Damn fine episode, though I feel like it could've used one more act. Still, much better than the last pointless, filler episode. No surprise it was written by Filoni, he actually gives a damn about the characters.

The next act is them going to mandalore. Its airs feb 18 I believe.

I just had a chance to watch this episode. I must say it was probably the most well written episode of Rebels I've seen. I wish they would put as much effort into character development for other characters on the show.

Wow. Got me emotional. I teared up a little. It had so many different layers in that final scene that can be interpreted as politics, religion, sexual orientation.

Pre Vizsla approves.

I wanna believe the "positions" Kanan was putting Ezra & Sabine through were the same ones Ben Kenobi was talking about in the Star Wars Radio Drama.

I mean, I doubt it, but I wanna believe.

Considering the amount of Radio Drama stuff they got into R1 and some recent books, I suspect those ARE the same ones.

Im lost...can you expand?

In the radio drama, when Ben & Luke are on the Falcon as it's going through hyperspace, there's an extended bit, before Han comes in and starts bragging, where Ben is teaching Luke how to use the lightsaber, and they move through a progression of positions.

It sounds like this

In this episode, Kanan & Ezra move teach Sabine lightsaber techniques in a very similar way.

Im amazed a single episode bumped Sabine from last place to 2nd as far as most interesting character.
She was always the coolest but it was the Boba/Phasma effect.
I'd only maybe have Kanan above do to his huge progression.

Is this the same dude that directed Iron Man and Jungle Book?

Yes, and was also Tony's assistant in all 3 IM movies.

Honestly, great writing saved the day here. It seemed Ezra was poised to be the breakout character this season but Kanan and Sabine have eclipsed him. I wish he was still flirting with the dark side. I want to see that corruption but alas.

Sidenote. Im Shipping Sabine and Ezra.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kanan going out with a rematch with Vader, something like Asoka where he sacrifices himself so the others can escape if they had to kill him off.

I'd prefer he just stayed alive though.

Fantastic episode. I was hooked the whole way through, it makes the 4 week break all the more harder :(

On the brightside it lookslike the next episode's diving straight into the action and we're not having a filler one where nothing occurs judging from the title and preview on Rebels Recon.

Well yeah, I meant the acts within that episode. Basically, I thought they should have extended the time she went out by herself to think. It was a bit too short, imo. Still, great episode.
Agreed, it felt like there was a scene missing in which Bendu helps Sabine understand Kanan's teaching methods. Still, considering it was the best episode since the season 2 finale I'm more than happy with what we got.

Does anyone have a gif of Chopper purring? That was adorable.

I'm very interested in Bendu and the convorees noticing Sabine, combined with Kanan's talk about the Force being in all living things and her bonding with the blade. So far the convorees are only really around for important things.

Sabine...is Snoke?!

What I really liked about this episode is that they took the time to talk about how it felt to wield a lightsaber. That's a cool tidbit you never really hear anyone talk about: how you kind of struggle against it and that it's actually attracted to the other blade, etc. It just added a nice layer to everything and helped explain why someone who wasn't a force user could learn to actually wield one without chopping their own leg off, etc.

Knew from the first 5 minutes this was going to be a different ep - just how it was moving and the shots. More slow, more intimate, character focused with great dialogue and beautiful music. Great episode.

Special kudos to really adding a lot to the world building and mythology of jedi and lightsabers and how they connect with it all while not getting lost in exposition. Great writing all around. Also not only was the Sabine's story great, but it's also a really good Kanan episode too.

Great episode! Sabine was finally allowed to shine and her spot in the crew is finally cemented. Just wish the recently released Black Series figure came with the saber now.

If you watch he says it's unusual for him. They usually record dialogue after animation.

Uhhhh... as a storyboard artist, that sounds like a fucking nightmare. I mean I'm used to occasionally being told "oh we don't have audio for this character's dialogue because the voice actor hasn't yet done their recording," or sometimes we insert or alter dialogue as we go. But not having it at all would just suck. It also would make for some exceptionally awkward character animation.

That is an incredibly bad idea and sounds like a nightmare, I wonder if he was just referring to layouts or misspoke. Any site detail the typical creation of an episode?

This was the best episode since the season 2 finale.

The characters in this show can be great when their interactions are organic, and they don't feel like they were written to be as snarky as possible. I really liked the conversation between Kanan and Hera, and how Hera managed to convince Kanan to stop holding back out of the guise of protecting Sabine. (Ezra's comment about never being sure if Kanan was serious was also rather humorous.) It flowed very nicely, and felt like a talk a husband and wife could have about their kid. The episode looked nice too, with some nice lighting during the final fight. If I had one complaint, Erza's line about Sabine having a family to go back to was maybe a bit much. (I'm also not really sure why Bendu showed up at one point. Are we to assume him and Sabine had a talk off-screen?) Star Wars Rebels, by the fact that it's mostly set in a time we haven't seen before with new characters, should and perhaps has to be more character driven. It's struggled in that regard in my opinion, but hopefully more of the series can be like this episode.

My understanding is that recording after animation is standard in television.

Doing it the other way around is standard for features.

(dunno if that's changed significantly since CG animation became the standard, as you can't just cover up the fact the words don't quite match the mouth by doing lip flap. Seems like it should have)

But it also doesn't make sense that they'd be doing it after animation because we all keep hearing from the actors that they've got their performances locked and in the can long before the episodes actually enter production.

Weird either way.

All hail Sabine future Queen of Mandalore!

What a great episode, definitely one of the best.

Also, I have a lurking suspicion that they are going to reveal Sabine to be force sensitive and she's going to be some sort of Mandalorian-Jedi hybrid.

A hybrid? Jedi is a religious order isn't it? So you can be born force sensitive but how that is used depends on the person.

The episode was great. It'd be great if Sabine was found to be force sensitive but you'd think Kanan would have noticed her force sensitivity right away as he's been with her longer then he had with Ezra.

I think she'll get more proficient with the darksaber and get a elevated level awareness of the force but I doubt she'll be a Jedi anytime soon.

I just mean like she gets some training from Kanan, uses that lightsaber, but also still wears the armor and still uses the wrist rockets and shit. I'm not here to get deep on SW canon.

Man, Star Wars gets away with hand waving away so much shit already. They can come up with some reason reason why Kanan couldn't detect it if they really want to go that direction.
