For me it is. I don't just gradually hate a movie after I enjoyed the first viewing. I may get burnt out depending on how many times I've watched it though.

That's funny, because for me it's sometimes the opposite. It took me years to really enjoy Citizen Ruth and to realize how brilliant it was as a social satire. But upon first viewing, I was frustrated with it. It probably ranks in my top 10 favorite films of all time.

Fantastic!!!

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is a strong, promising kickoff. As a standalone, I'd rank it #3 in the series.

Adam F. Goldberg @adamfgoldberg
Ranking: 1. Empire Strikes Back. 2. Force Awakens. 3. A New Hope. 4. Return of the Jedi. 5 - 8 Prequels. Thank you JJ. #TheForceAwakens

Considering ESB includes some of the biggest moments in cinematic history, this ranking makes me moist with excitement.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is ok. I know it's poetry, I know it rhymes, but does every line have to rhyme with the last poem?

it's gonna be great

but > ANH or ESB is the hype talking. it doesn't need to be better than those films to be great. just being in the same league as the original trilogy (Jedi included) would be a massive triumph.

Why? We've just had two sequels to long running franchises this year (Mad Max Fury Road and Creed) that are easily among the best in their series.

THE FORCE AWAKENS proves JJ Abrams is an auteur: once again we have great characters, propulsive fun, sort of shitty, dumb story.

more or less what I'm expecting tbh

just in a good way. as opposed to the PT "rhyming" with the OT in a fucking terrible way

Guys, I need help.

I'm going to a midnight premiere with some friends tomorrow night and they want everyone to dress up as characters from the movies. I really don't like dressing up but I don't want to be that nofunallowed.jpg guy so I'm trying to find a costume I could get together for free (or super cheap). I'm drawing a blank though.

Anyone got any idea?
Did you check with the theater? Cause a lot of places don't allow that stuff anymore after these shootings have happened.

I can see this being the case lol Reminds me of the 60 Minutes interview where JJ was told by Kasdan to just "trust the characters". I guess he trusted them a good amount, but the story wasn't there to back them up according to Devin.

Out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This about sums it up:

It seems he's trying to say
1) the plot beats of this movie closely resemble plot beats in last Star Wars movies
And
2) JJ is good at entertaining an audience, but his films are shallow.

For the record I'm fine with #1. It seems to me that he is someone that wanted this movie to take major story risks.
As far as #2, well, I have thoroughly enjoyed every JJ movie I've seen so this doesn't worry me

Here comes the part where every time someone criticizes the movie, we look for every review that person has done so we can find the ones we disagree with and claim they clearly have no taste.

Sounds like he's saying it hits too many of the same old beats. Take that as you will.

I don't put much stock in Twitter reactions but the last thing I want this movie to be is a remake of ANH. That is pointless, that is worse than any of the prequels. I don't think this movie will be that, but if your film only exists to retread familiar territory, you may as well not make it.

Same. I even liked Into Darkness which most Gaffers seem to absolutely loathe.
