Ok so it's not quiet as confusing as I first thought, just finished the SS Azura mission after the tutorial though and got a "Duderon Particle Trace" (Rare).

What is it and what do I do with it?

Is there a wowhead style site with info on loot/items in STO where I can get an idea of what stuff is worth keeping / selling or trashing?

Rare Particles are for crafting Rare items, Save them up for later.

BTW i have the aegis set right now, how does the borg stuff compare?

Ahhh cheers, I've just got a Memory Alpha mission in my log so I guess that's a crafting tutorial coming up.

I hate being a noob, it's like the first day of school all over again.

Still, shooting shit with phasers and torpedoes is fun!

Ground combat stays about as fun throughout as far as I've gotten (level 33), but space combat continues to increase in fun as you unlock more abilities. I can do everything now from fire Tachyon Beams to launch Boarding Party shuttles to venting my Drive Plasma

So, question. I went from 20 to 27 without picking up a Heavy Cruiser. Should I wait till I'm 30 for the next tier?

Good to hear, as an Engineer for ground combat I see I can lay a bunch of mines that so far noone is stupid enough to run over, preferring to shoot me at range, like any sensible sentient being would. :p

So far I'm beating Capt Kirk on the keeping-your-red-shirts-alive-on-an-away-mission too, having lost a total of zero, Kirk was an amateur :D

The idea of venting my drive plasma is giving me a trekkie nerdgasm! :D

You don't have to get a new ship if you don't want to... but yer missing out on some shiny new badassedness, and if yer flying through levels, you might as well wait a bit more

Made it finally to Lieutenant General (level 50)... the name of the rank doesn't sound right to me, somehow it sounds less than a Major General... but oh well... it's Bortas time! :D

Finished decking it out and customizing it.

Here she is, the I.K.S. Dominion, an advanced heavy escort battle cruiser meant to repel the biggest threats to the Empire and the Alpha Quadrant

Currently decked out with a Reman shield, and a Borg subtranswarp engine, and all disruptor weapon system of dual heavy cannons (x4) and 3 disruptor aft beam arrays and a disruptor turret. 4 tetraburnium hull plates of armor, a rare shield emitter, 4 mk xi disruptor induction coils, a cloaking device, and a positronic deflector array mk xii. It's a beaut and a behemoth... it turns slower than a tugboat in quicksand. I think it turns even slower than the Odyssey ship almost.

Arghghgh!

So after nearly an hour of running around in circles, trying to find some bloody stupid samples on an exploration mission, to the point of getting increasingly frustrated and ready to punch my monitor to pieces and nearly ready to uninstall STO in anger, I discover my damned Tricorder...

I feel so foolish.

Doesn't that only point towards the things where you get data samples? It can still be a pain in the ass when they drop you to a planet and say "OK... go find 5 boxes on this map!"

I just get a message like "There are 0 anomalies in the area."

If you are somewhat close to mission objectives, it will point those out too (while still saying 0 anomalies, because those just refer to the crafting material anomalies).

Also, I finally got my first Gold Cardassian Lockbox. While deciding whether or not to buy a key to open it, I got about 10 messages telling me people got the Galor ship, so I decided, what the heck might as well give it a try.

Of course, I got some ship batteries =(

However, I opened another regular lockbox and got one of those Sekhat cub pets. Do these do anything?

I just don't feel right flying a crippled ship in an elite stf lol

I honestly don't know what it really impairs on my ship when I get all those ship injuries... I've had like all sorts of multiple ship critical fractures and shit and my ship still lived long enough to blast a hole through the last obstacle or boss, and I never felt my ship was any less worse

So has anyone else used carriers much as a Klingon? I got mine a couple days ago when I turned Brigadier General. For the moment I have it loaded up with all DHCs up front and all turrets in the rear. When feasible, I try to park at exactly 10km from my target and let loose with a barrage of Cannon Rapid Fire, along with whatever else my fighters are actually doing (which doesn't seem like a whole lot). Naturally, if I end up in the middle of a bunch of enemies, the strategy doesn't work quite as well.

I did find myself entering a Borg invasion at the tail end after the initial ships had been defeated and the Unimatrix ship had just arrived, so I tried just blasting it from range. My ship seemed to take it pretty well, or at least the Borg didn't consider me enough of a threat to fire more than the occasional OHKO bolt at me, which the cannons took down quickly enough. The command ship itself went down reasonably quickly, although I'm not sure if my output was contributing significantly.

Where can I get Bird of Prey hangars instead? Are they more effective than snub fighters?

Sometimes it points to objectives too. I points to either anomalies or objectives, whichever is closer.

Can't say much about carriers, just started getting into my own Klingon, but about the cannons... they do a lot more damage the closer you are to your target, so if you're going to park at long range, might try something like dual beams? I think the same applies for turrets too, actually, so maybe just go all beams and broadside like a cruiser? =P

Same goes for beams, the closer you are to a target the more damage they will do

I figured this out doing a mission earlier today that I didn't realize was meant for 5 player team instead of solo, I had to fight a ship that had over a million hp hull and it regenerated very quickly so I was nearly at it for 45 mins trying to get this ship down to a level that would make it in danger, and I did this by broadsiding, riding up as damn close that I was on top of them to do real long lasting damage

Yeah, but damage drop off for beams at range isn't as great as it is for cannons, so they're probably still a better choice if he's going to be maintaining distance in a big slow carrier. I leveled with cruisers to 50 and never really noticed it, but now in my MVAE, the difference between being far away and sitting on something is crazy.

Speaking of beams, I took my assault cruiser out for a spin again today. It's so nice and graceful, and there's something just plain awesome about beam weapons (especially if you've played Freespace 2!). The difference in damage output with my MVAE is quite staggering though. I have full sets of XII weapons on both, so the cruiser can still hold its own in elite STFs fine, but the escort is just such a ferocious little beast. And with those shitty one shot Borg torps, the extra survivability doesn't make much of a difference =/

Wow finishing elite STFs in the time limit seems impossible so far

But I also figure at least one person in every pug is massively undergeared and shouldn't be in an elite

I've flown both Kar'fi and Vo'quv for a really long time. These days I'm using Kar'fi in STFs, and it's a beast. I'd recommend skipping the bird of preys actually, they're pretty slow and massed torps from fighters do great damage. Use focus attack command so it's 'whited out' in your keybar and use flight deck officers to minimize launch intervals so you're pumping out fighters all the time. Against ships like tactical cube and unimatrix ship you want to use Drain Drones. You can buy the stuff from shipyard vendor.

Both my Fed and Klingon characters are pimped out as good as I want em... hopefully we have more great content to keep me interested long enough to earn enough credits formy Defiant retrofit.

Here's one more piccie of my lovely Bortas class ship, now outfitted with a Borg universal console and deflector dish but still keeping the Reman shields for now.

I'm really enjoying this, got up to level 9 in a day, and should make it to Lt. Commander with my Engineer shortly after the servers come back up, I assume this means new ship time.

Just changed my difficulty from Normal to Advanced as I was finding it too easy, first mission I did on advanced I accidendently pulled 2 groups of ships at once and had a raucous battle of me versus about 7 ships, but they never got my hull under 55% and I slowly picked them off, have just started sending Duty Officers off on assignments and crafted my first rare weapon (Phaser Bank Mk II or something).

Content at early levels seems to come thick and fast, hope this contines.

Now I need to find a fleet!

Cool, will do that after maintenance, cheers :)

Was funny as hell doing one of those Space War Zones in Ker'rat, there's me feeling all super and taking down probes like it was swatting flies, got the singular attention of a Tactical Cube and got humbled from 99% shields to vaporised in about 4 seconds flat... Ooops :D

Just got done playing the new ep. Second Wave, and holy crap, this one ep has more voice acting in it then the rest of the game I've played up to this point combined.

On top of that, it wasn't a bad ep. I didn't even know I was playing the new episode, I just took a random available mission, so imagine my surprise when the wormhole opened up.

The Romulan arc also had a significant amount of voice acting.

The VA in this game is... not good. It all sounds like very badly dubbed anime. The woman in ops and the Cardassian were about the only voices I liked from this episode. The Gorn was also okay.

On a separate note, anyone know if I will get another 400 C-Points if I buy the standard edition of the retail game and use the 30 day free sub? I was looking to buy some points, but since the game itself is only $6, I figured $6 for 400 C-Points + the TNG Enterprise code + the retail game is worth it.

I'm currently on my 30 day free sub from buying the CE by the way. I got 400 C-Points for free for using that 30 day code.

Here's a video podcast, STOked, commenting about the latest new Story Arc for "Second Wave", and upcoming things to look forward to, especially in regards to the Odyssey class ship and Galaxy Dreadnought and Bortas ship. For those of us who want a more Escort-y potential from the ship, looks like we may get our wish and moar

Saucer separation, ability to launch support craft from aft of the ship, the support ship into an Escort type vessel that can equip cannons, better turn rate, possible quad cannons? The sauce separation will NOT be like MVAM, behaves more like a Galaxy class saucer separation mode. Bortas launching a Tier 5 bird of prey from the back of the ship? Galaxy dreadnought saucer separation

I'm glad I went with the 40 Escorts, much easier to play overall compared to the Cruisers. I got my odyssey for when I feel like Beam arraying everything though.

I really want a science vessel at Admiral tier, but I don't like the designs of any of them so I might just pony up the cash for the Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit. My Odyssey class will be my admiral tier Cruiser, and I'll use the free ship to grab a Fleet Escort, so I'll have one of each type to play around with.

EDIT: Wait, the Odyssey has two science officer slots? That might change things...

You don't like Leonard Nimoy?!?!
Nimoy's fine, but for two things.

1. You only hear his voice exactly once for ever new sector block you see, as he gives a three sentence intro. That and an opening narration when you first start a character.

2. He doesn't sound like Spock. It just sounds like Leonard Nimoy reading some lines off of a sheet of paper. I don't know if that makes any sense. Maybe it's just that he's too old now and his voice isn't as strong or steady as it used to be.

That aside, the vast majority of the other voice acting is downright terrible. Their budget for that stuff is extremely limited, and it shows. We're not into Chaos Wars territory or anything, but it's not good. It feels like they got a couple members of the dev team or some folks from the community theater down the street to come record lines.

I'm sure with the financial trouble Cryptic was in for a while, and their acquisition by Perfect World, they didn't have much of anything to work with, and so it's not really their fault, but it still isn't fun to listen to.
Is it just me, or did the voice acting completely disappear for like two or three "seasons" worth of episodes?
That ought to tell you the limitations they were working under." And they don't even attempt to sync the lips up; the characters just move their mouths like AMAMAMAMAMAMAMAMA with no sense of rhythm or cadence.

It's nice that they're trying, and to some extent now they probably think they HAVE to, with the competition from the Old Republic, but that doesn't make it good.

I've written way more about this than it deserves, because it's not really a huge deal.

Stick with it. There is actually some really cool stuff in that story line, IMO.

Are you guys actually buying those keys? Is there some other way to get them? Very spendy.

You can buy them on the exchange, though last I checked they were about a million energy credits a pop. Slowly dropping, though.
