Ok episode. Leaned a little heavy on the "Zeb's an idiot, lulz".

That animation from next episode looked really nice.

It really felt like they were tying to out-sass K2 in this episode at every opportunity, kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

Still enjoyed it nonetheless, looking forward to that goodness!

Not sure how many times Thrawn can keep playing the "The Rebels May Have Kicked Our Asses But I've Learned More About Them In The Process!" card whilst still hoping to come across as a genuine threat.

The search being down to 90something planets now, the payoff must be pretty close.

Now you know why I never liked Thrawn. He was always a goddamned mary sue somehow perfect character. The EU made him into some kind of fucking messiah that was infallible.

It does make sense though. If you have resources to spare it's best to let the Rebel's consolidate somewhere and then squash them all at once rather than trying to slowly whittle them down.

I'm going to guess that's what we will get until the season finale. Which is fine with me because the season finales of this show have so far all been fantastic.

So I wanna say this, the Infiltrator Droid was great. Great design, genuinely threatening, and the way it cannibalized smaller droids to repair itself gave this episode a nice horror vibe.

Damn.

The problem is this episode was really weirdly paced. Honestly, the droid didn't last that long in the actual fight, and most of the episode was just Zeb, Chopper, and Imperial C-3PO talking about how to deal with it. Not even in a particularly worried tone most of the time. Just talking about how to fix it so the base stays hidden. The ultimate solution was decent, but kinda long winded. The episode peaked early, and didn't really do much for me afterwards. The revelation that Thrawn is slowly inching closer to home didn't come off particularly threatening to me, because almost every episode with Thrawn ends like this. With him saying he's learned more or that they'll win the war. Yep, can't wait for you to do something in the finale.

Agreed. Honestly, this was like the definition of a filler episode. It's pretty unimportant plotwise and super thin when it comes to character development. If you wanted to reach you could say the episode was about Zeb proving to himself that he's still a capable leader without Hera or the rest of the crew, but that is reaching and honestly that is a poor tale. A better writer would have had Zeb actually reach out and contact Hera and the rest of the crew after coming to realize he was in over his head. In the end, they'd all work together to solve the problem. Thus, you could have a lesson about no matter how big or tough you are, you shouldn't be embarrassed to ask for help.

Instead, Zeb basically risks everyone's life to prove that he doesn't really need any help and it all works out in the end. It's a really pointless episode held up by some good humor between the cast. Did Whitta write this one?

It's exactly as everyone feared when the season started. Thrawn is just going to fuck around and say dramatic shit for the entire season until the finale rolls around and the production team finally wakes up and realizes it's time for their A game.

This season has seen improvement but it's still got a lot of the same weaknesses as the last two.

This is my problem with almost the entire series. The characters have very little emotional range outside of ambition and snark.

The characters never seem worried or afraid, because they're too busy playing "who can land the best one liner". Hell, they don't even seem happy, because we never actually see them laugh. They just smirk after they land their one-liners and go about their business.

I think that's why I loved when Ahsoka showed up. She brought a personality that actually showed emotions with her. We saw her lose her shit when she connected with Anakin.

I would push back on that a bit and point to the way they handled Kanan coming to terms with his blindness. I thought the writers and FPJ did a really good job portraying his depression, despair and fear in his first meeting with Bendu.

Shame they have done very little with it since.

Kanan is easily the best-written new character in Rebels.

Ezra was starting to go interesting places, but then he regressed pretty hard.

It was really surprising how quickly Kanan turned into a legitimate character.
Hera has a great personality and such but that is literally all there is to her.
Ezra had a burst of interest but that evaporated quickly.
Sabine who should easily be the most interesting/exciting has been the slowest burn of all.

Kanan is pretty great. They did the smart thing and didn't just turn him into a mentor figure for Ezra.

I feel like they don't know what to do with Ezra right now tho. The season kicked off with a weirdly dark moment for him when he mind tricked a trooper into killing his comrades and then killing himself, and then when we have other episodes where he's the heart of the team.

It has kinda bugged me that Ezra has seemingly just ditched the temptation/influence of the dark side. The end of Season 2 made it seem like it would be a major point going forward, but it's barely been touched past the first couple of episodes.

Zeb's been horrendously underutilized after The Honorable Ones.

Probably the biggest wased opportunity on the show.

Trailer bait, unfortunately. Used a legitimately interesting story just long enough to draw people in and then everyone went back on vacation until the finale.

I've distinctly noticed this but honestly I think the show has benefited from focusing on smaller groups while pushing more characters to the sidelines.

What's hilarious is I was about to put Kanan down as an exception to the rule.

Because this is not a fucking anime adaptation of an ongoing story, it's an episodic cartoon show based around a set of characters having a variety of different adventures from week to week.

1. You seem to think that an episodic show cannot have "filler," you are incorrect.

2. You also seem to think that Rebels doesn't have an on-going story. What show have you been watching for the past two seasons?

Yeah that was fantastic, and a lot more focused and serious than the show usually is. Also it's like Sabine's a real character now!

Was really pleased with the episode. Not a dull moment. Probably my favorite episode to feature Sabine. If you are a sucker for Jedi training or lightsaber lore it is definitely gonna be a standout episode for you.

Oh, MAN.

I feel genuine pity for any Star Wars fan who's written off the animated content and missed out episodes like these.

This show has been able flesh out the universe FAR more than the movies ever could.

One of the best episode of the series so far.

The writing in the episode was just about as good as it gets. Filoni didn't pull any punches.

Dave said he took the unusual step of recording dialogue before animation, to capture the performances better.
