean 4
The latest SO actually feels kinda like a sci-fi RPG for a change.

great stuff, about time Star Ocean actually had space travel.

for those unaware, I don't know if it was intentional or not... The tgs trailer shows a *gasp* crash landing lulz.

they probably went like "It's not like a SO game without a crash landing. We need to fit in one somehow."

I guess, the 'non-linearity' could be similar to SO2... If so, that would be neat.

Fantastic! I'm actually doing a report that I needed that site for....it's complicated....I've been looking for an official site for weeks. I wasn't aware they just didn't make one yet.

Saw the clean scans, finally. The interior of the ship looks awesummmmmmmmmmmm, I'm very hyped for this. Hopefully it doesn't backfire like IU. I have faith in this team, they haven't let me down yet.

Some more bits of info regarding the spaceship:

-You (Edge) will be given a ship (probably) fairly early on. It is called the Calnus (which is clearly a shout out to long-time fans of the series, and probably has some relationship to the Calnus of SO1 and SO2)
-The Calnus will serve as a base of operations for you and your party
-You will be able to fully explore the Calnus, and interact with your various crewmates
-You will apparently be given much more freedom to customize the ship, including assigning crew to certain living quarters. It has been hinted that you will even be able to assign Edge a roommate. (Reimi ftw!)
-While on the Calnus, your party will split up, and you will be able to engage them in Private Actions (a series staple feature) which will allow you to develop your relationships with them.
-The Calnus is capable of flying to various planets, so you won't be limited to the linear story that was so prevalent in previous games
-Vakkas D-79, a new cyborg character has been revealed as the 5th playable character

Wow, this thing just keeps distancing itself as the best JRPG when it finally comes out. As great as the old Star Oceans were I never would have guessed Star Ocean would emerge as the pinnacle JRPG of its time :lol

Big Star Ocean 4 article on Famitsu this week.

- New character revealed
- goes into greater detail regarding the BEAT system
- Info on the Rush system
- Info on Link Combo/Cancel Bonus system
- Info on battle skills

Lots of battle screens. OMG looks so good.

Wrong engine.
Crystal Tools isn't what Tri-ace is using. They built their own engine.

Damn your stealth edit.

I don't think I edited anything :lol I'm simply saying engine support doesn't necessarily translate into actual support.

It will probably come a while after.

Ya, give it a year and it'll be on PS3, in time to compete with (and lose to) FFXIII, lol.

I really like the gameplay videos, it seems really fast paced for combat, which is something I want.

Oh cool, so the BEAT system is like some kind of customization system and gives different bonuses and/or abilities.

Seems like there's going to be a good variety of them, and the screen seems to imply that some can go up in rank (which I assume means it gives better bonuses and maybe gets more abilities), and that you can equip more than one?

Famitsu and their lol-resolution pics.
They're just supposed to be samples to entice viewers to buy the magazine for the full spread, not screenshots for media and comparison purposes.

And since famitsu scans are banned on GAF, having samples of the media content within the week is pretty much the next best thing.

I just noticed Mericle is a (lesser) Fellpool. Cool.

And I'm glad the races this time around look more like what I kinda expected of alien races or robots, or just that they're mixing up the look between races a little more. No one in SO3 was that different from a normal Earthling in appearance besides Roger, which kinda bothered me.

New article this week.

- 3 dvds + price
- new character revealed

don't know if there's more, because I haven't seen the article yet.

Never liked star ocean's hero and heroine, it's all about the other party members like maria and ashton.

but so far, i am not seeing awesome characters in SO4. :|

Maybe
the 4D people had gotten past being a bunch of furries? Excluding Roger's race, of course. :P There was the whole village/area of Peterny and the sunken town, which could be remnants of the old days! Very few human types there!

They should put Welch in Star Ocean 4 somehow. Since she got added to the PSP games, she should be a recurring series character that's more than a cameo. Don't let the best Star Ocean character go to waste, tri-Ace!

Maria's design was far from awesome, she's only awesome because of how ridiculously overpowered she is in battles.

I'm liking the designs so far, they look unique. I have the same problem that rpgmonkey has with the designs of the other games in the series, too many human-looking characters.

Given that you didn't purchase IU, doesn't that make you a hater?
It only makes me the better fan, because I was able to resist and get it later for cheaper
instead of $60!

You're starving Tri-Ace of vital graphics engine R&D funds. Without our launch-price purchases, their current-gen games may never make it out of single-digit frame-rate hell.

And they won't be able to afford the ADVANCE TECKNOLGEEZ that can render characters to make them look like anything other than real dolls

It's still an improvement over Final Fantasy VII.
