Star Ocean 4 JP site open. Release Feb 19=Japan, Feb 24=NA, April 24=PAL

even though i despise tri-ace, I will give this game a try I think. I wanted to like SO3 SO MUCH but they had to ruin it with a shit-story twist. If they can NOT do that in so4, i might actually like it.

but i will still hate you, Tri-Ace.

btw, i'm completely oblivious to this kinda stuff, but considering the MSRP in Japan...are high prices in JPN reflected with equally high prices in their western release counterparts?

No. In the West almost ever game is set at a standard of $60 upon initial release.

Sounds great so far, but I hope they don't put something else in like the Battle Gauge again, or gimp even more of the skills.

Yeah, really. Hopefully they're THINKING about this cool-sounding new shit they're putting in as to avoid the last-gorounds' random mechanics interactions, cuz it sounds good.

New character seems to be a dual light saber user (maybe?) looks like combination of Asch (ToTA) and Ashton (SO2).

Another interesting bit, is how you can apparently, switch characters mid battle. I don't mean characters that are in battle, I mean switching between characters that are in battles with those that aren't DURING battles. At least that's what I get from that pic shown in the article.

Not really sure, could be an NPC. he is not shown in any of the battle pics.

dude it's easy to find the scans in the internet.

Summary of the article:
- in-battle character switching (can switch a character that's currently fighting with one that's not participating in battle)
- new character shown, dual sword user (he carries 2 light sabers in the 2d art). whether he is playable or an NPC is not known.
- an in-depth look at BEAT system
- More info on Sight In/Sight Out
- Something about Rush and a special attack? In one of the screens it shows a character doing a special move. in others it shows a Success/Failure thing. Interesting!

Not if you don't have a single idea where to look.

New character seems to be Clow F. Almedio, red-haired dual lightsaber user. Can't really read anything else...

Dammit. I can't justify buying a 360 to play the next game in one of my favorite games series... I can't justify buying a 360 to play the next game in on of my favorite game series...

Dammit!

They're basically giving them out free in packs of cereal these days. Doesn't take a lot of justification. :lol

Man I hope that hi-ougi crap from Tales doesn't make it into this. I hate that shit. Moves that freeze the action=bullshit.

No way, ougis are what I love about JRPGs. From the 2D Tales games to VP. Give me more.

So assuming the new guy is a playable character, isn't that all 7 of them for the site? (Though there were apparently 8 slots in the TGS build...)

Going by design alone, Crow would make for a more interesting hero design than Edge's personally. :P

Nice that both Tales and Star Ocean are (slowly) moving into making ways for inactive party members to do stuff in battles. :D

Hopefully they move into something faster and with more potential for switching up combos and other technical stuff in their later games.

Special attacks do kinda look like short cutscene things like Hi Ougis though (in Edge's though it seems you have to press A, so I guess they're interactive). I liked that they differentiated each other by Tales making their best moves more cinematic and Star Ocean making their best moves quick and simple (but still pretty flashy), but oh well.

It's jarring in a real time game to have battle skills interrupting the action. I don't mind them in VP, VP is a more slow paced game anyway. you can skip them in VP, too.

If Tri-Ace includes MP death in this game, I will hunt down the person who came up with the idea and the person who gave it the OK to be implemented into the game and kill them and their pets.

Perhaps, but they worked really well in Tales of Destiny (remake) because battles weren't made up of spam-ougi-to-win. Combos were deep and varied enough that the real-time aspect was always the main emphasis.

On a side-note I still need to play SO3 :(

MP death wasn't bad at all. once you get Convert Damage skill in SO3, even mage-type characters could do some tanking in battles.

MP death sounds stupid at first, but the games gives you skills and stuff to turn it around and use it in your favor.

Well it certainly looks better than the last game. I'm really hoping for a disclaimer upon starting the game, "We were just kidding with Star Ocean 3, we thought you guys would find it funny."

Find it funny in what way? The gameplay in SO3 is amazing, with tons of customization. How's that a joke?

Shit, I'm hard pressed to name more than 3 rpgs last gen with the amount of customization and depth SO3 gameplay has.

And to all SO3 haters, the game is actually *gasp* building upon SO3 gameplay. You can start abandoning ship now.

I think they were talking about the plot twist.

You know, the one where Star Ocean 1, 2 and 3 were all a video game that a bunch of people in the 4D world play?

Well, it had tons of customization, that's for sure. But it was broken. All you had to do was make a + Laser Weapon and you could go to town on anything in the game. Additionally, the gameplay was far from amazing. It was fun enough, but that too was broken. Anytime you face a challenging foe, all that was required was for Nel to spam her kyoukusen or whatever it was called and then bang, you win in like 2 minutes :/ I found that any party consisting of Nel/Maria armed with + Laser Weaps able to stomp anything into the ground so easily, it wasn't even fun.

Also; lol @ story.

Well, the joke's on them. If anyone is actually interested in the story of Star Ocean 4 then :lol

Main game on normal difficulty isn't really that challenging. There are some difficulty spikes here and there, but nothing I would call hard. Until post-game that is. And yesh the Laser weapon+orichalcum thing does break the main game, but come post-game that doesn't really work at all.

Final Fantasy Tactics is easily breakable, too. But I can't deny the game has TONS of customization options, and that's fun even if it's breakable easily.

Well, it's mainly the people who liked previous SO games. Story is important in RPGs too. If it's executed poorly, there's not much motivation to go on in the game for some of us. Do you skip cutscenes or something?

SO3 was a really fun game though, that's what kept me going. I liked the battle system a lot. The plot twist was retarded, and the story was at least interesting enough to a certain point that I liked it too.

I only watched the cutscenes once in SO3, they were pretty atrocious. So I didn't bother watching them in my other playthroughs.

Yeah, going back to play it again, they really are bad after all the stuff has come out. It hasn't aged well.. and the voice acting is baaad. I guess it goes with the times though, hopefully I won't feel the same way about SO4..

The VA isn't that bad actually, I liked the main cast at least. The side characters are pretty bad, though.

Enron is stupid.

But I've never played an SO game, so this looks kind of nice I guess. I'm a bit sick of JRPGs, but I don't have much choice these days now that I've went through Mass Effect already :o

I still hear Pepitta and Sophia's english voices in my most dreadful of nightmares.

Great looking graphics... makes me want to replay through Eternal Sonata again. *sighs* Sony needs to get a piece of the jRPG action some time soon.
