I'll have to look up my account info tonight and post it.

So I was looking up stuff about science officer. Seems like there are three kinds: researcher, scientist, and doctor. if I'm interested mostly in pvp, I should be researcher right? If so, is there anything I should be doing out thinking about while leveling?

Also, do science officer only use science vessels? Or are other ships useful? Or even possible

I'm kind of surprised at how much I enjoy the PvP. Normally I don't care all that much for PvP in MMOs because it tends to end up being a focus-fire burn-fest, but with this I keep finding myself being able to shed tons of fire and stay alive. It really makes for an exciting time when you've got two or three ships dumping fire into you and you're using everything you have just to keep your hull above 50%.

In other news: Cruisers 4 lyf

So I was doing PvE stuff with randoms and holy crap. The final ship is such a beast and of course I was pulling threat because i'm a giant cruiser lol. I still ended up doing well for some reason despite dying a few times lol.

I tried this thing again, and NPCs on an away mission are falling through the floor, of course to be chased by my away team...

Done with it now for good and uninstalled.

Oh god yes...*gurgle* moar DS9/Dominion arcs

Hopefully one day get to see Gamma Quadrant too

I finally achieved the rank of captain and got a new ship:

Very nice, I know I went for that when I hit Captain, but abandoned it once I hit admiral

you can't put a price on sparks
i'm not sure if i'm playing correctly. i have a science officer, science vessel, but i've been pretty much speccing into the weaponry and survival stuff more than any of the healing sorta things.

does it really matter that much? i'm probably not going to seriously raid, or even if i do, does it matter?

You may have saved up a bunch of skill points but you can't spend them all in one place, the game makes you spend some between both at some point

Is there any reason to actually stay with an old ship once you unlock a new one? There are certain classes of ship that I really like and don't want to abandon.

Better specs, more slots, better consoles

However, I did sacrifice a slight loss in turn rate and inertia from going from Defiant class to Hermes class but I was never big on that anyways, I want more options for devices and weapons

Romulans are pesky buggers but taking them head on with high yield torpedos, rapid cannon fire and attack pattern alpha tears them to shreds

I know the particular benefits of new ships, but I mean, if one happens to really like the Defiant class ship, one would have to sacrifice that preference in favor of the benefits that a better ship would confer at the rank of Admiral. The game seems designed to force you to choose the better ships at the expense of the ships that you really want to pilot. For example, I can't think of any reason to go around with a Defiant class vessel on the later missions, even if you really wanted to. That constricts the players' choices, which I suppose isn't a huge deal, but it seems arbitrary that some vessels have so many advantages over others. They should've focused more on specializations, in my opinion. It may be obvious that a Constitution class vessel is relatively worse compared with other vessels, but the Defiant is supposed to be a top of the line military ship, yet it's "only" intended for the captain levels and quickly discarded at the rank of Admiral, as far as I'm aware.

Well I did realize this after the fact, there is nothing really stopping you from keeping even the ship you had from the start if you were so inclined, the gear it takes is limited by your rank not what the ship itself can supposedly handle

I even equipped a standard shuttle craft with Mark X polaron weapons, chroniton mines, Borg assimilated technology, it was really funky looking watching a shuttle craft flying faster than starships, I even had the transwarp capability with it still

The Defiant you get at Captain is not the same Defiant from DS9, that's why when you get to Vice Admiral you get the option to unlock the real Defiant (tactical escort retrofit) that you saw from the show, that had the fancy things like cloaking device and quad cannons (not dual cannons)

ugh the Mirror Universe PvE annoys me when there is NO one helping out. Me and another Cruiser were taking a beating while the two escorts that were there were being silly. Ugh.

On the other hand, Mirror Universe is delicious XP when everything does go right. During tonight's, I actually did two of them, for a total of nearly two levels. I guess it helped that in the first one, there were two rear admirals with Prometheuses. Second one was nearly as easy. Going from the Commander ranked escorts to the Captain ranked ones seems so much better, despite it just being one more forward weapon slot and a little more durability and maneuverability.

Going from the ugly Akira to the Defiant is a big leap even if it's just one more Fore weapon. That's one more source of damage to really push stuff with. =o

Anyway, Dual heavy cannons with Rapid fire is big damage against targets but man, do DHCs kinda suck for fighting multiple targets, especially around you. I like Fire at will in that regard, that and there's something awesome about laser beams.

Anyway, standard decking my Advanced Escort out in Antiproton weapons and anti-borg stuff. Got 3 DHCs and a Quantum Torp launcher from the STFs and I just picked up a single turret. Two more turrets and I'll be working for the Engine/Deflector/Array set.

but I am convinced they've made the A.I. either smarter or tougher in STF's

I used to conquer those Borg missions now I am getting blown up quite good with the same equipment and tactics I always had.

I keep hearing people asking about bringing proper death penalty or consequences to dying to STO, but so far I have seen nothing official.

Zzoram

If you play on Advanced or Elite difficulty, there are death penalties but the loot drops are better.

Penalties come in the form of injuries on you, your bridge officers, and damage to your ship. You need to go to a starbase sickbay or technician to remove the death penalties.

Gotcha

And so far I've seen phasers, disruptors, plasma weapons, antiproton weapons, tetryon...........

When choosing what to roll with, should I value one type of damage over another or just look for the highest DPS?

Or does it really depend what your enemies defences are?

They all have the same DPS and a different effect.

Phasers have a chance to temporarily knock out a random subsystem. Disruptors have a chance to debuff defense. Plasma has a chance to cause some burn I think, Tetryon might be chance for critical bonus damage or something.

Basically it's preference.

Bah, just doing the explore the Afeheer (?) Nebula mission at level 21, and there are Remans attacking this base. Got through the start okay but the Reman captain dude is literally impossible to kill. He does this weird teleporty, change in to 4 bodies, kill all my BOFFs in a few hits thing. Had to give up :|

Eventually you have to be really good at using skills to beat some of these bosses, or play with another human since they're stronger than BOFFs.

Yeah, most of the stuff I have so far are just some buffs, usually leave it to the AI to use their own skills. Might have to investigate.

I was actually thinking of the Sovereign class, which is what I really wanted all along, but it's nice to know that there is another Defiant type ship at the higher ranks. My current ship feels like a huge upgrade over the Akira class. It has the speed and maneuverability to do strafing runs against enemy ships, especially if they are comparably slower (for example, a Romulan Warbird).
They all have the same DPS and a different effect.

I always tend to go with the most powerful weapons, but for ground combat I think it's important to equip a wide variety of weapons on your team to take advantage of all the different effects. I only think strategically about it if I really need to.

The Tier 3.5 Akira Refit is still pretty effective at higher levels I'm told.

At some point I'll have to put together a short post on which for-pay ships have which benefits, and which of those can be transfered on to other ships at higher levels.

At some point you gotta take a real look to your away team skill setup to keep things flowing nicely. I did most of my leveling during the old ground combat, but can't imagine that these things have changed that much

Good team setup is 1 tac, 1-2 sci, 1-2 eng. If only 1 sci, then that is the dedicated healer with 4 different heal skills. Eng goes with shield rechargers and couple of turret type powers. Tac can get the targeting skill which exposes people in aoe, and maybe grenades. Slip in powers that can expose. Equip all the guys with aoe expose weapons that have cone or explosion effects. Equip 2 guns with exploit effects on yourself that you can switch on the fly, like sniper rifles, and exploit all the openings your expose officers give you for faster killing.

Not sure about smarter, but they shoot harder that's for sure. I'm gonna get the 40 badge mark XI shields for my engineer, and I've noticed that only way of doing STFs now is going for maximum damage. I got out of my cruiser and into the multi-vector escort.

There are even rarer weapons that are hybrids of the two energy types, they may have lower DPS but it makes it harder for the enemies to adapt and thus can cut people down fairly quickly.

I personally just got done getting a Plasma-Disruptor Dual Heavy Cannon from an episode mission called "Past Imperfect" which I completed ages ago.

And yeah, elite level anything, penalties come in the form of actual ship and crew damage that require either time to fix or going to starbases to fix and/or seeing Sickbay

I'm kinda sure you'll have to deal with the game's launcher anyway, so what's the point in waiting for a Steam release? I don't get it :)

Unfortunately I never bought it - I can't afford subscription based MMOs, so although I was interested, I didn't bite.

I had heard that the download from the STO site has some crapware bundled in with it that's hard to get rid of or something? Quite apart from which I'd rather just have things on Steam because that's where the vast majority of everything else I have is. Also makes it real easy to take screenshots.

Not really. It's called Pando Media Booster and it's easy to remove.

I forgot about that Pando Media Booster shit... I may have either installed the client before they did that shit or removed it a long time ago

You guys got me paranoid about this Pando Media Booster now. I did a sweep for it on my machine, but didn't find anything. I installed the game a few days after it went F2P. Anyone know where it would of installed or have they dropped it from the install?

Been playing this the last couple of days and am pretty surprised how much I like it.

It's weird how the Star Trek trappings make stuff that might seem like more of a grind make sense to actually do. I mean, wandering around in a system scanning anomalies for a long time is something that actually makes sense in this universe.

Depends. They had two download clients. One had Pando Media booster and the other didn't. Did you use a full blown installer or a smaller one? The small one was just a download progress bar. The "big" one had some dude holding a phaser and was all blue. That one installed Pando Booster before starting the download.

Yeah pity no new ship...there used to be that reward back when it was still a pay subscription, freebies can't get it all I guess.

I just finished a buncha episodes, I am finally at the ep called "The New Link", and am waiting to see if we can team up and take on the ep together. If not, no worries.

Paranoid? Why do you have to be paranoid? Just look for it in your uninstall list. If it's there, uninstall it and it'll be gone.

I saw you in a STF today! Hi. Yeah, that's all =P

Still a few levels from VA myself, but I just finished Borgifying my Sovereign, woo. That anniversary thing is coming up this weekend, right? I'll get myself an Odyssey-class for max level to tide me over until I have enough Cryptic Points from dilithium to get a MVA Escort, which is what I've really been looking forward to since starting this game. I always thought the Prometheus was the coolest thing from just the one episode it was in, heh.
