Star Wars: The Old Republic [Early Access: December 13th] Thread 2

I am contemplating buying this to play with some friends. I played to level 5 the last day of the last beta test and liked what I saw, but I don't know if I want to get into another MMO with my console backlog being huge. :\

I love how this game doesnt even have an Australian release date yet. The first mmo in ages to do this... So either Aussie players will just import, those hyped for it....

And why? Are we going to get local servers? If so, you just lost a large chunk of them to US servers.

Are we going to play on Us servers? If so why put us behind the 8 ball?

Feh.

Pretty much set on wow till guild wars comes out at this rate. Swtor couldnt even fill the gap cause it chose not to!

I was getting about 350ms ping average from adelaide during the beta, I never dropped below 450ms in the years I played wow.
But unfortunately since Friday our internet has gone to shit:

It's because of the old copper wire in our street that Telstra won't replace, been like this for the 11 years since I've been in this house.
It'll go from a bearable 9mbs / 1mbs connection to the crap above. Just bought a new router but all that has achieved is the line no longer drops out when it gets like this, just hangs in there.

:(

So, say I preordered from Amazon and used free super saver shipping, would I be able to play without the real retail copy until it arrives in the mail?

If you get a pre-order code, you should be able to download the game and play it a day or so before launch. EA is allowing at least a few days after launch before users must enter their keys from the retail version.

Is there an easy way to change what drive you have the game installed to without redownloading everything? I don't mind diving into the registry and all that mess if needed.

Did they confirm the grace period again? Last I heard was that they said they weren't doing it at the fansite summit.

You can just copy and paste the whole thing over. Then just change the path on your shortcuts.
So no path assumptions stored anywhere in the registry or in a hidden ini file in your user folder's application data directories or any of that nonsense? Sweet.

I don't know anything specific to SWTOR, but I know I can copy WoW and other games to and from any drives without any major issues.

It's going to really suck if they let me play for 5 days and then freeze my account until I get it for Christmas or it arrives in the mail.

Amazon's estimated delivery for me is the 27th-29th which is unacceptable (launch day shipping wasn't/isn't an option for me in the shipping speed options). I entered my early access code back in like...September I think (I preordered the collector's edition like the 2nd day they started taking preorders...so whenever that was.) so I got my early access code and it's tied to my Bioware account.

I also preordered the collector's edition at Best Buy just in case, but I was wondering if anyone knows if my pre-order code that I entered in (sent to me via Amazon's preorder) is somehow tied to the purchase of the Amazon game? Basically I'm wondering if I can safely cancel my Amazon pre-order and just get my Best Buy copy instead without it somehow "cancelling" my registered early access code on Bioware's site?

It seems like an unlikely possibility given that I can't see Bioware's site having any indication of Amazon purchases, I just would rather be safe than sorry.

You can use any pre-order code for whatever version you end up buying. They aren't tied to the copy that you ordered. So you're fine.

Also the pre-order code won't be terminated from your account. It's locked in and used.

Just did a quick search for Old Republic in the registry, and saw a bunch of entries. I guess I'll just switch the drive letter on all of those as well just in case.

I also noticed my game folder is 37 GB in size. Maybe I should just reinstall the game anyway given it's not the right size?

The Galactic Republic

jbtBOSlDsiCfCu.png

Across the galaxy, the Republic's elite special forces drop into the harshest conflicts ready to do the maximum damage. Outfitted with advanced armor, huge weaponry and the best training possible, Troopers combine leadership with suppression fire, a variety of explosives and incendiary weapons.
Advanced Classes:
j2pulJIBljviu.png
Commando (Healing, DPS) (Assault Cannon, Heavy Armor)
jHhiE7zSd3CDP.png
Vanguard (DPS, Tank) (Blaster Rifle, Heavy Armor)

Leaders and warriors, heroes and champions, the Jedi Knights have stood at the forefront of every battle. They are masters of the lightsaber arts, kicking, jumping and flashing through the air and using the Force to clear the way in front of them.
Advanced Classes:
j2sn0LmZRIwYc.png
Jedi Guardian (Tank, DPS) (Lightsaber, Heavy Armor)
jWP7lI9wO1NLG.png
Jedi Sentinel (DPS) (Dual wields Lightsabers, Medium Armor)

A master of the secrets of the Force, the Jedi Consular is both fighter and healer, teacher and student. The Force can be used to cloud the minds of the weak, restore strength to the fallen and hurl both opponents and objects through the air.
Advanced Classes:
jA3ZzOXTZiR0z.png
Jedi Sage (Healing, DPS) (Lightsaber, Light Armor)
jbf8tiOxMDkTE4.png
Jedi Shadow (Stealth DPS, Tank) (Double Sided Lightsaber, Light Armor)

Living life by their own rules, Smugglers are the galaxy's most unpredictable characters. They dress for ease of movement-with healthy dose of style-carry one or dual blasters and are always ready to shoot first, stealth up and sneak away after.
Advanced Classes:
jEqR8TUEcP86Y.png
Gunslinger (DPS) (Dual wields Blaster Pistols, Medium Armor)
jbsikyzGTU789z.png
Scoundrel (Stealth DPS, Healing) (Blaster Pistol and Scattergun, Medium Armor)

The Sith Empire

j3JxBvj6ODFCe.png

A thorough professional, the Bounty Hunter trains mind and body for every possible job. Blasters, flamethrowers, missiles, energy shields, jetpack and the best armor money can buy-the name of the game is preparation and versatility.
Advanced Classes:
jbqAY2Hs9YhnK5.png
Mercenary (Healing, DPS) (Dual wields Blaster Pistols, Heavy Armor)
jIkisMNaoqq5R.png
Powertech (DPS, Tank) (Blaster Pistol, Heavy Armor)

Behind every Imperial attack, each sabotage, all the great betrayals, was an Imperial Agent. Armed for stealth and assassination, Agents do the jobs nobody else can and as such are trained to use everything from sleeping darts to sniper rifles, stealth belts and knives to advanced probe droids.
Advanced Classes:
jeAm25KfyrfW8.png
Sniper (DPS) (Sniper Rifle and Vibroknife, Medium Armor)
jmFry2G7AO0eJ.png
Operative (Stealth DPS, Healing) (Blaster Rifle and Vibroknife, Medium Armor)

No one inspires more feat than a Sith Warrior. Born for battle, few opponents can withstand the rage-fueled blows from a warrior's lightsaber or penetrate a warrior's armor. If dual wielded lightsabers can't finish the job, there is always Force Choke to bring an opponent to his knees.
Advanced Classes:
jblbDebdoBUvE.png
Sith Juggernaut (Tank, DPS) (Lightsaber, Heavy Armor)
jmO6khRDrPcfC.png
Sith Maruader (DPS) (Dual wields Lightsabers, Medium Armor)

Where a Sith Warrior is rage, an Inquisitor is cunning. A master of Force Lightning and arcane secrets, the Inquisitor can hold one enemy in the air and stun another all the while attacking with lightsaber moves designed for maximum pain.
Advanced Classes:
jp7bp6nc5Jty0.png
Sith Sorcerer (Healing, DPS) (Lightsaber, Light Armor)
jwniR2IOhRQOx.png
Sith Assassin (Stealth DPS, Tank) (Double sided Lightsaber, Light Armor)

Frequently Asked Questions
What's this doing here?
I'm posting this first draft of the |OT| here so I can get feedback from you guys, plus I need FAQs, so ask away!

What needs to be worked on?
I need the NeoGAF usernames of Officers in The GAF Empire and NeoGAF if they don't match up with your swtor.com account name!
More FAQs!

What's going to change?
The Community Section will be the first section once the |OT| moves to Community, until then the classes will be first.

Are the classes mirrored?
Yes, each class shares a mirrored class on the opposite faction.
Jedi Knight = Sith Warrior
Jedi Consular = Sith Inquisitor
Trooper = Bounty Hunter
Smuggler = Imperial Agent

Which classes can be healers?
Jedi Sage/Sith Sorceror
Commando/Mercenary
Scoundrel/Operative

Which classes can be tanks?
Jedi Guardian/Sith Juggernaut
Jedi Shadow/Sith Assassin
Vanguard/Powertech

Are there off healers/tanks?
No. While a class might accomplish a role in a bit of a different way, they are ideally all viable at their role.

Where can I go for more information?
Official Site
TORHead - An excellent database website
Darth Hater - A great newsite and has their own database

Where can I see those amazing cinematic videos?
Opening
Hope (The Galactic Republic)
Deceived (The Sith Empire)

Just reformatted class info, might work on adding more info later.

Ugh, had to change the address on my CE and i lost release date shipping and Amazon can't change it. Says i'll get it on the 22nd.

Ah, so I guess this means I can safely cancel and preorder off Origin? The CE stuff is not THAT important. Meh, I'll just wait to see if there's a grace period and if the item gets shipped before the 20th.

Awesome German Amazon sent an e-mail, that they will be sending SWTOR copies early - already at 15th. :) Hopefully thats the date of the early start for me as well.

Amazon got back to me and changed it to 1 day shipping for free with a delivery estimate of Dec 22. It's not release-date shipping, but I can't open the box until Christmas anyway. I just hope Bioware knows a lot of people will have to wait until Christmas and give us until then at least.

Am I the only one who thinks Marauder/Sent will be the most worthless AC in the game? They really offer nothing over the other classes and ALL they can do is DPS.

I was playing a Jedi Guardian in the beta weekend, however I'm thinking about trying the Jedi Shadow in retail, what are the main differences between both when it comes to tanking?

EDIT: meant Guardian xD

The main difference is Sentinels don't tank. ;). I don't have a helpful answer for you b/c I didn't play enough Shadow - only Sith Warrior Juggernaut and Bounty Hunter Powertech as far as tanking.

They are. Way too low DPS to make up for other shortcomings.

As for the OT, I would make something fancier for the Republic and Sith logos. As it stands now, the two groups are kinda jumbled together.*Just my advice*

I hope Bioware are feeling generous because I just checked my amazon ce order and it says I won't get it till after Christmas, even with paying for the fastest international shipping and ordering the hour preorders went live.

It says estimated shipping date 21 December and estimated delivery date 23 - 29 but then says in another area that it will not arrive till after the 25th.

Why can't they just ship it a few days early, won't get here, Australia, on time even if they do.

First world problems ugh.

Did ya call them or did a chat? I did chat and the amazon rep said how their low in supply, no release day shipping as of now and I won't get my C.E until after December 25, 2011 which is complete bullshiet.

Yea that would be better than the one they're curently using. Gives a better idea of the scale. Also it's awesome art.

I can also increase the size if needed, up to Billy to use it ;)

Updated Logo with designs found on net, resized only. But then removed redundant class images, thinking about adding AC images.

Please continue to give feedback on OT, so we can work with Billy for an amazing OT to start this off!

Edit: Redid Class Imaging, see above. let us know.

Guess i'll open a ticket, what's the point of paying for priority international courier 2-5 days if it is not going to come within that time frame?

Much improved. I would also add a basic story section just for background purposes and newbies.

Can you expand on that? I am planning to play a sith warrior at launch and i was thinking of going marauder up until now. What shortcomings does the class has?

Sure, the DPS doesn't make up for the fact that it's a melee class. This hurts it in PVP not to mention the lack of crowd control for the most part. Also the DPS isn't signficantly higher compared to Guardian/Juggernaught who have heavy armor, which makes a big difference. This is mostly because the accuracy of the off-hand saber is so damn low and something Bioware has refused to fix.

Gonna roll Sith tank :) used to tank in every mmo but stopped in WoW, now I think I'll make my glorious return lol. Hard to find good tanks these days ,everyone wants to be the DPS mega dmg dealer usually.

How do I get in on the Early Launch? I haven't even pre-ordered yet but I've decided to get the game. Can I get in via pre-ordering in a store or is it online only?

No-one has tried a Jedi Shadow in tank spec then? ok, i guess ill have to find out what they're like :p

I heard really good things about the mirror class, but had little dealings with them myself. One of the people I knew was saying something about a talent that makes the light armor as effective/act like heavy armor. The only class I put enough time into to have an a clear opinion on was a healing Sorcerer

<----Officially decided to roll Sage healer as my first so if any knight want nuke the starter quests tag team style for fun and social that would be really cool.

A question I have not sure if it is faq worthy, but here goes anybody know a decent name generator for this universe. In beta I just used the games and waited for something short and sweet.I would really like something a bit nicer and more unique for release, but still shorter for easy whispers.
