Star Wars: The Old Republic [Early Access: December 13th] Thread 2

Just got an email saying testing is closed (I know that) and to uninstall the client ready for release :|

I don't want to download 20gigs again..
That's weird. We were told we could still use the client for launch. I'd keep the client until they say otherwise when they let people download the client for early access.

I would rather have a clean install than one with beta crap being compiled on.

It definitely does introduce instabilities using older builds.

The post concerning the client went up - Click

In preparation for the official release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we wanted to make sure that everyone has the correct game client installed on their machine.

If you participated in our Game Testing Program before November 25th, we recommend that you uninstall the game testing client (refer to instructions below) and then download and install the launch game client. Please note: a link to download the launch game client will be emailed to you soon, and we’ll update this post with more instructions when they’re available. The size of the launch game client is approximately 27 GB.

If you have played in our game testing program at any point from November 25th onwards, you will not need to re-install the game client, as you should already have the launch version installed.

To verify that you have the launch version installed, you can check for the "assets_swtor_main" version file in the following location on your computer: \Program Files (x86)\EA\BioWare\Star Wars – The Old Republic\assets. If you have that file present, you do not need to reinstall the game client.

With that said, some users may notice that their game client folder is much larger than 27 GB on their system. This may be due to having redundant files from previous versions of the client. If you need to clear up space, we recommend completely uninstalling the client and downloading and installing the launch game client. Again, a link to download the game client will be emailed to you soon, and we’ll update this post with more instructions when they’re available.

There's a post on the dev tracker stating if you started playing before November 25th you should uninstall your client.

If you started on November 25th (or after) your client is OK and will be patched to release client.

EDIT: Beaten

I uninstalled anyways. Would prefer not to have any random issues pop up. Plus since CenturyLink was screwing me over on bills I am getting 40MB download speeds now until next June for free.

Either something is wrong with my mother board or the wiring in my house because my ethernet connection keeps going out. Switching back to the USB WiFi dongle...

As is the case with any MMO hoping for wide appeal, I'm hoping this is pretty well optimized for older pc's/laptops. Is that the case here or no chance?

I meant to try it out on my less powerful laptop but didn't have the time, sadly. I'd like to know too because this is the machine I use on the road and it runs WoW just fine (not perfectly, of course).

Yeah, my laptop runs WoW fine enough for me, I mean I know WoW is 7 years old now, but if you want that large audience, you have to realize your game needs to run on everything in some fashion.

"Hi everyone, we just updated the original post. The correct directory has been confirmed and you need 27GB of free space total, but your actual game client file will be smaller."

So the actual client won't be 27GB, at least that's what that's saying. Either way, excitement!

The whole Legacy name thing is making me think hard about what name do I want. Having one name for all the characters is going to be tough.

Also, it'd be a race to the Legacy name, so I'm definitely going to level fast.

About what level is ACT 1 over?

Mine is a variation on one of those old Star Wars Name algorithms. I'm fairly confident I'll be able to get it, but I'm still a bit paranoid.

I was level 27, skipped a lot of side missions, and was on the last planet. I'm thinking level 30.

The current game folder is 19.4GB

Launch client folder will need 27GB...so we are getting something more, a lot more for sure. I am going to go with others and say better textures

I'm just going to use Billychu as my legacy name.
How about "JainasBoobs"?

Act 1 goes into the early-mid 30s, though if you rush I'm sure you could be lower, ending after the
6th
planet.

For those who are curious, Republic Planetary/Act progression:

Tython/Ord Mantell->Coruscant->|End of Prologue (L15-20)|->Taris->Nar Shaddaa->Tatooine->Alderaan->|End of Act 1 (L27-33)|->Balmorra->Quesh->Hoth->|End of Act 2 (L43-45)|->Belsavis->Voss->Corellia->|End of Act 3 (L48-50)|->Ilum

AFAIK, Imperial is basically the same after their Prologue, except Taris and Balmorra are swapped.

More updates:

"I just updated the original thread with the following information:

The actual size of the game client is approximately 19GB (without additional languages installed).

I hope it assuages any worries. Please note that we still recommend having 27 GB of free space."

Just installed an OCZ 120GB SSD in preparation. I think I'll just uninstall the beta client and re-download when I'm able, even though I'm on Stone Age DSL.

Well I just uninstalled the whole thing also, like the e-mail said...this probably means that the people who pre-ordered the retail/box version won't get early access, unless they sell the game early but where I got the code for pre-ordering,they told me no...oh well,we shall see, hopefully you are right.

I think I'm gonna get an SSD, though I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter that much.

In terms of gaming, this is where it would matter most. That said, the biggest thing you'll notice are initial start/load of the game. It's great for the OS though.

They'll make the client available to accounts that have entered a pre-order code with a grace period to enter your CD key, I have absolutely no doubts there.

Loading, yeah, but processing is a different story.

I didn't have much issues with the loading in beta. I guess I'm just used to it.

I completely forgot to try this game on my SSD. The game was constantly dropping in framerate as you loaded new areas...SSD may have helped that. SSDs are often most beneficial to MMOs.

Yep, extra space needed for uncompression/temp files during install.

FUUUUUUUUUU I need to stop watching TOR PVP videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBA4VDSFGDs

Makes me want to play my PT BH so baaaaaaad.

A PvP video that's music doesn't make me want to rage. Amazing.

Once I hit 10 in beta it was instaqueing for wzs and Huttball was a lot of fun.
Passing a ball adds a lot to the gameplay, as simple a concept though it may seem - particularly when you can pass the ball to someone up on the rafters out of the FOV of most the people in the thick of the action.

I want to install on my SSD, but I only bought a 60GB one for OS purposes mostly (64-bit Win7 is like almost half of it), and the game would eat up most of the rest of it.

It's not tied down to installation folder though, so i'll definitely test it out and copy it to my SSD, but i'll be installing on my mechanical, because who knows how large the game will get after (hopefully) content patches come out.

Hmm so do you install applications like MS Office and shit onto an HDD?

Games do not run much faster from SSDs, they do alot of random writes, and ssds are only marginally faster than hdds in that regard. (Something like that anyway, its faster loading screens, but not by much)

Yeah. I have two 750 GB internal drives and a 2 TB external for all my movies and music.

I only have my browser and music composition programs on the SSD right now anyways. The speed is still amazing though, and everything is just much faster on even a basic level. Not to mention that boot times and shutdown times are just plain incredible.
