Games do not run much faster from SSDs, they do alot of random writes, and ssds are only marginally faster than hdds in that regard. (Something like that anyway, its faster loading screens, but not by much)

MMOs tend to see the most benefit out of them from games, though, by far.

SSDs are incredibly faster in terms of random writes. Even without any queuing, you're looking at 20MB/s versus <0.5MB/s on an HDD.

The random reads required by most MMOs and open world games are where SSDs shine. When I load up World of Warcraft in Stormwind on my HDD, it takes 5-10 seconds for other player models to load in. On an SSD, it's <1 second.

In LOTRO, I greatly reduced stuttering when loading areas by moving it to the SSD.

What is this dependent on? I entered my code Nov 15.

Nobody knows the specifics, only the general statement. They said they're going to do a press release later this week that details all that information... Which they should because early access is almost only one week away now.

Oh also, who's doing the OT anyways? Or is this just gonna be modified into the OT?
Additionally, when it gets made, is it 1 week from early access or 1 week from the release date?

Well, I'm in for a pre-order. Probably won't get much early access time this late in the game, but who knows.

I still haven't quite settled on a class. Think that will probably be a seat-of-my-pants decision when the time comes.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. All games are more dominated by continuous throughput than the inefficiencies of random access because the files accessed by games are large enough to eclipse the impact of that inefficiency. It's true that SSD's absolutely thrash mechanical hard drives in the area of random access due to their almost non-existent seek times but when you're loading larger files it's just not important any more.

I run a gen 2 intel SSD 160gb x25m and a pair of Samsung Spinpoint F4's in Raid 0 and there isn't a difference in games between the two, I've run the SWTOR beta off of both as well as BF3, Crysis, Crysis 2, WoW, Rift, Hell, I even dredged out my regrettable copy of AoC to try it on both, no difference.

Isn't this thread basically the OT already? I know I treat it as such.

They'll make the client available to accounts that have entered a pre-order code with a grace period to enter your CD key, I have absolutely no doubts there.

I hope so,that's what Rift did and it went well...of course if they tell me I can start like 2 days early, even though I have no bandwith cap,I will install from the DVD on the 20th.

Any thoughts on the dungeons throughout the game? I never got to try many but I liked the first spaceship one I tried. I'm hoping there's some meaty late game ones, I really wish devs would put out some convoluted ones again in MMOs but it never occurs. =/ WoW 4.3 dungeons and raids are all like... three fucking rooms hooked together by a teleporter, can't even be assed to make corridors anymore, it's the saddest shit I've ever seen. Genre gets dumber and dumber.

Star Wars: The Old Republic beta test attracts 2 million players

It's no secret that Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of the most highly anticipated MMORPGs in recent memory, and the game's recently concluded public testing phase confirms the hype. The game's publisher, EA, announced that the SWTOR test phase drew in over 2 million players, and of those 2 million, 750,000 unique players jumped into the game over the Thanksgiving weekend alone.

EA also shared some interesting statistics about the game's test players. Over the holiday weekend, players averaged about 12 hours of game time each for a grand total of over 9 million hours of playtime across the playerbase. If you didn't get a chance to try the beta, or if you simply couldn't get enough, you don't have much longer to wait. The game launches in about two weeks on December 20th, with pre-order head start beginning on the 15th.

That's what i've basically felt like too.

I'm probably going to make the OT more of a FAQ with some info about each class and links to the guilds. I think keeping all the frequently asked questions on the OP will probably be the most useful function.

I hope you put something in there for all the "I hear Sage is the only healer AMIRITE?" and "LOL Shadows aren't tanks, they wear light armor!" crowd...

Yes, that's one of the main reasons I want to do it FAQ style.

Also the fact that it's finals time and this lets me offload a lot of the work until after launch. Shhhh!

Can someone go into detail about the "Legacy" name in this game, as in when you get it, how it's applied and the sort? I'd go through the forums, but they're already a cesspool on a WoW level. I used to not mind sifting through that rubbish once, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

You unlock your legacy at the end of Act 1. Right now all it does is give you a Surname that if you choose is the only one that can be chosen for all your characters on the server and I believe possibly your entire account. You build up Legacy points by using other characters also with the Legacy Surname or such that will increase your legacy lvl or something of the sort, but really thats all it does it seems at least in the last beta. They are supposed to be adding in more stuff that is unlocked using the Legacy thing later on.

Kinda seems like a bonus for playing through the game with Alts, but right now it doesn't really do anything.

I still have no idea what I am making day 1 :(

DOHHH

Same boat man, All I know is that I'm rolling Imperial probably an Agent or Inquisitor but as far as what AC I have no idea T.T

I kinda wanna try out the Agent because what I saw of his story its awesome and I think he will be the lease played class on imperial side, you know whole no lightsaber and not a Bobba Fett wannabe thing

But the inquisitor sounds pretty slick too, if I'm willing to be 1 of 2 million lightsaber toons...

Sith Warrior
No one inspires more feat than a Sith Warrior. Born for battle, few opponents can withstand the rage-fueled blows from a warrior's lightsaber or penetrate a warrior's armor. If dual wielded lightsabers can't finish the job, there is always Force Choke to bring an opponent to his knees.
Advanced Classes: Sith Juggernaut (Tank, DPS) (Lightsaber, Heavy Armor) and Sith Maruader (DPS) (Dual wields Lightsabers, Medium Armor)

Frequently Asked Questions
What's this doing here?
I'm posting this first draft of the |OT| here so I can get feedback from you guys, plus I need FAQs, so ask away!

What needs to be worked on?
I need the NeoGAF usernames of Officers in The GAF Empire and NeoGAF if they don't match up with your swtor.com account name!
More FAQs!

What's going to change?
The Community Section will be the first section once the |OT| moves to Community, until then the classes will be first.

Are the classes mirrored?
Yes, each class shares a mirrored class on the opposite faction.
Jedi Knight = Sith Warrior
Jedi Consular = Sith Inquisitor
Trooper = Bounty Hunter
Smuggler = Imperial Agent

Which classes can be healers?
Jedi Sage/Sith Sorceror
Commando/Mercenary
Scoundrel/Operative

Which classes can be tanks?
Jedi Guardian/Sith Juggernaut
Jedi Shadow/Sith Assassin
Vanguard/Powertech

Are there off healers/tanks?
No. While a class might accomplish a role in a bit of a different way, they are ideally all viable at their role.

Where can I go for more information?
Official Site
TORHead - An excellent database website
Darth Hater - A great newsite and has their own database

Where can I see those amazing cinematic videos?
Opening
Hope (The Galactic Republic)
Deceived (The Sith Empire)

My plan is for core info (basic class info, guild info) to be by themselves with more secondary information (class differences, mechanics, planet info, etc) to be in the FAQs, but of course everything can be changed, which is why I'm posting this now. MMOs can be confusing, so I want as much feedback so the |OT| can be as good at conveying information as possible.

Giolon

That's a very good first start. I think in the FAQ you should break down the classes by role, i.e.

OP said:
Which classes can be healers?
Sage/Sorceror
Commando/Mercenary
Scoundrel/Operative

Which one is the best and which are crappy off-healers?
Giolon is going to send an army of murderous Rattataki to kill you.

One thing I would like to see is maybe just available weapons and armor-types for each AC.
So something like:

Jedi Shadow
Wields: One-Handed Lightsaber, Double-bladed Light-Saber, Vibroblade
Wears: Light Armor
Specs: Kinetic Combat (TANK), Infiltration (DPS), Balance (DPS)

My only concern with doing this, is that no Shadow worth their salt is going to use a one-handed lightsaber or a Vibroblade, due if to nothing else than the restriction on many moves that a double-bladed Lightsaber be equipped. While technically true that they can wield them, it is somewhat misleading. It's like in WoW, Warriors can technically wield daggers and staves, but you'd never see one wielding either other than as a joke.

Maybe you could list their primary weapon, and then the alternative weapons in parenthesis or even just leave them out altogether.

I would probably add the What is SWTOR/Setting section from the current OT too.

In addition, have a section for links with links to
Official Site
TOR Head
Darth Hater
SWTOR Wiki Link (there are two out there, eventually one will win out!)
Any other important SWTOR Links (hopefully we get a good theory crafting site)

Link to Game Cinematic would be good with:
Game Intro
Republic Intro
Empire Intro

Good idea!

I made a video last year showcasing the difference between 1 SSD and 2 HHDs RAID 0'd when it came to WoW.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju4LAKqHc00

Depending on how much you want to put in the OT, you can add section for:

Mounts
Companions => Crew Skills
Light Side/Dark Side effects (Gear dependency, Dark Side Corruption Effect)

I'll add a main section for crew skills, and throw companion info in a FAQ. Same for alignment. I've got studying to do, so I'll leave it the way it is for now.

Yeah, just something like that. I mean just more along the lines of, I can see people coming in here and being like "DUDE, which guy do I be if I want to use two lightsabers?!"

I just figured I should be thorough in-case anyone called me out on not knowing what all the weapons they could use were, regardless of their good use or not :p

You are absolutely wrong.. particularly in terms of MMOs. First off, MMOs hardly do any writes at all. The basis of an MMO is a dumb client, were you just read all of the graphic data and display it, any data collected is sent out to the server.. If you have say Logging enabled most of it goes to a buffer and its written once in a while to the log file.

secondly games load gazillion times faster with SSDs, and streaming engines like Unreal engine benifit greatly from this..

Put it this way, I was always under the impression that in Skyrim there was only 1 random image shown when loading a new area, until I watched a friend play it on his machine and it showed like 4 or 5.. He took like 10-15 seconds to load a new area from his HDD, while I take 2-3 seconds at the most from an SSD.
